Governor Abiodun Hits Back At Tinubu, Calls Him Emperor

Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abeokuta

By Adesina Soyooye

The Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has decently hit back at former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, over what has been interpreted as a public humiliation of the Governor by Tinubu.

On a visit to Ogun State on Thursday, June 2, to hunt for delegates, Tinubu, a Presidential aspirant, in what looked and sounded like signs of desperation and frustration that the plum ticket could slip out of his hands, descended on President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and his host, Governor Abiodun.

Speaking to the delegates in Yoruba, Tinubu said he made the three men. Without him, he said, Buhari  wouldn’t have been the President. He reminded them of Buhari’s failures. He told them that that Buhari had failed three times, wept on National Television, and said he would never contest for the office of the President again. He said it took him to convince Buhari to contest, and that he was the one who installed him.

Taking on Osinbajo, he told his audience that he was the one who hand-picked him, and gave him to Buhari as his running mate. He said initially, Buhari had asked him, Tinubu, to run with him, but that the plan was scuttled by former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, who was against a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

Turning to Abiodun, he noted that he, Tinubu, had been serving the Yoruba in the past 25 years, and

then noted: “This one sitting here”, you couldn’t have been Governor  without me. He reminded the Governor of what happened on the day of the Primaries, how Abiodun’s posters were being pulled down.

Finally, he said it is the turn of the Yoruba to be President, but that turn remains his sole turn.

On Friday, Abiodun who sat through the humiliation, reacted to Tinubu. He decently, and indirectly called Tinubu an Emperor without mentioning Tinubu’s  name. He also noted that Ogun State is not a family enterprise but a public one.

Abiodun in a post: “I am not an Emperor by any chance and this is not my family inheritance. I am holding this position in trust for all the people of the State, and I have vowed to be fair, just and equitable and this is the solemn agreement  I made between the Almighty God and myself.”

Abiodun and Ogun State delegates had earlier pledged their votes to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, an Ogun State indigene, and a Presidential aspirant.

There is palpable tension in the All Progressives Congress, APC, Party, following the disqualification of 10 Aspirants vying for the Party’s Presidential ticket.

Reason for the disqualification of the 10 Aspirants is yet to be ascertained as at the time of filing in this report.

With this development, political observers say there will be rancour which could lead to some members leaving the Party in protest.

Relief for Imo State Government As Court Restrains Banks From Tampering With Funds

A High Court sitting in Owerri, has restrained five Commercial Banks   from tampering with the salaries, pensions and gratuities of Imo workers pending the determination of a suit before it.

The banks affected by the order are Zenith, Access, UBA, Union and First Bank.

Justice M. E. Nwagboso, the presiding Judge, said the order followed an exparte motion filed by the Attorney General of Imo State against the affected institutions and individuals.

Justice Nwagboso ruled that the defendants are restrained from “paying out or transferring out any funds from the account of Imo State government or from the federal account allocation committee or any other funds housing the salaries of workers, pensions and gratuities of pensioners without the express mandate of the plaintiff who is the Attorney General of the State.”

Justice Nwagboso later adjourned the matter to June 12,2022 for further hearing.

On Thursday, all Zenith Bank branches in Owerri were sealed in fulfillment of a garnishee order in favour of a former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Eze Madumere.

The Imo State Government has been owing him the sum of N1.9 billion being his entitlements when he was illegally impeached from office on the instigation of his former boss and ally, Senator Rochas Okorocha.

The impeachment was declared null and void by the Court, which order that he be paid all his entitlements. He has not been paid till date.

Why Senator Victor Umeh, Joined Obi In Labour Party; Dumps APGA

Victor Umeh and Peter Obi

By Charles Igbo

For the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, it is an avoidable loss, not a few people are saying.

One of its strong and long-standing members, Chief Victor Umeh, has dumped the Party and defected to the Labour Party.

Umeh was, also, the National Chairman of the Party for a long time.

Not many people adduce two reasons for why Umeh dumped APGA.

The first is that he was humiliated at the recent APGA Senatorial primaries.

A one-term Senator, Umeh has not been able to go back to the Senate since his first term. His hope of going back to the Senate, especially, with the victory of Professor Charles Soludo as the Governor of the State, was dashed when he was defeated. Apparently, he was shocked that he was not given a preferential treatment as the Party’s former National Chairman unlike Adams Oshiomhole, former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who, last week, won the Senatorial ticket in his Edo District, unopposed.

But many have also said that Umeh’s defection to the Labour Party is strategic – for him.

Since former Anambra Governor, Peter Obi joined LP, the Party has suddenly become a “go-to” for thousands of people, especially, youths.

In Anambra State, it is roaring like a wild fire, and Labour Party is likely to take the State during the 2023 Presidential election.

Umeh has just picked the LP Senatorial ticket, and the calculation is: Since the Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold same day, Umeh is likely to leverage on the Peter Obi effect and run away victorious.

2023: YIAGA Warns PDP, APC Against Cash and Carry Politics

INEC Media Partinership Meeting

YIAGA Africa, a Civil Society Organisation, has cautioned political parties in the country against monetisation of next  year’s election.

The Civil Society groups spoke ahead the All Progressives Congress, APC, National Convention coming up next Monday, where the ruling party’s Presidential candidate is expected to emerge.

Not a few Nigerians have  expressed outrage over the high cost of nomination and expression of interest forms by the two major political parties in the country.

For instance, the ruling APC sold its presidential nomination form for N100 million, while the PDP sold their own for N40 million.

Also, many Nigerians expressed outrage over the last PDP National Convention where huge sums of money were believed to have been used to bribe delegates. The PDP’s  Presidential flag bearer is Atiku Abubakar.

As a proof that money was actually shared to PDP delegates, one of the delegates from Kaduna, shared N7 million to people in his constituency out of his own share.

The Civil Society body said politicians must be discouraged from the use of money to buy votes.

In a statement on Friday, Samson Itodo, Executive Director of YIAGA, said political parties must ensure that candidates representing the party emerge through a transparent process, devoid of money inducement.

According to him, “As the country eagerly awaits the emergence of the Presidential flagbearers of most political parties, we wish to reiterate the strategic importance of fair and credible primaries in engendering positive democratic externalities within the context of the forthcoming civilian-to-civilian transition process in Nigeria.

“With less than a week to the June 9th deadline for the conduct of party primaries, Yiaga Africa reaffirms her earlier demand that candidates must, among other things, emerge from credible, rules-based primaries in line with democratic standards. Manipulated and stage-managed primaries remain antithetical to democratic ideals and must be prevented to the barest minimum.

“We thus call on political parties yet to nominate Presidential candidates to ensure they deliver Presidential Conventions that are not free and fair in the theoretical or abstract sense but in terms of intrinsic transparency and accountability in its accreditation, voting, and collation process.

“The so-called ‘dollar rain’ needs to be brought to a definitive end, and delegates sensitized on the necessity of voting their conscience over primordial and pecuniary considerations.

“Yiaga Africa urges INEC to enforce its regulatory powers against political parties that contravene provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 and INEC guidelines before, during and after the primaries,” the statement said.

Magistrate Detained By Police; NBA Spits Fire

The Nigerian Bar Association has slammed the Nigerian Police Force, NPF for the detention of a Magistrate, unlawfully.

The Magistrate who works with the Ikeja Division of the Lagos Judiciary was said to have been detained by ACP Aliko Dankoli on Monday.

According to The Nation, the incident happened on Monday at the Area D Command, Mushin, Lagos State.

A statement signed by NBA’s Security Agencies Relations Committee, NBA-SARC Chairman, Chief Joe Kyari-Gadzama, SAN, said the Association will take a definite action  against the Police for the unlawful detention.

“Our Committee is presently making urgent efforts at verifying the facts and circumstances surrounding the instant report  especially, as it relates to the arrest and detention of the Magistrate in question. This is to inform further steps, actions and/or decisions made from the standpoint of knowledge and information,”

Kyari-Gadzama said the magistrate and some lawyers, the report claimed, had visited the Command on a routine check of suspects in the cell based on Police Duty Solicitor Scheme to de-congest the police cells.

It was gathered that the Area Commander’s action breached procedural rules.

It took the intervention of the State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, for the Magistrate to be released and allowed to go home.

Sources said when the PDSS team led by the Magistrate arrived at Area D Command Headquarters in Mushin on Monday, they met a resistance which led to the detention of the Magistrate.

The Nation learnt that ACP Dankoli was having a briefing with DPOs when he received information that the Magistrate came to inspect the cells said to be packed with suspects.

The arrival of the Magistrate reportedly angered him, hence the order to have the Judicial officer detained in the cell.

Dankoli’s action was said to have surprised other officers, who were aware of the Magistrate’s visit to the Command.

“This led to serious disagreement between ACP Dankoli and his second in command and there was confusion at the Command, which led to temporary break down of law and order over the shouting match between the two,” a source said.

It was not certain if the matter has been resolved between the Police and the Lagos State Judiciary, which sent the Magistrate for the routine check at the Command.

A former  Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Kpotun Idris, on September 21, 2017, launched Force Order 20 to institutionalise the PDSS in the Force. PDSS was conceived to address the crisis of irrational and pre-trial detention in police cells.

Again, Coach Peseiro Loses Second Match In Charge Of Super Eagles

Jose Peseiro

By Akinwale Kasali

Pervis Estupinian’s 45th minute strike was all the Ecuadorian National Team needed to defeat the three-time African Cup of Nations Champion, and condemned Coach Jose Peseiro to his second defeat since taking over the saddle as Super Eagles Coach.

The Red Bull Arena, New Jersey, United States of America  was filled to capacity as the Super Eagles traded tackles with South American side, Ecuador.  Both teams proved their mettle as forces to be reckon with.

Villarreal Football Club of Spain left back, Estupinan, was a thorn in the flesh of the Super Eagles defense. On several occasions, he  muscled his way past the Super Eagles defense with pace and strength, but most time, he curtailed.

Not until the last kick of the first half, that Estupinan recorded the first goal of the match with a sublime finish to send the vociferous crowd at the New Jersey Stadium to a frenzy and ecstasy.

The Super Eagles lineup was the same as the one that started in the loss to Mexico but for the inclusion of Sani Faisal who came on for the injured Innocent Bonke.

Qatar-bound Ecuador settled the fastest and Pervis Estupinan gave the South Americans the lead in the second minute off a deep free-kick. This caught both Chidozie Awaziem and Faisal flat-footed as Estupinan ghosted in behind the pair to head past Francis Uzoho.

Nigeria was denied a penalty in the 13th minute after Terem Moffi, from a pass from Alex Iwobi, seemed to have his leg taken by the Ecuador goalkeeper Alexander Domínguez but the referee and his assistant agreed it was not a foul despite vehement complaints from the Nigerians.

Uzoho made a diving save from a Jose Cifuentes curler in the 21st minute. Another defence-splitting pass from Iwobi presented a goal-scoring chance to Cyriel Dessers but Domingues made a good save. From the resultant corner, Semi Ajayi had a header saved before Moffi poked wide.

Ekong had to make a scrambling clearance in the 31st minute and he could easily have scored another own goal.

Ola Aina and Emmanuel Dennis came on at the start of the second half to replace Awaziem and Faisal. Dominguez had to be brave to save a fierce drive from Aribo in the 50th minute as the Eagles dominated ball possession and forced their opponents back.

Dennis missed a chance in the 58th as the Nigerians continued pressing and Dominguez produced another save from Calvin Bassey in the 62nd minute.

Estupinan had two bites at the cherry in the 81st minute. Uzoho parried his first shot and he blasted the rebound over with the goal at his mercy.

The match became a tetchy affair as both sides committed niggly fouls, which broke up play intermittently. Peseiro sent on Victor Mbaoma for Moffi in the 85th minute and Uzoho made a fingertip save from Jeremy Sarmiento’s goal-bound shot in the 88th minute as the Ecuadorians attacked after being put under a lot of pressure by the Eagles.

Four minutes were added on but the Eagles could not find the equaliser. Peseiro lost his second game in charge and will be keen for a first competitive win on June 9 against Sierra Leone in a Nations Cup qualifier.

Orji Kalu Denies Lawan, Says I’m Not His Campaign DG Amidst Criticisms

Ahmed Lawal and Orji

By Adesina Soyooye

The Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu who is facing a backlash, especially, from the South-east, over his alleged appointment as the Director General of the Presidential Campaign Organisation of Senate President, Dr Ahmad Lawan, has denied any such appointment.

A statement had gone viral on Thursday, with the names of members of the Campaign Organisation, which included Femi Fani-Kayode.

Not a few Nigerians concluded that the alleged appointments, coming a few days to the Presidential Primaries of the All Progressives Congress, APC,  gives the impression that Lawan has already been anointed as the candidate.

The release of the  list also came on the day Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, another aspirant, in what has been termed as signs of his frustration and desperation, literally lashed out at President Muhammadu Buhari, while on delegates-hunting inOgun State, and told him that he, Tinubu, made him President. He also emphasized that he made Professor Yemi Osinbajo, the Vice President, and made Dapo Abiodun, the Governor of Ogun State. For Tinubu, who also said “it’s the turn of Yoruba”, and Yoruba’s turn as his tenure, it is pay back time by Buhari.

It also came days after Buhari appealed to APC Governors to allow him pick his successor, just as they pick their own successors.

But Kalu, in a statement he personally signed Thursday night, denied any such appointment. He said he has not been appointed Lawan’s DG since Lawan was not yet the candidate. He said he only hosted a meeting I’m support of Lawan.  Kalu, therefore, asked that the list be totally ignored.

He said, “My attention has been drawn to a list of committee Chairmen of Ahmad Lawan Campaign Organization in which I was also mentioned as the Director General.

“The list should be disregarded as no authorization was given to the effect of its publication.

“As the Chairman of the meeting held at my instance, it is important to notify the general public that we are not yet in the Campaign proper. A committee will be inaugurated to that effect once our most preferred candidate, Senator Ahmad Lawan emerges as the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I am also running for election in my senatorial district and would rather recommend a sitting Governor who is not running for an election to chair the campaign team at the right time .

“Several private visitors who were not even part of the meeting were also reported to have been in attendance. Senator Betty Apiafi, just as Senator Uche Ekwunife who visited on a different bipartisan matter concerning the Senate was also mentioned.

“It is mischief to have included these names as part of Ahmad Lawan Campaign Organization”

Kalu has been a driving force for Lawan’s Presidential aspiration.

CBN Issues Strict Guidelines For New Cash Centres

Apex Bank Raises Online Transfer To N250m

The Godwin Emefiele-led Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN has issued guidelines for setting up Bank Neutral Cash Hubs, BNCHs also known as cash centres. The apex bank had in March this year introduced BNCHs to reduce cost and improve operational efficiency in the country’s cash management system.

The CBN said on Thursday that the guidelines will provide the apex bank effective capacity to manage the operations of BNCHs.

The major point of the guidelines is that only Deposit Money Banks, DMBs, and Cash Processing Companies, CPCs, are eligible to apply for licenses for BNCHs.

The CBN also prohibits BNCHs from investing or lending activities such as receiving, disbursing or engaging   in any transaction involving foreign currency.

According to the guidelines, “BNCHs are cash collection centers to be established by registered (licensed) processing companies or Deposit Money Banks, DMBs, based on business needs.

“They will be located in areas with high volumes of commercial activities and cash transactions. The hubs will provide a platform for customers to make cash deposits and receive value irrespective of the bank with which their account is domiciled.

“The key objective of setting up Bank Neutral Cash Hubs, BNCH, is to reduce the risks and cost borne by banks, merchants and huge cash handlers in the course of cash management activities; deepen financial inclusion, and leverage on shared services to enhance cash management efficiency.”

“A BNCH may carry out the following: Receipt of Naira denominated deposits on behalf of financial institutions from individuals and businesses with high volumes of cash; disbursement of Naira denominated withdrawals on behalf of financial institutions to individuals and businesses with high volumes of cash.; and any other activities that may be permitted by the CBN.

The CBN, has therefore, urged those interested in setting up BNCHs to “submit a formal application to the Director, Currency Operations Department, COD, requesting to be granted approval to operate a BNCH, which shall be processed in two stages, namely: Approval-in-Principle, AIP, and Final Approval.

“Note that a formal application for approval shall be made for every new BNCH site to be set up,” the bank said in the guidelines.

Such promoters, the apex bank said are requested to apply in writing to the Director, Currency Operations Department, COD.

Meanwhile, the CBN has raised the limit for ‘Highly Secured Online Funds Transfer from N100 million to N250 million for Companies and from N10 million to N25 million for individuals. What this means is that customers could transfer as much as N250 million and N25 million, for corporate and individual, respectively from their various online transactions.

This was disclosed in a circular, signed by Musa I. Jimoh, Director, Payments System Management Department yesterday.

OPINION: Why Osinbajo Is Nigeria’s Best Bet

0
Osinbajo Declares

By Dan Abubakar

After the dollar  bazaar that marked the PDP’s convention last weekend featuring two deeply flawed candidates in contention for the party’s presidential nomination ( the other contestants are forgettable), attention shifts this weekend to the APC’s own version of this parody of a democracy.

After Peter Obi took himself out of serious contention by leaving the PDP ( and no serious analyst will give him any  chance of a credible showing through his Labour Party platform), that party was confronted with presenting rather unexciting  options in a largely horrific slate of candidates. And it is a statement of how unabashed is the pretense of democracy that votes were openly bought with a deluge of cash (dollars, for goodness sake). Where was the EFCC? Where was the ICPC? Where was the Police? Where is the moral outrage? Where are the proselytizers revulsed by what has become the nation’s savage soul?

The moral and political degeneration is simply astounding precisely because it is now widely accepted, at least in political circles, that this is the way things are and should be done.

The hope may be forlorn but APC has the opportunity to truly surprise us by doing something different and give us hope that this country – even our democracy – can yet be salvaged. That party – to be sure-  has a most unedifying image among Nigerians – such has been its record in office. This is why the opposing party is predicating its campaign strategy on pitting its presidential candidate against the record of the APC.

A smart strategy, on the face of it. But even a cursory examination will show that it cannot fly. In the first instance, political parties today are meaningless and indistinguishable one from the other. They are mere, disposable vehicles for achieving personal ambitions, for rent-seeking and profiteering in public office. With the fluidity in their ranks and the largely atrocious performance of those who lay claim to their membership who can tell the difference between the parties?

Thus the more sensible yardstick is the antecedents of individuals and their past record of public service.

To decide on who will best meet the critical demands of leadership requires an honest and agonizing appraisal of the state of the nation today. Not the self-serving and specious yardstick of alleged regional loyalties to justify a ‘northern’ presidential candidate like the dour and uninspiring Ahmed Lawan, president of an effete and largely worthless Senate to take on the PDP’s Atiku Abubakar. Where were the purveyors of this argument when M.K.O. Abiola despatched Bahir Tofa even in his Kano constituency in the June 12 1993 elections? Or when the same heavily-baggaged  Atiku Abubakar was trounced by Goodluck Jonathan at the PDP’s presidential primaries for the 2011 elections?

If our politicians – and electors – are still capable of enlightened self-interest, they should recognise the dire state of the country and which counsels a rejection of the business as usual approach enamoured by vested interests. It is time that we all stand up and be counted.

Our situation bears restating.

There has been a collapse of everything – morals, institutions and systems. Describing ours  as a state of dire emergency almost trivializes it. We are in mortal danger.

It requires that the country  be rebuilt brick by brick and with the best hands at the helm at all levels. It is a daunting task that demands a certain degree of ruthlessness but not vindictiveness to execute. Ruthlessness in  applying the law, in calling public officers past and present to account, in rebuilding institutions especially those of law and order and the machinery of justice.

It requires  a highly literate mind, one not motivated by the pursuit of primitive accumulation, primordial comforts and greed. It calls for  a personality who has experienced our failures at close quarters and is in a position to courageously tackle them from day one. It requires a personality  imbued with the wisdom and foresight to take on vested interests while inspiring and galvanizing the millions of youth who have about given up on this country. It requires someone who recognises and is prepared to correct the structural deformities of the country, who appreciates its heterogenous complexities and can deal with all sides fairly and equitably. It requires a personality who recognises the extremely fraught state of national unity and will take on the urgent task of repairs by restoring  equity, a sense of balance and fairness to all component parts.

It requires someone with a sense of mission who can give the country hope again and, because of all the foregoing and his sense of decency, rekindle respect for the country abroad and drawing upon the resulting goodwill to launch the country back to the path of growth and development.

By most accounts, best positioned to superintend a new beginning for the country is the current vice president, Prof Yemi Osinbajo. It will be in the enlightened self-interest of members of the APC to forsake the dollar spectacle displayed last week by the PDP and put their faith in the country by ensuring that he prevails at their party’s convention beginning this weekend.
