Again, IMHA Boils; Three Suspended; One Seat Declared Vacant

Imo State House of Assembly - IMHA

By Charles Igbo

Tension, again, engulfed the Imo State House of Assembly on Thursday, December 23, 2021 during Plenary.

Three members of the Assembly were suspended.

And, one seat declared vacant.

The seat which was declared vacant is that of  Tochi Okere, member representing Ngor Okpala State Constituency.

Okere is said to be notorious for absenteeism at Plenary.

For instance, in 2019, he, allegedly, attended Plenary for only 29 times. In 2020, it was 14 times, only. In 2021, he has, allegedly, not shown up, at all, and has offered no satisfactory reason for his absence.

Declaring Okere’s seat vacant, the Speaker, the Rt. Hon. Kennedy Ibeh said: “He  has been absent for a period more the one-third of the sitting period in a year and that automatically attracts the declaration of the seat vacant and has declared the election (to replace him) to take place in the next 90 days.”

For the suspended members – Arthur Egwim (Ideato North), Ngozi Obiefule (Isu), Obinna Okwara (Nkwerre) –  they were absent  during the hearing and consideration of the 2022 Budget presented by Governor Hope Uzodinma.

“The Governor presented the 2022 Budget. The House  promised to give it an accelerated hearing. These Lawmakers decided to ignore the sitting,” a source told this magazine.

However, unconfirmed sources insist they were suspended for attending the funeral of Ugwumba Uche Nwosu’s mother, Jemimah, who was buried in Nkwerre on Wednesday, December 22, 2021. “Their absence had no effect on the hearings. Their suspension is deeper than the reason given,” this magazine was told.

Imo State House of Assembly is notorious for suspension and counter-suspension. In the past two years, it has paraded three Speakers of the Assembly, and has suspended no fewer than ten members of the 27- member Assembly at one point or the other.

An Unforgettable 2021

Anbassador Mary Beth Leonard

By Mary Beth Leonard (US Ambassador To Nigeria)

As we prepare to transition to 2022, we are grateful for the friendships, strengthened partnerships, and progress accomplished toward U.S. and Nigerian goals this past year.  On behalf of the entire U.S. Mission, I extend our warmest wishes for a healthy, peaceful, and joyous holiday season.

At the outset of 2021, we all had high hopes of controlling the COVID-19 pandemic.  Now, another variant has come to the center stage of global concern.  However, thanks to renewed global health collaboration efforts, vaccine development and distribution is gradually making headway.

At the U.S. Mission, we are fortunate to have dozens of our staff working side by side with our Nigerian counterparts to monitor and respond to the pandemic.  The strength of our support is reflected in the over $130 million we have contributed towards the COVID-19 health response and the hard work of staff who provide expertise, technical assistance, and logistics support. So far, we have pledged 36 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to Nigeria — of which 18 million have been delivered to date, and the balance of 18 million will be shipped in the coming weeks. The pandemic has shown us how interdependent our world is.  No one is safe until everyone is safe.  Through robust global dialogue and ingenuity, we will continue to build global health security in the new year together.

I firmly believe that, together, the world will overcome COVID-19, the same way that we have overcome other global health challenges.  Together, we have brought HIV/AIDS to a point where epidemic control is within our reach.  We achieved the eradication of wild polio virus as all of Africa is now certified as wild polio virus free.  In Nigeria, the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has invested more than $6 billion in the national HIV/AIDS response, where measures of our success include more than 1.6 million men, women, and children currently on HIV treatment.  In partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health, we remain committed to completing the task of placing all people living with HIV on treatment and to strengthening capacity and commitment at all levels.

In fact, we have many reasons to remain positive about the progress made this year toward our shared goals.  This past year, I had many opportunities to engage with Nigerians from all walks of life, from Kebbi to Akwa Ibom, and Ife to Jos.  One common theme inevitably prevails – Nigerians seek a more secure living environment to raise and educate their children, earn a decent living, and strengthen their communities.  We have done our utmost to address these concerns through a variety of mechanisms.

Countering violent extremism in Nigeria remains a top priority for both our countries.  We were proud to support such efforts with the delivery of twelve Super Tucano aircrafts, which are already being employed to assist the Nigerian Air Force in their fight against violent extremist organizations.  We have also worked with civil society, civilian law enforcement, the judiciary, and corrections officials to combat insecurity, strengthen effective and equitable access to the rule of law and justice, protect human rights, and together create a safer Nigeria.

Nigeria is the United States’ second largest trading partner on the continent, and we seek ways to further deepen this vital economic relationship.  During 2021, we strengthened this partnership in important sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, information and communication technology, and renewable energy. On this latter issue, together our nations recognized the impact of climate change.  We welcomed President Buhari’s commitment to strive for zero carbon emissions by 2060 at the COP26 summit, as the United States agreed to slash methane emissions by 30 percent by 2030.  Separately, we welcomed the arrival in Nigeria of well-respected American brands such as United Airlines and Burger King.  United Airlines’ direct flight from Washington, D.C. to Lagos – already booked solid for weeks ahead – is a testimony to our strong economic and people-to-people ties.

Simultaneously, we worked with organizations such as the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded West Africa Trade Hub to co-invest in existing rice and tomato companies to improve yield, resilience, and to create more jobs for Nigerians.  Perhaps the most significant U.S. economic and development commitment in the past year was the launch of a five-year, $2.17 billion Development Objectives Assistance Agreement between Nigeria and the United States.  As USAID celebrated its 60-year anniversary in 2021, we similarly recommit to our shared goal of a healthier, more educated, more prosperous, more stable, and more resilient Nigeria – this new agreement helps us get there.

In 2021, and despite the challenges of COVID-19, we were extremely gratified by the great number of high-level, in-person and virtual meetings between U.S. and Nigerian leaders, which touched on our shared political, military, civil society, and economic goals.  During his visit to Nigeria, Secretary of State Antony Blinken articulated our shared policy goals, and met with civil society and tech innovators who are contributing to a stronger, more inclusive democracy in Nigeria.  Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer, Commander of the United States Africa Command, General Stephen J. Townsend, and others also visited Nigeria and similarly underscored the Biden Administration’s commitment to partnering with Nigeria to solve global challenges and advance shared interests.

As we look forward to the coming year, we are proud to be breaking ground on a new, more accommodating, and modern Consulate in Lagos that reflects the centrality of Nigeria to our foreign policy goals and will better serve the Nigerian public.  Finally, we look forward to continuing our robust, inclusive, and issue-based dialogue at the African Leaders Summit hosted by President Biden.  This ongoing conversation remains so vital to Nigeria’s own democracy strengthening efforts as the 2023 presidential elections approach.

On behalf of the U.S. Mission in Nigeria, I extend our appreciation for the friendships and partnerships which have formed throughout the year.  We wish you a peaceful and prosperous holiday season and new year.

Explosions, Ten Kilometers From Maiduguri Airport As Buhari Touched Down On Maiduguri

Maiduguri Explosion

By Uche Mbah

Reports of explosions caused by rocket launchers, Thursday, wrenched the embattled air of the vicinity of the Maiduguri Airport as Presidential jet, carrying President Muhammadu Buhari, touched down at the Airport.

The explosions reportedly wreaked havoc in the embattled town of Ngomari, two kilometers from the Maiduguri Airport.

Reports indicate that five children lost their lives, many houses destroyed, as terrorists bombarded the town, sending a direct message to the visiting President.

Villagers, hard hit by the attacks, were overheard shouting ” Ba ma so”, meaning they do not want the Presidential visit.

Ngomari is near Maiduguri Airforce base.

Although no group has claimed responsibility, terrorists of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), extraction are heavily suspect.

Officially they were known as Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihād.

The Presidential jet, a Boeing Business jet (Boeing 737-700) marked 5N-FGT took off from the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at exactly 10:48 am Thursday and landed at the Maiduguri airport at 11:18 am, the approximate time of the explosion.

Governor Babagana Zulum had invited the President to commission multiple projects embarked upon and completed by the him.

Borno has been worst hit by terror activities, and is unarguably the epicenter of insurgency, with terrorists occupying swats of land and imposing taxes on occupied territories.

The Minister of information, Lai Muhammed, claims  there is no place occupied and annexed by the criminals. The opposite is, of course, the truth.

Electoral Bill: Inaction Is Not An Option, Says Saraki

0

By Uche Mbah

The immediate past President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, has  said that the National Assembly must act immediately to tackle the disagreement between them and the Presidency over the Electoral bill.

Both legislative Chambers have passed the bill and forwarded same for Presidential assent.

But President Muhammadu Buhari has returned the bill to the National Assembly, objecting to a clause that mandated Direct Primaries for the internal selection of officers and flag bearers by political parties, insisting that it must be left at the discretion of the parties involved.

The Senate, after collecting over seventy signatures in favor of overriding the President, balked at the last minute and decided to sit quietly on the fence.

But Saraki, in a release personally signed by him, said the Senate must act in the shortest possible time.

“We cannot sit back and allow one contentious clause to throw away all the positives in the proposed Electoral Act [amendment] Bill”, he said.

The release read in part:

“Now that Mr. President has conveyed his decision to decline assent to the Electoral Act [amendment] Bill, I am sure that I speak on behalf of millions of Nigerians in urging the National Assembly to act fast.

“This is because we cannot sit back and allow one contentious clause to throw away all the positives in the proposed Electoral Act [amendment] Bill.

“At this point, two options are open to the National Assembly. They either veto the president’s decline of assent or remove the contentious provision on direct primaries and send it back to the president for his assent.

“Whichever option, our legislators choose, can be accomplished in the shortest possible time. We could have a new electoral law in January 2022.

“Anyone that has been following the mood of the nation knows that Nigerians desire to have a new electoral law that will lead to having a credible, free, fair, and peaceful process of electing our leaders.

“They want a system that will ensure that their votes truly count in the election of those who govern them.

“This is why, as the representatives of the Nigerian people, the National Assembly must take a decision in the interest of our nation and its long-term democracy. The option of not doing anything after the refusal of the assent by the President is not an option.

“This proposed electoral law is expected to reassure the youths, many of whom steer clear of the political process because they have no confidence in the system. They believe the system is usually rigged and compromised. One way to bring this active demography into the political system is to enact a new law that will give them hope in our nation. This Electoral Act [Amendment] Bill serves that purpose.

“Our legislators in both chambers of the National Assembly and Mr. President must ensure that it becomes a law without delay”, he concluded.

MURIC Slams Miss Nigeria, As Kano Hisbah Denies Harrassing Parents

Miss Nigeria Beauty Pagent

By Akinwale Kasali

Reactions have greeted the planned invitation of the 2021 Miss Nigeria Beauty Pagent Winner, 18- year old Shatou Garko, and her parents by Kano Hisbah Board for participating in what it termed an unholy, immoral, sinful and illicit event against the Islamic faith.

But Commandant-General of the Hisbah board, Sheikh Harun Ibn Sina, has debunked the news that the Board invited the winner of the 44th edition of Miss Nigeria, Garko for questioning.

This was just as he, also, denied that it has invited  parents of the beauty pageant winner for questioning.

Ibn Sina described the rumoured quizzing of Shatou as the handiwork of mischief-makers.

He noted that the Hisbah authorities in the state did not extend any formal or verbal invitation to Shatou or her parents.

Ibn Sina said, rather, Hisbah only cautioned against the putting of attires that contradict Islamic injunctions noting that clothings that expose sensitive parts of feminine bodies is strictly unacceptable.

It will be recalled that a publication stated that the Kano State Hisbah Board had condemned the emergence of Shatu Garko as the winner of Miss Nigeria 2021, saying it was forbidden for Muslims to participate in any affair that is against Islamic doctrine

Ibn Sina, in the publication, said that participating in the beauty pageant is against the teachings of Islam and the Northern culture.

The publication said the command would soon invite parents to speak on why they allowed her to participate in the contest.

“We investigated and confirmed that the girl called Shatu Garko is from Kano State and an indigene of Garko Local Government area of Kano State where Hisbah is also at work. Islamically, it is totally forbidden because it goes against the teachings and practices of Islam. Immorality is practised and it (beauty pageant) encourages the female gender to be immoral.

“The Holy Qur’an said we should tell our families, especially females to cover their bodies entirely because it’s the best thing for their spiritual, emotional and physical wellbeing. A female Muslim is not allowed to open any part of her body except her face and palms of her hands except for their husbands, children or siblings.

“It has come to our notice that our children are now coming out to contest for this immoral act which is not acceptable,” he said.

The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, in its reaction urged the Kano State Hisbah Board to invite Garko, saying that the Miss Nigeria pageant is like Big Brother Naija, BBNaija.

The Islamic Rights Group stated that Garko’s parents have a case to answer over their daughter’s ‘illegal’ participation in the beauty pageant.

Prof. Ishaq Akintola, MURIC Director, said no decent Muslim lady would participate in any Beauty Pageant like the Miss Nigeria contest, adding that the Beauty Pageant is not different from the television reality show, Big Brother Naija (BBNaija).

The Group said Muslims do not participate in any Beauty Pageant, according to Quran Chapter 24, Verse 31; and Quran Chapter 33, Verse 59.

“These two verses emphatically insist that women should cover themselves and dress up decently and neither should display their body for the public. Being present in a beauty pageant even if she was in a hijab, she had done the catwalked with thousands of men eating her up with their eyes. It is not acceptable,” Akintola stressed.

The Miss Nigeria pageant took place on December 17, at the Landmark Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria, with Garko emerging winner.

Garko, wore a hijab during the pageant, carting home the prize of N10m, one-year residency in a luxury apartment, brand new car, and many brand ambassadorship opportunities.

Akintola, a Professor of Islamic Eschatology at the Lagos State University said:

“We are not quite impressed by the development because the environment itself is un-Islamic – women parading their bodies and all of that. Hers may be different but she is not supposed to mix with those kinds of people. It is like going for BBNaija and using Hijab or dressing like a Muslim but you participated in BBNaija where people make love before the camera and millions of Nigerians are watching.

“In a Beauty Pageant, women also parade their bodies in stages, they come in bikini and all of that. It is not an exercise a Muslim lady should participate in, people who are decent, who have shame, who have honour, who would not display their nudity, who would not expose their bums for millions of naira should not participate in such pageants.”

On the proposed invitation of Garko’s parents by the Kano Sharia police, Akintola said, “It is very good. Why do you think Nigeria is in trouble and our youths uncontrollable? It is because that parental guidance and values are missing at home. How did the parents allow her to go contest? Though she may be 18-year-old, once you are still under your parents, you are under your parents in Islam”.

Royal Rumble As Ooni’s Wife Says Husband Is Two-Faced

Ooni of Ife- Oba Enitan Ogunwusi

By Tosin Olatokunbo

The wife of Ooni of Ife, Sikenuola Naomi has revealed that her husband is not sincere. According to her, the image Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi II projects to the world is not his true colour. The revelation is contained in a statement by the queen, announcing her divorce to the monarch, on Thursday.

Some watchers of the Ooni’s palace said tension is now high in the royal family, barely a day after Oba Ogunwusi revealed that he once contemplated suicide as a young man.

In a statement on Thursday, Sikenuola said her marriage to the traditional ruler has broken down completely, without redemption. She, however, shocked the world after she said in the statement that what Oba Ogunwusi projects to the world is not his true self.

According to the Olori who said she tried all she could to save her marriage, “his Majesty has a picture he would love the world to see and perceive him as and another one which is his true self “.

Speaking on Wednesday at the opening session of the maiden edition of ‘Memorable Moments With Music’ at The Muson Centre, Lagos, Oba Adeyeye said frustration almost pushed him to taking his own life.

He said, “This is a very great moment for me. There is power in music. When I almost committed suicide in my younger age as a real estate business man, it was music that saved my life. Music is a perfect communication with God.

“I had become very successful in the real estate sector at a very young age. I took a loan of N8 billion about 12 years ago to build high rise building which I had to pull down by myself when we were already on the 10th floor, and the money went down the drain.

“Life turned upside down thereafter and the only option was for me to commit suicide, but listening to series of inspirational music reset my thinking faculty to remember the common saying ‘There is Hope When There is Life’.

“I have since then adopted music as a very powerful solution tool when faced with challenges, and I made up mind to invest in music and art for the economic empowerment and mental liberation of our youths and the less privileged people in our society. Ladies and gentlemen, whatever you are going through, please don’t give up. Use inspirational music to elevate your spirit

“This is indeed a calling for me and I feel so happily fulfilled tonight with this 1st day of this musical project, a 3 day musical show which I tagged ‘Memorable Moments With Music’”, Oba Ogunwusi said.

Bayelsa Gov Warns FG On Subsidy Removal

By James Orji

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa state has warned the federal government not to go ahead with the plan to remove subsidy on petrol. He said the Buhari’s administration will throw many Nigerians into poverty if it implements the policy, set to take off by the middle of next year.

The Minister of Finance and Budget, Zainab Ahmed, said last month that the federal government will pay most vulnerable Nigerians N5000  monthly to help them cope after the subsidy regime is ended. The federal government said the over one trillion spent on subsidy annually could be channeled to critical sectors such as education, health and infrastructure to make the lives of many Nigerians better.

The Bayelsa’s helmsman took a different position from the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, NGF which has backed subsidy removal.

The forum, said last week, that the removal of petrol subsidy will free up more resources for state governments. The forum’s chairman, Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti state, said one of the areas the governors are looking at, is to use whatever is saved from subsidy to pay the arrears of pensioners in the country.

But speaking on the issue, Diri at the end-of-year meeting of the Bayelsa Elders Council in Yenagoa, said ending the subsidy regime will further impoverish many Nigerians and thrown them into untold hardship, adding that the subsidy issue shold be addressed on state-bystate basis.

The federal government “should rather re-calibrate the subsidy deductions based on volume of petroleum products consumed by each state,” Diri said.

In a communique released after NGF meeting, last week, Fayemi said the governors have resolved to include settlement of all outstanding pension obligations as part of the social compact with citizens for the removal of fuel subsidy.

The governors affirmed their support for the federal government’s transport palliative scheme.

Fayemi said, “on the strategy to build a sustainable Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) for State Governments that will also be capable of clearing outstanding pension liabilities, members listened to a presentation by the Chief Executive of AVA Capital, Mr Kayode Falasinnu, and resolved that the settlement of all outstanding pension obligations should be included as part of the social compact with citizens for the removal of fuel subsidies.

“With respect to the required legal and institutional changes required to facilitate a successful CPS transition in all States, State Commissioners of Finance will be mandated to ensure that States meet the guidelines for the implementation of Contributory Pension Schemes by State Governments, including the enactment of a pension law, the establishment of a pension board and the adoption of a transition framework for each State,” he said.

Breaking: Ooni of Ife Second Marriage Breaks Down

Ooni of ife

By James Orji

After months of speculations over the troubled marriage of Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeey Ogunwusi and his wife, Olori Sikenuola Naomi, the relationship has finally broken down.

Fours years ago, Ooni’s first wife, Olori Wuraola, left him citing irreconcilable difference with the custodian of Yoruba heritage, as the traditional ruler is well known.

Sikekenola has also abandoned her marriage with one of the foremost traditional rulers in Africa. We are no longer husband and wife, the queen who got married to Oba Ogunwusi three years ago said in a statement, thus ending the once romantic relationship.

According to the statement seen by the magazine Sikenuola said she will no longer “be referred to as wife to the Ooni of Ife or as Queen of Ile-Ife ”

The statement reads in part “I bless the Lord almighty for His faithfulness in the last 3years of my marriage. In life’s journey, it isn’t how far. Still, how well, indeed though satan should buffet if trials should come, I have this blessed assurance controlling all situations and saying to me it is well with my soul. Certainly, it is well. I made my journey into the ancient throne of Ife with faith in my heart and love for the keeper of it.

“Few impressions I would love to correct. If anyone knows otherwise, they are free to come up with facts. Let it be known that this decision to move on did not come because his majesty is married to another queen. As many would love to assume, throughout our life as a couple, I was the only married wife to him. There were side attractions, but it was never an issue.

She explained her journey to becoming Ooni’s wife and where the trouble in the marriage started.

“I never approached him with any revelation of any sort, as many believed he contacted me first and made his proposal known several months later. The marriage was not an arranged one, as many have misconstrued. I never knew the prophetess said to have introduced me to him. Instead, he introduced her to me after I agreed to marry him. I was only being polite out of respect for him.

“I have never been pregnant all my life before Tadenikawo; my son is my first ever pregnancy with medical reports to back it up. The girl who is said to be my daughter is my niece

“I did my best to endure and make it work; many times, I smiled through the struggle, but I have finally realised I had just one assignment, my son, and when God is done, He is done. He chose Saul to be king, and when He was done, He told the prophet Samuel I have moved on.

“Religion was never an issue between us; please refer to my interview on News Central TV. Instead, His Majesty has a picture he would love the world to see and perceive him as and another one which is his true self.”

I will no longer be addressed as the wife of Ooni of Ife, she said

Sikenuola “today I announce the beginning of a new dawn and the close of a chapter. Today, I am a mother to God’s unique gift. I am no longer a slave to my thoughts of perfection.

“I, at this moment, announce that I shall no longer be referred to as wife to the Ooni of Ife or as Queen of Ile-Ife but as the Queen of the people and mother of my adorable Prince.to be cont”.

Imo: Ihedioha, Uche Nwosu, Ignite Political Realignment Talks At Funeral

0
Emeka Ihedioha and Uche Nwosu

By Charles Igbo

Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Emeka Ihedioha, was a surprise face at the funeral of Mrs Jemimah Nwosu, mother of his arch Political rival and “enemy”, Uche Nwosu.

Ihedioha, declared winner of the 2019 Governorship Election by the Independent National Electoral  Commission, INEC, was the Governor of Imo State before the Supreme Court removed him in favour of the incumbent Senator Hope Uzodinma. Ihedioha’s administration lasted for seven months, only.

Nwosu, a son-in-law to former Governor Rochas Okorocha, in that election, was the Governorship candidate of the Action Alliance, AA, after Uzodinma picked the ticket of the All Progressives Congress, APC, displacing him.

Nwosu and his father-in-law, Okorocha, had been political  enemies of Ihedioha for years. On being sworn-in as the Governor of the State, Ihedioha set up a number of Judicial Commissions and Panels to probe the activities of Okorocha in his eight year administration.

It is the implementation of the White Paper on the findings of the probe Panels, which Uzodinma refused to disband, that have stripped Okorocha of everything he reportedly illegally acquired in the State. The Okorocha group holds Ihedioha responsible for their principal’s sad fate.

Okorocha and Uzodinma, though in the same party, have a very sour relationship, just as he has with Ihedioha, or so everybody thought.

But in a classic case of “my enemy’s enemy is my friend”, Okorocha and Ihedioha have allegedly been hobnobbing.

Speculations have been strong that both men and Senator Ifeanyi Ararume, another APC  chieftain, unhappy that Uzodinma did not support him in his recent Senatorial ambition, have been meeting. They are said to be forming an alliance to confront Uzodinma in 2023. There have, also, been speculations that the Okorocha group, in particular, is poised to defect to the PDP, especially, as he, and his supporters, did not take part in the APC revalidation exercise. Okorocha and his group are completely out of the main stream APC in Imo State. In recent times too, Okorocha has been publicly hobnobbing with Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, unarguably, one of the most influential voices in the PDP.

However, according to political watchers, nothing has given teeth to a possible  political realignment in the State than the presence of Ihedioha at the funeral of Uche Nwosu’s mother. If that happens, it is a realignment nobody can comfortably ignore.

On arrival at the funeral in Nkwerre on Wednesday, December 22,  for the funeral, Ihedioha and Nwosu hugged, held hands forever, and was received with excitement by the crowd present. Present too, of course, was Okorocha, whose daughter, Uloma, is married to Nwosu.

There are speculations that  in 2023, Ihedioha and Nwosu could run on the same ticket under the PDP.

While that is still in the realms of speculations, the task before Ihedioha is to get the PDP Governorship ticket in 2023.
