OPINION: Kwankwaso is Unfit To Be Nigeria’s President

0

By Ocherome Nnanna

“Is it not Northern leaders like Kwankwaso who are behind the influx of armed militants from the Sahel (Northern Nigeria and beyond) who are occupying forests in the South and Middle Belt, killing people, destroying farms, kidnapping for ransom and now reportedly poised for a “war of conquest” of indigenes people?”

When Rabiu Kwankwaso came on Channels TV last Sunday, curious Nigerians expected him to “show himself”. Oh, how he did! What else did he have to offer beyond sharing red and white caps, strutting like an overdressed cockatoo with bellhops bowing and scraping to him before he boards a car, and propagating Arewa irredentism?

Being an engineer, PhD holder, Minister, Governor and Senator, Kwankwaso packs an enviable pedigree that qualifies him in terms of academics and experience to vie for president. But, it takes more than paper certificates and experience to make a good president. Also, one can come with the wrong kind of experience.

No one who has continuously been in political offices since 1999, growing wealthier by the day and without any track record of private sector experience, can fit into the picture of the leader we need in Aso Villa in 2003. These are treasury looters.

Nigeria does not need that sort of “experience” at this time.

We expected Kwankwaso to seize the golden opportunity to tell Nigerians what he had to offer as solutions to the failed situation of the Nigerian state. I expected substance, deep insights, vision, knowledge, wisdom, direction and atoms of patriotism. I expected him to show he is better than Buhari in ability to unite the country, restore the economy, rebuild our educational system, end insecurity and terrorism and give every section a sense of belonging.

Honestly, I was shocked to see that Kwankwaso is fatuous – empty! He could not raise the narrative from the gutter level of a cart pusher in Kofar Wabe Market in Kano. He was an insult to his PhD certificate. He only showed he is running for president with the wrong “experience”. Such a fellow should never be found near Aso Villa as president. His regional, religious and ethnic adventurism will make Nigeria “miss” even Buhari!

Let us look at the substance of Kwankwaso’s 30 minutes of “fame” on Channels Television last Sunday.

He said that “people” are not comfortable with “what is happening” in the South East and would not vote for someone from there. Let me ask: which “people”? Why was Kwankwaso too cowardly to say “Northerners”? Since 1999, the South East has voted for a president from the South West, Kwankwaso’s North West and South-South.

Apart from pure hatred as propagated by Kwankwaso, what reason would “people” have not to reciprocate the South East’s patriotic gestures now that it is their turn? Awon l’okan! The rotation machine gets to the doorstep of the South East and sudden screeches to a halt. And intending “president” Kwankwaso is celebrating that!

Second question. What is “happening” in the South East? Insecurity? Where did Kwankwaso obtain the temerity to talk about insecurity in the South East with the Boko Harm, ISWAP, Bandit and Fulani herdsmen terrorism rocking the entire country, especially the North? Guess what, all the terrorists are Northern youth rebelling against an oppressive, incompetent and corrupt system where leaders like Kwankwaso manipulate ethnicity and religion to stay in power.

Northern misrule created these monsters.

The Northern elite and politicians like Kwankwaso have been in charge of security, Army, Police and others since the rise of Boko Haram jihadism in 2009. Thousands of lives and trillions of naira have gone down, yet the Northern politicians cannot even protect their own people. Where is the justification for another Northern president in 2023 after Buhari?

What is “happening” in the South East, anyway? Biafra agitation, right? Who created the situations that led to Biafra I and II? Was it not the North? Where was Biafra II before Muhammadu Buhari’s emergence as president in 2015? Was the South East not the most peaceful zone in the country?

Is it not Northern leaders like Kwankwaso who are behind the influx of armed militants from the Sahel (Northern Nigeria and beyond) who are occupying forests in the South and Middle Belt, killing people, destroying farms, kidnapping for ransom and now reportedly poised for a “war of conquest” of indigenous people?

So, to Kwankwaso and his cohorts, it is “bad” for some youths in the South East to defend themselves and their land against Northern invaders? It is okay for Fulani militants to attack and occupy indigenous people’s lands? Just listen to a former Minister of Defence and a budding “president” talking!

Kwankwaso did not go to Channels Television to market himself. There is nothing to market. We already know him, anyway. The only time you see him pussyfooting around is when there is an ethnic conflict between Northerners and others, especially in the South. He does not go there to make peace. He goes to “defend the North”. This Kwankwaso should run for the president of the North. He has no pedigree as a national leader.

Kwankwaso is blindfolded by the perceived massive votes of Kano. But we are yet to see any evidence that the crowds vote for him. We saw mammoth crowds in Kano in 2019, but when the presidential result came in, Buhari and Gov. Umar Ganduje polled 1,464,768 (78.9%) while Atiku Abubakar and Kwankwaso only managed 391,593 (21.1%). Kwankwaso’s governorship candidate, Abba Kabir Yusuf, was comprehensively trounced by Ganduje. Kwankwaso only enjoys “audio” popularity. Where else in the North have his Kwankwasiyya supporters won anything?

Kwankwaso only came to Channels Television in panic mode and failed attempt and de-market Labour Party’s candidate, Peter Obi, after their merger talks collapsed on the former’s over-bloated ego. Every party or candidate is trying to diminish Obi’s wildfire rising profile. They are all looking for mud to sling, but Obi remains firmly above board and above all.

The collapse of the LP/NNPP talks was a great blessing to Obi.

Kwankwaso would have disappeared on him to greener pasture at the last moment, the same way he disappeared on Atiku in 2019.

Joshua Dariye and Jolly Nyamme

By Tosin Olatokunbo

Following the terrorists attack on Kuje minimum prison on Tuesday Night fear has mounted over the fate of former Govrnors Jolly Nyame and Joshua Dariye of Taraba and Plateau State, respectively.
Apart from the two ex-governor, the facility also houses Abba Kyari, the disgraced super cop and and former commander of the Inspector General of Police, Response Team, IRT, standing trial for fraud and drug trafficking.
The two former governor had recently been granted pardon by President Muhammadu Buhari, a development which put an end to their imprisonment for stealing billions of naira belonging to their various states. They were yet to be released before the attack late Tuesday night.
The Nigerian Police Force, NPF had on Wednesday claimed that 10 gun men attacked the facility around 10 pm yesterday. The fleeing terrorists had burned down a section of the facility and some vehicles, sources said.
Recall that the Nigerian Correctional Services, NCS had recently said the former governors remained in prison due to bureaucratic delay on the part of the government to perfect their release documents.
The terror attack has however raised serious questions on whether the two former governors have escaped the prison, alongside other inmates who fled the prison after the attack. No fewer than 300 criminals, Including terrorists and other hardened criminals in the facility were believed to have fled into nearby forests and communities.
The combined forces of DSS, Army and Airforce personnel, the magazine learnt have been directed to go after the escaped inmates after the Minster of Defence visited the correctional centre on Wednesday.
But sources told the again that the two former state helmsman did not escape. They have now been moved to a more secured part of the facility.
“The former governors are still in prison. In fact they did not leave there cell while the attack lasted. Due to the fact that they are high profile inmates, they have now been relocated to a safe corrie at the correctional centre, which I cannot disclosed for security reasons,” the source said.
President Buhari had on April 15 granted pardon to Nyame and Dariye citing I’ll health. The president decision came after the council of state presided by Buhari agreed to pardon them.
The decision to pardon the duo who were serving prison sectences very fraud has been greeted with condemnation from many Nigerians.
The former governors were among 159 inmates pardoned for various reasons.
Meanwhile, it has also been learnt that Kyari is still in the facility, and like the former governors have been moved to a more secure place in the prison. Kyari was in May ordered to be remanded in prison by Justice Emeka Nwite of the federal high court, after the judge turned down his bail application.

2023: Dokubo Says Obi Is Going Nowhere

By Tosin Olatokunbo

Asari Dokubo, the leader of Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force, Asari Dokubo, has described the Presidential ambition of Peter Obi as a scam. The former militant leader said the former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP is lying to Nigerians.
Obi has been gaining momentum in his 2023 presidential bid as a result of his flowery comments on national issues. Many consider him as a better alternative to other presidential candidates of the ruling APC and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The former governor appears to have gained more support mostly among the youths who have taken over the social media to campaign for him
But Dokubo said on his verified Facebook page that the LP presidential candidate does not stand any chance against two front line candidate of the PDP Atiku Abubakar and Bola Tinubu of the ruling APC. Obi “is going nowhere” in his presidential ambition, the repentant militant said.
According to him, “There is a scammer in town. Peter Obi is a scamming people with lies and people are believing him. This is nauseating. Peter Obi was a governor of Anambra state for eight years.
“Anambra State is one of the advantageous states in Nigeria because of the people. They have Onitsha, Awka, Nnewi. These are the biggest goldmines in Nigeria after Lagos, Port Harcourt and Aba.
“They said he saved seventy-something billion. What is seventy-something billion? The money that Wike toys with in Rivers.
“How would you compare Obi with Tinubu or Atiku? What is his antecedent? Lies. You are showing documents. Who showed that you rejected the lands? All these small small [sic] scams, who dem wan do naw [sic]?”
Recall that Dokubo who once said Nigeria will collapsed if former President Goodluck Jonathan did not return to office in 2015, recently praised Tinubu of the APC to high heavens, saying the former Governor of Lagos state is the most qualified among the presifential candidates to take over from Buhari next year.
His comment on Obi is, therefore considered by many as another way of demarketing the LP candidate in order to advance the course of Tinubu who Dokubo had abused in the past.

President Muhammadu Buhari tasted the anger of terrorists Tuesday when armed men opened fire on the advance security of the presidential convoy.
Barely few hours after, the terrorists also attacked and bombed Kuje medium prison in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
The daring terrorists brandishing high calibre weapons, were said to have released 300 inmates of the prison during the attack.

The president convoy was deployed ahead of his trip to Daura, Katsina state for Sallah celebrations.
In a statement, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said the armed men were repelled by a joint contingent of police, DSS and the Military.
The statement , titled, ‘Gallant Presidential guards repel attack on advance team ahead of President’s visit” read in part:“The Presidency has described as sad and unwelcome, the shooting incident near Dutsinma, Katsina State, at the convoy of cars carrying the Advance Team of security guards, protocol and media officers ahead of the President, Muhammadu Buhari’s trip to Daura for Sallah.

“The attackers opened fire on the convoy from ambush positions but were repelled by the military, police and DSS personnel accompanying the convoy.

“Two persons in the convoy are receiving treatment for the minor injuries they suffered. All the other personnel, staff and vehicles made it safely to Daura.”
Meanwhile, the terrorists that attached Kuje Prison were believed to had detonated a high calibre bomb at about 10:25pm followed by a second and third blasts as well as sporadic gunshots that threw residents into panic mode.

It was gathered that the Correctional Center had earlier received an intelligence report that one of its facilities would be under attack.
As at Tuesday morning, the magazine learnt that the Minister of Defense and all the service chiefs have gathered at the facility to have a first hand assessment of the attack.
“The minister has directed the security agencies to fish out the terrorists by sorounding the entire facility and adjoining areas. The belief is that the attackers could not have gone far since the attack happened in the night,” a source said on Wednesday.

Finally, Ekiti Varsity Recalls Sacked Workers After 3 Years

Ekiti State University to resume May 24

By Ayodele Oni

At last the management of Ekiti state University, (EKSU), has reinstated workers sacked three years ago from the institution.
With the development, the state owned ivory tower has finally bowed to months of pressure from the workers union.

The sacked workers that have started receiving their letters of reinstatement had their appointments terminated on the orders of the university’s governing council.

At the inception of Governor Kayode Fayemi’s administration, government set up a committee to look into the over-bloated wage bill of the institution, to the extent that the subvention could no longer cover the wage bill.

The committee found out that new workers were massively recruited into the university during the past administration of former Governor Ayodele Fayose and Prof Joseph Bandele as the vice chancellor.

The committee also discovered that some staff had overstayed and become almost redundant to the university.

The governing council thereafter approved a downsizing to enable the institution survived and continued with its programmes.

The Governor elect of the state, Biodun Abayomi who was secretary to the state government then, represented government at the council.

The workers challenged their sack at the industrial court and won but the state government appealed against the judgement and the appellate court again ruled in the workers’ favour.

Despite the judicial victory, the state government did not recall the workers, some of whom have now died of various ailments.

The issue became an albatross to the state government during the campaigns for the governorship election, especially for the ruling All Progressive Congress, (APC) and its candidate.

The workers heave sigh of relief as letters of reinstatement were being distributed to them since last week thus ending their three years of despondency and hunger.

This was confirmed by the chairman of the Senior Staff Association of of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) Azeez Aguda who said the workers who could not hide their feelings were seen in joyful mood after their letters were handed over to them.

The university, according to the judgement of the Industrial Court, will have to pay the reinstated workers their entitlements during their stay at home.

Lagosians Eat N4.5 billion Worth Of food Daily – Sanwo-Olu

0

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has disclosed that the residents of the state spend over N4.5 billion on food items daily. The governor made the comment on the heels of the spike in the prices of foods items. Experts have blamed the development on the war between Russia and Ukraine which started in February this year.

The two warring countries are major exporters of food items of grains which former essential staples for many Nigerians.

Many insist that the figure is high and is not unexpected considering that the state is the economic capital of Nigeria, where the prices of food items are expected to be relatively higher than other states in the country.

The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS had in May reported that the prices of food items have risen sharply across the states with Lagos recording one of the highest.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN Sanwo-Olu at made the comment during a sensitisation workshop themed:  “Implementation of Food Systems Transformation Pathways in Nigeria 2022,” on Monday .

He called for joint collaboration among Southwest goepolitical zone to implement the Food Systems Transformation Pathways 2022.

He said that improving the food systems would influence positive changes and as well address multiple challenges being experienced in the country.

“I am aware that the need for states across the six geopolitical zones to be adequately sensitised on the implementation of the National Food Systems Transformation Pathways is the basis for this workshop.

“It gives me great pleasure to note that Lagos State was selected to host the South-West geopolitical sensitisation which I consider as an acknowledgement of the positive impacts our policies and efforts are making in the agricultural sector.

“As a state government, we will continue to provide infrastructure and incentives to support all private sector initiatives where required,” the governor said.
