UK Boris Johnson Quits Amidst Mass Cabinet Resignations

By Tosin Olatokunbo

The United Kingdom, U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, has resigned from his position  on Thursday.

The British leader stepped down after more than 40 ministers quit his cabinet and urged him to resign.

Follow his resignation, a search has begun among the Conservative Party to appoint a new leader. But Johnson is expected to stay on for few months until a new leader emerges.

In a statement delivered outside his office at No. 10 Downing Street in London, Johnson announced that he has agreed to resign as leader of the ruling Conservative Party, which would result in his departure as prime minister once the party selects a successor through a leadership election possibly in the fall.

He said that process should begin now and the timetable will be announced next week. He also noted that he has appointed a new cabinet of ministers who, along with him, will serve “until a new leader is in place.”

“It is clearly now the will of the parliamentary Conservative Party that there should be a new leader and prime minister,” Johnson said.

“I want you to know how sad I am to be giving up the best job in the world,” he added. “But them’s the breaks.”

Keir Starmer, leader of the opposition Labour Party, released a statement earlier Thursday, saying: “It is good news for the country that Boris Johnson has resigned as Prime Minister. But it should have happened long ago.

At least 10 former Cabinet ministers are now jostling to replace him. But watchers of the  British Parliament said a back bencher could spring a surprise to emerge as the new prime minister.

WAFCON 2022: Super Falcons Vow To Defeat Botswana

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have promised to redeem their image when they file out against Botswana in a must win Group C encounter on Thursday.

The Falcons failed to impress  against the Bayana Bayana of South Africa during their opening match in the ongoing Womens African Cup of Nations, WAFCON, in Morocco.

The Coach Randy Waldrum side were outplayed in their 2-1 loss to South Africa at the FUS Rabat Stadium on Monday, July 4.

The team and their coaches  have received scathing criticism from football fans in the country for their lackluster performance against their arch rival.

Asisat Oshoala, Onome Ebi, Osinachi Ohale, Rita Chikwelu and Rasheedat Ajibade were particularly called out for their  abysmal display, amidst  call  on the coach not to start them in subsequent matches.

Botswana defeated Burundi 4-2 in their opening match, which makes them to sit comfortably on the top of the group ahead of their neighbour, South Africa, with a superior goal difference.

Nigeria must therefore, defeat Botswana to have any chance of qualifying from the group and booking a place at the 2023 FIFA World Cup in New Zealand and Australia. They must also win against Burundi in their Group C encounter.

Sadly, the Super Falcons camp was dealt a big blow as their striker, Asisat Oshoala is ruled out of the Championship, having sustained an injury that forced her out in the 73rd minute against South Africa in their opening fixture.

But, Coach Waldrum has promised Nigeria soccer fans and enthusiasts not to panic as everything is under control, adding that other players in the team are ready to work for the team’s victory.

Recall that the Nine Time WAFCON Champions lost their opening match at the 2018 WAFCON Championship, but still went ahead to win the tournament after putting their opening match defeat behind them.

A major bulk of the 2018 players are presently in this squad.

The United States of America government  has advised its citizens resident in Abuja to be security conscious while in the Nigeria’s capital.

The President Joe Biden government issued the advice after the terrorists attack on Kuje medium correctional center, freeing over 800 inmates.

The Ministry of the Interior said on Wednesday that more than 400 inmates who escaped after the attack has been returned.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Defense, Gen Bashir Magashi (rtd) said over 60 Boko Haram terrorists kept at the facility have all escaped.

The Islamic State For West Africa Province ISWAP, in a viral video showing the attack, has claimed responsibility.

The US Embassy in Nigeria said the advisory became necessary because the terrorists are likely to step up attacks on the nation’s capital.

The advisory reads in part: “On the night of July 5, 2022, an attack on Kuje Prison freed a large portion of the estimated 1,000 prisoners.  The prison lies approximately 27 miles southwest of the Central Business District.  An increase in crime is expected in and around Abuja.

“It is recommended that U.S. citizens should maintain a high state of personal security awareness for the next two weeks and avoid unnecessary travel on the airport road.

“Crime: Crime is endemic throughout Nigeria and tends to spike after dark.  Avoiding locations and situations that increase the likelihood of being victimized is the best defense.  Avoid displays of valuables and limit nighttime activity.

“Terrorism: Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad.

“Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack –including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to target crowds more effectively.  Frequently, their aim is focused on unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as: High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.) Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists

“Places of worship, Schools, Parks, Shopping malls and markets, Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights).

“Actions to Take:

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Carry proper identification.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Review your personal security plans.
  • Always drive with your windows rolled up and the doors locked.
  • Avoid large gatherings and protests.
  • Review alternative travel routes in case of unexpected protests or unrest.
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
  • Always keep the doors to your residence locked, even when at home.”

Terrorists Attacks: HURIWA Demands  Buhari’s Resignation

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA has demanded the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari over the double terrorists attack in the country on Tuesday.

The daring terrorists had first attacked the president Advance convoy in Katsina his home state, killing at least two policemen and many other injured.

Few hours After, some gunmen suspected to be terrorists, attacked Kuje Medium Prison, freeing over 800 inmates, according to the Ministry of the Interior.

As a result of the incident many Nigerians have demanded the resignation of President Buhari who they say has lost control of the situation.

The two incidents according to Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), have further exposed the failure  in the security system of the country.

The association has therefore, asked President Muhammadu Buhari to resign or be impeached over his failure to tackle the situation.

HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, in a statement, on Wednesday in Abuja, expressed belief that the Buhari government and the military are confortable with the spate of terrorist attacks in the country, as they have failed to deploy the 12 Super Tucano fighter jets against terrorists turning the country into another Afghanistan.

According to the statement, “These major incidents are too heavy to be ignored. Terrorists are becoming daring because the government is in bed with armed Fulani terrorists.

“These bandits were designated as terrorists by a Federal High Court in November 202, but eight months after, the government has not taken any definitive military actions to stamp them out.

“In fact, the 12 Super Tucano fighter jets bought from the United States have not been deployed against the terrorists in the North-West despite that the court judgement ordered the government to do so.

“The failure and inaction of the government have buoyed the heinous and condemnable crimes of the terrorists who now make a fortune from the odious venture of kidnapping Nigerians.

“They have gone as far as collecting taxes like in Kaduna where farmers have so far paid N400 million in protection tax to Fulani terrorists.

“Similarly, attacks on prisons have grown so much under Buhari. There have been about 15 jailbreaks in the last five years under Buhari and over 3,400 inmates have fled.

“Buhari has failed Nigerians and himself. This is the time for either Buhari to resign or he be impeached if the National Assembly members can grow ball.

“They must do it or else Nigeria is doomed and over 200 million refugees will flow out of Nigeria. Why is the minister of interior is yet to resign?” HURIWA said

Ondo State Governor,  Oluwarotimi Akeredolu,SAN, has said that the call for State Police is not for self aggrandizement, but a reality of the time.

The  governor also condemned the attack on President Muhammadu Buhari’s convoy by bandits in Kastina State on Tuesday, describing the attack as daring.

He spoke on Wednesday in Akure, while playing host to his former school mates at Loyola College Ibadan (1968/1972) set.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Richard Olatunde in a statement, said the Old Boys were led by their Acting President, Ayodele Adigun.

Governor Akeredolu lamented the security situation in the country, adding that it had gone from bad to worse.

He noted that the country’s security challenges have gone beyond Fulani herdsmen to the menace of bandits and ISWAP.

“We Governors in the Southwest met and we are still more than convinced that there is no solution other than State Police.

“The truth is that we will be prepared to protect ourselves and die in the process more than other people from outside. We can only protect ourselves better.

“We will be more committed to protecting ourselves. By the time we have State Police, we will be encouraged to recruit people in a Local Government to work in that Local Government as security.

“For me, State Police is not for self aggrandizement. It is a reality of the time. For us in the South and even in the North, I know so many of them that have come to accept that a single command of Police is not good for this country. This country is too big.

“We will continue to make our voice heard everywhere. We are almost there. We are licking our wounds here over the June 5 attack in Owo.

“It is a serious wound. We will never forget. We are putting together a memorial in a conspicuous place in Owo.”

Earlier, the Acting President of the Loyola College Old Boys’Association (1968/1972) set,  Ayodele Adigun condemned the June 5 attack in Owo, while expressing shock that such heinous crime could be carried out in the Southwest.

He said the attack was particularly aimed at tarnishing the image of the Governor and rubbishing his efforts so far, especially on the security of lives and property of the people.

Adigun said: “We want to commend you. You are the soul of the Southwest on Security. We know your attitude against injustice. Your name has been written in gold in the history of Southwest.

“Yesterday we heard about bandits attacking the President’s convoy. We need to end these lawlessness. We need to bring out this evil that is destabilizing Nigeria.

“As your former school mates, we are solidly behind you. We don’t want you to relent on your efforts in championing State Police.

“The first of a government is to provide security of lives and property. Without security, there would be no development.

“Farmers are afraid to go to the farm. Investors are afraid to invest in Nigeria. We must put an end to this insecurity.”

Greener Pasture: NIDCOM Boss Warns Nigerians To Avoid  Northern Cyprus

By Akinwale Kasali

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/ Chief Executive Officer, Nigeria Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, has warned Nigerians seeking greener pastures to avoid Northern Cyprus.

Dabiri-Erewa issued the advice as a result of the plight of Nigerians schooling in the Turkish controlled island.

In a statement released by Gabriel Odu, Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit of NIDCOM, the Commission said the warning was necessary following the recent visit by members of the Nigerian Diaspora Youth Ambassador, which raised an alarm over the plight of Nigerian students in Northern Cyprus.

It was gathered that Nigerian youths are suffering from intense depression as a result of the inhuman treatment meted to them, leading to some of them committing suicide.

David Alozie, President of the Nigerian  Diaspora Youth, who led a four-man delegation to Dabiri-Erewa in Abuja, said the purpose of the visit to the Commission is to appeal for quick intervention on the plight of Nigerian students in Northern Cyprus.

He added that Nigerian students are being racially profiled and deported on arrival at the airport for establishing contact with any individual in Southern Cyprus.

Alozie added that Nigerian students are also forced to pay for tuition in British Pound Sterling whereas other foreign students pay in Turkish Lira (TL).

The Group, has however shown willingness to collaborate with NIDCOM and other relevant agencies to create more awareness on the challenges Nigerian youths are facing in Northern Cyprus.

Alozie said: “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is not the best place to study, as the majority of the institutions there are not recognized by the European Union (EU) or any country in the world”.

In her reaction, Dabiri-Erewa advised that Northern Cyprus has become a dangerous transit route for migrants, particularly Nigerians stressing that the country is not recognized by any country in the world except Turkey.

She, therefore, stressed the need for further awareness to sensitize Nigerian youths who are leaving the country with the hope of a better education.

The NIDCOM Boss commended the President and his entire team’s efforts so far but stated that “the team has a bigger job to do in creating awareness for youths in Nigeria as it is better to stay in your country alive than risk your life in going to a country where uncountable and unresolved cases of young Nigerians have been and are still being recorded”.

Dabiri-Erewa gave assurance that the Commission will continue to work with relevant agencies like the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the Parent Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the nagging issue of Northern Cyprus.

“It should be noted that Northern Cyprus is recognized only by the Republic of Turkey, and Nigeria and other countries do not have an Embassy there making it difficult to take Northern Cyprus up with the United Nations or European Union,” she noted.

The president, according to a statement from the Presidency left the country on Wednesday to Dakar, the Senegalese capital to attend a World Bank event.

Indeed, many Nigerians will not be happy that Buhari left the country amidst the serious security situation in the country, particularly the the double  terrorists attacks in his home state Katsina and Abuja, the nation’s capital in the last 24 hours.

Terrorists had attached the president’s convoy on Tuesday, leaving some security aides critically wounded.

Obi Vows To Remove Petrol Subsidy, Says $40bn Has Been Wasted

Peter Obi

By Tosin Olatokunbo

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP will remove fuel subsidy if he becomes president.

While answering question from reporters in London on Tuesday Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s minister of Information said the federal government will not removed the subsidy on petrol anytime soon.

He said the decision is part of efforts to assist many Nigerians to cope with the current economic situation, like other government across the world.

The subsidy on PMS has cost government billions of naira, and close to N4 trillion will be budgetted for it next year, the government said.

Not a few Nigerians, including the nation’s international development partners such as the World Bank, IMF have called for subsidy on petrol to be removed, to free up resources for government to develop critical infrastructure in the country.

But some have equally argued that removing subsidy and total deregulation of the product, at this moment will add to the economic problems of Nigerians particularly the poor.

Speaking on Wednesday during a live interview on Arise TV, Obi said he will remove petrol subsidy because it’s a scam. He explained that the poor are not actually benefitting from it.

He said the subsidy is a waste considering the huge amount that has been allocated in the last few years, which should have been diverted to other productive areas that can benefit Nigerians.

“We have spent over $40 billion on subsidy. Our total education expenditure in the past 10 years is about N8 trillion (about $20 billion on $400/$1). This is 50 percent of it,” Obi said.

According to him, “If we spent $20 billion in power, we would have been generating and distributing 20,000 megawatts of electricity today.

“It means subsidy alone would have solved a lot of issues in our education, health and in power. If we have 20,000mw, we will be growing at more than 4 percent and add over $100 billion to our GDP.

“Within the same period, we’ve borrowed $90 billion, which we’re servicing. With this, you could see total mismanagement of resources that could have changed the entire north… that vast land would have been huge farmland.”

“We have to study and look at it critically. Yes and No, because I would remove it, but I have to offer them what would be equivalent to what we are removing.

“Yes, I am going to use the resources to do something that would benefit, but if I am not going to do that I am not going to remove it. You must be able to offer something in replacement for what you are going to do.

“I cannot spend $40 billion on subsidy and expended 50 percent of it on education and health even security. Are you saying [petrol] subsidy is more important than the security of lives and property?

“I have been saying subsidy is a scam, and I will continue to say it. There are so many scams all over the place, including the cost of governance.”

Meanwhile, there seems no end to the scarcity of petrol across the country. Long queue of cars at petrol stations has refused to disappear, even as  marketers of the product insist that they could no longer sell at government regulated pump price of N165 per litre.

Most filling stations in Lagos and Abuja and other major cities, are now selling at N200 per litre and above. Black marketers are now having a field day selling at cut throat prices to desperate motorists.
