Dogara Rejects APC’s Muslim-Muslim Ticket

0

Yakubu Dogara, former Speaker of the House of Representatives says the decision of the ruling party to field a Muslim-Muslim ticket in next year’s presidential election is a threat to Nigeria’s corporate existence and unity.

The former Speaker is the latest among All Progressives Congress, APC stalwarts that have criticized the decision of the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu’s for picking Kassim Shetima, a former Governor of Borno state as his running mate for the 2023 presidential election.

A gale of defections has recently swept through the party in the wake of the choice of Shetima to run with the former Lagos state governor and APC National Leader.

Speaking, Yakubu who was among some leaders of the party initially shortlisted for Tinubu to pick from said the party has made an ungodly decision by going for same faith ticket.

It was wrong for Tinubu to pick another Muslim to run with him “at this time of national peril”, he said.

The former Speaker spoke at the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN’s 12th General Assembly and Leadership Transition Ceremony, in Abuja the nation’s capital.

According to him, “I want to say emphatically that CAN’s position on Muslim/Muslim ticket in this country, at this moment of national peril, is not CAN’s only position, I believe that is God’s position.

“We serve a God of justice, our God is righteous, our God is the author of diversity, and he wants as diverse as we are to come together. So, CAN’s position as much as it is a righteous position, it is the position of all of us who live righteousness, justice, diversity and are working to harness it for the advancement of this country.

“We are all aware that in the past weeks, the Nigerian mainstream media and the general public have been occupied with the discussions on the Muslim-Muslim ticket by the All Progressive Congress (APC), one of the political parties in the build-up to the 2023 general elections.

“We clearly want to emphasize that this is not healthy for the highly diversified Nigerian space, especially in the face of the growing and alarming insecurity in our nation at the moment. Any well-meaning presidential candidate will focus the all-inclusive Federal Character.

“Consequently, the Nigerian Christian youth are not unaware of division and tension currently overheating an heated polity in Nigeria and, therefore, will not support or encourage any action or decision capable of further dividing and setting this nation on fire.

“Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket insults the sensitivity of Nigerians and the Christian youths are saying a big NO!” Alfred Olushola, North Central president of the body had said.

Meanwhile, the magazine learnt that Tinubu met with Governor Nasir El Rufai of Kaduna state and former Governor Adams Oshimhole of Edo state in preparation for the February 2023 presidential election. Sources pricy to the meeting held in Tinubu’s Abuja home, said the duo has been chosen by Tinubu to lead the APC presidential campaign.

CBN: Emefiele To Face Senate Amidst Crumbling Naira

CBN Gov Emefiele

Godwin Emefiele, Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN Governor will soon be invited by the Nigerian Senate over the freefall of Naira in the last few weeks. The national currency has suffered a hit against other foreign currencies since the beginning of the year, with no end in sight to its continuous woes.
Lat week, the CBN warned politicians against illegal purchase of dollars with naira for the purpose of the 2023 electioneering campaigns, in what financial experts described as one of the last-ditch efforts to salvage the naira from further sliding.
Emefiele gave the warning after the monthly Monetary Policy Meeting, MPC meeting.
He said “For those who want to use the naira to buy dollars because of election, I want to warn, not advise, that it is illegal to do so. Whereas it will sound more convenient that you should carry dollars because it has a lot of value in your pocket.
“But if the security agencies hold you, you know the implication of that, we would continue from our side. We have our apparatus through which we monitor the movement of funds between customers or between banks and customers from one bank to the other bank.
“Any bank that we find in those types of transactions that we consider to be unauthorised or that we consider to be illegal. You can imagine that your account will be placed on post no debit (PND).”

At the time the apex bank governor gave the warning, the American greenback as Dollar is known was exchanged for N650 at the unofficial currency exchange market. The currency has dipped further to over N700 to a dollar within a week with no prospect of gaining against the dollar.
Other interventions so far adopted by the government bank in the last one year to save the naira includes the ban of Abokifx, a website that collates the black-market exchange rates of naira.
The firm was accused of “illegal activity that undermines the economy,” by the CBN.
Also, the CBN last year stopped the sale of forex to bureau de change in the country after accusing them of sabotaging the economy. The Emefiele-led bank now sell forex direct to commercial banks who in turn sell to customers.
The magazine learnt that the leadership of the Senate is seriously worried that the situation could get worse, and has therefore decided to summon the CBN governor on the way forward.
“We cannot continue like this and nothing is done. If the situation is allowed to continue the way it is, we may just wake up one day and the naira will be exchanged N1000 to a dollar.
“This is not acceptable to us. The CBN which is in charge of the government’s monetary policy must come up with a solution. We will all put heads together to chart a way forward before out currency totally collapsed, taking the economy with it,” a senator said on Wednesday.

Update: Jailed Lawyer, Inibehe, Demanded Two Policemen Leave Court Room; SERAP Demands Release

Inibehe Effiong

By Adesina Soyooye

A possible reason why a Lagos-based Human Rights Lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, was sent to a one month imprisonment by the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Honourable Justice Ekaette Obot, has been adduced.

Effiong who flew into Uyo from Lagos to defend a client, Lawrence Ekpenyong in a case instituted against him by State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, was sent to a one-month imprisonment by Obot.

In a Whatsaap message he sent out, Effiong said he had objected to the order by the CJ that a Reprter from Premium Times leave the Court because he felt that the public had a right to observe the proceedings since it was a public case. The CJ asked him to continue with cross examination.

But the Lawyer did more than that.

Effiong requested that two armed Police men in the Court be sent out of the Court because he did not feel safe with them around.

Effiong: “I obeyed. I informed the Court that I was not feeling comfortable and safe having two armed Mobile Policemen seated inside the Court room, that it was strange and that I felt unsafe. I applied for the Judge to excuse the armed Policemen from the courtroom.

“The Honourable Chief Judge then ordered me to step out of the Bar, that she was sending me to Prison. She then ordered the Policemen to send me to prison.”

CJ Obot refused to adhere to the pleadings of two lawyers in Court who pleaded with her not to send Obot to Prison.

But the Socio and Economic and Accountability Project, SERAP has threatened to go to Court if Effiong was not released immediately.

On its Twitter handle it held Governor Emmanuel responsible for Effiong’s fate.

It said: “Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel must immediately and unconditionally release Lawyer Inibehe Effiong who has reportedly been sent to Uyo Prison while in Court representing his client against the Governor. We’ll see in Court if Effiong is not immediately released.”

At the time of writing this, the Nigerian Bar Association was yet to react to the incident.

Oyo: Makinde Reinstates 129 Public Primary School Teachers Sacked by Previous Administration

By Akinwale Kasali

The Governor Seyi Makinde led Oyo State administration has been praised for reinstating 129 public primary school teachers illegally sacked by the previous administration of Late Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

Congratulating the reinstated Teachers, the  Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran said that the Executive Council of Oyo State has approved that a total of 129 teachers wrongly dismissed by the Oyo State Government between 2011 and 2019 be reinstated, subject to agreeing not to demand for arrears of salaries for the period they were away. The State Government has  converted the period to leave of absence.

Adeniran appreciated  Governor Makinde for his kindness and selfless consideration in administering the Pacesetter State.

He noted that the recent reinstatement of the state’s 129 school teachers who were fired by the previous administration, is a symbolic achievement that cannot be neglected.

A statement by the Head, Media Team, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Olamide Adeniji,  stated that: “This is a plus for the education sector. Apart from being an addition to the dwindling number of teachers in the public primary sector, thousands of family dependents who have been subjected to untold economic hardship due to the layoff of their breadwinners will now have a new lease of life”.

Adeniran, therefore, called on teachers in the state to reciprocate Makinde’s gesture, through commitment to duties and redoubling their dedication to work.

He also called on them to key into the administration’s goal to change the narratives in the education sector of the State.

Akure, Ondo State Capital, Now Ghost Of Former Self – Ondo PDP Scribe

Kenedy Peretei - PDP Publicity Secretary

By Ayodele Oni

The Publicity Secretary of People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) in Ondo state, Mr Kenedy Peretei, has taken up the present administration over the deteriorating  social amenities in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

Peretei, in a release on Wednesday in Akure pointed out that “Akure, unarguably was the cleanest city in Southwest Nigeria before Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN became Governor but now, a very sorry sight to behold.

“Starting from the entrance to the Government House, Alagbaka, where Akeredolu and his family reside, it is difficult to believe that a Governor lives there.

“The immaculate white paint that welcomed visitors to the Government House is looking more like some ancient shrines. The entire frontage overgrown with weeds.

“A friend last week sarcastically remarked that, one does not need to ponder about the kind of Governor Ondo State has, if he merely sees the front of the Government House.

“Everywhere in the city centre is littered with huge heaps of refuse. Median of major roads are lined up with clusters of waste bins amidst decomposing contents.

“The Ondo State Waste Management Board in previous administrations had contractors that cleared refuse from homes, public buildings and markets. That is no more.

“Through some shadowy arrangements, private companies have taken over the evacuation of refuse, a responsibility they have tragically failed to discharge.

“The Akeredolu government has not been able to deliver on any area of social responsibility to the people of Ondo State.

“When the Free school shuttle buses disappeared from the roads, the explanation was that, government can no longer fund the service.

“When Mother and Child Hospital started to ask for astronomical charges for services that were previously free, the answer was that, government had no money.

“When state owned tertiary institutions were plagued with intractable strikes and protests, government’s reply was, ‘no money.’

“One is then tempted to ask, what exactly does the Ondo State Government have money for? Because even the most basic, being workers’ salaries are not paid.

“Akure, a city that attracted tourists and visitors is now a ghost of its former self. Most of the roads are no longer motorable due to potholes or uncompleted construction works that have taken more than four years.

“Driving through major roads at night used to be fun. Same roads are perpetually in the dark with overgrown grasses in the median. This was not the Akure that Akeredolu inherited in 2017.

“In one of his usual outbursts, Akeredolu was reported to have said, he will punish Akure for not voting for him during the 2020 Governorship election.

“The fact that, he did not appoint a State Commissioner for Akure South Local Government in his second term was attributed to his poor outing at the elections.

“While, this kind of vindictiveness is the governor’s trademark, will it be sensible to scapegoat a State Capital that is home to all Ondo State people.

“There are so many areas in Akure that you can hardly find indigenous Akure people. But this is the story of Akure and Akeredolu.

“No matter the offence of Akure residents, it will be advisable for Akeredolu to at least return the city to how he met it. Restore street lights, clean up the refuse that have littered everywhere, repaint the Government House and clear the overgrown grasses around the place.”

The state commissioner for infrastructure, Raimi Aminu had told members of the state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ) on Tuesday that potholes in some major streets in Akure was due to  recent increase in cost of bitumen and the current increased down pour.

He said government was doing everything possible to fix them, targeting the appropriate weather such that resources would not be wasted as the asphalt is not friendly with too much water.

“The pot holes issue is a thing of concern to us. We have the estimate, we have the bills here but there is no money. And we even want to start on credit these days, the rain is disturbing again.

“The ones we did recently, we will have to repeat because of the rain. Look at that Fiwasaye Roundabout, somewhere in Ijapo even the road to the governor’s office. Everytime we patched and patched. It is because of the weather.

“So we need some dry weather because if asphalt moisture content is too much, it will spoil again. So we should plan such that immediately we are approaching dry season, we swing into action.”

Oba Lekan Balogun, the Olubadan of Ibadan Land is battling with an unknown  ailment that has, for weeks  been of concern to the Oyomesi (Kingmakers).

The health of the recently crowned Monarch has turned bad. He is to be flown abroad for proper Medical Care.

The 42nd Olubadan who was installed on March 11, 2022 amidst fanfare has since been moving in and out of hospitals in the past few weeks.

Sources at the Ali-Iwo compound family house of the King revealed  that ‘Kabiesi’s sickness is related with his age.

The Monarch is presently in his 80s, as the Royal House is waiting earnestly for an approval from the Governor Seyi Makinde led Oyo State Government before he is flown to the United Kingdom for treatment.

The sickness of the Olubadan became obvious weeks back when one of his children got married in London, United Kingdom. The King was absent and was represented by his younger brother, Senator Kola Balogun.

The Olubadan was a former Presidential Aspirant on the platform of Social Democratic Party(SDP). He was also a Gubernatorial Candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State in the present political dispensation and a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the Fourth Republic before he ascended his father’s throne as the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland.

PDP Senators Walk out

By Akinwale Kasali

There is trouble in the Senate. Aggrieved and disappointed at Senate President, Ahmad Lawan’s, handling of a motion raised on the unprecedented insecurity in the country, Senators elected on the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, staged a walk-out.

The PDP Lawmakers walked out following Lawan’s dismissal of Minority Leader, Phillip Aduda’s motion on insecurity.

Senate President Lawan failed to allow Senator Aduda, representing the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Senatorial District to present his motion on security.

Lawan said Aduda did not speak to him about the motion as required by their rules. As the Senators walked out, they chanted: “All we are saying, Buhari must go.”

It would be recalled that a couple of  days ago, the Federal Ministry of Education on Monday ordered the immediate closure of the Federal Government College located in Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu who gave the directive said the closure became necessary following a security breach on Sheda and Lambata Villages, suburbs of Kwali Area Council, which also threatened FGC Kwali.

According to the Minister, the timely intervention of Security Agencies saved the situation.

Adamu Adamu also directed that arrangements should be made for final year students to conclude their NECO examinations.

The Minister also directed Principals of Unity Colleges across the country to liaise with Security Agencies within their jurisdictions in order to forestall any security breach in  schools.

Earlier, the Management of the College, had asked parents to evacuate their wards from the school over the fear of attack by terrorists, which has caused panic among the management, staff, students and parents of the school.

This was followed by the threat by terrorists to kidnap President Muhammadu Buhari and Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

And, on Friday, terrorists ambushed a group of officers and soldiers of the elite Guards Brigade in Abuja. They killed two officers – a Captain and a Lieutenant – as well as eight soldiers.

Akwa Ibom: Lawyer Sent To Prison In Case Against Gov Emmanuel

0

The Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Ekaette Obot, has sent a human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, to prison.
Effiong who is handling a case for his client, Leo Ekpeyong before Justice Obot’s court in Uyo disclosed this in a message he posted on his WhatsApp status around 10:40 a.m. on Wednesday.
Recall that the rights lawyer had last month accused the judge of bias in handling the libel suit filled against his client by Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom state.
The governor sued Ekpeyong for accusing him of buying judgment.
“I have been sent to Uyo prison by the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaette Obot, for one month for defending Leo Ekpenyong in a libel suit filed by Governor Udom Emmanuel,” Effiong said in the message.
The Lagos based lawyer later posted on his twitter what transpired in the court before Justice Obot ordered that he be sent to prison.
He said: “Akwa Ibom ordered a Premium Times reporter to leave the court. I said my lord, we were thinking that since the proceeding is public, that members of the public should be allowed to observe the proceeding. My Lord asked me to proceed with cross examination,” he wrote.
“I will be going to the Uyo Correctional Centre now. I have not done anything. I wasn’t even opportunity to say anything before the “conviction”. Two lawyers in court appealed to the Hon. Chief Judge but my Lord insisted that I must be jailed.”
Effiong had last month accused the judge of bias in her handling of a libel suit filed against him by the state governor.
The governor had sued Ekpenyong for defamation of character over a publication in which he accused the governor of “buying judgment” from the 2019 National Assembly Election Tribunal.

In a motion on notice filed by Effiong, he asked Justice Obot to reassign the case to a neutral judge.

He accused the Chief Judge of impunity, bias and violation of the code of conduct.

“AN ORDER of the Honourable Court for this Court (CORAM:HON. JUSTICE EKAETTE FF OBOT) to disqualify and release herself from further hearing and or presiding over the proceedings of this case, that is suit no: HU/279/2019 between DEACON EMMANUEL GABRIEL UDOM VS LEO EKPENYONG, ESQ on grounds of fair hearing, particularly for bias,” the court document read.

“AN ORDER of this Honorable Court reassigning this case, that is suit no: HU/279/2019 between DEACON EMMANUEL GABRIEL UDOM VS LEO EKPENYONG, ESQ to another Judge of the Akwa Ibom State High Court to be heard de novo.”

Justice Obot in 2021 lashed out at the defence lawyer, Effiong who said the court had breached the Nigerian Constitution in its December 15, 2020 judgment against his client.

The court on December 15, 2020, ordered the defendant to pay N1.5 billion to the governor as general damages for libel.

Effiong however challenged the judgement and one other involving a former senator, Effiong Bob and successfully persuaded the court to set them aside.

“You don’t stand before me and talk nonsense.

“I’ve been on this side of the law for over 30 years and you don’t come and teach me the law from there,” Justice Obot told the lawyer on one occasion.

Human Rights Lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, Jailed

Inibehe Effiong

By Adesina Soyooye

When Inibehe Effiong, a Lagos-based Human Rights Lawyer, flew into Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Wednesday morning, his mission was to defend a client in Court and fly back to Lagos.

But that did not happen.

Instead, Inibehe has been thrown into jail by the Chief Judge of the State, the Honourable Justice Ekaette Obot. He will spend one month at the Uyo Correctional Centre.

The Lawyer went to defend Leo Ekpenyong in a libel suit filed against him by the State Governor, Udom Emmanuel.

As the case began, the CJ, allegedly, asked a Premium Times Reporter in the Court to leave.

Trouble started for the Lawyer when he interjected and told the CJ that since the case is public it was good for the public to observe it.

Inibehe in a message on Whatsaap to make public his plight narrated:

“The Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom ordered a Premium Times Reporter out of the Court. I said my lord, we were thinking that since the procedure is public, the members of the public should be allowed to observe the proceedings.

My Lord asked me to proceed with cross examination.”

Inibehe did not, however, say if he continued with the cross examination or argued with the Chief Judge.

But he informed: “I will be going to the Uyo Correctional Centre now. I have not done anything. I wasn’t even given the opportunity to say anything before this “conviction’. Two lawyers in Court appealed to the Honourable Chief Judge, but my lord insisted I must be jailed.”

It is not known yet what the reaction of the Nigerian Bar Association. NBA,  both in the State and  the National level will be.

Interview: We Import 80 Per cent Of What We Consume-BUA Chairman

0

Abdulsamad Rabiu, Chairman of BUA Group Speaks on Nigeria’s food crisis In the wake of the Russia-Ukraine War

High inflation, food insecurity, energy prices: What are you going to do to solve some of these issues?
Rabiu: Part of the problem is that we import 80% of what we consume. For example, Africa imported over 55 million tons of wheat last year, and wheat is one of the commodities that has really been hit hard in terms of high prices. Since the Ukrainian-Russian (conflict) started, we have seen a situation where the price (of wheat) got from $250 to almost $600 per ton. And you know Africa relies heavily on Russian and Ukrainian wheat.

So how is your input being affected?

Rabiu: If you import and the price is double, what do you do? You have to increase the prices. And a lot of people cannot really afford that. So we are seeing a decrease in terms of production, processing and consumption, and that is a big issue. That is why I keep saying that we have to look inwards, do as much as we can to add value to what we have. We have to increase (our) production for the food security of the continent.

You have been in the pasta business, for example. Why haven’t you already gotten into farming? I know wheat is difficult to grow.

Rabiu: Wheat is difficult to grow but we are also into sugar and we’re building the most advanced sugar plantation in Nigeria. It’s a 20,000-hectare, four-in-one, fully integrated sugar plantation with sugar mill, sugar refinery, ethanol and power plant. We decided to do that because we realized we were spending a lot of money to import raw sugar and that is something that could be easily planted and produced in Nigeria. Our inputs as far as raw sugar is concerned will come down drastically.
Now for the hard part, says Secretary General of African Continental Free Trade Area
Now for the hard part, says Secretary General of African Continental Free Trade Area

The African Continental Free Trade Area went live (in 2021). Have you seen a real impact on your business?

Rabiu: The free trade area is an amazing arrangement. We all need to come together to enjoy the benefits. Of course, we also have challenges as far as infrastructure is concerned, and for the agreement to succeed, you need to fix your infrastructure space, especially in areas like ports.

You still find that challenging?

Rabiu: I give you an example: it’s more expensive to ship goods from Nigeria to, say, Lomè (in Togo, West Africa) than from Nigeria to Brazil. And that’s because we have the vessels without the ports. So those issues are there and we need to fix our infrastructure.
