Atiku Visits Wike To Mend Fences; VP Offer Speculated Amidst Strong Opposition

Atiku Visits Wike

By Gideon Njoku

As he did in 2019, victorious  Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, has visited Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, at the Governor’s Lodge in Abuja.

Atiku’s visit comes on the heels of his victory over at the PDP Presidential Primary held in Abuja on Saturday May 28. Atiku beat Wike to a respectable second place- 371 to 237 votes.

In 2019, Atiku had, also, visited an angry Wike to appease him after he defeated Wike’s favourite, Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal to pick the 2019 ticket.

Ironically, in 2022, it was Tambuwal who did Wike in when he tilted victory in favour of Wike.

Tambuwal, also, a strong Presidential aspirant, stepped down for Atiku, and ordered his supporters to vote Atiku. Before the last count of the votes, an upset Wike stormed out of the venue. And, even though Wike had pledged, just before voting started, that he would support, fully, anybody who picked the ticket, he was still to congratulate Atiku 48 hours after he lost.

Atiku’s visit to Wike, in the company of a number of his supporters and stakeholders, is to solicit for his support and understanding.

In the months leading to the Presidential Primary, Wike had vehemently opposed Atiku’s aspiration, insisting that the Presidency should rotate to the South. There are speculations that Wike did not mean he would support Atiku when he made  the pledge to support any eventual winner. “Anybody but Atiku”, a source told this medium.

However, an unconfirmed source told TheSource (Magazine), that a possible offer to Wike as Atiku’s running mate is on the cards. Having come second in the Primary with an appreciable number of votes, added to his war chest, many think he should be given the running mate ticket. But a source said it will not be that simple.

Not a few people are against the speculated move. They say Wike, given his temperament, will not be a suitable running mate.

Said a Party chieftain who pleaded anonymity: “Wike is not suitable.  He is brash and raw and arrogant and autocratic. It is for the same reason we were against his picking the Presidential ticket. That was why we put pressure on Tambuwal to step down for Atiku. It will be a divided Presidency if he runs with Atiku. They will quarrel.”

On a thank you visit to Tambuwal, National Chairman of the PDP, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, had hailed him as the “hero of the Convention”, for swaying victory to Atiku.

Before the Convention, Wike had consistently boasted that he was not running to be a Vice Presidential candidate.

Peter Obi and Pat Utomi at Labour Party

Few days after he dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and defected to the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi has unanimously won the Presidential ticket of the Labour Party.

Until May 20, 2022, Obi, a two-time Governor of Anambra State, was a Presidential aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP

Obi’s unopposed election early Monday afternoon, May 30, 2022, was during the LPs National Convention at Orchid Hotel, Asaba, Delta State.

An aspirant under the Party, a perennial elective office contester, Prof. Pat Utomi, stepped down for him. Utomi:  “Obi must be given the opportunity to govern this country”, he said as he withdrew from the race.

The LP is suddenly rated to make an unprecedented impact on the Nigeria political scene following Obi’s entry. He has a rock star followership amongst millions of youths.

Pensive Okorocha Appears In Court, Remanded

Rochas Okorocha in Court

By Adesina Soyoye

After the drama of the absurd which played out during his arrest at his Maitama residence, Abuja, last week, former Imo State Governor, and Senator Representing Imo West, Rochas Okorocha, was on Monday, May 30, 2022, arraigned before a Federal High Court, Abuja.

Looking pensive, and wearing a flowing Agbada, and a brown cap, his appearance was stripped of his usual liveliness. There was no laughter. No broad smiles. No waving of hands to associates and admirers.

Security was tight.

Okorocha’s arraignment followed his unconventional arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, after he refused the Commission’s many invitations to him, and made a scene when Operatives went to his residence to arrest him.

He refused to open the door and follow them and, instead, holed up inside, praying and making calls. He said there was no Warrant of arrest or a Court order which would warrant his arrest by the EFCC.

After a more-than six hour stalemate, the EFCC Operatives entered the house through the roof and arrested him. He has been in the EFCC custody since then, and was arraigned Monday before the Honourable Justice Inyang Ekwo.

Okorocha, a Presidential aspirant under the All Progressives Congress, APC, is, along with an APC chieftain and ally, Anyim Nyerere Chinenye, and five Companies,  facing a-17- count charge which borders on alleged stealing and laundering of the sum of N2.9billion belonging to Imo State.

When the charges were read to him, he pleaded not guilty, and so did the others arraigned with him.

He was, however refused bail on Monday, as Justice Ekwo ordered that he and Chinenye be remanded in the EFCC Custody till Tuesday when the request for bail will be argued.

Ekwo has set the dates for trial against June 6,7,8,9.

Okorocha may, likely, be granted bail on Tuesday. The Judge had threatened to strike out the case at the last hearing because the EFCC was unable to produce him in Court.

Okorocha was the Governor of the State for eight years – 2011-2019. His tenure goes down in the State as the most controversial since its creation.

His successor, the Rt. Honourable Emeka Ihedioha, bowing to the cries and yearnings of the people, set up a couple of Judicial Commissions and Panels to look into some of his activities as a Governor.

On Ihedioha’s sudden exit from office after a Supreme Court ruling, his successor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, sustained Ihedioha’s decisions.

The  Imo State Government has, since, started implementing a number of the recommendations of the Judicial Panels.

PDP: Southern/Middle Belt Leaders Say Atiku’s Emergence Poses Threat To Nigeria’s Unity

Atiku Abubakar and Nyesom Wike

By James Orji

Barely 48 hours after Atiku Abubakar emerged as the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, leaders from the Southern and Middle Belt Regions have rejected him.

The Leaders, under the aegis of Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum, SMBLF; said the emergence of the former Vice President will have serious political consequence for the country.

Atiku emerged the PDP flagbearer on Saturday, May 28, after defeating his closest rival, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State at the party’s National Convention held in Abuja.

In a statement signed by the Forum’s leaders on Sunday, the SMBLF said the PDP jettisoned the peace and unity of the country by voting for a Northern candidate during the convention.

“At a time when the corporate existence of the country should be tantamount to all and sundry it appears the unity and peace of Nigeria mean little or nothing to a segment of the nation’s political elite.

“This was evidenced in the PDP special convention, which was held on Saturday, 28th May 2022, where certain candidates from the North were pressured, coerced, and even intimidated to step down for former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who eventually emerged as the flagbearer of PDP, in utter derision of the established principle of zoning and rotation of power between the north and south.”

The Leaders added: “Undoubtedly, the singular motive is to perpetuate the hegemony of the north, given that President Muhammadu Buhari, a Muslim from the north and of Fulani origin will be completing his full tenure of eight years by this time next year.

“SMBLF, therefore, totally rejects the candidacy of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and calls on our people of Southern Nigeria and the Middle Belt as well as all true lovers of peace and unity not to vote for him or any other Northerner in the 2023 presidential election, in the interest of posterity.

“SMBLF further urges all aspirants for the office of President from southern Nigeria to shun the conceited attitude of individualism and self-confidence, and work collectively to achieve the shared objectives.

“Again, SMBLF calls on all politicians of Southern extraction to refuse the position of a running mate to any northern presidential candidate, which will equally be viewed as subjugating their people to political slavery.”

Those who signed the statement include Bassey Ewa-Henshaw of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) south-south; Okey Emuchay, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, south-east; Jare Ajayi Afenifere, south-west; Isuwa Dogo, Middle Belt Forum, MBF; and Ken Robinson, acting coordinator SMBLF.

Meanwhile keen watchers of political developments in the country, said Southern leaders only reinforced their earlier call for power shift from the North at the end of the tenure of the incumbent, President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

The analysts, however, insist that the emergence of Atiku as PDP candidate for next year’s presidential election has also exposed the deep-seated division among Southern Politicians on the contentious zoning issue.

For instance, many Southern PDP delegates jettisoned aspirants from the zone, such as Governor Wike, Anyim Pius Anyim, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF by voting for the former Vice President during the primary election held last Saturday.

ISPC Code: UK Commends Nigerian Maritime Agencies On Synergy.

Bashir Jamoh

By James Orji

The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA Dr. Bashir Jamoh says that the implementation of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code, ISPS, is a major component of the security architecture NIMASA is implementing in the Nigerian maritime domain.

Jamoh stated this while receiving in audience the Deputy Head of International Maritime Security Operations Team, IMSOT, Jim Hamilton who led a team on a working visit to assess the level of compliance of some Ports facilities in the country with the ISPS Code.

The DG who was represented by the Agency’s Executive Director Operations, Shehu Ahmed, noted that the importance of an effective implementation of the ISPS Code regime cannot be overemphasized. This, he said, necessitated the Nigerian government to domesticate the ISPS Code Implementation Regulations since 2014, bearing in mind that it is an integral aspect of the Safety of Life at Sea, SOLAS, Convention.  He also welcomed the peer review mechanism from IMSOT.

“We at NIMASA have such a peer review arrangement with the United States Coast Guard, which has been highly effective in developing capacity for ISPS Code implementation. We are working to extend the relationship to other countries.

“This we believe will ensure that our personnel possess the requisite skills and competencies to execute their responsibilities in line with the mandate of the ICIR 2014. The importance of the exposure of our personnel to the legal regimes and security operations of other contracting governments is not lost on us,” he said.

While assuring the team that steps have been taken to address areas of concerns raised during their last visit in 2018, the NIMASA DG informed the IMSOT team that the Agency is also taking steps to tackle activities of pirates in the Gulf of Guinea through the Deep Blue Project initiative of the Federal Government, in addition to the Suppression of Piracy and other Maritime Offences, SPOMO Act, which is gradually yielding results.

Speaking after a working visit to some Port Facilities in Lagos, the Deputy Head of International Maritime Security Operations Team, IMSOT, Jim Hamilton expressed satisfaction at the level of cooperation and synergy existing among Government Agencies in the Nigerian maritime industry adding that they will share knowledge with NIMASA to ensure optimum implementation of the ISPS Code in Nigeria.

Hamilton also expressed the readiness of IMSOT to share ideas on their operations in the United Kingdom, UK and to train personnel of the Agency to foster better cooperation with Nigeria.

“The initiative will not only foster collaboration and cooperation through knowledge acquisition and sharing among member states, but also consolidate the gains in implementing maritime security as well as identify areas of improvement for both parties,” he said.

Anambra: Mrs Obiano Confronts Another Lady

0
Ebere Obiano

By Adesina Soyooye

Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano, the immediate past First Lady of Anambra State is set to confront another Lady. She is set to do battle with her. And, it is going to be an epic battle.

But, hold your breath.

It is not going to be a physical battle, the type she had with  Iyom Bianca Odimegwu Ojukwu, wife of former Biafran Leader, Dim Emeka Odimegwu Ojukwu, Ikemba Nnewi, which earned her a slap from Bianca at the swearing-in ceremony of Professor Charles Soludo Anambra as Anambra State Governor.

This battle is a political one.

But the campaign could be dirty.

Mrs Obiano has the unenviable record of using obscene choice words on women. And, Oduah brooks no nonsense.

Mrs Obiano has just picked the Senatorial ticket under the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA. To pick the ticket at the Primaries held at the Chuba Ikpeazu Stadium, Onitsha, Mrs Obiano, popular as Osodieme, beat three men, including, surprisingly, her husband’s former Chief of Staff, Mr Primus Odili. The other two were a former Commissioner for Information,  Mr Tony Nnaecheta and, Mr Samuel Onwuteaka. Why Odili chose to confront her former boss’s wife is  the question many are asking.

Mrs Obiano beat him by 152 votes to 122 to pick the ticket. By picking the ticket, she seeks to represent Anambra North at the Senate in 2023. That is the beginning of the battle.

Mrs Obiano is seeking to displace another woman, a no-push-over, the incumbent  Senator, Princess Stella Oduah. A former Aviation Minister, Oduah is seeking a third term in office under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Reports say between the two women, there is no love lost. Oduah had, at a point, decamped to APGA during the First Ladyship of Mrs Obiano. It was a short spell. She quit and went back to the PDP, just as she also had a short spell in the All Progressives Congress, APC, which she defected to a few weeks to the Anambra Governorship election in November 2021.

But for APGA, speculations are that it was Oduah’s not-too-smooth relationship with Mrs Obiano which saw her out.

Anambrarians are looking forward to the battle,  in 2023, between these two women – Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano and Senator Stella Oduah.

Peter Obi: “Atiku Is My Leader, Elder Brother”; Congratulates Him; Wike Yet To Congratulte PDP Candidate

0

By Adesina Soyooye

The presumed Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, says the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar is his leader and elder brother.

Obi said this in a congratulatory message to Atiku on his victory,  Saturday, May 28, 2022, as the Presidential candidate of the  PDP.

In a post on his twitter page, Obi prayed for continous blessings upon Atiku.

Obi: “On behalf of my family, I sincerely congratulate my leader and dear elder brother, H.E.@ atiku, on his emergence  as the 2023 presidential flag bearer of the @official PDPNig.

“I pray that the Almighty God who sees your reasons will continue to bless you now and always. ”

However, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, who Atiku beat to the second position – 371 – 237 votes – is yet to congratulate Atiku. Wike had, while addressing the delegates, just before voting started, promised to support, fully, whoever won the ticket.

He left the venue before the end of the Convention when he knew he was losing the election.

Obi was Atiku’s running mate in the 2019 Presidential election. They lost to incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Until Obi defected from the PDP to to LP, on May 20, 2022,  he was a Presidential aspirant under PDP.

PDP Presidential Primary: Ayu Hails Tambuwal “As Hero Of Convention”, Visits Him; Robs Pepper On Wike’s wound

By Gideon Njoku

Less than 24 hours after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar defeated his closest rival, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, to pick the Peoples Democratic Party’s Presidential ticket, pepper has been robbed on Wike’s very fresh and painful  wound.

Robbing the pepper was no less a person than the National Chairman of the PDP, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, the man who should have ameliorated his pain.

In what many people see   as a tactless and undiplomatic comment, Ayu  hailed Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, as: “The hero of the Convention”

Ayu made this comment when he visited  Tambuwal at his lodge in Abuja after the Convention. With Ayu was his entourage which included among others, former two-time Governor of Jigawa State, who was also a Foreign Minister during the President Olusegun Obasanjo Government, Sule Lamido, and the former Governor of Imo State, who was also a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, and a close ally of Tambuwal. Ihedioha was Tambuwal’s Deputy in the House.

The visit was, apparently, to thank Tambuwal for bailing Atiku out, and swinging victory his way during the Presidential Primaries which held at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, in Abuja on May 28, 2022.

Tambuwal, like Atiku and Wike, was a Presidential aspirant. The race to pick the ticket was seen by most Nigerians as a two-way race between Atiku and Wike. They were the frontrunners, and, reportedly, the front-spenders. So, the race was tight. Seeing that it could swing either way, Tambuwal did the unexpected. Just before voting began, he stepped out, and announced that he had withdrawn from the race. He did not only withdraw, he said he stood down for Atiku, and  directed his supporters to vote Atiku.

He had not a few delegates, having campaigned hard, and tied down, at least, most  of the North-west delegates, plus most of Imo State’s.

That changed the course, and gave Atiku a comfortable lead.

When Tambuwal stepped down, Senator Dino Melaye, the one who has just lost his bid to go back to the Senate, after a four-year absence, ran out; hugged Tambuwal, and lifted him off the ground in appreciation.

At the count of the last vote, Atiku beat Wike by 371 votes to 237. There were 12 of them in the contest, including, two former Senate Presidents, Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, South-east, and Dr Bukola Saraki, North Central.

On the thank you visit to Tambuwal, Ayu hugged him hard and tight. Thanking him profusely, he hailed him as “the hero of the Convention” for stepping down for Atiku.

Ayu: “Thank you, thank you, thank you. You are the hero of the Convention.”

Tambuwal’s stand, many say, is one of the ironies of life. In 2019 at the PDP Presidential Primaries in Porthacourt, Rivers State, Wike pulled all stops to back  Tambuwal. When Atiku won, an angry Wike had to be appeased. It strained his relationship with Atiku, which was patched up later.

While addressing the delegates just before the casting of votes on Saturday, Wike promised to support, fully, whoever won the election.

He left the venue before the last vote was counted. At the time of filing this report, he was yet to congratulate Atiku.

Arrested AGF, Idris, Kills Fmr. Gov. Yari’s Joy; EFCC Arrests Him Over N80 Billion Probe

Abdulaziz Yari

By Adesina Soyooye

The joy of a former Governor of Zamfara State,  Abdulaziz Yari, has been cut short. Just after he won, unopposed, the ticket to contest for the Senatorial Zone of  Zamfara West, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has swooped on him.

Back from Zamfara, Yari was relaxing in his Abuja house when operatives of the EFFC came knocking, and arrested him.

His problem began with the arrest, a couple of weeks ago, when the Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, was arrested at the  Kano Airport over an alleged stealing of public funds to the tune of N80 billion.

Yari was arrested, allegedly, in  connection with the Commission’s ongoing investigation of the  suspended AGF.

Idris, has been in the custody of the EFCC since his arrest on May 16. He has, also, been suspended from office.

EFCC Investigators are working on an alleged  lead that Idris conspired with others, including Yari, to steal the public funds.  Out of the  N80 billion, Yari was allegedly connected with the sum of a-N20 billion transaction.

The former Governor who was also the immediate past Chairman of the powerful Nigeria Governors Forum, is not new to the EFCC. He has been on the Commission’s radar, and has been picked up for questioning a couple of times. He was always released after questioning.

Yari was the Governor of the bandit-ravaged Zamfara State between 2007 and 2019. He handed over to Bello Matawalle but the relationship between the two men has since gone sour.
