Jose Peseiro Is New Super Eagles Coach; To Replace Eguavoen After AFCON 2022

Less than three weeks after the sack of former Super Eagles Franco-German Coach, Gernot Rohr, the Melvin Amaju Pinnick led Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, had announced the appointment of Portuguese, Jose Peseiro as the New Coach for the Super Eagles.

Though Augustine Eguavoen has been saddled with the responsibility of guiding the Super Eagles to the African Cup of Nations Championship in Cameroon he is expected to pass the baton to Peseiro thereafter.

Peseiro is saddled with the responsibility of qualifying the Super Eagles to the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, with the final qualification series for Africa taking pace in March 2022.

The appointment of Peseiro was confirmed by the NFF Wednesday after hours of closed-door meeting.

In a Statement by the Nation’s Footballing body, it said; “After careful consideration of a memo presented by Chairman of the Technical and Development Sub-Committee, the Executive Committee endorsed a proposal for the appointment of Mr Jose Peseiro as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, following the end to the relationship with Mr Gernot Rohr.”

“However, the Committee resolved that Mr Augustine Eguavoen, named the interim Head Coach, will lead the Super Eagles to the AFCON 2021 in Cameroon with Mr Peseiro only playing the role of observer.

“It was unanimously agreed that the AFCON is a good avenue for Mr Peseiro to launch a working relationship with Mr Eguavoen, who will revert to his role as Technical Director (hence Mr Peseiro’s immediate boss) after the AFCON.”

The Executive Committee also mandated the Technical and Development Committee as well as the NFF Secretariat to organise a friendly match for the Super Eagles when the team arrives in Garoua for the AFCON 2021, and also to arrange matches for the Super Eagles and the Super Falcons in the upcoming FIFA windows for international friendlies.

Pinnick had earlier said, after the termination of Rohr’s contract, that the NFF was working tirelessly to appoint a new Coach for the Super Eagles as the World Cup Qualification Series reaches its crucial stage.

Born José Vítor dos Santos Peseiro to a Portuguese family in Coruche, Santarém District, he was a former footballer, but Peseiro never played in higher than the Segunda Liga as a professional, starting out at Sport Lisboa e Cartaxo in 1979.

In that competition, he represented Amora FC, Clube Oriental de Lisboa, GD Samora Correia and S.C.U. Torreense, for a total of five seasons.

He, however, retired at the age of 34-years at the end of the 1993–94 season in the fourth division, with local club União de Santarém.

Peseiro spent his first eight years as a manager in the third and fourth tiers of Portuguese football, starting out as a player-coach at his last team.

In summer 1999 he was appointed at C.D. Nacional, which he helped promote to the Primeira Liga in just three seasons.  In 2002–03, he led the team to a final 11th position.

In 2003–04, Peseiro assisted Carlos Queiroz at Real Madrid. At the end of the campaign, after the team lost a considerable advantage on the table to be finally surpassed by Valencia CF, FC Barcelona and Deportivo de La Coruña, the pair was sacked, and the latter returned to his assistant position in Manchester United.

Peseiro signed with Sporting CP for 2004–05. After collecting three losses and two draws in his first nine games in charge, the side eventually finished in third place with 61 points, four behind champions S.L. Benfica; additionally, he coached the team to a runner-up run in the UEFA Cup after disposing of the likes of Feyenoord, Middlesbrough and Newcastle United. The final was played at the Estádio José Alvalade, and after a 1–0 lead at half-time the hosts eventually succumbed to PFC CSKA Moscow 3–1.

At the start of the 2005–06 season, the Lions were ousted from the UEFA Champions League by Udinese Calcio, and after being relegated to the UEFA Cup they were immediately knocked out by Halmstads BK 4–4 on aggregate after a 2–3 home loss. On 16 October 2005, following a 0–1 home defeat to Académica de Coimbra that saw Sporting sink to the seventh position, he resigned.

Eastern Europe, Saudi Arabia

In the 2007 off-season, Peseiro was named manager of Panathinaikos FC. After failing to win the Super League Greece and also losing 0–4 to neighbouring Olympiacos F.C. in the domestic cup, he was forced to step down.

In June 2008, Peseiro signed a three-year contract with Romanian club FC Rapid București. On 2 October, after being eliminated from the UEFA Cup by VfL Wolfsburg, he was sacked only to be reinstated a few days later; he eventually resigned on 12 January 2009, after failing to agree on a new deal.[15]

Peseiro succeeded Nasser Al-Johar at the helm of the Saudi Arabian national team in 2009, during the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. His first game occurred on 28 March, and it ended with a 2–1 away win over Iran which was the former’s first ever victory in that country and the latter’s first loss in nearly 40 home games; eventually, the nation failed to reach the finals in South Africa, and on 10 January 2011 he was relieved of his duties after losing the first game in the AFC Asian Cup against Syria.

On 3 June 2012, Peseiro was appointed at S.C. Braga. His first major signing was Portuguese international Rúben Micael, and he qualified the club to the group stage of the Champions League for the second time in its history, after ousting Udinese on penalties.

At the end of the campaign, in spite of winning the Taça da Liga and ranking fourth in the league, Braga and Peseiro reached an agreement to terminate the manager’s contract.

From 11 November 2013 to 11 January 2015, Peseiro worked with Al Wahda FC in the UAE Pro League. On 9 October of the latter year, Al Ahly SC announced his signing; upon hearing the news, fans of the latter protested against the decision based on his weak résumé.

On 18 January 2016, after cutting ties with the Egyptian side, Peseiro replaced Julen Lopetegui at FC Porto.

Even though the third position the team occupied at the time of the Spaniard’s dismissal was still secured, he collected more losses than his predecessor, and also lost the final of the Taça de Portugal to former team Braga, on penalties.

On 6 June 2016, Peseiro signed a two-year deal with precisely Braga. On 14 December, following consecutive home defeats that resulted in elimination from the Europa League and the Portuguese Cup, respectively at the hands of FC Shakhtar Donetsk (2–4) and S.C. Covilhã (1–2), he was fired.

Peseiro returned to the UAE in January 2017 with Sharjah FC, and was sacked nine months later after a poor start to the new season. The following February, he went home to sign a contract at Vitória S.C. until June 2019, which he rescinded by mutual agreement a year early.

In July 2018, Peseiro returned to Sporting after 13 years away, assuming the reins at a club that had lost several key players following fan violence and whose previous manager Siniša Mihajlović lasted nine days in the job. On 1 November, following poor overall performances and a 1–2 home loss against G.D. Estoril Praia for the group stage of the Taça da Liga, he was relieved of his duties.

Peseiro returned to national team duties on 4 February 2020, being appointed by Venezuela after the resignation of Rafael Dudamel. He made his debut on 9 October in a 3–0 loss away to Colombia in 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification; the opponents were led by compatriot Carlos Queiroz.

At the 2021 Copa América in Brazil, Venezuela were eliminated from the group stage with two draws and two defeats; Peseiro was praised by pundit Tim Vickery for achieving those results despite a spate of COVID-19 infections and virus-related travel restrictions that kept key forward Salomón Rondón in China. He resigned in August, having not been paid for over a year amidst the South American country’s economic crisis.

Late Wednesday evening, the Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa led Lagos State House of Assembly passed the Year 2022 budget estimate with a slight increase of the grand total from the initial N1.38 trillion to N1.758 trillion.

The budget was passed at a sitting presided over by the Speaker of the House, after a presentation of the report by Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, Chairman of the Committee on Economic Planning and Budget.

Yishawu,  after the plenary, explained that the total budget size passed has addition of left overs from the previous allocations in the 2021 budget.

He said the leftover was rolled into ‘contingency fund’ in the Y2022 budget.

He also put the Capital and Recurrent Expenditure ratio at 66:34.

While the recurrent expenditure is N591,280,803,486bn, the Capital expenditure is N1.166,915,843,358trn, which brings the budget total size to N1,758,196,44,844trn.

According to him the loans, bonds and ISPO funds are captured in the budget that was passed.

Speaking after the passage of the budget, Obasa thanked his colleagues for working assiduously to ensure that the appropriation bill was passed.

While wishing them a happy New Year celebration, Obasa prayed that God would continue to keep Lagos safe.

He urged them to also remain conscious of their safety as well as the safety of their neighbours.

Outgoing Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, who was recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG,  and due to retire in January 2022, was honoured on Wednesday by the Lagos State House of Assembly for his proactiveness, impact and effective management of the security of the State.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa showered encomium on Odumosu, urging officials of the Police Force to emulate him. He, however, used the occasion to caution the police in the state against harassment, intimidation and extortion of residents if they wanted to be respected.

Obasa said Odumosu was honoured as the first Commissioner of Police in the state to stand before the lawmakers in the hallowed chamber and address Lagosians on his experience and issues with policing Lagos because he is considered to have effectively managed the security of the state.

Thanking the State Police Commissioner, the Speaker appreciated him for his openness and responsiveness each time there were issues affecting the peace of the state.

“It is important to call on those behind you to know that the relationship between the police and the people need to be constantly improved upon,” Obasa said adding that men of the Nigeria Police Force needed to build more trust among the people and make the latter know they are truly being served.

“Everybody must be treated with respect, dignity and honour and that is how we can earn our respect. Policing should not be about harassment and extortion but building trust among the people and making them comfortable,” Obasa advised.

The Commissioner of Police, who led a team of officers to the House, thanked the Lawmakers for their support.

According to him, nothing could have been achieved in terms of security and peace in the State without the assistance of the House led by Speaker Obasa.

He said he would remain grateful to Lagos and Lagosians for making it possible for him and his team to effectively manage the security of the state and making it the most peaceful in the country.

Odumosu, who described Lagos as a mini-Nigeria, noted that the proactiveness of the Lagos Assembly resulted in the laws that have helped the police remain successful in the state.

He said the Cultism Prohibition Law, has helped to reduce illegal associations in tertiary institutions in the state and also helped with adequate enlightenment of property owners and residents.

He listed other laws that have helped the police to include the Land Use Charge amendment law which has reduced the activities of land grabbers, the Anti-Open Grazing law, the Neighborhood Safety Corps law, which has ensured synergy among security agencies, the Coronavirus Pandemic Law, which enforcement helped reduce the spread of COVID-19, the Transport Sector Amendment law, which has helped with traffic management and the law stopping parade of suspects to protect their fundamental rights.

“We promise to continue to excel in providing water-tight security for the people of the state,” he told the lawmakers.

He also promised that he would encourage his successor to sustain the relationship between the police and the House while urging the lawmakers to extend their support to whoever will take over from him.

“Policing Lagos is not a tea party. Without the laws in Lagos, it would have been difficult to police the state. Don’t get tired, don’t relent in making the laws that would make Lagos state maintain its place as the most peaceful state in Nigeria,” he urged.

In their contributions, the lawmakers commended Odumosu for his success adding that his experience would always be needed in the State even after his retirement.

2023: Produce Only Yoruba Candidates Or Face Uprising Pan Yoruba Groups Tell Parties

Yoruba States

By Akinwale Kasali

As the 2023 Presidential Election draws closer, politicking has commenced, several Pan Yoruba Groups have vowed to ensure that the 2023 Polls produces a candidate that will restructure the country and resolve the lingering National Question.

The Groups stated emphatically that the forthcoming Presidential election must produce a Yoruba Presidential candidate or risk popular uprising.

They added that political parties should know that the coming election will be different from previous ones, as it will go beyond political affiliations of the All Progressives Congress, APC or the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, but about the people on the streets.

They stressed that the Pan Yoruba groups will take over the process and the campaign to ensure the will of the people triumph in the entire Yoruba territories.

The groups warned that multiplicity of Presidential candidates in Yorubaland will be counter productive.

The coalition said it is aware of Presidential aspirants like Dr Kayode Fayemi, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, and Bola Ahmed Tinubu,  adding that the Yoruba people must make the choice of who should represent the interest of the Yoruba people at the National level and not for the candidates to impose themselves as representing the Yoruba slot.

“We shall ensure this does not happen. The Yoruba people must decide their Presidential candidate and work genuinely for him” the groups said.

“We wish to see the National Question resolved immediately before the next election, but given the balance of strength, the Presidential election may still hold without the country addressing the critical issue of self-determination. If this happens, Yorubaland will rise up to mobilise for any candidate that genuinely wants to restructure Nigeria in the first six months of the post Mohammed Buhari era”.

The Group made this known in a communiqué signed by Sunday Akinnuoye, Femi Agbana and Ganiat Toriola.

The groups said consultation is on-going with ethnic nationalities across Nigeria to ensure they speak with one voice during the forthcoming election. The groups said the Yoruba have been taken for granted by the political elite who think the people do not matter.

They furthermore stressed that Presidential aspirants in Yorubaland usually rely on money not ideas adding that political leaders have emerged with absolute contempt for the people making it difficult for them to address the fears and aspirations of the people.

“We are meeting with other nationalities across Nigeria and the human rights community. We do not want the next election to be determined by the oppressors, but by the oppressed, not by the slave owners but by the enslaved with a new defiant spirit of resistance against unjust system’ the group stated.

The coalition said elections have been held by giving cash to voters which legitimized the right of the elected to look down on the voters and even turn against them.

“We have studied what happened in Latin America and in Europe lately. The people rose up and voted according to their conscience. They voted for their true representative. This seldom happen in Nigeria but in 2023, there will be a radical change. The people will speak and the world will hear them loud and clear. If a popular election is annulled or the candidate delisted, the resistance will be more than June 12.

“We have resolved to ensure only one credible Yoruba candidate emerges, a decent person that we can hold to his or her words, a responsible family man who fears God and respects the people, a candidate that is of high moral standing who is genuinely committed to resolving the knotty National Question,” the groups said.

“We want to assure Nigerians that the people can change the narrative of the 2023 election. This is possible. We can reignite the flame of liberty using the mass-based approach beyond political party divide”, the group in the communique signed by 57 groups said. The groups drew representation from the O’odua Peoples Congress, (OPC), Oodua Nationalist Coalition, (ONAC), Agbekoya, South West Students Coalition, (SWSC), Oodua Muslim-Christian Youth Dialogue, (OMCYD), Oodua Liberation Movement, (OLM), Oodua Self Determination Alliance, (OSDA), Itsekiri Salvation Front, (ISF), Network of South West Vigilante, (NSWV), Oodua Hunters Union, (OHUN), Yoruba Automobile Technicians Association, (YATA-South West), South West Tailors Union, (SWTU), South West Professionals, (SOWPROF),Convenant Group among many others.

OPINION: Of Uche Nwosu’s Arrest And Wailing Choristers

0
Uche Nwosu and His Wife

By Oguwike Nwachuku

The arrest, Sunday, December 26, of the former Governorship candidate of the Action Alliance (AA), Mr. Uche Nwosu, a son in-law, to former Governor Rochas Okorocha, by security operatives has thrown up familiar issues in Imo State polity – lies, propaganda, abuses, insults and blackmail.

When the news broke that Nwosu, one time Chief of Staff to Okorocha had been picked up by the Police working on a critical case of alleged sponsorship of bandits and generally, insecurity in Imo, the sentiment of where he was picked up – the Church premises and the manner of his arrest – became the issue.

Pronto, the social media platforms were awash with the incident that happened at the Church premises and relying on their own imagination, dished out wrong reportage that those who came for Nwosu were kidnappers hence he was abducted.

Only few credible traditional and online newspapers had the discipline to tarry a while to know whether Nwosu had actually been kidnapped or abducted in the Church.

And it really turned out to be that Nwosu was arrested by the Police at the St. Peter’s Anglican Church Eziama Obaire in Nkwerre local government area of Imo State and neither abducted nor kidnapped.

The Police who arrested him said they had long invited Nwosu to their office to answer questions on allegations of sponsoring of kidnappers and bandits and generally, insecurity in Imo State.

The Police dismissed the abduction/ kidnap saga in a statement by the Imo State Police Command signed by the spokesman, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Michael Abatam.

“This is to inform the general public that Chief Uche Nwosu was not kidnapped but was arrested by the police and Imo State Police Command is aware of the arrest and presently he is in Police custody.

“This is to refute the earlier news that has been making rounds on social media that he was kidnapped by unknown persons /gunmen.

“The Commissioner of Police while using this medium to assure Imolites of the command’s commitment in ensuring the safety of life and prosperity this yuletide season, advised the general public to always shun fake news.”

Having lost the initial propaganda to make Nwosu’s arrest look like abduction or kidnap after police came out to clear the air, the wailing choristers resorted to pursuing the second leg of the propaganda and blackmail over the incident which was the venue of his arrest – the Church.

Before you could say Jack, the venue of Nwosu’s arrest started gathering potency, so much so that by the close of business on Monday, December 27, every Tom, Dick and Harry had “the desecration of the Church” with the arrest on their lips. Shortly, I would like to ask how?

The Church in Imo State has, over the years, become a potent tool for politicking. Both the clergy, the laity and the congregants have wittingly or unwittingly got sunk into the melodrama that the Church provides for politicians to undermine each other. In most cases, that is done along the line of Catholic/Anglican/ Pentecostal divides.

Rather than a Sanctuary of God that the Church ought to be, many now see the place as a Sanctuary of sorts – politics, criminality, blackmail, propaganda, slander, cult activities among others. The promise of God’s grace becomes everybody’s defence. Unfortunately, we forget too soon the biblical injunction in Romans 6:1 which says, “Shall we then continue in sin that grace may abound?” for which Paul said, “God forbid (Romans 6:2).”

As a Christian of Anglican extraction, I look forward to Churches where criminals will go to and sincerely repent of their criminality and sins, surrendering whole heartedly to God and requesting prayers from the Reverend Father in charge of the Church.

If we hear that there are Churches where bandits, kidnappers, murderers and others quietly go to repent and atone for their crimes and misdeeds against fellow human beings, that Church will automatically turn to a place for Pilgrimage. Or have we forgotten that we are told that there is joy in heaven when one sinner repents?

I do not think a Church, a dwelling place for God, holy, reserved and pious arena deserves to be Santuary for those who want to mock God by glaringly coming to the place to challenge God’s Omnipotence, perhaps due to their network of social standing, affluence, cult links, criminal tendencies et al.

The unfortunate incident that took place in the premises of St. Peter’s Anglican Church Eziama Obaire in Nkwerre where Nwosu was arrested should rather challenge our intuition, both as Church leaders, laity and congregants of different faiths and as Christians. It provides us with the opportunity for soul searching and re-examination of ourselves and our relationship with God.

I used the word “unfortunate” advisedly because no good Christian would love to be associated with a humiliation in the Sanctuary of God. In other words, a good Christian would always want to do things in and out of the Church that would bring glory to God’s name and respect for His Sanctuary.

Any Christian who takes to criminality and more so, murderous acts, directly or indirectly taking lives he or she did not create, has automatically defamed the name of God and mocks His place of Worship. Such a person also loses the morals to say he or she is in the place of God for worship.  Can we sincerely absolve ourselves from the aforesaid even as we shout desecration of the House of God on top of our voices?

It would be infra-dig not to appreciate the position some top ranking leaders of Churches have taken, similar to that of the Government, on the incident that took place at the afore mentioned Church.

I want to believe that what Most Rev (Dr.) David Onuoha, the Anglican Archbishop of Ecclesiastical Province of Owerri, the Most Rev Augustine Ukwuoma, the Catholic Bishop of Orlu Diocese, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Imo State, Dr. Eches Divine Eches, among others, have said must have pricked our consciences enough and provided the security agencies the needed panacea to deal with similar cases in future.

I want to thank them most sincerely for the position they have taken. I must also thank the Government for blaming the security agencies where necessary. It shows that the Government of Senator Hope Uzodimma does not play to the gallery. I am optimistic that the Security Agencies involved in criminal justice matters will, going forward, be properly guided.

However, truth is that abnormal cases happen and in most cases circumstances propel such happenstance. The question is – are there things expected of us to do that can minimise, or even stop those abnormal things from taking place?

Like Archbishop Onuoha pointed out, it has taken 160 years for what happened at the Church to occur. Does that not speak to the type of Christians we are called today?

God, we all know, is a God of justice. Our faith as Christians tells us that nothing happens without God’s approval. Let me explain.

When Christians gathered in Owerri about two weeks ago, bound, cast and cried to God to expose those behind the spate of insecurity in Imo State I cannot remember if they did tell God the particular place the arrest of such persons or their sponsors should take place. They did not also know who the suspects could be. I can also remember that the Christians told God not to spare anyone, no matter how highly placed.

It was shortly after the prayer session that what looks like another major breakthrough, arrest and interrogation of some key suspects, happened.

Before now we did not know about one Chibuzo Uchenna or is he called Emperor who linked Uche Nwosu and others to the sponsorship and funding of insecurity in Imo State. When, therefore, we say God works in mysterious ways, is it just for the sake of saying it?

The so-called Chibuzo Uchenna reportedly told the police that Uche Nwosu, one Kingsley Uju and Rochas Okorocha have been romancing with former ex-militants – Gen. Banga and Gen. Felix and that in most cases, Nwosu is the contact person to send money across to them.

The curious Police claimed they had extended invitations to Nwosu several times on the costly allegation but that he  allegedly rebuffed them. If his Christianity is without blemish and he is convinced he has no skeleton in his cupboard would that not have moved him to save himself and the Sanctuary of God from embarrassment?

Come to think of it, where in the Holy Book is it said that anyone who commits crime or who faces allegation of crime and is found in the Church should not be arrested there?  If Jesus Christ could rebuke ordinary money changers in his father’s house, upturning their tables for turning God’s House into a place of commerce, would he have preferred to approve that alleged murderers, criminals and those committing heinous crimes against humanity be sparred in his father’s house? Why are we also destroying the sanctity of the Church with sentiments?

For months now, notorious kidnappers, bandits, muggers in human form, cannibals and daylight murderers have made our once peaceful state a no-go area for everyone.

As Governor Uzodimma cries out every day that the insecurity in Imo is politically-motivated only a few people from the State take his cry to heart while a large chunk, including some of those who call themselves Christians look the other way.

Reporters who went to Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State recently have not stopped recounting their tale of woes – mindless killings and cannibalism – going on in a once vibrant environment where the people are noted for their commendable economic activities.

But for the courage Governor Uzodimma has, the sentiment is for the likes of Senator Okorocha and his ilk to ensure that Imo State is left desolate even during a festive period like Christmas.

The noise Okorocha and his league of wailing choristers are making is because contrary to their expectation, Imo people were able to return home for Christmas as they were assured of their safety by Governor Uzodimma.

For how long shall we continue to allow Okorocha and his few cronies ride rough shod on a State that is nearly  five million in population? If only Imo people will know how far Okorocha perfected the act of holding them perpetually bound, they will rise in unison to shout him down any time he raises his voice as they have seen him of late.

Rather than focus on manner and place of arrest of Nwosu, I thought we should  first of all thank God for a prayer answered and plead with Him to lead us to where the rest the police said are hiding, so that they also can be fished out.

We should pray fervently to God for thorough investigation and for the course of justice not to be perverted instead of listening to the wailing choristers who are hired to inundate the social media platforms and faithless Churches with sentiments.

Ondo: Akeredolu Soffocates Retirees With Non Payment Of Entitlements

For the umpteenth time, another appeal has gone to the Ondo State Government to pay the arrears of gratuity due to retired staffers of Owena Press Limited, publishers of The Hope newspapers, a newspaper publishing organization wholly owned by the state government.

The appeal was made on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, by the Chairman of Forum of Retired Staff of Owena Press, Mr. Banji Ayoola, who said that the non-payment of the gratuity for years has worsened the health challenges of members of the Forum and turned many of them into beggars in their twilight years.

From investigation, at least, five of them are bedridden with heart related ailments while six have died due to lack of money to take care of their health.

According to Mr Ayoola, joined the stable from The Guardian, and retired as Editor of the newspaper, the forum wrote a passionate letter of appeal to the Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu on the matter, but that nothing positive has come out of it despite the Governor’s acknowledgement of the letter.

“It is sad and saddening that there is nothing merry in the ongoing festive season for our members, many of who are wallowing in penury and battling age-related illnesses.

“It is sad that many of those who faithfully and meritoriously served the government and people of Ondo State in their productive years are now left to the vagaries of life in the evening of their lives.

“I can tell you that about six of our members have died of sicknesses that are easily treated, if money had been available, while some are bed-ridden and unable to help themselves.

“Many have resorted to selling off landed and other properties in order to keep body and soul together, while others who have little or nothing to fall back on have been reduced to the indignity of begging.”

The former Editor recalled that the forum had written to the Governor on the matter. “The Governor did acknowledge the letter and directed that action be taken on it.

“But till now, we only hear rumours of the letter moving from one office to another and that it had finally been sent to the office of the HoS for onward transmission to Mr. Governor.

“Our hope was raised when the Governor promised to offset gratuities and pensions from the recent bail out, but it now seem that our hope was misplaced.

“We are, once again, appealing to the government to help us and bail us out of penury and wasting away alive.

“Our case is especially pathetic as staffers of the organization are not entitled to pensions; all they get is the gratuity which has now gone unpaid for over a decade.”

Pastor Christian Ike an associate pastor of the Citadel Global Community Church, CGCC, a Pentecostal church owned by fiery pastor, Tunde Bakare’s has spoken on the N9 billion loan the church owned Wema Bank.

Reports said in the course of the week that the bank was planning to take over the church for failure to restructure the loan.

But Pastor Ike, believed to be one of the senior pastors in the church, in a message on his social media platform WhatsApp,titled “Pastor Bakare and the WEMA BANK – No Case Submission!” said there is no cause for alarm over the indebtedness.

The pastor in the message to some members of CGCC to douse the tension over  the loan said Pastor Bakare has spoken about the loan in October 25, 2021 interview granted to Thisday newspapers.

He said Citadel is structured in a way to pay the loan, noting that the said N9bn is being renegotiated.

Part of the message reads “do not Cry more than the bereaved. In any event, NO ONE IS BEREAVED. SO WHY THE NOISE?

“Pastor Bakare and the WEMA BANK – No Case Submission!

“Sometimes, it seems people already have preconceived ideas, pictures, responses or innuendos to give on any issue; most times as a decoy to settle scores, troll on and provide cover for Hatchet Job for some desperados. Ride on.

“Just remember to read Pastor Bakare’s Interview on This Day Newspaper of October 25, 2021, very well to have a credible information and sources for an informed argument.

“Those who read and have heard him pronounce unashamedly and without any duress, but for his well known transparency and accountability culture, times without number, understood that the old building, the landed property and his personal recognition form the basis of the loan negotiation.

“Secondly, there has also been in place a re-negotiated terms of repayment with WEMA BANK, and this is on-going.

“Thirdly, the facility is a structured multipurpose use to pay for itself.

“Nothing has changed from any of these established facts on the ground. So why the noise, why the unfounded cacophony? Save for any other hidden interests, or paid master’s jobs.

“We can only save ourselves unnecessary dissipation of energy to spew tonnes of biles on readily available facts of a matter for those who care to read, know and be objective,” Pastor Ike said.

Ekiti State @ 25: Stakeholders Unbundle Blueprint For Development, Flay Leaders

Ekiti State

By Ayodele Oni

Founding fathers of Ekiti State have taken a look at development in the State 25 years after its creation and scored it zero, describing various political leaders at different times as pursuing separatist agenda.

Ekiti State was created from the Old Ondo State, in 1996 by the late Head of State, Sani Abacha and has been governed by four elected Governors, two military administrators and two sole administrators.

A stakeholders parley, organized in Ado Ekiti by a Group, Ekiti Future Agenda, concluded that the dream of the founding fathers has been outrightly abandoned.

Speakers at the forum in their comments and reactions, expressed disappointment about the performance of elected leaders that spent their tenures pursuing personal agenda.

The keynote Speaker, Akin Oluwadare Jnr, who spoke on the topic ‘Ekiti At 25, Rekindling And Reinforcing The Vision Of The Founding Fathers,’ hit the nail on head as he pointed out that a lot still needed to be done to put the state on a right footing as envisaged by the founding fathers.

The purpose for the agitation for the separation of Ekiti from the Old Ondo State and the hope of realizing such feat, he said  has not been fulfilled.

“I reminiscent the creation of Ekiti State in 1996 with sweet nostalgia. I was young but not too young not to know what it meant to have a state government nearer home.

“It was an ecstatic moment for all indigenes of Ekiti State, home and abroad. The excitement that greeted the announcement by the then Head of State, Late General Sani Abacha, was spectacular.

“Should the question be asked if Ekiti has fulfilled the vision of the founding fathers, we will have many answers, depending on who is answering, but one thing that is sure is that opinions will vary and there will not be any agreement.

“What this tells us is that there is a lot that still needs to be done. I said this because it should be glaring for all to see if the state is on the right path to fulfilling the vision of the founding fathers with little disagreements from all stakeholders.

“Two things are possible. It is either the vision is not clear enough or it is far from being realised as conceived by the founding fathers.

“Our role here today, therefore, is to develop a blueprint that can complement the efforts of those in the leadership of our dear Ekiti State for her continuous development.

“A development plan can sufficiently answer for a vision if it was ever written. A development plan that is well written and gazetted can form the bedrock of the development agenda for successive administrations irrespective of change of government or ruling political party.”

Area to be given priority, according to him include quality of education at the

primary and secondary levels because the foundation is very important.

“Alumni associations have a role to play to complement the efforts of the state government

in restoring quality to our primary and secondary schools, particularly in provision of amenities and infrastructure.

“There is also the need for old students associations to organise periodic social and educational awareness programmes in their former schools to inspire the younger ones.

Other Speakers highlighted, insincerity, inconsistency, and over politicizing of every issue as major factors slowing down the pace of development in the state.

They believed that successive governments in Ekiti State have continued to run the affairs of the state in their own ways and pattern without recourse to the vision of the founding fathers.

The convener of the forum, Mr. Adesina Adetola stated that the programme was initiated to enable stakeholders brainstorm and come up with concrete resolutions on how to move the state forward.

He said the various resolutions reached during the meeting would be forwarded to appropriate authorities for necessary implementation.

Autopsy: FG, Cote D’Ivoire Set On Diplomatic Row Over Death of Nigerian Trader

A diplomatic row is brewing between the federal government and Cote D’Ivoire over the autopsy report  released by the West African neighbour on the death of a Nigerian, Itunu Babalola who died in police custody last month.

The 21-year-old Babalola’s death on November 14 shocked many Nigerians who have demanded justice. She was a trader in Bondoukou, Cote d’Ivoire, before she had a dispute with an Ivorien who broke into her apartment. She reported the case to the police, who later turned the case against her and locked her up where she eventually died.

Speaking on the autopsy  report released by the Cote D’Ivoire  governmenter,  Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM said the report was unacceptable to the Nigerian government, adding that the Buhari administration will ensure that justice is served on the matter.

The NiDCOM boss said: “I am not a doctor, but when I saw the autopsy result which stated, ‘Sepsis complicated by acute respiratory distress,’ that was not acceptable to me without being a doctor and I don’t think that should be accepted. I believe Nigeria should not let this matter go just like that. We need to demand justice.

“How come after everything had been done, the case was transferred to Abidjan? The lawyer’s fee had been paid and what was just left was for her to get out of prison.
Everything had been done and we were so sure. Even the prosecution said the girl was not guilty of the crime she was accused of, so how come she died just like that?”
Dabiri-Erewa said further that the autopsy report is unquestionable. According  to her  “we are not God, but these questions must be answered. This autopsy result, even to me, doesn’t appear acceptable. What is ‘Sepsis complicated by acute respiratory distress?’ How did it happen? I hope that we will not let this matter go just like that.
“The police officer involved in this matter, we have reported him to INTERPOL. We are not ready to relent. That police officer must be questioned. I am sure that the Minister of Foreign Affairs will take the next necessary steps to demand from Cote D‘Ivoire a lot more information than they had given.”

Thee Charge D’Affaires of the Nigerian Mission in Côte D’Ivoire, Mohammed Gana, had disclosed that Babalola was wrongly convicted and later jailed for a crime she did not commit. He said the case was twisted by the police in order to punish the deceased.

“Investigations carried out also indicated that the former prosecutor, in collaboration with the police, twisted her case and accused Babalola of human trafficking which led to her conviction for 20 years even though the sentence was reduced to 10 years from which she has served two years so far,” Mohammed  said.
