Pending the resolution of the issues involved, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, Friday, ordered the Federal Government to stop deducting $418 million from the bank accounts of the 36 states of the Federation.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, the presiding Judge, issued the restraining order following an ex-parte motion filed by lawyers representing  the 36 States.

Jibrin Okutepa led the legal team of the States.

The States told Ekwo that withdrawing the money means crippling the 36 States.

The FG had planned to deduct the $418 million from state accounts every month to pay back debts incurred during contracts allegedly executed for the States. But the States were not party to the judgement that gave the Federal Government such powers.

The money was part of the States’ shares of the refund from the Paris Club.

In his ruling, the Judge said the FG should refrain from deducting from the funds until the issues are fully determined.

The Judge adjourned the matter to November 30, 2021.

He then ordered the lawyer to the stated to serve all processes on the defendants before the adjourned date.

Two communication service providers, MTN Nigeria PLC and Airtel Africa PLC are to go into banking operation services.

This followed the Central Bank of Nigeria’s, (CBN) resolve to grant MTN Nigeria PLC and Airtel Africa PLC the licence in principle, to operate a Payment Service Bank in the country.

The development is coming after the service providers said they were waiting for the apex bank to issue them the license.

MTN announced that it received regulatory approval on November 4, 2021 to proceed with its MoMo Payment Service Bank Limited.

“This is the first step in the process towards a final approval, subject to the fulfilment of certain conditions as stipulated by the CBN.”

MTN explained that the service would deepen financial inclusion in the country.

The licence is still subject to the eventual grant of a final PSB license, the Telecom firm said.

Airtel Africa, while disclosing the approval, said its subsidiary SMARTCASH Payment Service Bank Limited has received a PSB approval.

“Subsidiary SMARTCASH Payment Service Bank Limited (“Smartcash”) has been granted approval in principle to operate a payment service bank business in Nigeria.”

Mr Segun Ogunsanya, CEO, Airtel Africa, said, “I am very pleased that Smartcash has been granted an approval in principle to operate a service bank business in Nigeria.

“We will now work closely with the Central Bank to meet all its conditions to receive the operating licence and commence operations.

“The final operating licence will enable us to expand our digital financial products and reach the millions of Nigerians that do not have.”

Obi Cubana Pix Allegedly taken with EFCC Staff

By Adesina Soyooye

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,  has distanced the Commission from a trending photograph of its staff in a photograph with Obinna Iyiegbu, popular  as Obi Cubana. The, photograph was of young men and women, allegedly EFCC staff, crowding him, excitedly.

The photograph which surfaced Friday morning showed Cubana, surrounded by the excited young men and women, eager to associate with him.

The photograph shocked not a few people who wondered what Nigeria has been reduced to if EFCC staff could descend to taking photographs with somebody  the Commission had  arrested, interrogated for four days, and released only on Thursday night. Others hailed Cubana.

If true, the implications are that the EFCC staff were impressed with him, they found him innocent, and he is a role model.

But the EFCC has dismissed the trending photograph as fake. In a release signed by the Commission’s Head, Media &Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC said the photograph was not taken on its premises. More important, it said none of those who appeared in the photograph is its staff, or even remotely known to the Commission.

The Commission dismissed it as a “mischievous stunt by Cubana’s publicists.”

Following is EFCC’s Press Release:

FAKE News: EFCC Disowns Trending Cubana Photograph

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, wishes to disclaim a trending photograph in the social media purported to have been taken by socialite Obi Cubana in the premises of the Commission, crowded by people described as staff of the EFCC.

“The said picture captioned: EFCC Crew poses for quick photograph with billionaire socialite and businessman, Obi Cubana, was not taken in EFCC facility and the people therein are unknown to the Commission.

“The Commission warns the public not to be misled by another mischievous stunt by Cubana’s publicists.”

Obi Cubana, celebrated socialite and businessman was arrested by the EFCC on November 1, 2021. He was interrogated for four days by the Commission on allegations bordering on money laundering and tax fraud, and released on bail Thursday evening

Uzodimma Blames Unemployment, Political Gang-up For Insecurity

Hope Uzodimma

Unemployment and political gang-up have been identified as two key elements fueling insecurity in the country.

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State said both factors which are also linked to poverty can be dealt with if concerted efforts are made at providing employment for the teeming unemployed youth and if the politicians accept defeat in good faith after election.

The Governor, according to his Spokesman, Oguwike Nwachuku, spoke when members of the Course 30 of the National Defence College, Abuja on study tour of Imo State led by Deputy Commandant and Director of Studies, Major-Gen. Emeka Victor Onumajuru paid him a working visit at the Government House, Owerri on Thursday.

Addressing the team at the new Executive Chamber Government House, Owerri, Governor Uzodimma thanked the participants for their choice of Imo for the study as well as for deeming it fit to show solidarity with his government despite insinuations of large scale insecurity in the State.

The Governor assured his guests that Imo State is now peaceful and lauded the role and resilience of the security agencies in dealing with insecurity, especially those who paid the supreme price in the process of securing the state.

Governor Uzodimma explained that the fight against insecurity requires joint and concerted efforts by all the States in the country and the Federal Government, emphasizing that “insecurity in one State or Zone will no doubt snowball into insecurity in other States and Zones.”

Giving a brief history of the creation of Imo State in 1976, the landmarks, population and resource base, the Governor noted that palm oil has remained a major source of livelihood as “it is produced in virtually all communities in Imo State.”

He said the State has the largest oil palm plantation in the country, which is the Adapalm, informing the visitors that the strength of the State lies in her human capital (education), believed to be the largest industry in the Imo.

He said it is in recognition of the value the people attach to education that his administration has, within a short period, established two Universities – University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences Umuagwo and Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University in Ideato South Local Government Area of Imo State.

“The University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences is established to harness the several agricultural potentials of the State into industrial hub that will employ the youths of Imo State and at the same time provide them with skills and technical knowhow in agriculture.”

On the issues that led to insecurity in Imo, the Governor said that “the causes are a combination of activities of bandits and political gang ups masterminded by politicians who ruled the State in the past and refused to accept defeat from 2019 election.”

He regretted that politicians have learnt to take advantage of the vulnerability of unemployed young men and women, most of who are impoverished, to cause diverse problems of which lately, insecurity is one, not just in Imo State but the society at large.

For Imo State in particular, he said the climax of insecurity was the recent infiltration of Owerri Correctional Centre by bandits who forcefully set free over 1,800 inmates that found their way into the street to continue with their nefarious criminal activities.

Governor Uzodimma is however unrelenting in tackling the problem of unemployment and by extension, that of insecurity.

He told his visitors that Government has trained and empowered over 20,000 Imo youths, paid debt of over N1.3 billion to recover Imo Standard Shoes Industries abandoned for many years preparatory to resuscitating the industry as major employment tool.

Also, his Government has recovered the Imo State Ceramic Industry, the Nsu Tiles and has entered into partnership over Adapalm to shore up its activities as a value chain with the hope of generating over 300,000 jobs.

“No doubt these are the only ways the State can engage young men and women in paid employment.”

He assured that when all the businesses, industries and firms are put together, the youths will be assisted to start their own businesses and even employ others while issues of insecurity would be a thing of the past.

Earlier in his speech, Major-Gen. Onumajuru said the visit was part of the Participants’ Study Tour and that the essence is for the participants to “understand the socio-political conditions and environment of the entire country- Nigeria.”

He said to achieve the above the course participants would cover the entire country in six States where each of the six teams will make a presentation of what they observed, experienced and gathered from the different parts of the country.

Major- Gen. Onumajuru told the audience that the team of their tour is: “Countering Insecurity: The Whole of the Society Approach to Enhancing Human Security.”

He expressed gratitude that what the Governor told them will enhance their knowledge and impact on the research they have come to carry out on their tour, particularly as it concerns Imo State.

He said from what they had heard, Governor Uzodimma has committed a lot to secure the state and is still not relenting in ensuring adequate security of lives and property of the people of Imo State.

However, for further improvement on the gains recorded, the participants suggested the need to engage more stakeholders, faith-based organizations, Civil Society Organisations as well as well-spirited individuals to contribute their quota for a peaceful Imo State and Nigeria in general.

Major-Gen. Onumajuru was accompanied on the visit by the Team Leader, Brig-Gen A. B. Mohammad and other Principle Military Officers of the National Defence College.

Also present were the Commandants of the Armed Forces-Army, Navy, Air force – in Imo Sate.

Ondo State Governor, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has declared that the Western Nigeria Security Network Agency codenamed Amotekun Corps, is effectively filling the vacuum created by the overstretched conventional security agencies, particularly the Police in the State.

Governor Akeredolu noted that Amotekun Corps is a product of circumstance which was essentially created to fill the obvious security gap in the state for the security of all.

The Governor added that Amotekun’s efforts with the help of other security agencies have brought relative peace to the State.

He spoke while playing host to the participants of Course 30 of the National Defence College (NDC), Abuja, led by the Commandant, Rear Admiral Oladele Daji.

Governor Akeredolu, who particularly commended the Military for ensuring the peace and security in the country, equally disclosed that his administration has enjoyed necessary support and cooperation from all Heads of Security Agencies in the state including Army, the Police, the NSCDC, the DSS, the NIA and others.

“So, we must make sure we tackle it. You kidnap to the extent that you killed a first class monarch; this is very bad.

“As a Government, we owe it a duty to secure the lives and property of our people.”

The Governor insisted that no genuine herders would graze his herds of cow with AK-47, just as he said any herder who destroys any farmland in the state would be made to pay compensation to the affected farmer.

According to him, Amotekun Corps is now engaged in road patrol to further ensure the security of lives and property of residents in the state.

Governor Akeredolu also said many States in the country have signed Anti-Open Grazing laws to protect the people and their means of livelihood, just as he insisted that the issue of grazing routes would not work in the country because the country could no longer continue to live in the past.

He stressed that the country needed a multi-leveled policing with special attention to state police to effectively secure the lives and property of the citizens.

Earlier, the Commandant, National Defence College, Abuja, Rear Admiral Oladele Daji, who lauded the Governor for his security and industrial strides recorded so far, expressed confidence that the products of the participants’ research would go a long way to assist in policy inputs towards delivery of good governance and ensure security of the the state.

He, particularly, applauded the Governor for the way he handed the issue of farmers/herders clashes in the State to ensure peaceful coexistence between farmers and the Herders.

Kuwait Club Part Ways With Mikel Obi

Four months into the one-year contract of former Super Eagles Captain, John Mikel Obi and Kuwait SC Football Club, both parties have decided to end the agreement mutually.

The Kuwaiti side announced that the 34-year old’s contract has been terminated with immediate effect.

The $4 million mouth-watering deal back in July 2021, saw the former UEFA Champions League winner with Chelsea Football Club of England, leaving England Championship side, Stoke City Football Club, moving to the Middle Eastern country.

The club, via their official media account, made the disclosure on Thursday that it has parted ways with the former Super Eagles captain who joined them about four months ago.

Details regarding the sudden cancellation of his contract by Kuwait SC is still unknown, but it is believed that there might be more to it.

The termination of the contract has dashed Mikel’s hope who had disclosed that he joined the Club to win titles.

On arrival at the Club, in a press conference he said that, “I am happy to be here, in this great club hoping to win trophies together this season.

“For the management and the fans, thank you for your warm welcome, I am ready for the new challenge.”

Kuwait SC narrowly missed out on the league title last season as they finished third behind Al-Qadsia and champions Al-Arabi, and had said that the acquisition of Mikel would boost the Club’s performance.

The Kuwait SC fans had received Mikel with open arms, with the 2013 African Cup of Nations Winner posing with kids after his first training at his new club Kuwait SC back in July.

Mikel was expected to earn a staggering N1.6 billion during his 12-month reign with the Kuwaiti Premier League club, but he has left prematurely.

Lagos: Right Groups, CDHR, NAOSRE Demand Prosecution Of Police Officer Who Killed Tricyclist, Young Boy

The pandemonium that enveloped the Police Area Command  in Oke Odo Local Council Development Area, Lagos State, is gradually easing up as normalcy has returned to the area, but activities in the Command’s Divisional Police Headquarter are skeletal.

However, the Committee For The Defence Of Human Rights, CDHR, has condemned the killings of a  Tricyclist and a young boy by Police Officers assigned to the Police Division.

CDHR has, therefore, demanded for the arrest and prosecution of the yet to be identified Police Officer who allegedly killed the Tricyclist for refusing his demand for N100 and the young boy killed by a stray bullet.

Reacting to the tragedy on Friday, November 5th 2021, CDHR stated that there was no justification for killing the tricycle rider who was on a legitimate business to feed his family.

In the same vein, the National Association of Online Security Reporters, NAOSRE, in a statement signed by Comrade Kehinde Adeoye and Comrade Bello A. Mufutau, the chapter’s Chairman and Secretary respectively, frowned at the carelessness with which security agents, especially the Police snuff out life from unsuspecting and innocent citizens.

It called on the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Hakeem Odumosu, to investigate the incident and bring the Culprits to book.

The statement by CDHR titled ‘Extra Judicial Killing: A Case Of A Young Tricycle Rider Stabbed To Death By A Nigerian Police Officer’ reads in full:

“CDHR condemns the gruesome killing of a young Nigerian who was looking for his daily bread and how to make his life better but was killed by a rogue, scalawag and inhumane Nigerian police officer.

“This unfortunate incident took place today, Thursday, 4th of November, 2021, along Command, Meiran, Lagos State.

The manner in which the poor youngster was unjustly killed is very gruesome and with impunity.

“There cannot be a justification for this gruesome extra judicial murder, we ask, which law provides death penalty for a traffic offence?

“It is very clear that the unworthy Nigerian police officer feels that he is above the law.

This feeling of impunity by the supposed law officers should be put on check and immediately.

“We despise and condemn wholeheartedly this unjustifiable extra judicial killing by the Nigerian police officer of a hardworking and law abiding youth.

“The #EndSARS revolt of 2020 is still fresh in our memories, it was police brutality, injustice and extra judicial killings that fueled it. It seems that nothing was learnt from the protest.

“We hereby demand a thorough private investigation, immediate arrest of the rogue policeman and his prosecution.

While adequate compensation should be paid to the victim, we join the clarion call for a  total overhaul of the Nigerian police.”

Both fatalities were recorded on Thursday in Lagos. The consequence was the destruction of a Police Patrol van. It took the intervention of soldiers to save the Policemen involved, as well as save the offices of the Police division.

Osinbajo Denies Connection To Collapsed Ikoyi Building; Says It’s Wicked; To Sue

0

In a rare show of anger, Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has, in a strongly-worded statement, denied any connections to the collapsed Ikoyi 21-floor storey building.

The Vice President was reacting to publications in the Social Media which said  that he, Osinbajo, bought the parcel of land on which the three towers, including the collapsed one, were built, from business mogul, Chief Michael Ade-Ojo, owner of Elizade Motors, as soon as he became Nigeria’s Vice President

The impression was then created that he has a hand in the ownership of the buildings, and had spoken to the Lagos State Government  of his interest in the Towers which made the Government  to unsealed the property when it was first sealed for some, alleged, infractions.

Ade-Ojo had on Thursday, in a statement, denied ownership of the land at any point in time, and so, said he could not have sold it to the Vice President.

From Monday, November 1 when the building collapsed, efforts had been made to drag Osinbajo’s name into it, including reminding Nigerians that the now late Developer, Femi Osibona’s younger brother, works in the Vice President’s office.

But in a statement signed on his behalf by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, the Vice President said he had nothing to do with the Towers, and never spoke to the Lagos State Government to unseal the building. He said the story was a wicked, inhuman sponsored story with no basis at all, brimming with heartlessness towards the families of the dead.

Said Osinbajo: “The wickedness and viciousness of a lie that seeks to utilise a tragedy where so many people have lost their lives  even as rescue efforts are on-going, and in wanton disregard to the feelings and untold grief of their loved ones for political gain, reveals a dangerous desperation, as well as the heartlessness of the perpetrators of such despicable lies.”

Following is the statement where the Vice President also mourned the dead, and condoled with their families.

IKOYI HIGH-RISE COLLAPSE: OSINBAJO SADDENED, CONDOLES WITH AFFECTED FAMILIES & DEBUNKS DESPICABLE LIES IN SPONSORED ONLINE REPORT

*VP has no interest whatsoever in said property

*All his property, assets already publicly declared

“Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, is saddened by the events that occurred in Lagos on Monday, 1st of November 2021, where a high-rise building under construction on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, collapsed. He condoles with the families and relatives of all those who have died, were injured or affected in the collapse. Prof. Osinbajo considers this painful loss of lives a horrible tragedy.

“Also, the attention of the Vice President has been drawn to an obviously sponsored falsehood regarding the recently collapsed building published by Sahara Reporters on November 4th, 2021, to the effect that:

“1. The VP owns the land upon which the collapsed building in Ikoyi stood.

“2. That the said land was sold to him by Chief Michael Ade. Ojo, Chairman of Elizade Motors; and

“3. That the Vice President, at some point, intervened with the regulatory authorities in Lagos State to unseal the said property.

“Let it be made absolutely clear that Prof. Yemi Osinbajo does not own and has never owned the said land.

“He has also never been involved, in any shape or form, in the development of this or any other land since he became Vice President.

“At no time whatsoever did the VP buy this or any other piece of land from Chief Michael Ade. Ojo, or entered into any transaction for the sale of that land or any other piece of land from Chief Ade. Ojo or anyone for that matter.

“All property and assets owned by the Vice President have been publicly declared.

“Also, the Vice President has never spoken to the Governor of Lagos State or any other official of the State Government regarding the unsealing of the said building on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, which subsequently collapsed. He has, indeed, never acted to influence any other regulatory action on the collapsed building, or any other building for that matter, in Lagos State.

“The Vice President restates categorically that he has no interest whatsoever, and has never had any interest, either legally or beneficially, in the land, the building or development.

“The wickedness and viciousness of a lie that seeks to utilise a tragedy where so many people have lost their lives, even as rescue efforts are ongoing, and in wanton disregard to the feelings and untold grief of their loved ones for political gain, reveals a dangerous desperation, as well as the heartlessness of the perpetrators of such despicable lies.

“Sahara Reporters were undoubtedly well rewarded for their criminal and inhumane conduct. Typical of a hatchet job and deliberately irresponsible journalism, the publication was not signed by anyone.

“The Vice President has referred this disgraceful publication to his lawyers for prompt legal action.”

Anambra: Don’t Elect 21st Century Emperor – Peter Obi; Calls For Free, Fair Peaceful Election

0

The Vice Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2019 election, Mr. Peter Obi, has called for free, fair and peaceful election in Anambra State.

In a release made available to the press on Thursday,  Obi said:  “As we come to the end of electioneering, I call on Anambra people to demonstrate their franchise by coming out en masse  to vote. I also call on everyone directly or indirectly associated with this election to ensure it is free, fair and peaceful.”

Obi who described Anambrarians  as brothers and sisters, reminded them that they did not have to kill and maim because of election saying: “Among our people and many cultures of the world, human life is sacred and must be treated as such.”

Further, Obi thanked IPOB  for calling off the sit-at-home it had earlier declared. He also called on the  Government to release and dialogue with  Nnamdi Kanu and other agitators as expected in a democracy.

On the imperative of electing the best person for the job, Obi said: “We see how a State  that was truly the ‘Light of the Nation’, once referenced as the best in terms of virtually all developmental index, has gone back to  its previous notoriety  as ‘Home for All’ and is once again referenced for all the bad reasons. If we continue on this trajectory, it will sound the final death knell for our dear state.”

Obi, therefore, called on the people of the State to vote for a candidate with character,  competence; a candidate that would be prudent in the management of resources and development oriented by expressing willingness to invest  in critical areas of education, fighting  poverty, improving the health sector, among others.

Obi cautioned against electing a 21st century emperor that would see himself as a king and not a servant.
