The month of May has been a sorrowful month for the Make-Believe Industry in Nigeria popularly known as Nollywood. The industry has lost a number of its good artist.

First, it was Chinedu Bernard, an upcoming actress that died in Enugu State. While the entertainment industry mourned Chinedu, it was dealt another blow as up-and-coming actress Francisca Choji’s death was announced.

Francisca’s body was found at Rayfield Resort hotel in Jos, Plateau State on May 1. Gabriel Ubah, the spokesperson of the Plateau state police who confirmed Choji’s demise said the fast-rising actress was found floating in the water at Rayfield Resort.

In the same week, on May 4, actor David Osagie, better known as Sir David, died after filming on set the previous day.

Sir David was best known for his role as king. Some of his movies include My Sorrow My Pain, Agunna and Lost Battle.

Just a week after, Nollywood suffered yet another loss on Thursday, May 12 as veteran actor, Gbenga Richards was confirmed dead after battling an unknown ailment.

The once vibrant actor, who was a force to reckon with in the 1990s and early 2000s, according to reports, suffered from a series of ailments and raising money for his treatment became difficult because he had fallen on hard times.

Richards’ first appearance as an actor was to represent Nigeria with Hubert Ogunde at the Second World Black and African Festival of African Culture (FESTAC) in 1977.

He also featured in blockbuster movies like Sango, Mirror in the Sun, Betrayal by Love, Fighting Machine and a host of others.

Atiku On A Charm- Offensive; Visits Losers In PDP Presidential Race; VP Slot On The Cards B/w Wike, Anyim

Atiku Abubakar Visis to Other Aspirants

By Adesina Soyooye

Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,  Presidential candidate in the 2023 is on a charm – offensive.

Atiku began barely 48 hours after he clinched the ticket at the Primaries held at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja on Saturday, May 28, 2022. With a comfortable  371 votes, he defeated 12 others after the Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, stepped down for him. The National Chairman of the Party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, on an apparent thank you visit to Tambuwal, hailed him as the “hero of the Convention.”

Atiku’s  closest rival was Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, who scored a respectable 237 votes. Feeling betrayed by, especially, Southern Governors, Wike left the venue before the end of the Convention.

Atiku, however, began fence-mending for a united front in order to defeat the All Progressives Congress, APC, at the 2023 Presidential polls.

His first port of call, with his entourage, was Governor Wike’s Lodge in Abuja. After the visit, Atiku, who was a former Vice President and the 2019 PDP Presidential candidate, tweeted: “In continuation of my commitment to bring everyone on board in ensuring that the @officialPDPNig stands as one united, party, earlier today, I visited His  Excellency Gov Nyseom Wike at his Abuja residence. This is a continuous process. -AA”

From Wike’s House, he went to visit former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki who scored 70 votes.

He also tweeted:

“To unify our country Nigeria, we have to start with bringing every member of the  @OfficialPDPNig under the covering of the umbrella. My visit to @bukolasaraki not long ago underscores this commitment. More to follow. -AA.”

The Presidential candidate also visited another Presidential aspirant, Anyim Pius Anyim, who was a Senate President, and a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

After meeting Anyim, Atiku tweeted:

“I was also at the residence of Senator Anyim Pius Anyim to pay him a courtesy visit and consult with him on strengthening the cohesion in our great party, @OfficialPDPNig. -AA #OneNigeria.”

With the Presidential Primaries out of the way, the attention is now focused on who Atiku’s running mate will be.

Two names have come up according to sources, Wike and Anyim.

Those rooting for Wike say he has made a lot of sacrifices for the Party, and did well at the Primaries.

However, those in favour of Anyim insist that the South-east should be given a feeling of belonging in the PDP, having not produced either the President or Vice President.

Consultations continue.

Ohaneze Ndigbo Denies Anger Against Atiku

Atiku Abubakar and Nyesom Wike

By Charles Igbo

The apex Igbo Cultural Organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has denied threatening not to vote for the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, during the 2023 Presidential  election.

A statement attributed to Ohanaeze, signed by one Mr Ishiguzoro, a few days ago, had said that Ndigbo will not vote for Atiku in protest against his emergence as the PDP Presidential candidate instead of an Igbo.

But the officially recognised Ohanaeze Ndigbo, which President is Professor George Obiozor, has denied issuing any such statement, describing it as fake meant to deceive the public.

In the statement signed by its spokesperson, Chiedozie Ogbonnia, Ohanaeze Ndigbo  denied the statement. It also dismissed those who issued it  as “mischief makers, impostors, charlatans and unscrupulous social climbers”.

Regretting that such statement came out at all, the statement continued:

“For the avoidance of doubt, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural body, led by Ambassador Professor George Obiozor has not issued any press statement on the candidacy of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

“Ohanaeze awaits with keen interest, the full outcome of the ongoing primaries by all the political parties before it can issue a press release with respect to the Igbo position on the 2023 general election.”

The Ohanaeze spokesperson asked the public to ignore any statement which did not emanate  from the Secretary General of Ohanaeze, Okey Emuchay.

“Don’t Blame Tambuwal; My Brothers Betrayed Me; History Will Judge Them” – Wike

Aminu Tambural and Nyesom Wike

By Adesina Soyooye

In his first reaction to his loss of the Presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has exonerated the Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, from his loss.

He put the blame on Southern Political leaders, especially those from the South-south who betrayed him. “Some Governors from the South were used to sabotage our victory. I have left them to God.”

Wike spoke when he addressed Rivers State Party Stakeholders on Monday. He spoke of the betrayal he suffered in the hands of those he called his brothers.

Wike said he entered the race on the basis of the agreement they reached that   the Presidential seat rotates to the South. He said he thought the agreement was reached with human beings, but he noted: “Some people are no human beings,”

Wike: “As far as I’m concerned, there is nothing to worry about. I contested that election based on the agreement with all the Southern Governors and the leaders of the South that the Presidency should go to the South.”

Sadly, Wike said, it is a shame that some people from the South were used to sabotage his victory, the victory of the South. “It is a shame.”

Wike: “We have done our own part. We never betrayed anybody because it is not in our blood to betray. But it is a shame to those people, some Governors from the South who are the people they used to sabotage our victory. But, however, we have shown them that we are not like them.

“There are people you think are human beings, but they are not.”

The Governor was proud of his performance in the face of the sabotage he suffered. Indeed, he was not humiliated. He placed a respectable second place by scoring 237 votes to Atiku’s 371. The third person, former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, trailed Wike with a score of 70 votes.

Wike: “We have made history, and for those betrayers, history will judge them. But as I have said earlier, I won’t abandon the party.

“They underrated us but that has changed. We made them not to sleep and eat.

“This country does not belong to any particular zone, it belongs everybody.”

Recall that just before voting  started on Saturday, Tambuwal stepped down from the contest, and directed his supporters to vote Atiku. That changed the course of the race, and tilted the victory comfortably towards Atiku.

The magazine gathered that South- south states, with the exception of Rivers State  which voted Wike, and Akwa Ibom which voted the State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, others voted Atiku. Emmanuel’s 20 votes were a waste, many pointed out.

Let Us Return Nigeria To Its Rightful Owners

Peter Obi and Pat Utomi at Labour Party

By Peter Obi

I thank Nigerians; especially members of the Labour Party who have gathered here since yesterday to partake in the primaries to choose the person that will fly Labour flag in the forthcoming National election to choose the President of Nigeria.

History beckons. Nigerians remain hopeful for a national rebirth, which implies returning Nigeria to Nigerians –   farmers, teachers and students, lecturers, artisans, workers, pensioners and over a hundred million poor Nigerians who are not sure where their next meal will come from.

Therefore, what you are doing today is a patriotic duty towards seeking the desired political emancipation of our dear country, which stands wounded by many years of cumulative leadership failure.

Painfully, our current dysfunctional system rewards unearned income and conspicuous consumption; allows university lecturers to remain on strike for months; keep our youths at home; and owe pensioners, who gave their patriotic sweat and their youthful energy to serve this country.

The despicable contrast is that those responsible for the mess -those elected to take care of them – have abandoned the national currency and are living in opulence and like kings, spend dollars to buy delegates as well as houses all over the world.Meanwhile, they owe most workers, lecturers and retirees.

Yes, our country stands hijacked by forces of retrogression. We are almost zero in all indices of development. As a result, our future, especially those of the youth and generations unborn is in ruins. We have become a laughing stock among other nations, including African countries where we were once revered.

As a party that represents the workers and masses of this great nation, we are people organised and working for our economic rebirth.  As I am nominated today, I humbly proclaim that the journey towards the emancipation of the country has begun.

I note with humility that the journey is going to be a collective one that will certainly require the cooperation of critical stakeholders in our country, especially the youth, whose future has been thoroughly degraded.

I therefore thank all of you and call for your sustained support towards returning Nigeria to Nigerians from forces of bad leadership and retrogression. Such a noble tasks brooks no conscientious objectors.

I hardly use war metaphors for political analysis due to my belief that politics is not adversarial and not war. However permit me a little indulgence here, to relate what we are embarking on to the ancient battle of Thermopylae, where the Greek forces, conscious of fighting for the life of Greece held on against great odds in the defence of their country.

In the battle to re-take Nigerian, the odds are great and seemingly insurmountable, but with our commitment, patriotism and understanding that we are doing, what we are supposed to do for our country, lest she shall die, we shall move on discontent with what is and focused on enthroning what ought to be. In doing this, our battle cry shall remain: get your PVC and become part of this great libration!

Our governance mission will be twin-tracked. Secure Nigeria in every ramification: national security, human security, food security and tackling insecurity created by unemployment.

We will also seek to unite our nation by pulling our people out of poverty, and creating a new sense of nationalism and patriotism. Nigeria shall rise again: and her people will be proud to claim ownership of her patrimony. Doing so is in our collective national interest.

As I earnestly thank Nigerians for their faith in me. In the days ahead I will publish our governance manifesto, which will spell out our top governance priorities.  I assure you that no region; state, local government or communities will be left behind.

I also assure you all that the struggle continues and that victory is certainly in sight towards the guarantee of a meaningful future for our youths and making this country a respected and viable member of a 21st century world, that places high value on production over consumption.

God bless you all and God bless Nigeria.

“Don’t Take Chief Olu Falae Serious Over Utterances On SDP” – Olu Agunloye

0
Olu Falae and Olu Agunloye

By Ayodele Oni

Throwing away Yoruba culture of total respect to elders, Dr Olu Agunloye, National Secretary of Social Democratic Party, (SDP) threw salvos at Chief Olu Falae, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Presidential Candidate over his recent comments on the status of the party.

Agunloye, who reacted on behalf of SDP in a statement on Monday, attacked Chief Falae for being “mischievous” in the statement credited to him.

Chief Falae, was the foundation  National Chairman of the SDP.

Chief Falae was reported to have said that anybody claiming to be the National Chairman of the party is “floating on water,” as no convention has been held to elect his successor.

Agunloye described the statement as fallacious and malicious mis-statement, capable of distorting facts, or to influence pending court process.

He said such statement is not expected from a revered leader like Falae, the former chairman of the party, and that the statement should be seen as his personal view.

Agunloye, who maintained that the statement is grossly erroneous and misleading, said the party decided to respond to the former Secretary to the Federal Government’s claims for clarity and to put the record straight, saying: “this is necessary to show the public where Chief Olu Falae erred”

The SDP Secretary stated that Falae, who abruptly resigned his appointment as the National Chairman of the party some seven days to the 2019 general elections and publicly announced this resignation and his retirement from politics, has proceeded to mislead the public and has attempted to create a faction of SDP in Ondo state after his resignation and retirement from politics.

Agunloye, however, said the current actions of Falae to cast aspersions on SDP are completely unwarranted and are strongly condemned, and enjoined member of the public to disregard the utterances of Falae.

Putting the record straight, Agunloye alleged that Falae, who, he said, has lost touch with happenings in the party, has been romancing with the then National Vice Chairman, Supo Shonibare and his supporters while the group lured him to place unfounded personal opinion in the public domain.

“Chief Supo Shonibare who claims that Afenifere, the socio-cultural organisation in Yorubaland had directed him to take over the SDP is relying on charges of mismanagement against Chief Olu Falae, a Deputy Leader of Afenifere in order to justify his (Shonibare’s) case pending at a Federal High Court.

“INEC formally testified at the Federal High Court in the case brought by Chief Supo

Shonibare in 2020 and 2021 that the March 2016 Convention on which Chief Falae based his own election was not covered by INEC.

“This could mean that Chief Falae’s own National Chairmanship was actually in the waters from March 2016 struggling to float, but perhaps drowning, until the October 2018 National Convention which came to his rescue.

“The October 2018 Convention presided over by the same Chief elected national officers particularly those newly created by the new 2018 SDP Constitution and legitimised the appointments of the other officers including that of Chief Olu Falae himself.

“Chief Falae presided over the ratification and adoption of the 2018 SDP Constitution at the National Convention of 6 October 2018, but Shonibare is now insisting that it is only the 2012 Constitution that is the valid Constitution of SDP.”

LAHA 2023: Irregularities Mar APC Somolu Constituency Over Imposition Of Olowo

0
APC Somolu Primary Election

By Akinwale Kasali

For over 72 hours,  unrest  reigned in the Somolu Area of Lagos State and  marred the All Progressives Congress, APC, Somolu Constituency 1 Primary.

Aggrieved Youths are  angry, and that  resulted in violence. It was sparked off over an alleged imposition of an aspirant, Hon. Rotimi Olowo, the incumbent Lawmaker representing Somolu Constituency 1 on other aspirants.

Olowo is aiming to represent the Constituent for the Fifth Term, having served Four Terms, which led to crisis in the Area.

The APC Primary earlier slated for Friday couldn’t hold due the irregularities raised by the APC Electoral Officer, Olayibi Blaise.

Blaise explained that the Primary could not hold as the ID Cards meant for the 30 Registered Delegates  already in their possession  were yet to be distributed  yet, he saw the same ID Card being displayed by the Delegates.

It was gathered by this news medium that the said Delegates had received the ID cards a day earlier, was against the ethics and norms of electoral process.

Blaise stressed that this basically shows  sabotage within the APC, because the manner they got the ID Cards for the Primary was surprising, as the 30 ID Cards were still in his possession.

Findings revealed that the 30 Delegates that were already with the ID Cards are loyalist of Hon. Olowo and Hon. Kuye who are also Aspirants vying for the same position along side 10 others, including the former Somolu Local Government Chairman, Olorogun Omogbolahan Bagostowe.

Following this anomalies, Blaise stood his ground that the Primary will not hold as he will return to the APC Secretariat on Acme Road, Ogba, Lagos to explain the irregularities that took center stage.

This led to the postponement of the Primary in the Area till further notice.

Some of the aspirants have however raised eyebrows following the perceived imposition of Olowo on others.

This  led to a protest as Political Stakeholders in Somolu have condemned the imposition.

Alhaji Abdullateef Majolagbe, a major stakeholder appealed to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other stakeholders to shun the idea of imposing the candidacy of Hon. Olowo on them, and consider other aspirants too.

Meanwhile, Hon. Biodun Orekoya, the former Sole Administrator of the Council; Hon. Williams Lawanson, Printing Entrepreneur; Sheriff Adekoya, Businessman and Hotelier; Remi Ogbara, Real Estate icon, Babasehinde Ogunmuyiwa, and Lekan Osiyemi have all secured Lagos State House of Assembly nomination and expression of interest forms to step into Hon. Rotimi Olowo’s caps and shoes come 2023 election billed for March 2023.

Ondo; “After All I Did For My People, They Allowed Mimiko To Throw Me Out”, Laments Senator Akinyelure

0
Ayo Akinyelure

By Ayodele Oni

The Primary Elections of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) in Ondo state has been won and lost with some of the losers apportioning blames and pointing accusing fingers at some party leaders in the state.

The Senator representing Ondo Central Senatorial District in the red chamber, Ayo Akinyelure, was among those that lost the primary election. He was defeated by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ife Adedipe from Akure.

Akinyelure got to the Senate when he defeated his co- contestants in 2019 among whom was a former Governor of the state, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, who contested then on the ticket of Zenith Labour Party, (ZLP).

There is no doubt that Akinyelure has performed well since he got to the Senate. He is one of the Senators whose voices are heard everytime as the Chairman of the House committee on public petitions.

Aside this, he has not distanced himself from his Constituency as he is always around to have the feel of his people.

But Mimiko was waiting to take a pound of flesh from the man that roundly defeated him last time.

He got his tool, using the Senior Advocate from Akure, who he backed with support from his political allies at the Central Senatorial District and waited patiently for the PDP primary election to sting.

Ondo Central is made up of six Local Governments of Akure North and South, Ifedore, Idanre, Ondo East and West.

Senator Akinyelure, knew where the defeat came from going by his comments after the election.

Reacting to the outcome of the primary election, Akinyelure expressed regret that despite all he did to help the people of Ondo central Senatorial District, the delegates paid him back with an instruction from Mimiko that he should be voted out.

“As a ranking Senator and with all I have done for them in Ondo Central Senatorial District, the three ad-hoc delegates that favours Olusegun Mimiko, they gave instructions for them to vote me out.I am happy for this but I know my God will never fail.

“I know what I am talking about. We have six local governments in the central, by the grace of God I am still a sitting Senator.

“The election was so transparent, but I know that with the volume of what I have done for Ondo Central Senatorial District, I did not expect to be paid this way. But I have a destiny that nobody can stop.”

Former Governor Mimiko has his strength in the two Local Governments of Ondo East and West and he used this to work against the sitting senator. Before the primary, the senator was reported to have gone to the extent of giving out cars to top PDP leaders in the two Local Councils but still, they could not deliver.

Dr Mimiko returned to the PDP last year with some of his loyalists including former deputy governor of the state, Mr Agboola Ajayi and Gboye Adegbenro. Both contested for the Governorship of the state on the ticket of ZLP, former Mimiko’s party.

Since his return, it has been a case of suspicion and some members accuse him of trying to hijack the machinery of the party in the state. A member even went to Court to challenge his return to PDP.

It is not only in Ondo Central that Mimiko deposed a sitting Senator, he equally sent packing the Senator representing Ondo south, who happens to be one of his former commissioners, Nicholas Tofowomo. He was defeated by the former Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi. He once had a brief stay in PDP when he resigned as deputy governor. He contested for the Governorship primary, which he lost to Eyitayo Jegede and left to pick the ticket of ZLP.

Ajayi rejoined the PDP after the Governorship election and won the Senatorial ticket for Ondo South. Political observers in the state believe that with these victories being ascribed to Mimiko, and that if can continue with the feat during next year’s general election and deliver the state to the PDP, he would have reclaimed his number one position in the party.
