The Imo State Police Command has confirmed a bloody attack on the Divisional Police Headquarters, Mgbidi, by gunmen.  The attack had one fatality – a Police Inspector. One other Policeman, also, sustained injuries.

According to a statement released on Saturday by the Command, and signed by the Spokesman, Chief Superintendent of Police, Michael Abattam, the gunmen invaded the Division in the early hours of Friday, January 14, 2022. Abattam said they came in a white hilux, and even though they were repelled after a serious  exchange of gunfire with the Police, a Police Inspector paid the supreme price.

There was no fatality on the side of the gunmen who escaped in their vehicle, but Abattam said they sustained injuries before escaping. He said a manhunt has started vigorously, and appealed for any information that could lead to their arrest.

Following is Abattam’s statement on the sad incident:

“Sequel to the modified and invigorated strategies emplaced by the Command under the watch of the indefatigable Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Rabiu Hussaini psc, to checkmate all criminal activities within the State;especially, attacks on Police Stations, on the 14th January 2022, at about 2045 hours, the Command’s Tactical teams at Mgbidi Police Station repelled an attack by some hoodlums who came in a white Hilux vehicle shooting sporadically, and attempted to gain entrance into the station but were repelled by the ever gallant Imo Command’s Tactical teams and the Police operatives of the Division who positioned themselves professionally.

“They engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel.  In the process, the attackers were suppressed almost immediately, having suffered a huge defeat, with a number of them sustaining various degrees of bullet wounds, they retreated and escaped in the Toyota Hilux vehicle they came with. And were given a hot chase by the Police operatives.

“Consequently, a vigorous and aggressive manhunt of the hoodlums is ongoing with the sole aim of tracking and arresting the fleeing hoodlums since they cannot go far because of the huge damage done to them.

“However, in the course of the attack, a police Inspector lost his life, while another sustained a minor bullet injury on his hand.

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police CP Rabiu Hussaini psc, commended the officers and men for their gallantry and urged them not to relent in their efforts until all criminal elements and their partners are apprehended and made to face the full wrath of the law.

“He then appealed to Imolites for the continuous support and collaboration by giving security agencies especially the Police, credible and timely information and to report any person seen treating bullet wounds or hiding within the community to the nearest police station for prompt action.”

For months, a number of Police facilities in Imo have come under the attack of hoodlums.

Tinubu Group Fights Over Ekiti Governorship Ticket, Adeyeye, Ojo Lay Claim To SWAGA Support

Members of the South West Agenda,(SWAGA) a group in Ekiti State championing the Presidential bid of former Lagos state Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, seems divided over the choice of candidate for the Governorship election coming up in June.

The Group, headed by Senator Dayo Adeyeye, which has almost divided the All Progressive Congress, (APC) in the State has concluded plans to present only one candidate in an apparent bid to clinch the Governorship ticket.

Investigations revealed that since the Group leader, Prince Adeyeye decided to join the Governorship race, members are now divided on a choice.

This is because another member of the Group, Mr Kayode Ojo, had earlier signified his intention to vie for the Ekiti number one seat and has been going round to sell his ambition.

Kayode Ojo, is from Central Senatorial District while Adeyeye hails from the South, whose people have been agitating for zoning of the Governorship seat to the area.

Some members of SWAGA in Ekiti State who spoke on the development within the group, expressed the fear that it may cost them the Governorship ticket if not addressed before the primary election.

From investigations, no member of the group from the Ward to State level makes the Exco list, while none is a political appointee or member House of Assembly, that are automatic delegates expected to vote if APC decides to adopt Indirect Mode of Primary to pick its candidate.

Campaign Media Director for the Gubernatorial ambition of Senator Adeyeye, however, said that his principal remains the sole candidate being backed by the South-West Agenda, (SWAGA), for the June  election in the state.

The Director, Oluwayomi Abegunde, pointed out that it was strange that some individuals are claiming to be SWAGA candidate in the forthcoming election.

According to Mr. Abegunde, Prince Adeyeye started the struggle of SWAGA about two years ago and it would be unwise for a non-member to lay claim to the supports from the group.

“We are all aware that Prince Dayo Adeyeye is the National Chairman of SWAGA. The struggle didn’t start today, Prince Adeyeye has worked tirelessly for years to make SWAGA what it is today. So, why should someone be telling a blatant lie to seek votes?

“Those claiming to be SWAGA candidate has not participated in any of our activities. If they claim to be a part of the movement, let them proof their membership by showing the world their contributions.

“Let me reinstate again that Prince Dayo Adeyeye is the sole candidate of SWAGA in the Ekiti Gubernatorial election.

“Every other person claiming to be a SWAGA candidate is a joker without any political structures. I’m challenging them to also call for SWAGA Excos meeting in Ekiti State if truly they are members.”

Meanwhile, from the time table on the Governorship activities released by the APC, the sale of forms to aspirants who have interest in contesting June 18 2022 Governorship Election in Ekiti State closes today (Saturday) January 15.

It began on Tuesday, November 16, 2021.

The last day for submission of completed forms and accompanying documents to the APC National Secretariat is scheduled for Today, January 15, 2022.

Screening of aspirants will take place on Tuesday, January 18th 2022, while publication of claims and objections will be held on Thursday January 20th, 2022.

Screening appeals is scheduled to take place on Sunday, January 23rd, 2022, while the Primary Election will take place on Thursday, January 27th, 2022 and Election Appeal will take place on Friday 28th, Saturday 29th, January 2022.

Eight aspirants have visited the National Secretariat to obtain Forms, among them are; Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji (BAO), Otunba Demola Popoola (ODEP), Prince Adedayo Adeyeye (PAAM), Kayode Olubunmi Ojo (KO), Bamisile Olufemi (BAFEM), Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (MOB), Bamidele Faparusi (FAPPY) and Otunba Olu Afolabi Oluwasola.

Kanu: IPOB Locks Down SE On Jan. 18, Declares 17th, 19th, 20th Free

0

The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, has said that there will be no lockdown of the South-east on the 19th and 20th of January, 2022.

However, there will be a total lockdown of the Zone on January the 18th, the day its Leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is expected to appear in Court for the continuation of his trial at an Abuja Federal High Court. January 19 is the day of judgment at an Umuahia High Court in a suit Kanu instituted against the Federal Government.

A statement signed by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said that it is understood that some people are “trying to create confusion about these dates by dishing false information and propaganda   trying to create confusion in Biafra land. IPOB never declared sit-at-home on 19th and 20th of January 2022. Therefore, we want all Biafrans to go to their normal business on these days without fear.

“For clarity sake, we reiterate that there will be no sit-at-home on January 19th and 20th. Nobody is expected to interfere with either human or vehicular movement in those days under any guise.”

The statement emphasized that IPOB has only one Central Command, and warned: “Anybody issuing order for sit-at-home on 19th and 20th of January is not a member of IPOB. Such persons are working against the interest of our leader and the entire struggle for independence. They should be disregarded”

Following is the full text of the statement.

THERE WILL BE NO SIT-AT-HOME IN BIAFRA LAND ON JANUARY 19TH AND 20TH – IPOB

“We are the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB under the command of our indefatigable Leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Following our Leader’s  upcoming court proceedings on the 18th, 19th and 20th of January 2022 next week, we wish to remind Biafrans  that there will be only sit at home on 18th of January, and not 19th and 20th of January. In keeping with our avowed solidarity with our Leader, the entire Biafra land will be on lock down only on January 18 for obvious reasons.

“Biafrans should understand that 19th January is the judgment day in the suit by our Leader against the Federal Government which is pending before an Umuahia High Court. So, there will be no sit-at-home on that day.

“Again, we don’t want to compound the pains of our people, hence, we will limit the sit-at-home to only January 18. Biafrans and residents of Biafra are free to go about their businesses without molestations on 19th and 20th January. Anybody found enforcing non-existent Monday sit-at-home on 17th, 19th and 20th is criminal and must treat as such, IPOB leadership have given order and that order is what signed.

“Everybody must be careful because this waves that is coming will consume many and every principal of IPOB mostly the coordinators must know that it will bounce on their heads if they don’t checkmate the activities of members and call them to order.  IPOB is not village or social club where everybody will behave untoward to people like cultists.

“It is on the table and to the knowledge of IPOB leadership how some principal officers were encouraging evils in IPOB without minding the repercussions and consequences but we want to make categorically known to them that it will come back to him or her that encouraged evil against his or her fellow human beings

“For clarity sake, we reiterate that there will be no sit-at-home on January 19th and 20th. Nobody is expected to interfere with either human or vehicular movements in those days under any guise. Any detractor or agent of darkness caught obstructing  peoples activities in Biafra land on January 19th and 20th in the name of enforcing sit-at-home will regret his or her actions.

“We realise that some unscrupulous and traitors are trying to create confusion about these days and dishing false information and propaganda trying to create confusion in Biafra land. IPOB never declared sit at home on 19th and 20th of January 2022. Therefore, we want all Biafrans to go to their normal business on these days without fear.

“Anybody issuing order for sit at home on 19th and 20th of January is not a member of IPOB. Such persons are working against the interest of our leader and the entire struggle for independence. They should be disregarded.

“For the umpteenth time, IPOB is under one Central command and Control , and doesn’t have parallel or factional leadership. The Directorate of State (DOS) under the command of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is in charge of the global movement of IPOB.

“Anybody who is not loyal to DOS is an impostor and should be disregarded.

“We expect our people everywhere to adhere to this directive and refuse to be misled by sacked members of IPOB in Europe and America.  IPOB remains unshakeable, built and rooted on the rock and will remain so until the freedom for Biafra is fully achieved.”

By Fola James

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, LCCI  has lamented the huge loss to federal government’s tsuspension  of micro-blogging  site. Twitter. The Chamber said businesses in the  country lost  a whopping N10 trillion  to the seven months ban. The Buhari administration, on Monday,  lifted the ban on the social media platform, saying Twitter has agreed to comply with all its demands, including opening an operational office in the country.

Festus Keyamo, the minister of Labour, said after the suspension that the country is better off now that the micro-blogging site has agreed go operare wighin the nation’s  extant laws. Keyamo said, “for those who prioritised politics over patriotism and exhibited disingenuous righteousness on Twitter suspension, they can now see that with all the FG conditions to which Twitter agreed, Nigeria is eventually better off for it. Congratulations Nigeria.”

Kashifu Inusa Abdullahi, the Chairman, Technical Committee, Nigeria Twitter Engagement and Director-General, National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, Kashifu had on Wednesday, disclosed in a statement, that the federal government  lifted the suspension after recommendations  by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami.

The statement read: “The Federal Government of Nigeria directs me to inform the public that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the lifting of the suspension of Twitter operation in Nigeria effective from 12a.m. of 13th January, 2022.

“The approval was given following a memo written to the president by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Ibrahim. In the memo, the minister updates and requests the president’s approval for the lifting based on the recommendation of the Technical Committee, Nigeria-Twitter Engagement.

“You may recall that on 5th June 2021, the Federal Government suspended the operation of Twitter through an announcement made by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed. Thereafter, the president constituted a seven-man presidential committee to engage Twitter Inc.

“Subsequently, in its wisdom, the committee set up a 20-member technical committee comprising all relevant government agencies. The committee engaged and worked directly with the Twitter team.

“The immediate and remote cause of the suspension was the unceasing use of the platform by some unscrupulous elements for subversive purposes and criminal activities, propagating fake news and polarising Nigerians along tribal and religious lines.”

But speaking on the financial loss to the suspension, the Director-General of the LCCI, Dr. Chinyere Almona, urged the Federal Government to create an enabling regulatory environment and  supports for global technology companies to thrive.

Almona said, “the Federal Government’s press statement conveying the lifting of the suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria is well received and commendable. In business terms, the cost of the seven-month shutdown of Twitter operations in Nigeria is estimated to be N10.72 trillion (26.1billion dollars) according to Netblock’s Cost of Shutdown Tool.”

She explained  that digital platforms have become a viable tool for business operators  and individuls to reach their diverse audiences across the world.

“Currently, the Information and Communications Technology sector is one of the growth drivers in the economy even as we see additional activities of digital platforms adding more potential to the sector.

“We, therefore, urge the government to create an enabling regulatory environment that supports global technology companies in achieving their potential and are sustainably profitable,” she said, adding that improving Nigeria’s digital infrastructure from a policy perspective would boost healthcare delivery, agric-technology, learning, e-governance, and fintech,” she said.

2023: ACF Warns Nigerians On Tinubu’s Health

The Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF has warned Nigerians to avoid a situation where somebody with serious health challenges will become the President of the country. The Forum spoke amidst the presidential ambition of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu who, according to his critics, is not fit to rule the country due to his health challenges.

The former Lagos state governor  and National Leader of the All rogressives Congress, APC was, last year, in London for three months to receive treatment for an undisclosed ailment. Many fear that a Tinubu Presidency would be a replication of he tenures of Presidents Umaru Yar’Adua and Muhammadu Buhari, who spent most part of their presidency treating ailments that kept them away from office. To avoid such situations, ACF has urged Nigerians privy to Tinubu’s health to present evidence that he’s not fit to rule the  country.
In the absence of such critical evidence, the Forum said , the former governor, who made his presidential ambition public,  last week, should be allowed to proceed with his presidential bid in 2023.
ACF spokesman  Emmanuel Yawe, stated this, on Friday, amid a resolution  by Southern and Middle Belt leaders that they will not back a Northern candidate for presidency.
According  to him “if people have issues or evidence about his (Tinubu) health, let them come out and speak. Let them provide evidence that he is not strong enough to contest for the Presidency or hold the office.
“The people, who have the evidence that Tinubu is not strong enough for the office of Presidency, should save us the agony of having a sick President in office. They should speak out.The Forum said the Pre6 Yar’ Adua’s situation must not be allowed to repeat itself.
ACF said  “so, if we know that somebody is sick, we should not allow him to take over that office. It is a serious office that will determine the future of millions of citizens. In a complex country like Nigeria, we should not allow somebody that is not medically fit to occupy such office and mess all of us up.

“President Muhammadu Buhari is always travelling abroad for medical attention, and Nigerians would be organising demonstrations to force him back home. It was really embarrassing. We should not allow such things to happen”.

After months of speculations, Tinubu, after a meeting with President  Buhari in Aso Rock, Presidential Villa, said he has made up his mind to contest for president.

“I’ve informed the president of my intention but I have not informed Nigerians yet. I’m still consulting. And I have no problem consulting. I’ve not set a parameter of limitation to the extent of how many people I will consult.

“You will soon hear. All you want to hear is the categorical declaration. You’ve gotten that truth from me that I have informed Mr. President of my ambition and you don’t expect more answers than that,” the APC  stalwart  said.

2023: Fayemi Debunks Presidential Ambition, Pledges Support To Tinubu

…Denies Endorsing Oyebanji To Succeed Him As Governor

For months, speculations that Ekiti State Governor, John Kayode Fayemi, is nursing the ambition to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari come 2023 have been.

To further strengthen the rumour, members of his Cabinet had gone ahead to print posters and billboards campaigning for the Governor to contest for the Top seat in 2023.

But Fayemi has denied such ambition. He said he had never nursed the ambition of becoming President of Nigeria. And to confirm this, he has endorsed the aspiration of his political mentor and All Progressives Congress, APC, National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has declared his interest in running for the top seat in 2023.

It would be recalled that Fayemi had earlier laid to rest the speculation on Wednesday, 12th, January, 2022 during his visit to the Former Lagos State Governor’s residence in Lagos.

Fayemi also pledged his loyalty and support towards the actualization of the presidential aspiration of Asiwaju Tinubu.

The Ekiti State Governor had assured Tinubu of mobilising adequate support for him across the entire South-west and promised to ensure the rallying of a formidable front for the Southwest geo-political zone to enable the clinching of the party’s presidential ticket by Asiwaju Tinubu.

But not a few people have put a lie to Fayemi’s denial of a Presidential aspiration come 2023. A source close to him told this magazine: “If he changed his mind, it must be of recent. He has been nursing the idea, and praying that his Governor-colleagues would support his aspiration. He was hoping that Tinubu and Vice President Osinbajo, who has not declared his interest yet, would cancel each other out. Perhaps, he has seen he would make no headway, hence his support of Tinubu.”

As regards the Governorship Election in Ekiti State, Fayemi vehemently denied the speculation that he has anointed the immediate past Secretary to his Government, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji as the party’s Governorship candidate in the forthcoming polls in the State.

He assured there would be a level playing field for all aspirants vying to succeed him as Governor of the State, adding that the party is prepared to field the most popular candidate who emerges at the party Governorship primaries on January 27, 2022

“In Nigeria, People Who Behaved Like Kanu Have Been Forgiven – Obiozor “

0
Professor George Obiozor

By Adesina Soyooye

Professor George Obiozor, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide President, has said that the continued detention and prosecution, by the Federal Government, of Nnamdi Kanu, Leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, smacks of discrimination against the Igbo Nation.

Obiozor, who spoke  in an interview on Channels Television’s programme, Politics Today, said Kanu’s case requires nothing more than a political solution as has been done for others from some areas of Nigeria.

Obiozor: “In some areas of Nigeria, people who behaved like Kanu have been forgiven, given amnesty, and reintegrated into the Country.”

Obiozor said the Igbo were not asking from President Muhammadu Buhari nothing  more in the Kanu case, except for the President to resort to his bag of ‘prerogative of mercy’, as had been done for others, and release Kanu unconditionally.

Obiozor: “So, also, is what we are asking for, for the President to use the prerogative of mercy to look into the situation in the South-east. Prerogative of mercy is exclusively the right of the President.

“We are not talking of the use of Court, or use of force. Use of force is dangerous to everybody, and definitely, it will not solve the problem, it will make it worse.

Citing examples on how such cases, as Kanu’s, had been handled in other parts of Nigeria, he said: “Several times, I, as President of Ohanaeze, including last week, made a similar statement concerning Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB. And, I have made the reference you are totally aware of.

“You saw South-south’s Avengers, MEND, and the rest, and how the matter was resolved. You saw how, even, the present Boko Haram, are being forgiven and rehabilitated.

“The problem of Federalism is that the sensitivity is very much on the surface. If you don’t do to the others as you have done to one, you will have problems. That is what I mean by precarious  balance which must be maintained by any leadership in any country like Nigeria. It is not anything strange; it is really an honest demand.”

Kanu has been in the custody of the Federal Government, being prosecuted at a Federal High Court for sundry alleged offences, including terrorism and treasonable felony.

Buhari recently reneged on the promise he made to some Igbo leaders led by 94 year-old Mbazulike Amaechi, who appealed to him to release Kanu. He told them it was a difficult request, but promised to look into it.

A couple of weeks ago, he insisted Kanu should face the cases against him in Court, as he, Buhari, has no intention  of intervening in cases before the Judiciary.
