El-Rufai Says APC Will Crumble If Tinubu Is Denied Presidential Ticket

0

By Gideon Njoku

Bashir El-Rufai, a son of the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, says that the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, will crumble  if Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, a Presidential aspirant, fails to get the ticket as the Party’s candidate.

This comes as Tinubu’s aspiration suddenly came under threat three days to the Presidential Primaries.

Tinubu, otherwise, a frontline runner, talked himself into controversy in Abeokuta, Ogun State where he went to woo delegates.

Addressing them, he launched unprovoked tirade against President Muhammadu Buhari perceived to be derogatory. He also did the same to both Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the host Governor, Dapo Abiodun.

According to Tinubu, he made the three of them what they are today. For effect, he reminded his audience that Buhari had contested three times and failed three times.

The statement outraged not a few people, especially in the North.

Tinubu’s staunch supporter, Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, angrily took Tinubu up, and dismissed his claims as “bullshit.”

In two separate statements within 24 hours, one from his Campaign Organisation, and the other signed personally by him, Tinubu has embarked on damage control. He said his utterances were misunderstood and misinterpreted because he spoke in Yoruba language. He blamed mischief makers, and pledged his unalloyed loyalty to the President, as well as deep respect for both him and the office he occupies.

Yet, there are fears in Tinubu’s camp that the damage control has not doused the tension caused in Abeokuta and may affect Tinubu’s chances during the Primaries.

But El-Rufai jnr who has acquired his father’s appetite for controversy, has warned of the consequences of denying Tinubu the ticket.

In a post, he said it would scatter the APC as a Party.

His words: “If this man doesn’t get this ticket, this “party” as we know it immediately ceases to exist as a single entity.”

In the past couple of weeks, the rumour has been strong that Tinubu could defect to the Social Democratic Party, SDP,  if he fails to clinch the APC Presidential ticket. His camp denies it.

The APC Presidential primaries will take place in Abuja between Monday, June 6 and Tuesday, June 7.

Ekweremadu, Rejected By APC, May Head Back To Senate Under PDP

0
Ike Ekweremadu

By Uche Mbah

Not a few people were shocked when the State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Enugu State Chapter, Chief Agballa, revealed that former Deputy Senate Ike Ekweremadu, made a bid to join the Party, but was rejected.  He said Ekweremadu was rejected because even before he was admitted to the party, he was already asking for the Governorship ticket.

Agballa dismissed Ekweremadu as greedy, and in a most disrespectful manner, threatened to slap him if he ever came to the APC to ask for accommodation. A subsequent visit to the APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, in company with Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, did not yield much fruits.

The shock stemmed from the fact that having been a strong member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, since 1999, and occupied a number of positions, including a two-term occupier of the office of Deputy Senate President, nobody expected him to dump the party just because he was not given the Governorship ticket.

However, now, having realised that “East or West, North or South”, home is the best,  Senator Ekweremadu has made a u-turn back to the PDP.

With his return, he appears set to return to the red chamber after hovering about in political limbo.

Ekweremadu was schemed out from the Peoples Democratic Party Primaries through, according to him, an alleged manipulation of delegates’ list. It was alleged that his former boss, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, teamed up with Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and Senator Jim Nwobodo to draw a delegates’ list  said to be inimical to Ekweremadu’s political interest.

To avoid humiliation at the polls, he pulled out of the Party, and consequently the PDP Governorship primaries.

He then  began  running from pillar to post trying to find a new platform to realize his ambition. He was rumored to have approached the Labor party for consideration, but his spokesperson, Uche Anichukwu, debunked the allegation. He said there was no truth in the rumor.

But reports indicate he was not accepted since “Labour has their candidates already, who will not step down for Ekweremadu”.

Unconfirmed sources said he made a full return to the PDP in the hope that he could be considered for the position of the running mate to Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, a position he, also, yearned for in 2019 but failed. It was given to Peter Obi, a two-term Anambra Governor, and now a Presidential candidate under the  Labour Party.

But it appears he has lost lost as his name has not featured on the list of those under consideration.

Another opportunity has presented itself to him with the cancellation of the PDP Senatorial Primaries in Enugu West which is likely to pave way for his return to the Senate.

The PDP, in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said  the Party has  cancelled  the Enugu West PDP Senatorial primary election.

The statement said in part:

“Furthermore, Kaduna Central Senatorial District of Kaduna State, Enugu West Senatorial Districts of Enugu State as well as Boki/Ikom Federal Constituency and Yakuur II State Constituency, both of Cross River State earlier scheduled for Saturday June 4, 2022 have been cancelled.

“All Party members in the affected States should please take note.”

With this, Ekweremadu may return to the Senate since the candidate who won the PDP primaries was allegedly sponsored by him.

The questions, however, are: Did he purchase the Senatorial form or will the PDP give him a waver? And, how does that seat with the Independent National Electoral Commission which had already approved and published the names of candidates for Senatorial Primaries? Will Ekweremadu be accommodated?

Aftermath Of Ogun State Tirade: Tinubu Bows; Pledges Loyalty To Buhari; Calls Him A Patriot

Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abeokuta

By Adesina Soyooye

For the second time in less than 24 hours, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Presidential aspirant under the All Progressives Congress, APC, has reached out to President Muhammadu Buhari to pledge his loyalty and make amends for the inexplicable tirade he launched on the President.

Two Press Statements has been issued for damage control, and to appease especially, Buhari’s supporters and loyalists who are outraged by Tinubu’s utterances.

In what has been described as signs of frustration and desperation, Tinubu descended on Buhari during his visit to Ogun State to hunt for delegates.

Addressing the delegates, Tinubu told them how, if not for him, Buhari would not have become the President. He said he was instrumental  to the 2015 victory of Buhari. For good measure, he reminded them that the President had contested three times and failed. He also reminded them that Buhari had said on National Television that he was through with contesting for the Presidential seat, until he intervened.

He also said Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Ogun State Governor were his products.  But for him, he said, just like in Buhari’s case, they won’t be occupying their present positions.

Tinubu: “If not me that led the war front, Buhari wouldn’t have emerged. He contested first, second and third time, but lost. He even said on television that he won’t contest again.

“But I went to his home in Katsina. I told him you would contest and win … This time, it is Yoruba turn and in Yoruba land, it’s my tenure.”

But Tinubu’s outburst has  caused an uproar, and has outraged not a few people, especially, in the North.

A die-hard Tinubu supporter and  former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, was so outraged that he dismissed Tinubu’s Outburst as “bullshit.” For the records, Lawal was one of those who purchased the Presidential Forms for Tinubu and was present to submit them on  completion.

In a statement, on Friday, an angry Lawal said:

“Sometimes it is very difficult to support a Yoruba person in national politics if you are not one. They have a way of making you regret your support because they eventually make you seem like a traitor to your own people. Now all these comments about Bola’s Yoruba presidency and his support of Buhari without which Buhari would not have been president is bullshit.”

Realising the damage that has been done, the Tinubu Campaign Organisation, in a statement issued on Friday, signed by  Bayo Onanuga, said  Tinubu’s speech has been misinterpreted for mischief purposes.

“Tinubu’s speech in Abeokuta did not demonstrate any disrespect to President Buhari, for whom he has very high regard, and whose re-election campaign he chaired in 2019.

Seeing that the statement appeared nobody, Tinubu, in a second statement which he personally signed, pledged his unalloyed loyalty to Buhari. He noted that it was unthinkable that he would denigrate the leader of the party he is aspiring to be the next flag bearer.

Tinubu: “It makes no sense at all to do such an indelicate, unseemly thing.

“Let me also erase any doubt. My respect and regard for President Buhari as Commander-in-Chief of this nation and as a person are high and unfailing. I shall never denigrate him. I certainly did not do so in Abeokuta.”

Following is the full text of Tinubu’s statement titled: “I HAVE HIGH REGARD AND RESPECT FOR PRESIDENT BUHARI”

“We have entered the meat of primary season. Sensationalism and wilful inaccuracy tend to push aside truth during such moments. I make this statement so that truth and accuracy may have a chance. It is important that people truly know what I said and where I stand.

“Whatever view you have of me is within your right to make. But let it be based on truth and not on falsehood or reckless exaggeration.

There have been gross misinterpretations in some sections of the media regarding comments I made on Thursday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. To a degree, the erroneous interpretations may be somewhat innocent given that I spoke in Yoruba.

“Those who do not understand the nuances of this richly layered and subtle language may have inadvertently yet erroneously missed the true meaning of what I said while attempting to translate my statement. Instead of weighing what I said carefully, they translated so quickly and thus inaccurately in an attempt to meet media deadlines. Of course, there are also those who knew better but they conveyed these inaccuracies because the sensationalism suits their political purposes.

“Again, such propaganda and misinformation becomes daily fare in the heat of the political season. Let’s just state what needs to be stated. My opponents want to present a narrative that I made comments disrespectful of President Muhammadu Buhari in hopes that such a narrative would convince President Buhari to oppose my aspirations regarding the approaching primary. President Buhari is an experienced and accomplished leader.

“I do not believe he will be taken by the tricks of such people.

“Let me also erase any doubt. My respect and regard for President Buhari as Commander-in-Chief of this nation and as a person are high and unfailing. I shall never denigrate him. I certainly did not do so in Abeokuta. We have been political partners for a long time and I hope that partnership continues well into the future. I would do nothing to jeopardize it. I believe our party is the best hope for the nation to right itself.

“I believe I have a future role larger than the one I now have.  I also believe President Buhari has a continuing and important role to play even after his tenure as president is over.

Indeed, I consistently supported the president and his administration. Even when the administration has come under intense criticism, my feet have always been planted solidly in defence of the president.

“The President personally nominated me to coordinate his re-election campaign in 2019. He did this not because I opposed him or because I was indifferent. He did so, because I was firmly with him in 2015 and has stood firmly beside him ever since. When I publicly announced my aspiration to seek the party nomination for the upcoming presidential election, I stressed that my strategic objective was to build on the foundation laid by the Buhari administration.

“In fact, I believe I was the first aspirant to inform President Buhari of his presidential intention. It was a sign of the respect I have for him and his office. It is unthinkable that I would asperse the leader of the party for which I hope to be the next flag bearer. It makes no sense at all to do such an indelicate, unseemly thing.”

The APC Presidential Primaries will hold between June 6 and June 7.

The Party leadership is pushing for a consensus candidate. But according to the Chairman of the Screening Committee, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, all but one aspirant agreed to do that.

There is no price for correctly guessing who the aspirant is. Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

APC Presidential Screening: Every Single Aspirant That Came Qualified – Oyegun

0

By John Odigie Oyegun.

It is our pleasure to be here with you today to present our reports. I will be very brief.

Having been a tenant in this building before, Mr chairman, I came in I thought I was in the wrong premises. I want to say you have performed something short of a miracle in this building. And I can thread properly now that I am in the secretariat of the governing party.

I thank you for the assignment that you gave us an enormous and how short time has been. I know the environment on which you took over. And so, we are quite happy to do as much as we could to make the work of the party lighter.

We had the privilege of being inaugurated by you. Precisely on the 30 of May and we immediately started work that very day after a brief meeting. I will just summarize the main thing.

First, we had 23 member aspirants that we interacted with. And my first comment is that we were very inoccupant. Those were 23 that presented themselves. We had alot of others, prominent Nigerians both within and outside the country that had applied but for whatever reason, could not proceed with their applications.

The point I want to make is the quality of the people that wants to govern this country.

The second point I want to make is that, we were surprised at the active participation of the youthful members of the party. Some of whom really surprised us at to what they have accomplished in life, their understanding of the situation in this country and why they want to have the privilege of governing this country. What was important was that they so believed in the country and the party that they were able to pay the sum that some of us considered princely handsome to participate in the process. And I think the party ought to path itself in the back for them.

Our report is basically simple and short. I don’t want to beat about the bush. There were two aspects to it.

The basic constitutional qualifications for you to aspire to be a president of the federal Republic of Nigeria. That was simple and straight forward.

And on that basis, every single aspirants that presented himself qualified. Because it was basic and simple. But we are a governing party. And we are keen on continuing the process and replacing at the proper time with our president with yet another member of the party.

So, the ability to lead, background, experience and your understanding of the Nigerian situation, your ideas as to how issues, difficulties and problems can be addressed and how the country can be moved forward became a critical consideration. It is on that basis who are you, what have you achieved, your understanding of the nation and things you can contribute to move the nation forward. It was on the basis of that we made our final shortlist. I don’t list the names. I think I will leave that to you. We have a shortlist which brought the number down to 13. We could have cut it a little shorter. But we wanted a pedigree with a longer element to surface. For them to be seen whether to be noticed, who knows? We hand them over to the party. And it is for the party to decide who their preferred candidate will be.

It is also an opportunity to showcase the kind of people that exist within the party with their usefulness and kind of experience. Let the world know that this is a party that cares for the young and a party when we say the young can aspire, we really mean it. And this has been showcase in the report that we have written.

I will conclude by saying that we only drew a word of caution. That there is this cleavage that I gradually becoming the Centre stage in a national discourse. As between the north and the south and the presidency. And we just want to advise strongly that the party should please think of it in making its decision, address it and let it influence their thoughts because it has its own implications.

Outside that, just on behalf of the wonderful colleagues you gave me to work with. I want to thank you very much. It was a sensitive assignment, a challenging assignment but very interesting assignment on which all of us have profited immensely from which the party will also profit.

Against every aspirants, the issue of consensus and it is pleasant surprise that 98 to 99% agreed that the party is supreme. And that whatever the party finally decides with proper consultation, they will likely to accept. We had only one exception who said yes, he will accept consensus so long as it is build on him. So, I think it is a point that needs to be made and emphasize. So, that gives you a lot of leeway in the days and hours ahead to trim down even more drastically. But, finally we think you should not be afraid for a contested primary if anybody insist on the contest.

I thank you very much Mr chairman. It is now my honor and privilege on behalf of the committee set up to present to you the report.

Thank you.

2023: Tinubu Claims Outburst In Ogun State Against Buhari Misinterpreted; Insists He Is The Man To Beat

0
Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abeokuta

By Akinwale Kasali

Under pressure and taken aback by reactions which followed his address to delegates in Ogun State, frontline Presidential aspirant under the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, says that what he told the delegates in Ogun State has been misinterpreted.

Tinubu had told the delegates that but for him, President Muhammadu Buhari wouldn’t have become the President. He also told them how  Buhari failed three times, and on National Television, swore he would never contest again.

But not a few people have condemned Tinubu’s address where he also claimed he unstalled both Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun.

Tinubu’s loyal friend and staunch supporter, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, slammed him for denigrating Buhari.

He also scolded Tinubu for claiming he alone installed Buhari, emphasising that it was the handiwork of many people across the country who, unlike Tinubu are not bragging about it. He dismissed Tinubu’s claims as “bullshit.”

But a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, on behalf of  Tinubu’s Campaign Organisation,  said “The campaign was surprised at the way the opposition and Tinubu’s traders had turned his statement to give an interpretation Tinubu did not mean, and did not say.”

On why Tinubu made the statement, the campaign office said it was ” In his effort to convince the party delegates to vote for him at the primaries, he went memory lane to provide specific instances when he brought his political clout and strategic skills to assist individuals, groups and tendencies in the party to gain political power”

In any case, the statement noted that what Tinubu said were not not new, and were already in the public domain.

“These factual references are already in the public realm. They have been reported and analysed in the media in the last eight years. They are therefore, matters of public knowledge”, the statement said.

The Statement reads:

APC PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARIES: ERRONEOUS INTERPRETATION OF ASIWAJU’S PLEAS FOR LEVEL PLAYING FIELD

“The attention of the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Presidential Campaign Organisation has been drawn to the erroneous, misleading and mischievous interpretation of his  address in Abeokuta, capital of Ogun State on Thursday.

“It is on record that the leading presidential aspirant in the forthcoming primaries of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressed the national delegates of the party in Ogun State , with  Governor Mr.Dapo Abiodun in attendance.

“In his effort to convince the party delegates to vote for him at the primaries, he went down memory lane to provide specific instances when he brought his political clout and strategic skills to assist individuals, groups and tendencies in the party to gain political power.

“These factual references are already in the public realm.

“They have been reported and analysed in the media in the last eight years.

“They are therefore, matters of public knowledge.

“While we recognise that recent unexpected interventions in the time table and the heat generated by the proximity of the event might have led to some anxiety, this campaign organisation believes that the main thrust of Asiwaju’s presentation, was that his huge contributions to the formation  and electoral success of the All Progressives Congress should count in his favour as a true party man who desires to be the flag bearer.

“There is also no doubt that the fresh conditions proposed by President Muhammadu Buhari  for the consideration of a presidential candidate of the party  made it necessary for Asiwaju to labour to convince the delegates that he fits the bill.

“The campaign was surprised at the way the opposition and Tinubu’s traducers had  turned his statement to give an interpretation Tinubu did not mean and did not say.

“At no time did Tinubu play any ethnic card or denigrate any ethnic  group.   That is surely out of his character, as Engineer David Babachir Lawal, attested  in his viral whatsApp statement.

“Tinubu’s speech in Abeokuta did not demonstrate any disrespect to President Buhari, for whom he has a very high regard, and whose re-election campaign he chaired in 2019.

“Since the video of the speech he delivered in Yoruba hit the social media, varied interpretations have been given to the speech, which in the main was about Governor Abiodun, who in the true tradition of Yoruba culture bowed to his leader after Tinubu’s short speech.

“The Tinubu campaign is not surprised why the opposition in the APC has decided to turn and twist the statement.

“The former Lagos governor, a great party man remains the man to beat at the party’s convention on Monday.

“We are least surprised that he is the target of well-calculated and most unkind virulent attacks

“The campaign organisation hereby appeals to the media to avoid over- sensationalising issues of facts and play its constitutional role of informing the electorate to make informed choices at the presidential primaries.”

Ekiti, Osun Gov Election: INEC Prepared; Releases Code Of Conduct For Officials

0

By Ayodele Oni

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released regulations and guidelines for its officials ahead next year’s general election.

Among the guidelines, released on Friday is banning use of handsets while collation of election results is ongoing.

INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, pointed out that with the presentation of the Regulations and Guidelines, the Commission has concluded formal preparations for the 2023 polls.

He said this is the first time the Commission is releasing the guidelines, nine months to the general elections.

The document was presented during the meeting of Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) at the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja.

“With the coming into force of the Electoral Act 2022, it has become necessary to review the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines to govern the conduct of elections.

“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022 and the Regulations and Guidelines constitute the electoral legal framework.

“On several occasions, the Commission has assured Nigerians that we are finalizing the Regulations and Guidelines for the elections.

“I am glad to announce that the document is ready and will be presented to Nigerians shortly. The soft copy will be uploaded to our website with the link shared on our social media platforms.

“With the release of the Regulations and Guidelines today, and the publication of the Strategic Plan (SP) 2022-2026 and Election Project Plan 2023 earlier, the Commission has virtually concluded the planning processes for the 2023 General Election nine months ahead of the election.

“In the next couple of weeks, the training manual will also be presented to Nigerians.

“Going forward, the Commission will focus on election administration: logistics, training, voter education, technology, sensitization against vote buying, inclusivity measures and, above all, security.”

On the Ekiti governorship election, Yakubu said that all major things needed for the election have been put in place.

“With only 15 days to the Ekiti governorship election, all the major activities that are supposed to be carried out at this stage have been successfully undertaken.

“I led a team of INEC National Commissioners to Ekiti State early this week to assess the Commission’s preparations for the elections.

“We visited our offices in several Local Government Areas, held meetings with our staff, had audience with the Council of Obas to solicit the support of their Royal Majesties for peaceful elections and met with the security agencies.

“We also observed the ongoing training of ad hoc staff and the deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for mock accreditation of voters in some Polling Units across the three Senatorial Districts of the State.

“We will again return to Ekiti State shortly to meet with the stakeholders and for the signing of the Peace Accord by political parties and candidates under the auspices of the National Peace Committee.

“As the Commission is getting ready for the Ekiti State Governorship election, we have also gone far with similar preparations for the Osun State Governorship election holding next month i.e. Saturday 16th July 2022. At the same time, the Commission continues with preparations for the 2023 General Election.”

2023: Tinubu’s Aspiration In Trouble; Babachir Lawal Slams Him For Ridiculing Buhari; Says North Very Angry Over It

0
Babachir Lawal

By Gideon Njoku

“Tinubu’s boast of installing Buhari is bullsh.t – Babachir Lawal

The Presidential aspiration of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is in trouble. Tinubu has talked himself into a self-destructive position. And, he is losing his supporters in the North.

One of them is his die-hard loyalist, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.

In a statement he released on Friday, Lawal slammed Tinubu for ridiculing President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday in Ogun State.

Speaking while he was in Ogun State to Presidential delegates to the Presidential Primaries of the All Progressives Congress, Tinubu said that without him, Buhari wouldn’t have been President. He noted how Buhari failed three times, and said on National Television that he was no longer running, and reminded that it was him who convinced Buhari, and made him President.

Tinubu had said: “If not me that led the war front, Buhari would not have emerged. He contested first, second and third times, but lost. He even said on television that he would not contest again.

“But I went to his home in Katsina, I told him you would contest and win, but ‘you would not joke with Yoruba matters.

“Since he has emerged, I have not been appointed minister. I didn’t get a contract.

“This time, it’s the Yoruba’s turn and in Yorubaland, it’s my tenure.”

But Lawal has faulted Tinubu’s claims and dismissed it as “buckshit”. Hev told Tinubu that Buhari’s ascendancy was a combination of the efforts of many people across the country, and not Tinubu’s exclusive. He wondered why Tinubu should boast about a project that was not his alone and take credit for it.

He said Tinubu’s public denigration of Buhari has sparked anger in the North. He also decried the seeming “Yorubanisation” of Tinubu’s aspiration and said  it makes those of them supporting him look like traitors.

Lawal: “Sometimes, it is very difficult to support a Yoruba person in National politics. They have a way of making you regret your support because they eventually make you seem like a traitor to your own people.”

Lawal’s strongly worded State reads in part:

“Sometimes it is very difficult to support a Yoruba person in national politics if you are not one.

“They have a way of making you regret your support because they eventually make you seem like a traitor to your own people.

“Now, all these comments about Bola’s Yoruba presidency and his support of Buhari without which Buhari would not have been president is bulshit.

“He wasn’t the only one whose support made a difference. There were many others from all around the country and they are not bragging about it.

“You may wish to know that all of us Buhari supporters are shocked and pissed off by Bola’s speech on this occasion. It is unlike him.

“And this speech is massively trending in the North and being given a negative connotation as you can well imagine. I first read it this morning on an Adamawa group platform and the anger is palpable and all round.

“You would think Yorubas will resist the temptation of joining in the northerners-bashing game at this very critical time – the primary election is only three days away. It is unfortunate that Bola himself chose to join in this bashing game – choosing to speak in the Yoruba language and in Yoruba land  in a manner that seems to denigrate Buhari. I could vividly imagine the discomfort of all the northerners sitting beside him on that podium.

“This appears to be the Abiola saga being replayed. Abiola won the election with majority Northern votes but they took the brunt of the post-election protests that followed.

“Just survey all the people that are doing more meaningful practical things to enthroned Bola as president and you will find that almost all are northerners while his kinsmen engage themselves social media activism and Northern bashing.

“When Yorubas vilify the North like this, our sense of fear and insecurity under a Yoruba presidency gets heightened and in the end, pushes us to  rethink  our support for not only Bola but any Yoruba as president for that matter.”

Protesting Varsity Unions March Pro-Chancellor Out Of Council Meeting

Bamidele Olumilua University of Education

By Ayodele Oni

Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, (BOUEST)Ikere-Ekiti,  has  clarified reasons for the invasion of its Council meeting by protesting union leaders on Thursday.

The University, in a statement on Friday, explained that no State Government official was within the institution’s campus during the protest.

The statement, signed by the spokesman, Temitope Akinbisoye reads:

“The attention of Bamidele Olumilua University has been drawn to a malicious news report trending on social media that the Secretary to the State Government, Ekiti State Accountant General, the Chief of Staff to the State Governor and the University Pro-Chancellor were humiliated on Thursday, June 2, 2022 by members of staff of the University for allegedly spreading the gospel of continuity.

“The University considers it as mean and cowardly for the dark forces of disinformation to toe the inglorious path of spreading deliberate falsehoods and illogical surmises just to deceive the public and apparently, to score cheap political points.

“For the purpose of emphasis and situating things in correct  perspectives: The statutory meeting of the University Governing Council was scheduled for Thursday, June 2, 2022.

‘While the meeting was in progress, members of staff under the three (3) trade unions (ASUU, SSANU and NASU), rose from their emergency meetings and jointly staged a protest to the Academic Building (venue of the Governing Council meeting) to express grievances on sundry issues including regrading and  promotion matters.

“The leaders of the three (3) trade unions sought audience with the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Chief Afolabi Ojuawo and it was granted.

“While expressing their grievances on the promotion exercise and other matters ancillary thereto, the  Union leaders, in no-holds-barred manner, commended the Ekiti State Governor and Visitor to the University, Dr. Kayode Fayemi for his vested interest in and love for the institution right from his first term in office. How the gratitude suddenly became condemnation for Governor Fayemi in the ears of the pathological liars is still a mystery.

“The Ekiti State Accountant General and the Chief of Staff to the Governor are not members of the Governing Council neither were they sighted anywhere on the University campus on that fateful day.

“The Secretary to the State Government, who is a member of the Governing Council, did not  attend the meeting in person due to an overriding official engagement.

“Statute 5(1) of the first schedule of the law establishing the University clearly states the composition of the University Governing Council and duo of the Accountant General and the Chief of Staff are not members.

“The grievances of the workers could not be immediately resolved at the meeting of the Governing Council and the atmosphere became tensed amidst chanting of solidarity songs and insistence on having an axe to grind with the Pro-Chancellor.

“The Union leaders requested the Pro-Chancellor to take his leave to prevent the situation from further escalating.

“The malicious news that some State Government officials came to preach continuity agenda is not only laughable but an horrendous lie cleverly woven by some self-serving political jobbers seeking to drag any willing and gullible mind into the  barren land of petty strifes and fruitless controversies under the guise of political grandstanding.

“The University authorities hereby appeal to the general public to disregard the horrible falsehood and the peddlers.  The University campus is calm and normal academic activities are on-going  without let or hindrance.”

Governor Abiodun Hits Back At Tinubu, Calls Him Emperor

The Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has decently hit back at former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, over what has been interpreted as a public humiliation of the Governor by Tinubu.

On a visit to Ogun State on Thursday, June 2, to hunt for delegates, Tinubu, a Presidential aspirant, in what looked and sounded like signs of desperation and frustration that the plum ticket could slip out of his hands, descended on President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and his host, Governor Abiodun.

Speaking to the delegates in Yoruba, Tinubu said he made the three men. Without him, he said, Buhari  wouldn’t have been the President. He reminded them of Buhari’s failures. He told them that that Buhari had failed three times, wept on National Television, and said he would never contest for the office of the President again. He said it took him to convince Buhari to contest, and that he was the one who installed him.

Taking on Osinbajo, he told his audience that he was the one who hand-picked him, and gave him to Buhari as his running mate. He said initially, Buhari had asked him, Tinubu, to run with him, but that the plan was scuttled by former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, who was against a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

Turning to Abiodun, he noted that he, Tinubu, had been serving the Yoruba in the past 25 years, and

then noted: “This one sitting here”, you couldn’t have been Governor  without me. He reminded the Governor of what happened on the day of the Primaries, how Abiodun’s posters were being pulled down.

Finally, he said it is the turn of the Yoruba to be President, but that turn remains his sole turn.

On Friday, Abiodun who sat through the humiliation, reacted to Tinubu. He decently, and indirectly called Tinubu an Emperor without mentioning Tinubu’s  name. He also noted that Ogun State is not a family enterprise but a public one.

Abiodun in a post: “I am not an Emperor by any chance and this is not my family inheritance. I am holding this position in trust for all the people of the State, and I have vowed to be fair, just and equitable and this is the solemn agreement  I made between the Almighty God and myself.”

Abiodun and Ogun State delegates had earlier pledged their votes to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, an Ogun State indigene, and a Presidential aspirant.
