Yahaya Bello’s Inciting Video, an Act of Terrorism – PDP; Says Governor Should Be Placed Under Security Watch

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it is alarmed by the contents of a disturbing video making the rounds, and threatening Nigerians

In the video, the  Governor  of Kogi State, was seen threatening fire and brimstone. He said there will be fire in 2023. He said he would hold the fire in his hands and anybody who fail to do his bidding will be consumed by the fire, and thus join his mother (the Governor’s mother) in her grave.

The Governor spoke when he was addressing his supporters.

But the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, says it is horified by the contents of the video.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba the Governor was “inciting his supporters, threatening to burn and unleash maximum violence on Nigerians during the 2023 general elections.”

Said the Party: “In the video, Governor Bello was heard issuing terrorism threats in which he said, “I will personally light a fierce fire in my hand whoever want it we shall use it to burn them, whoever survive it will thank God… Whoever is against us we will make him or her join my mother and lie with her (my mother) in grave.”

By FBI definition, terrorism, the PDP noted, is the “unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives”.

The Party continued: “This brazen threat by Governor Yahaya Bello raises apprehensions in the public space of the existence of a killer squad established to inflict violence on Nigerians ahead of the 2023 general elections just because they have rejected the corrupt, divisive and rudderless All Progressives Congress (APC), which failure is most manifest by Yahaya Bello’s abysmal performance in Kogi State.

“From his outburst, Nigerians now know the individuals who engineered the gruesome killing of many of our citizens including the PDP Woman Leader in Kogi State, Mrs. Salome Abu, who was burnt alive in her house in 2019,

“Also, Nigerians now have more insight into the disappearance of Hon. Adelabu Musa, the PDP Chairman in Okene Local Government Area for over three years now.

“Furthermore, the PDP recalls how the Bello-led Kogi State Government was accused of breeding and arming thugs as well as fake security operatives to harass and attack Nigerians in Kogi State during the 2019 general elections.

“This threat to violence and actual violence to Nigerians especially at this time have the capacity to cause a breach of public peace, truncate the 2023 electoral process and derail our democracy.”

The PDP asked President Muhammadu Buhari call Governor  Bello to order and place him and his supporters on security watch list as threat to democracy ahead of the 2023 general elections.

“Our Party also charges the Inspector General of Police to immediately commence a comprehensive investigation into the activities of Governor Yahaya Bello with a view to nipping this ugly trend in the bud as well as prosecuting him at the end of his tenure as Governor of Kogi State.

“We urge Nigerians, especially those in Kogi State not to be deterred by Yahaya Bello whose days in office are numbered but remain vigilant and continue to rally with the PDP in the determination to liberate our nation from the stranglehold of the APC and the likes of Yahaya Bello, come 2023”

The statement read in part: “The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Police Command CP Edward Egbuka, psc immediately led a team of tactical operatives to the scenes for on-the-spot assessment and has equally ordered the deployment of additional operational assets consisting of operatives of the Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Unit, Quick Response Unit, State Intelligence Bureau in synergy with other security agencies to restore normalcy in the area.

“The police personnel on duty both at the station and the banks quickly recovered from the sudden attack and gallantly repelled the attackers who were forced to flee – some into nearby bushes, others with their vehicles.

“The hoodlums abandoned three vehicles used for the operation in their haste to escape, some of them with bullet wounds.

Egbuka appealed to residents to go about their lawful businesses and continue to support the police and other security agencies with credible and timely information on the activities of criminal elements in their environs.

PDP Remains Divided Over Ayu, As NEC Meeting Holds

Iyorchia Ayu

By Akinwale Kasali

The crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, keeps lingering with no respite in sight, as the calls for the removal of the National Chairman of the Party, Iyorchia Ayu reverberate.

This has led to speculation  over the fate of the Party holding its  National Executive Council, NEC, Meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 9, 2022.

It was gathered that some members of NEC from the South argue that Ayu’s removal is the only way out of the lingering crisis confronting the party, while the Chairman’s supporters say would not step aside at this critical time when the PDP was preparing for election.

The crisis followed the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the Presidential Candidate of the Party to the disappointment of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike who lost at the PDP Presidential Primaries following, among other factors, the last minute withdrawal of Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, pledging his support for Atiku.

Again, in the choice of the Vice Presidential Candidate of the PDP, Wike was shunned for Delta State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa.

The argument of Wike’s Camp is that Ayu should resign as the Party Chairman since the Presidential candidate should not hail from the same region as the Party’s Chairman, as well as the Board of Trustees Chairman.

Though the PDP set up a panel to resolve the crisis, Wike, supported by four governors and some stakeholders has continued to insist on Ayu’s removal.

Resisting the pressure to leave office, the Party Chair vowed to stay till the end of his four-year tenure. He also dismissed those demanding for  his removal as youngsters who had little knowledge about the formation of the PDP.

The Publicity Secretary of the PDP in Oyo State, Akeem Olatunji, stressed that Ayu’s removal would facilitate Atiku’s electoral victory.

While explaining that the State Chapter of the party had nothing against Atiku and Ayu, Olatunji said their demand was borne out of their desire to see the party emerge victorious at the poll.

He said, “We are passionate about Alhaji Abubakar Atiku winning this presidential election and that is why we are calling for Senator Iyorchia Ayu to step aside and allow somebody from the South to take over.

“We don’t want Alhaji Atiku to just be a presidential candidate, we want him to transform from a candidate to the President-elect of this country by February 2023.

“We believe that part of what can make our job easier is for the national chairmanship of the PDP to come from the South. We don’t want our opponents to use that to campaign against us.

“It’s not that we have anything against Atiku or Senator Ayu, we are not their enemies; we want the party to win. It is better we sort this out now and that is what we are saying. We want the national chairmanship of the PDP to come to the South for balance.”

The stand of the Oyo PDP was also corroborated by the Rivers PDP, as its PDP Chairman, Ambassador Desmond Akawor who called for the resignation of the National Chairman, stressing that the Party Leadership and the Presidential candidate cannot come from the same region.

He said, ‘’That is the commitment he (Ayu) made before we elected the presidential candidate, so he has to fulfill his commitment. He must resign; he should fulfill his commitment. We can’t have the BoT chairman from the north, deputy national chairman and presidential candidate all from the north. Other regions will feel relegated.

“How do we campaign for the people? The election is based on interest, how do we preach to them? Should we tell them when the presidential candidate wins things will normalize? Is that what we are going to preach to the people?’’

Akawor further stated that the power blocs were only seeking equity, justice and fair play, therefore, their quest should be regarded.

He noted: ‘’We don’t have different power blocs; they are people who are requesting equity and fairness, which is the fulcrum of the party.  How are we protected as a zone; how is our interest protected? That is what we are asking for?  So, when these questions are answered, I don’t think we’ll  have a power bloc; PDP is one party.’’

But the Osun PDP Acting Chairman, Dr Akindele Adekunle, said Ayu should not be made to resign, at least not now that the party is  preparing for a General Election.

Adekunle said, “There is no point asking Dr Ayu to resign a few months before the presidential election.  My take is to allow the status quo to remain and make changes after the 2023 elections.”

The Ebonyi State Chairman of the PDP, Okoroafor Okorie is of the view that the right thing was ‘’for somebody to make a sacrifice by stepping down from his position which provides a balance in the leadership of the party.’’

“The truth is nobody was born with any position. It is easier to say let’s balance the polity allowing the chairmanship to come from somewhere. If that is the sacrifice that someone has to make in the overall interest of the party, it is a sacrifice worth making.

‘’For me, PDP is the only party that has a structure with a national outlook; forget that APC is occupying the presidency today. If you do not want to bury that national outlook, perception, or narrative and change the paradigm that the PDP is always making, I think it is a sacrifice worth making that somebody should step down.’’

Yoruba Group Urges New British PM To Deal With Nigeria’s Historic Errors

Liz Truss

By Akinwale Kasali

Pan Yoruba Coalition, under the aegis of Apapo O’odua Koya, AOKOYA, has urged the new British Prime Minister, Liz Truss, to use her position to correct the historic injustice in Nigeria by supporting the campaign to correct alleged time-long errors.

In a letter sent to Downing Street on Wednesday, AOKOYA said successive British Prime Ministers had turned blind eye and  deaf ears to the festering calamity in Nigeria, a British creation which the group said is inching towards another African calamity.

In the letter signed by the group’s newly elected Assistant Foreign Affairs Secretary, Abdulahi  Olasunkanmi, Apapo Oodua Koya, (AOKOYA) said Britain has a heavy burden on her shoulders which if not addressed has the capacity to invent one of the worst human catastrophes.

The Coalition said two elements make the intervention of Britain in Nigeria’s slip into the abyss crucial: First, Britain is a permanent member of the United Nations, (UN) the world body which responsibility is to promote global peace and prevent war, secondly, Britain created Nigeria out of her own self-conceived economic interests without consideration for humanity and the fears and aspirations of indigenous communities that have continued to suffer cultural and economic genocide intensified with the handing over of Nigeria to the country’s most incompetent, vile, inept and retrogressive Fulani ethnic ruling class.

‘Nigeria is at a stage that war can be let loose any time. The fragments forced together in 1914 by Britain can no longer hold. The possibility of a violent collapse is real. We are certain the British intelligence services are aware of a tottering African country and certain the British political leaders are conscious of the hovering vultures.

“If only for the sake of our innocent children, women and the aged, you as a mother and the new Prime Minister of Britain should tell the political jackals in Nigeria that they should  unbundle the country and free the bottled up spirits to safe the country from needles war’, Olasunkanmi said.

The group said since the 1914 forceful amalgamation by Britain, Nigeria has been an atomic society in constant violent conflict with itself, a contradiction that once led to a civil war that took close to 1 million lives. ‘If one million people died between 1967 and 1970, how many people should die in another war if global voices fail to speak out against the torrents of repression, terrorism, stealing and brigandage the Fulani leadership and their cronies represent in Nigeria.

Apapo O’odua Koya, (AOKOYA) said Nigeria’s foreign debt is about $80b.

‘The country now services foreign debt with 120 percent of her earning. The state hosts and sustains fundamentalists who lay their hands on strategic positions from where they source funds to fuel terrorism and carnage which is spreading across Southern indigenous territories and the middle belt. Rural and urban communities of indigenous peoples have been invaded by armed terrorists whose actions have led to food insecurity, rape, death and ceaseless killings.’

AOKOYA recall that the International Coalition for the Responsibility to Protect said 35,000 Nigerians have been violently murdered by terrorists since 2009.

‘In 2021 alone, 2,600 Nigerians were killed by bandits. Thousands of women have been raped and children butchered. While Britain continues unimpeded economic relations with Nigeria, it would be humane for your country, which we believe is not in short of men and women of conscience to ask questions about a system in your former colony that is sustained by blood, avarice and bullets’ AOKOYA said.

The group said further ‘Your country has rolled out a 40billion pounds energy supply scheme to lower bills to save hundreds of thousands of businesses this winter. You have also rolled out various initiatives to deal with the pitfalls of the Ukraine war.

In Africa, the 200million Nigerians are waiting to see how your government will deal with the mess created in Nigeria with the forceful 1914 merger, a mess that has consumed millions of human souls and now threatening to consume even more millions as the country wobbles through a thick tunnel of misery and hopelessness.

‘Nigerians are footnotes in the books of their leaders. We urge you Madam Prime Minister put pressure Nigerian political class, especially President Mohammadu Buhari to release political detainees, allow  self determination exiles who have fled the country to return home and to allow the United Nations conduct a referendum on ethnic self determination.

AOKOYA said  ‘If you are in a position to rally Europe on any crisis in your continent, we think you should not be averse to doing the same thing in Nigeria to avoid what looks like an impending carnage in a country notorious for blood letting and horrendous human sufferings’.

Police Special Constables Protesting

Commercial activities in Osogbo, Osun State capital were disrupted as some Police Special Constables, on Wednesday, took to the streets  to protest the non payment of their allowances.

They are said to be owed 18 months allowance.

The Police Constables, who converged at Oke-Fia roundabout in the morning, moved through major streets  to register their displeasure over the unpaid allowances.

Dressed in police uniforms, the protesters were armed with placards with different inscriptions. Some of the inscriptions read, “pay us now”, “we’re dying”, we’re hungry.

One of the protesters said; “We’re dying. We spent so much at the College. I have children but it’s 18 months now and I have not been paid.

“Four of us have been killed by armed robbers during attacks on banks in Ikire, Iragbiji and others. We want our money.”

Mini drama ensued as the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Olawale Olokode, tried to calm the protesters, who looked so determined to press home their demands.

The Commissioner promised that the issue being raised by the recruits is being addressed.

2023: Obi Denies Receiving $150m Diaspora Fund

Peter Obi

By James Orji

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP has denied receiving $150 million in funding from Nigerians living abroad. Obi spoke on the background of a claim that he received diaspora funding in contravention of the Electoral Act.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami has recently said the government will go after any political party and candidates that receive funding from the diaspora.

The justice minister said doing so will contravene the country’s extant laws. But legal analysts have disagreed with him, saying the Act did not prevent individual candidates from receiving financial support for their political aspirations from their supporters living abroad.

On Monday, Professor Pat Utomi, a chieftain of the Labour Party said the party will soon release dedicated accounts for his party supporters to send their financial support.

Obi however said he has not received ‘anything’ so far, describing the claim that he collected $150 million as speculation.

According to him, “Nobody has given me anything. That is speculation. What I need is not what they would give me. But what they would give Nigeria, because we need them to turn around Nigeria.

“This is the energy, the capacity that we need to turn around Nigeria. Every country that was turned around, was done by the diaspora. Even in the Bible, Joseph who left later came back to feed his people.

“I am consulting Nigeria diasporans to know why they should be involved in the Nigerian electoral process. And you can see from my conversation and everything that what I am doing is saying let’s get involved.

“They are the most critical components of turning around Nigeria. The investment Nigeria needs to turn around is diasporans. If they believe in Nigeria and bring their resources, both in terms of their material, talent, and energy, we will turn around the country,” the LP presidential candidate said.
