PDP Tackles Lai Mohammed, Says APC, FG Deluded, Habouring Self-Confessed Terrorist

The People’s Democratic Party, PDP, has put a lie to the claims made on the developmental strides of the All Progressives Congress Government, APC, led by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Party was reacting to the Press Conference addressed in Lagos on Thursday, December 30, 2021, by the Minister for Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed where he painted a rosy picture of the Buhari Government.

A statement signed by PDP’s National Publicity Secretary,  Debo Ologunagba, described the claims by Mohammed, for instance, that the FG was fighting terrorism, as  delusional.

PDP: “Is it not unpardonable that instead of facing its failures to secure our Nation, the APC-led Government which is still harbouring a self-confessed terrorism apologist, is celebrating the mass killings currently going on in our country by engaging in self-praise in the face of failure while terrorists continue to ravage our nation?”

The PDP said the APC-led Buhari administration is an all-round failure, and declared: “Today, our Nation has become the poverty capital of the world due to the mismanagement, corruption and recklessness of the APC Government.”

The party accused Minister Mohammed of dishing out “‘a litany of lies and another celebration of falsehood by a failed administration.”

Following is the full text of the statement entitled: FG’s 2021 Performance Claims, A Litany Of Lies

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dismisses the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government’s performance claims as reeled out by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed today as a litany of lies and another celebration of falsehood by a failed administration.

“The Performance claim by the APC government can only be a product of delusions of grandeur; a joke of the year, as the word on the street, where the real Nigerians are, is completely at variance with the fabricated lies and imaginary performance indices contained in the report.

“Is it not unpardonable that instead of facing its failures to secure our nation, the APC-led government which is still habouring a self-confessed terrorism apologist, is celebrating the mass killings currently going on in our country by engaging in self-praise in the face of failure while terrorists continue to ravage our nation?

“On economy, the APC government had become so addicted to falsehood that it had forgotten that Nigerians are aware that the PDP government handed over a $550 billion economy (largest in Africa and 26th globally) and a diversified economy to the APC in 2015.

“Today, our nation has become the poverty capital of the world due to the mismanagement, corruption and recklessness of the APC government.

“In 2015, Nigeria’s external debt was $7.3 billion. Today under the clueless APC government, in just over six years, the external debt has reached over $38 billion and counting, with no corresponding investment in the economy or infrastructure.

“Today, the poverty rate in Nigeria is 71 percent as against 32 percent when the APC government took over in 2015. Between January and September 2021, over $1.8 billion dollar was expended on debt services, yet the APC government can shamelessly claim to have performed in 2021.

“It is self-evident that only the APC gangsters can claim to have performed in the face of life discounting experiences of the ordinary Nigerians. Thankfully Nigerians now know them for who they are.

“The APC government has nothing to say to the fact that under its watch, the naira has collapsed from N198 to a dollar handed over to it in 2015 to over N500 today;  that the pump price of fuel has risen from N87 per liter in 2015 to N165 per liter today; that unemployment has risen from 7.3 percent in 2015 to over 33 percent today and that price of food items have so skyrocketed that millions of Nigerian families are no longer able to afford their daily meals and other basic necessities of life.

“Furthermore, it is ludicrous that the APC government claimed to be fighting corruption when it has become the haven of compromised and corrupt politicians. Evidently, that is why it has no answer to reports of how APC leaders and their cronies stole over N25 trillion from various government agencies. It also explains why the APC government has failed to prosecute its officials and APC leaders openly indicted for corruption.

“On infrastructure, it is indeed appalling that the APC-led government could list projects that exist only on paper as achievements and even attempted to appropriate projects by PDP administrations.  The PDP challenges the APC government to name one landmark project it conceptualized, commenced and completed in the last six years.

“Instead of being guided by fact file of manifest failures, the APC is oblivious of the pains and tears that their almost seven years of proven disappointment have inflicted on Nigerians.  For this insensitivity, the APC should await the inevitable verdict from Nigerians in the 2023 elections.”

CAN Mourns Desmond Tutu, Describes Him As A Great Oracle Of God

Desmond Tutu

By Ayodele Oni

The Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN), has commiserated with the government and the people of South Africa on the death Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

CAN, in a statement on Thursday, signed by the President, Dr Samson Ayokunle, described the late Bishop as “a great Oracle of God.

“We thank God for a life well spent by His great Servant who used every given opportunity to speak a potent voice against the defunct apartheid system of racial segregation and white minority rule in South Africa.

“The revered Bishop was a South African Anglican bishop and theologian, known for his work as an anti-apartheid and human rights activist.

“He was also the first African Bishop of Johannesburg from 1985 to 1986 and then Archbishop of Cape Town from 1986 to 1996.

“He was also known as a theologian who sought to fuse the  Black Theology with African Theology.

“We recalled with nostalgia when from 1978 to 1985, Tutu was the General -Secretary of the South African Council of Churches.

“That was when he emerged as one of the most prominent opponents of South Africa’s apartheid system of racial segregation and white minority rule.

“Although an activist yet he was an advocate of non-violent protest and foreign economic pressure to bring about universal suffrage.

“In 1985, he became Bishop of Johannesburg and in 1986 the Archbishop of Cape Town, the most senior position in southern Africa’s Anglican hierarchy.

“In this position, he emphasised a consensus-building model of leadership and oversaw the introduction of female priests.

“Tutu played prominent roles that led to the release of the foremost anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela from prison in 1990 and they both led the negotiations that ended apartheid and introduce multi-racial democracy.

“After the 1994 general election resulted in a coalition government headed by Mandela, Tutu was appointed the chairman of the historic Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate past human rights abuses committed by both pro and anti-apartheid groups.

“This Commission was used to heal all the wounds of apartheid inflicted on both the Whites and the Blacks.

“Tutu will always be remembered for his strong support of Palestinians in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict especially his strong belief in Israel’s right to exist.

“His strong criticism against the  perceived anti-people policies under the South African Presidents of Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma further made him a respected voice of the voiceless.

“Our hearts go to his immediate family, the South African Churches and the common man of that country who saw him as their advocate and protector. May God console and comfort them all in Jesus’ Name.”

Fire Outbreak: NEXT Cash & Carry Mgt. Suspects Foul Play; Requests Thorough Investigation

Next Cash - Peter Obi

By Gideon Njoku

The Management of NEXT Cash & Carry Supermarket, Abuja, which was razed by a massive fire in the morning of December 26, 2021, suspects foul play in the tragedy which shook not only Abuja, but Nigeria.

It has, therefore, asked the Government and all agencies concerned to for a thorough investigation to expose the truth.

The multi-billion Naira Supermarket, regarded as the biggest Supermarket in Abuja, is wholy owned by Mr Ndibe Obi, a younger brother of Peter Obi, a former two-time Governor of Anambra State, and the Vice Presidential candidate of the  Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2019 Presidential  election.

The Supermarket suddenly went up in flames on December 26, 2021, at about 10.45am. No life was lost, as the Supermarket was billed to open by 12noon. But indide were some staff, including cleaners, who were getting the place ready for business of the day  to start.

In a statement signed by its General Manager, Mr Neil Pape,  the first reaction since the incident, the Management said the fire incident was not only worrisome, but capable of affecting, adversely, investment in Abuja and the country as a whole.

Pape: “The company would like to appeal to the investigating authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain the immediate and remote cause of the fire outbreak which is strange and has the effect of adversely affecting future investments in the FCT and Nigeria at large.”

Many Nigerians insist that the Supermarket was targeted because of the Peter Obi connection. Not a few people have the impression it belongs to him not knowing the chain of shops, NEXT Cash & Carry, belongs to Ndibe Obi, Peter Obi’s younger brother.

Pape, the General Manager, described the fire incident as strange. Already, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Adamu, who expressed shock at what he called a tragedy, promised a thorough investigation.

Following is the full text of NEXT Management’s statement on the massive December 26 incident which has rendered about 1000 direct staff members and over 3,000 vendors out of work.

“The shop was scheduled to open on the 26th December 2021 being Boxing Day at 12 pm. It is important to state that the cleaners, cashiers, security & bakery staff came into the shop in the early hours of 26th December 2021 to clean and get all the facets of the store ready for operations at 12 pm. The cleaners had barely finished cleaning the store when the fire started from one of the departments in the store. The staff immediately alerted the firefighters, as well as security operatives.

“They all assisted in no small measure to reduce the extent of the damage caused by the fire.

“Further to the foregoing, Next Cash and Carry Facilities & Store were built & operated according to international standards. As the General Manager of Next Cash and Carry Nigeria, I had worked in the best retail outlets in the world before joining Next Cash and Carry Nigeria and with my wealth of experience, I can confirm that the operations of Next Cash and Carry Nigeria and its facilities are of first-class standard.

“The roof covering of Next Cash & Carry building is fireproof and was built by Tower Aluminum, Kaduna. Next Cash and Carry Limited has a competent firefighting truck in Abuja which has assisted the Fire Service in several fire incidents in Abuja.

“The company has fire extinguishers and fire hose reels connected to the hydrant placed in strategic positions all within the store under the FCT Fire service supervision. The FCT Fire service conducts quarterly fire outbreak training for all staff & certifies all our operations. Next Cash and Carry has outsourced & employed a professional security company (Olode Security and Technology Nigeria.

“The company also has a staff strength of about 1,000 direct and indirect staff and over 3,000 vendors, with 200 farmers supplying items to the store.

“The company would like to appeal to the investigating authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain the immediate and remote cause of the fire outbreak which is strange and has the effect of adversely affecting future investments in the FCT and Nigeria at large.”

Anambra State Government has since lamented the incident, and extended its sympathy to the Management and Staff of NEXT Cash & Carry Supermarket

OPINION: My Precipitations

Azu Ishiekwene

By Azu Ishiekwene

No, it’s not what you think. I have read Bisi Akande’s feather-ruffler, entitled, “My Participations.” Perhaps the only connection between the memoir and what you’re about to read is a borrowed inspiration to re-purpose the title. So, relax.

I laughed my way through the book. If you knew Akande, you would probably guess why. He writes not only the way he talks; he writes just the way he is: direct, ruthlessly guileless and almost without a sense of danger.

For the past two years, or so, I have taken on the hazardous job of popping my head around the incoming year and trying to make sense of what I suspect might happen down the road, based on information from valuable sources cultivated over the years, some desk research and a gut feeling.

I have not always used a regular title for this exercise. But considering the interest generated by Akande’s book, his gift to my yearly muse from now on might well be, “My Precipitations”, which is a variant of his book title.

On January 3, 2019, I published this yearly forecast under a different title: “2019: Facts, fiction, myths…and what matters.” In the article, I forecast, among other things, that Atiku Abubakar would lose, Fintechs would get stronger, telcos would get super-agent/banking licenses, and Manchester City, despite falling hugely behind, would win the English Premier League. I was bang on the money.

2020 was a bad year for seers worldwide, with the wreckage of many a reputation buried in the mire of COVID-19. Perhaps to the last man, futurologists missed the single most significant event that shaped 2020, and also continues to dominate the headlines to this day.

Yet, whatever the blow one’s reputation as a seer may have taken, my forecast for 2021, entitled, “Place where angels fear to tread,” published on January 8, carries some redeeming, even prophetic, value.

I recall, among other things, saying in that article: “2021 will be under the shadow of 2020, well beyond the second quarter. COVID-19, that wrecking ball which evaded the world’s telescope last year, will continue to dominate the headlines…concerns will remain about the possibilities of mutations, the prospects of a third wave and the safety and viability of the new vaccines. The history of pandemics suggests that they don’t die easily.”

Ghanaian police have stolen the thunder from doomsday preachers. They have been warned to see no evil, hear no evil and say no evil. For safety, I forecast a boom in the adoption of sign language, sociolinguistics and neurobiology in that neighbouring country. As for Nigeria, my precipitations for 2022 begin, not where angels fear to tread, but where, in spite of the gathering storm, devils are building mansions: politics.

The opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), appears resurgent. But it would face its own demons soon, as the Turks headed by Governors Nyesom Wike and Aminu Tambuwal, and even Senator Bukola Saraki, will, once again, confront the party’s aging talisman, Atiku Abubakar.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will be shaken to its foundations, but it will survive. The most problematic question for the party of course is who carries its presidential flag in the 2023 election, when President Muhammadu Buhari will step down.

Some influential members of the party, especially from the North, have been looking for an emissary to go and tell the former Lagos State governor and national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, not to run. Just like they did the last time, they are looking for someone to repeat the trope that a Muslim-Muslim ticket, compounded by old age, will not work.

Well, unless they find someone to deliver their message before the end of January, Tinubu will declare his intention and run. There will be other contenders, but former President Goodluck Jonathan will not be one of them. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, constrained by loyalty and a deep sense of approach-avoidance conflict, remains a very strong contender.

Insiders have also hinted at the possibility of a Kayode Fayemi-Babagana Zulum ticket. Yet, if Tinubu survives the ambush of the wolves in his party, the race is over.

The only reason why the ruling party has shifted its convention three times and refused to relinquish its temporary, ramshackle structure, is because it is afraid that Tinubu, easily the most prepared and invested candidate, may seize the party and pave a much easier way to the ticket for himself. But for how long will they hold out?

Currently, there are three or four main blocks fighting for the soul of the APC: One is the remnant of the hardcore CPC wing of the party, comprising the acting Chairman and Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni; the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami; and the Personal Assistant and Private Secretary to the President, Sabiu ‘Tunde’ Yusuf. A few Southern quislings are milling about them, hoping in vain for an opening.

After the passing of Abba Kyari, the ascendant wing wrested power from such TBO originals as Sule Hamma, Buba Galadima, Sam Nda-Isaiah and co. Adamu Adamu is still in it, but his health and temperament have turned his attention elsewhere.

In spite of the fissures among the major factions – the Buni-Malami-Tunde group; the Tinubu-Ganduje group; the exiles from PDP, mostly former governors; and governors/political appointees who are serving out their term – the first group will fight tooth and nail, to block Tinubu from emerging. If they have to, they will break up the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) camp by inciting alternative candidates against him.

Suggestions that the intra-party combat in the APC will lead to the emergence of a new party will fail. Some will leave, of course, as a result of bitter ticket-sharing disagreements, illusions of a so-called Third Force and the fallouts of the Electoral Amendment Bill. But in the end, the combatants know that it is their enlightened collective interest not to sink the boat however violently they may be rocking it now.

Already the party is taking steps to ensure that it not only prevails, but that the APC would retain power at all costs, and for its own benefit. Some of these steps are already known. For example, delaying the party’s convention for as long as possible and keeping an ad hoc executive on the pretext that the party is updating its register.

Or resisting public pressure to use electronic transmission of results on the excuse of poor nationwide network coverage, only to ambush the public again by inserting the provision in the current Electoral Amendment Bill, which we are now told President Muhammadu Buhari will not sign.

But the fate of the Electoral Bill will not be the joker. The real joker this year would be the ongoing effort by the political elite within the ruling party to hijack the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The process, which started after the 2019 election, has shifted gears with a recruitment system that prioritises loyalty to the ruling party. Insiders told me, for example, that at least two national commissioners were denied tenure renewal – AVM Ahmed Muazu and Okechukwu Ibeano – on account of their sterling performances: the former for the outcome of the Bauchi elections; and the latter for the outcome of the just-concluded Anambra elections, which didn’t go the way of the APC.

By August when the tenure of the 27 resident electoral commissioners will be completed, INEC would be a largely inexperienced and beholden electoral management body, waiting to repay IOUs to politicians who nominated most of them for the job. RECs whose tenures have been outstanding and who could have been retained to strengthen the system will be flushed out. The ruling party will capture INEC this year and the courts will be very, very busy.

It’s okay to debate the Electoral Bill, and we should. But like it happened in 2007, even after INEC Chairman, Maurice Iwu, dragged everyone, including ambassadors all across the country, showing off his VSAT systems in the 774 local government areas, Nigeria still had its most shambolic elections ever because the process was left in crooked hands. That scenario will play itself out again.

There will be relief on the COVID-19 front after the winter period. With the availability of treatment at early stages, the impact of the virus on the world economy will abate, easing supply chain problems and bringing significant recovery to the global economy – and of course, to Nigeria.

The Presidency has said all terrorists in the North East will be wiped out this year. That’s a prayer, not a plan. If morning shows the day, a terrorist group that has advanced from slings to scrap weapons and then on to automatic weapons and rocket launchers does not look like Boy Scouts waiting for disbandment on presidential orders from Aso Rock. The terrorists have not only planted flags and seized territory in some parts of the North East (and the North West, too), they’re collecting levies and taxes!

On the eve of a major election in Nigeria, the ISWAP/ISIS terrorists will try to extend their reach, buoyed by increasing insecurity and instability in the subregion. Foreign governments that could have helped are tired of trying. With Buhari in his lame duck phase, they’ll be looking to the next government.

There will be some bright spots though. Not in the African Cup of Nations where shabby preparations are guaranteed to cause Nigeria another heartbreak (bookies will do well to bet on Senegal or Algeria), but from Robin Hood country, England.

In the Queen’s Platinum Year, the 70th year of ascension to the throne, the New York Times is reporting that the UK could follow Germany’s lead by returning some of the country’s stolen artifacts, especially the Benin Bronzes. After three centuries, one of the world’s longest running heists could be entering its final chapter in 2022.

But it would also be the beginning of a new chapter for the World Cup which would be held for the first time in the Middle East. Qatar, the hosts, and 12 other countries have qualified as of the end of 2021. Nigeria will qualify in the final playoffs in March, but again the two African countries bet-worthy when the games begin in November in Qatar are Senegal and Algeria.

By the way, it’s the Metaverse year, which means, thanks to Mark Zuckerberg, if you don’t like where you’re at, you can make your own future with the help of an avatar!

We Are On Course – Lai Mohammed; Highlights Buhari’s Achievements; Nigerians Disagree

0
Lai Mohammed

By Ayodele Oni

As the year 2021 grinds to an end,  Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said on Thursday that the present administration, in spite of daunting challenges, made tremendous progress in 2021 in fighting insecurity, growing the economy, and reforming the oil sector to spur more investments.

The Minister, who addressed a press conference in Lagos on the achievements of the administration in the outgoing year, stated that it succeeded in emplacing world class infrastructure, providing social safety net for the poor and most vulnerable in the society.

However, not a few Nigerians absolutely disagree with Minister Mohammed. They say that insecurity has worsened to an alarming uncontrollable level. They say hunger has worsened in the land. They say unemployment is at its worst peak. And they say that Nigerians have lost hope of a better country under the President Muhammadu Buhari Government.

But the Minister says not true. Lai Mohammed:

“What we have done here is to highlight the major achievements, hence this is by no means exhaustive. That’s why we are also giving you a list of 100 achievements of the Buhari Administration in 2021.Success is not measured by the number of challenges you face, but by how you tackle the challenges.

“This is what the Administration has demonstrated by tackling insecurity headlong while also growing and diversifying the economy.

“We want to most sincerely thank all Nigerians for their support and perseverance. We want to reassure the nation that President Muhammadu Buhari is determined to leave a legacy of a safe, secure and prosperous nation. We urge Nigerians not to relent in supporting our security forces, who continue to make sacrifices to keep our country safe.

“Let me admit straightaway that the year has not been devoid of challenges. For the outgoing year in particular, the major challenge has been that of insecurity.

“In spite of this and the usual economic challenges, especially the dwindling resources available to the government, the Administration has availed itself creditably.”

Other areas where notable achievements were recorded, according to the minister include oil and gas sector, transportation, infrastructure, and social investment programme.

Speaking further on insecurity, Alhaji Mohammed stated that “The effectiveness of the military was enhanced by the leadership provided by President Muhammadu Buhari and the unwavering commitment of the armed forces and its leadership.

“The procurement of modern platforms for the armed forces has also gone a long way in raising the level of their operational readiness and efficiency, in addition to boosting their capabilities.

“During the period under review, the Nigerian Army procured 160 MRAPS, 150 trucks and 60 APCs to improve its equipment holding. Various kits were equally provided for troops. This is in addition to the provision of accommodation for troops and the recruitment of over 10,000 personnel into the Army.

“The Nigerian Navy (NN), for its part, commissioned the FALCON EYE Maritime Domain Awareness Capability, the third locally-built Seaward Defense Boat, one helicopter, 4 inshore patrol boats and 90 Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats. Over 1,500 personnel were recruited into the Navy during the year.

“The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) took delivery of 12 Super Tucanos and 3 JF-17 Thunder Fighter Aircraft and other platforms with which it has conducted several Air interdictions, provided close air support to ground troops and destroyed several illegal structures and equipment belonging to terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements.

On the economy, the minister explained that “The recovery of the economy remained on a steady path throughout the year 2021. As you are aware, gentlemen, many countries around the world face unprecedented challenges, starting from 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and Nigeria is no exception.

“The Nigerian economy was hit by the pandemic in mid- 2020, and the economic disruptions led to a recession. The poor performance of the economy during the COVID-19 era affected output growth, trade, household welfare and livelihood.

“However, this led to a quick response by the federal government with the rolling out of effective fiscal and monetary policies as well as health-related policies intended to curb the spread of the pandemic and mitigate the negative impact of the pandemic on the economy. This has yielded considerable results.”

Ekiti APC Exco Query Non-Payment Of Allowances, Demand Probe

As the  countdown to the primary election to pick a flag bearer for next year’s Governorship election, there is disquiet, occasioned by an alleged diversion of funds meant for payment of monthly allowances to some leaders of the ruling All Progressive Congress, (APC) in Ekiti state.

Investigation revealed that the money amounting to about N324 million, earmarked for the Party Executives from the Ward, Local Government and State levels has not been paid to them.

During his campaign in 2018, Governor Kayode Fayemi was reported to have promised members of the Executives at the Ward and Local Government levels a monthly allowance of N25 thousand each for a period of four years.

To fulfill the promise, it was learnt that ten percent is being deducted monthly from the salaries of political office holders at Local and State levels.

The deductions, according to investigation, are being lodged in a bank account with the Chairman of the party in the State, Secretary to State Government and Chief of Staff to the Governor as signatories.

However, while party executives at the State level receive their allowances regularly as, and when due, the reverse is the case for those on the Ward and Local Government levels.

During a parley he organized for the party executives during the Christmas holiday, Governor Fayemi apologized to the leaders that he was just being told that they have not been getting their monthly allowances for three years as promised.

His promise to investigate what was responsible for non payment drew negative reactions from the leaders, who resorted to grumblings while some of them walk out of the get together in protest.

Since after the ceremony, some of the affected party leaders have embarked on social media war, accusing the Governor of not telling them the truth about the matter, or trying to cover-up those in charge of the fund.

In one of their write-ups, the Party leaders stated that “Since they said APC, in Ekiti are naive, we have been pushed to ask further questions on the fund being deducted from all appointees account which seems not to have been accounted for.

“Our first question is this, Who are the major signatories to that particular account. Is it true that the Party Chairman, Ex-SSG, BAO and Chief of Staff are the signatories to the account?

“Is it true that 10% of the gross salary of all appointees are being deducted every month. Is it true that this 10% deduction from the salaries of appointees is around 9million naira every month?

“If it is nine million Naira, can we multiply it by 12 months, that is 108 million naira in a year.

“If it is 108 million Naira in a year, can we multiply it by 3 years. That is 324 million Naira that has gone into that account in the last 3years.

“Our further questions are : Can the party Chairman, CoS and SSG if truly they are signatories to this account come out open to either deny it or tell us the truth.

“Secondly, where is this money? Why are party members lavishing in poverty while funds that are meant to take care of them cannot be accounted for.

“Is it true that Ward Excos are to get 25k every month? Have they been paid? How many months have they been paid in the last 3years? These are fundamental questions begging for answers and it must not be swept under the carpet.

“Ekiti KETE urge all party members, delegates and critical stakeholders to show the so called anointed candidate this message anytime they come with their lies and cajole again.

“Ask them to provide answers before telling us what Tu face refer to  as ‘they want to tell us another story again ooo.’

It was further gathered that since the cat has been let out of bag, those linked with the management of the fund are reported to be doing everything possible to ensure that beneficiaries get paid in order not to jeopardize the chances of the annoited candidate at the party primary slated for January.

Abuja Belongs To North- Northern Leaders Tell Niger Deltans

By James Orji

Hakeem Baba Ahmed, Secretary, Northern Elders Forum has added a new twist to the bitter row between two elder statesmen Edwin Clark and former President Olusegun Obasanjo over the ownership of crude oil in the Niger Delta.

Obasanjo had in a recent letter to Clark insisted that the oil deposit in the Niger Delta is a national asset. But, Clark, a highly respected Ijaw leader in the oil bearing region had rebuffed him, saying such comment is unfair to the oil bearing states.

But for Baba-Ahmed, who is regarded to be controversial due to his mostly unsavoury comments against the southern part of the country,  the North can as well lay claim to Abuja, the sprawling nation’s capital, the same way Niger Delta are claiming ownership of crude oil deposit in their region.

The former secretary to the Government of the Government of the Federation, SGF who spoke on Arise Television on Thursday, said it’s unfair for Niger Deltans to claim crude oil deposit in their land, when Abuja, which belongs to the North had been appropriated by the federal government which turned the FCT to a national patrimony.

According to him, most properties in Abuja are owned by southerners who have made it their homes after the federal government had seized the Territory from the north and developed it for the benefit of all Nigerians.

He said mineral resources also abound in other parts of the country that will be used for the benefits of all Nigerians.

The NEF scribe said “what happens when we eventually find the resources to fully exploit the gold and diamond and a lot of the resources that exist in other parts of the country?

“What about the water resources, what about. Eighty per cent of the food we eat in this country are produced in the North. So, I don’t think that this is an argument that should be limited to President Obasanjo and Chief Clark. We should sit down. If the government is not going to allow a genuine productive dialogue about the way the federation works, we should do so ourselves.

“If this administration is unwilling to pay attention to the values of this, let’s wait for another administration. The world is not going to end with Buhari’s administration. President Buhari may be hostile to or this administration may be hostile to discussing these sensitive, but necessary debates, we can do that later.

“We are willing, we are open and we are looking forward to sitting down with PANDEF, Afenifere and Ohanaeze to discuss not only the issue of the use of assets but other issues that are central to the unity of this nation.”

The Ijaw leader had criticised the federal government for focusing more on the Niger Delta crude oil while gold and other solid mineral resources were being exploited in states such as Zamfara

Prepare For Mass Protest Next Year, Ex-ASUU Boss Warns Nigerians

By James Orji

Nigerians should prepare for a mass action against any unfriendly government policies in the new year, Prof. Omotoye Olorode, a former  Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has said.

The former ASUU chairman said Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, labour unions, market men and women, analysts and others are being mobilised to resist economic hardship in the new year, even as the federal government is planning to  hike the prices of essential goods, such as fuel, gas, electricity and others.

Olorode’s spoke to The Guardian in on Wednesday in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, barely two weeks after the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC warned the federal government to prepare for mass protest across the country if it goes ahead to remove petrol subsidy.

The Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed had in October hinted that the Buhari administration will end the fuel subsidy regime by middle of 2022. The minister, however, said poor Nigerians will be paid N5000 monthly as cash palliative to cushion the effects of removing fuel subsidy removal. Many Nigerians have rejected the planned removal, saying more people will be thrown into poverty.

Warning Nigerians to prepare for the inevitability, the don said Nigerians must be ready to resist any attempt by the Buhari government to impose more hardship on them through unfriendly policies. He said union leaders are prepared to lead the masses on a showdown with the government.

According to him, “We are mobilising against general economic hardship in the country. The trade and labour centres, civil society organisations, journalists, working-class people, market women and others should get ready.

“People should get ready for mass action against the increase of prices of items in the country and the proposal to increase price of fuel.”

In a letter by NLC General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, to the executives of the Union in the 36 states of the federation, two days ago, it directed members to embark on a mass protest against the federal government moves to increase fuel prices in the new year. Buhari Assures Manufacturers Of Forex

Muhammadu Buhari at NUGA

By Fola James

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, MAN that his administration would give the association more access to foreign exchange for the purchase of raw materials and machinery. But the president, however,  said government will only provide forex for equipment and raw materials that cannot be produced locally

Buhari gave the assurance on Wednesday after the leaders of the association paid him an advocacy visit in Aso Rock, Presidential Villa, Abuja, led by MAN president Mansur Ahmed.

According to Buhari  “Our strategic plan to boost manufacturing activities in the country is on course. We will continue to improve the patronage of locally made goods, bridge the gap between skills required by industry and those provided by our tertiary institutions and ensure seamless access to long-term finance for our Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises (SMEs).

“We recognise that MAN remains a key stakeholder in this journey and we will continue our engagement with you,” he said.

Buhari said the government has been supporting the nation’s private sector because of its potentials to create more jobs, urging MAN to work harder to  advance the nation’s manufacturing sector.

“I beseech you to continue to support the Government in our quest to provide the appropriate environment that will attract the necessary investment both domestic and foreign for the upliftment of the nation’s economy,” he said.

President Buhari also used the occasion to highlight the giant strides his administration has made in the area of providing critical infrastructure for the economy.

Buhari said “These projects are there for all to see. Furthermore, we are vigorously pursuing reforms on ease of doing business and currently putting in place other necessary policy measures and incentives that will guarantee full recovery from the consequences of COVID-19, sustain economic development and further shield the economy from the potential impact of fluctuations in the price of crude oil in the global market.

”I have listened carefully to all the challenges enumerated by the President of MAN and would like to assure you that, as we have done in the recent past, we will consider some of the constraints that are yet to be fully addressed, especially those that align with our policies and programmes for economic recovery and sustainable development.

”Let me assure you that this Administration is fully aware that the survival of Nigeria lies in Agriculture and having a viable domestic manufacturing sector. I must emphasise here that when I say Agriculture, I also refer to Agro-Allied business, which is the value-added component in the value chain.

”A strong manufacturing sector creates more jobs and wealth for our people. It will usher in sustainable economic prosperity because we will produce what we consume as a nation and generate foreign exchange by exporting surpluses and by import substitution,” the president said.

OPINION: Nigeria’s 2023 Presidency: Time For Ndigbo To Back Senator Anyim Pius Anyim

0
Anyim Pius Anyim

By Vitalis Unachukwu

Nigeria’s 2023 Presidency is not for grabs by anyone without requisite political tutelage.

People from the South East are watching the rest of the country with keen political interest , to see if they would be denied the opportunity of presenting a credible candidate for the office of President, come 2023.

It’s a historical fact , that of all the geopolitical zones of Nigeria, only the Igbos of the South East, have not been allowed to produce the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, since the end of the Civil War.

There’s no way the Igbos would feel politically secure and integrated in the mainstream of Nigeria’s power structure, unless they are given a sense of belonging , accommodation and opportunity to bid for the Presidency of the country,  like the North , South West and South South of the country.

Only the South East Zone , inhabited by the Igbos has not been treated fairly and justly in this respect.

Equal Political leadership aspiration and representation, is the basic right for the major ethnic partners that make up the Nigerian Union and not the exclusive political preserve of the North or any other section of the country.

It has been stated time and again that , there can be no peace without justice, because all the troubles in the world emanate from the ambit of injustice and denying people their due under the law and political rights.

Nigeria’s unity is in limbo and groggy , as it portends a risky gamble , if we as a nation, fail to allow justice prevail this time in the political leadership representation of the South East Geopolitical Zone of Nigeria.

Doing what is right is worth doing well irrespective of whose political ox is gored .

Is truly fixing Nigeria to be working well for all Nigerians, an issue to be politicized or over politicized as against leaving the nation in shambles to benefit only a few powerful, privileged ones?

I think politics should be jettisoned ashore while we pick a sound political Aristocrat and Democrat to carpenter our broken system and make it functional again, for the good of all and to the greater glory of God.

Nigeria only works for a powerful minority when it is in a dysfunctional state as it is at the moment .

Democracy is the people’s business to make their system of government work for the greater common good.

We cannot afford to fail again this time around , now that people have started to indicate interest to run for the highest office in the land and lead our nation.

Already , we have a Moses in the waiting, ready to lead us to our elusive promised land:

HIS NAME IS SENATOR (DR) ANYIM PIUS ANYIM, (GCON) , Former Senate President and Leader of the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), who has all it takes to reshape our nation with fresh leadership vision.

There’s no one from the South East Geopolitical Zone that has his political clout and stature to lead our nation at the moment.

He’s the most suitable and credible candidate for the Presidential Job .

Everyone who has been a keen follower of events in Nigeria knows this fact like the back of one’s hands , political sentiments apart.

His senses of political sagacity and perspicacity, brought to bear on his unassailable political leadership experience, are sound track records of service and unquestionable Presidential , material credentials for the highest office in the land.

He’s a political colossus , standing tallest above those warming up in the rear to run for the office of President, which is never a largesse for political favoritism and settlement.

How honorable and transparent are the so called “bigwigs,” as Nigeria’s Presidency is not a matter of cash , looted by other political hooligans, and is not for all comers .

Apart from Senator (Dr) Anyim Pius Anyim , the rest have no solid political milestones and clout to equal Senator Anyim in this bid .

What we are talking about is the candidate on whom the Presidential cap fits.

Other political runners, should rethink their bid and back up the man who is well endowed to lead us at this crucial, critical time of our nation’s democratic history .

They should search their consciences and refuse the prompts and divisive agenda of the North and rally one candidate, namely Senator Anyim in wrestling power from the North , otherwise, they would be politically useless and irrelevant in the nearest future.

There’s no gain saying  the fact that trying the impossible is often counterproductive with bunch of regrets.

The worst that can happen to a politician is the reality of discovering being used and discarded after mortgaging one’s conscience through oaths of secrecy and political slavery.

It’s on record that some of the runners bastardized the public treasuries of their States , to the point of bankruptcy and insolvency, with the unpatriotic hope of amassing so much to aid their Presidential bid , as they conducted themselves in eight years of power brigandage with chaotic political legacies on the political saddle in their States.

Citizens of their States are preponderant in their conclusions on how rural they left them and now want to use resources looted from the States to run for office in order to lead the country.

Has anybody of political courage bothered to ask bastardly rich politicians , how they made their billions and even trillions, after being in office for only 8 years of two terms of office , with no one accosting them how they made their political fortunes, while allowing them move freely with their political loot to mesmerize the rest of their fellow citizens, under the direct watch of the nation’s leadership and powers that be , making nonsense of the existence of the EFCC , which is rendered to a toothless bulldog in the unbiased assessment of Nigerians .

They want to hoodwink Ndigbo and cheat us over again, after mortgaging their souls and consciences to doing the bid of their Northern mentors against the collective Igbo interests.

Some of them have no credibility and lack apparent leadership qualities cum credentials, direly needed today, to move Nigeria out its political tsunami and dungeon.

Ndigbo knew the clandestine political activities of these political desperados and can never trust them again to be our political standard bearers in clinching Igbo’s turn of Presidential representation at Aso Rock .

They claim to be money bags , far from being visionary political bigwigs and zealots.

They refuse to appreciate the hard ball politics of contemporary times in Nigeria that days are gone , when the Igbos were treated as political outcasts , bootlickers , Butt cleaners of Northerners and regarded as inconsequential because the North had their field day in rubbishing our political interests , after realizing the importance of integrating Ndigbo in the political leadership of Nigeria and other scheme of things , after the Biafra-Nigeria Civil War .

The failures of past political leadership of Nigeria, most of whom came from the core North , to bury the ghost of the Civil War , fight for ethnic , peace reconciliation and treat every part of the country equally on the basis of justice, equity and fairness , as enshrined in our non autochthonous Constitution, is the bane of today’s political agitation for Biafra Referendum, Political Restructuring and other demands from the Federal Government .

These agitations will never end or be made to go away, no matter the political gambits of those currently on the political leadership saddle .

Nigerians badly need a change of leadership in the country and cannot wait to see it happen.

Only Senator Anyim holds the ace and political will to reshape Nigeria with his wealth of political, legislative, administrative , legal , intellectual, moral leadership experience, which would guarantee the hope forward for reuniting the country .

An APC government failed to use eight years it arrogated itself to improve the lot of Nigerians.

To save Nigeria from being a laughing stock before the International Community, a change of government is desirably imminent, under the helmsmanship of Senator Anyim , whose charismatic leadership qualities and age are Presidential materials for the next political dispensation .

Nigeria is currently a sick nation and direly needs an expert Physician to get well and recover .

Senator Anyim is undoubtedly that Physician Nigeria needs at this moment of need , to gain a clean bill of health .

Our monstrous problems as a nation do not require politics of exclusion, seclusion, mudslinging , back knifing , toe scraping and use of vitriolic jargons to sell one’s non reputable, non existent, dishonorable personality .

Those making the hell of noise at running should be prepared to defend their records of public service and present themselves to the audience of public opinion and be ready to make appropriate restitutions for improprieties in office and should use their period of political opportunism to retire from active politics, and allow credible candidates, imbued with true spirit of public service to run and represent our people, instead of hanging in there , constituting themselves into political obstacles and spoilers of our democracy .

All citizens of the Igbo nation across the world and all lovers of progressive government, should rally their bulldozer support behind Senator Anyim , in his divinely approved Presidential bid .

That’s what Ndigbo should do , because it’s the right thing to do.

Rallying behind one credible candidate and stonewalling any attempt by the North to infiltrate , use and abuse us , as was the case in the past , is the most appropriate thing to do .

First fool is not foolish, but second fool is proper foolishness.

Things must get a head if we want to reclaim our political identity and accept integration into Nigerian Politics of today.

The days of arm chair politics, playing the ostrich and playing to the gallery, when we should be at the center of political action, refusing a second fiddle role, are gone for good .

We should today stand up to be counted and speak truth to power without mincing thoughts and words .

We must be prepared to hand over an enduring political legacy to our children and future generations, and keep the flame of fire of political courage alive and blazing , so that future generations of Ndigbo, would appreciate the sacrifice we made for their future.

It’s time to back Senator Anyim solidly to represent us and lead our nation to the long elusive promised land.

It’s the right thing to do .

Believe. Aspire and Achieve .

Happy New to Ndigbo where ever you may be in our planet.

May Chukwu Okike ABIAMARA, the God Almighty, Whom we trust , bring to perfect accomplishment, the great work He started in us for His Greater Glory.
