DSS Raids Mamu’s Residence, Office

Tukur Mamu - Bandits Negotiator

By Adesina Soyooye

Operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, have reportedly raided both the residence and office of Tukur Mamu.

The raid, according to reports, was carried out early Thursday morning.

Tukur, the self-appointed negotiator between the terrorists who attacked the Abuja-Kaduna bound Train and the families of the victims, was intercepted and arrested by the INTERPOL on Tuesday, 6th September, 2022, at the Cairo, Egypt, Airport, while he was on his way to Saudi Arabia. In the company of his two wives at the time of his arrest, he was put on another flight back to Nigeria.

On arrival at the Kano International Airport, he was arrested by the DSS on Wednesday, 7th September. He is currently in the custody of the Service.

In a statement signed on Wednesday, September 7, 2022,  by the DSS Spokesman, Dr Peter Afunanya, the Service said it arrested Mamu on the request of the Nigerian Military and other Law Enforcement Agencies which declared Mamu a person of interest in their investigations of security related matters.

Mamu always claimed to be responsible for the release of the victims. His relationship with the Terrorists is not  known, but the victims, on regaining their freedom, always went to see Mamu to thank him. Each of them, allegedly, paid the sum of N100m for freedom.

It is being speculated that Mamu’s arrest may not be unconnected with the allegation that the ransom monies pass through him to the terrorists.

Mamu is the Publisher of the Desert Herald as as Media Consultant to Islamic  Cleric, Sheik Abubakar Gumi.

PDP Chieftain Calls On Atiku To Support Ayu’s Sack

0
Iyorchia Ayu and Atiku Abubakar

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP is not opposed to the calls on the National Chairman of the party Iyorcha Ayu to resign, a chieftain of the party Katch Ononnuju, has said, adding that Ayu has become a problem for the party.

Ayu’s resignation is one of the preconditions demanded by a group led by the Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike for peace to return to the party.

The Rivers helmsman and his supporters are angry with the party as a result of the fallout of the party presidential primary held in June which Atiku won, and the PDP presidential candidate’s decision to pick Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state as his running mate has further riled Wike who has recently been fraternizing with opposition leaders in the country, fueling rumour of his defection from the PDP.

On Wednesday, the Chairman Board of Trustees of the party said he will resign from his position if that will ensure that peace returns.

The PDP chairman has insisted that he will not resign. His insistence to remain in office is believe to have the backing of key Atiku supporters.

But speaking on the issue, Ononnuju said Atiku is not averse to the call on Ayu to resign.

According to him, “The candidate wants Mr Ayu to leave so that he could have a peaceful party to go to the election,” he said.  Ononuju who spoke on Thursday on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme, said Ayu must not be constitute a clog in the wheel of the party to move forward, adding that Ayu will not be the first chairman to be sacked before the end of his tenure.

He said, “If Atiku keeps saying he is a unifier, let him now unify the party by taking decisions and also acting to aid the southerners in this issue of inclusion.

“If he (Ayu)  stays, he divides the party; if he stays, the party could lose. If he stays, the party implodes with the staying put.”

“If he (Ayu) goes, we have mechanisms, we’ve had chairmen who have left without completing their four-year term. The person (Uche Secondus) he replaced didn’t complete his four-year term.

““He should understand the way he came is also the door he will go through. He should understand that our party is that way.”

By Gideon Njoku

The hearing on the appeal filed by the Leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB,  Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, slated for 11th October, 2022, has been rescheduled to an earlier date, 13th September, 2022.

Kanu had filed the appeal to challenge the remaining seven-count charge against him after the others were struck out by the Honourable Justice Zainab Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja, a couple of months ago.

It is not known why the hearing was moved forward, but one of Kanu’s Counsels, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, who issued a Press Statement on the new date,  attributed it to prayers and God’s intervention.

The statement reads;

“Our Appeal  No: CA/ABJ/CR/ 625/2022; BETWEEN NNAMDI KANU VS FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA, earlier scheduled for Hearing on the 11th Day of October, 2022, has been brought forward to the 13th day of September, 2022.

“ChukwuOkike Abiama is on the throne and shall forever remain on the throne.

Your relentless prayers and supplications is positively impacting.

“It therefore means that hearing on  Onyendu’s Appeal challenging the remaining Seven count Charge  filed against him, will now be coming up for Hearing at the Court of Appeal Abuja, next week Tuesday, being the 13th Day of September, 2022.

“Thank you so much Umuchineke for your support so far and remain hugely blessed.

“We move!

Signed :

Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Esq. (KSC)

IPOB’s Lead Counsel.

7th Day of September, 2022.”

Kanu is being prosecuted by the Federal Government for sundry issues including alleged terrorism and treasonable felony.

He was arrested in Nairobi, Kenya in 2021 and brought to Nigeria to face the charges. Since then, he has been in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, from where he appears for his case Court.

A United Nations Body recently asked the Nigerian Government to release Kanu unconditionally.

Ondo Lawmaker Gets Reprieve As Court Stops Sack

0
Success Torhukerhijo

By Ayodele Oni

Reprieve has come for embattled member of  Ondo state House of Assembly as he gets the nod of a High Court to continue functioning as a lawmaker.

An Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure restrained the Speaker of the State House of Assembly from declaring the seat of the lawmaker representing Eseodo constituency, Success Torhukerhijo vacant over alleged anti-party activities.

Aside the Speaker, the court presided by Justice Alero Akeredolu also barred the State House of Assembly, the Speaker, David Oleyeloogun and the All Progressives Congress (APC) from doing anything that could jeopardize the outcome of the case pending before the court.

The State House of Assembly had in August declared the seat of Torhukerhijo representing Ese-Odo constituency vacant over the allegation of anti-party activities levelled against him by the State Chairman of APC.

He was alleged to have defected to the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) where he contested the primary for House of Representatives.

But the lawmaker through his lawyer, Mr Dipo Torhukerhijo dragged the Assembly, the APC, Speaker and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to court challenging the legality of their action in declaring his seat vacant.

In an exparte order, Justice Akeredolu, who read the exhibits and affidavits attached to the motion, said it would be in the interest of justice to preserve the subject matter of the suit and subsequently gave an order halting any step which has to do with the declaration of the seat vacant.

Justice Akeredolu granted “an order of interim injunction restraining the respondents, their officers, servants and agents from giving effect to the purported declaration of the seat of the applicant vacant or taking any steps to prevent the applicant from performing his constitutional duties as an elected member of the House of Assembly or stopping the benefits and entitlements of the applicant as a member of the Assembly pending the hearing and determination of the Originating Motion on Notice before this Court.”

The lawmaker had in his prayers before the court asked for a declaration that alleged anti-party activities levelled against him is not a valid ground for the Declaration of the seat of a member of a House of Assembly vacant under Section 109 (g) of the 1999 Constitution and as such the purported declaration of his seat as vacant by the Speaker is unconstitutional, unlawful, null and void and of no effect whatsoever.

Also, he asked for a declaration that the APC having expelled him as its member and having consistently refused the him the benefits of its protection and advancement of his political interests, goals and aspirations, can legally associate with any other political party of his choice recognized by INEC.

Torhukerhijo said the declaration of his seat vacant at the instance of APC without giving him the benefit of fair hearing is null and void and of no effect whatsoever.

He sought for “an order reversing and setting aside the purported declaration of the claimant’s seat vacant and reversing every other step so far orchestrated and/or taken whether jointly or severally by the defendants, their officers, agents and servants to prevent the claimant from accessing, performing or exercising any of his constitutional rights, duties, responsibilities, obligations, benefits and entitlements as an elected member of the Ondo State House of Assembly because of the Claimant’s alleged exercise of his rights as guaranteed under sections 38(1) and 40 of the 1999 constitution (as amended).”

Justice Akeredolu fixed the hearing of the motion on notice to September 16, 2022.

Copyright Commission Disowns Rival Copyright Society Of Nigeria, Says It Is An Illegal Body

0
Nigeria Copyright Commission - NCC

By Ayodele Oni

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has clarified that only the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria, (MCSN) is empowered under the law to operate as Collective Management Organization (CMO) in music industry.

Spokesman of NCC, Vincent Oyefeso in a statement on Thursday explained that “For the avoidance of doubt, the only CMO with approval to operate in music and sound recordings in Nigeria in accordance with the provisions of the Copyright Act (Cap C28, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria) is the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (MCSN).

“The approval earlier granted to the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) lapsed with effect from 19th May 2019 and it has not been renewed.

“This position was upheld by the Federal High Court, Lagos, in Suit No. FHC/l/CS/425/2020 when the court ruled on 1st December 2021 that COSON was not entitled to the relief of an injunction to restrain the Commission from revoking its operating licence because the licence that it sought to preserve had lapsed.

“Although in line with the provisions of the Copyright Act and the Copyright (Collective Management Organisations) Regulations, 2007, COSON applied in 2019 for the renewal of its licence, it refused to comply with the terms stipulated by the Commission as the regulatory agency, including submission to an independent forensic audit of its accounts.

“It is an offence under sections 39(4) and (5) of the Copyright Act for any group of persons (including a corporate body) to purport to perform the duties of a CMO (also “Collecting Society”) without the approval of the Nigerian Copyright Commission.

“It follows therefore that COSON cannot lawfully perform the functions of a collecting society including negotiating, granting licences, collecting and distributing royalties.

“The Commission is at this point not concerned with other issues bordering on internal governance or the corporate identity of COSON but it is aware of the order of the Federal High Court in Suit No. FHC/L/CS/274/2010 restraining COSON from using or continuing to use the name “Copyright Society of Nigeria Ltd/Gte”, and that its appeal for a stay of execution of that judgment was denied by the same court on 24th June 2020.

“However, this serves as notice to owners, users, corporate bodies and the public on the status of COSON and that certain principal officials of the company are being investigated for criminal infractions under the Copyright Act.

“Therefore, anyone dealing with them as a CMO would be doing so at their own risk. Anyone that receives a demand for royalties from COSON or has any other information that may help the ongoing criminal investigation should please report to the nearest office of the Nigerian Copyright Commission for further action.

“The Commission is using this opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to reforming the copyright system and ensuring that creators and owners of copyright benefit from their intellectual investment in the creative sector.

“Those entrusted with the administration of their rights are held accountable to acceptable standards of accountability and good governance.”

Governor Wike Says Day Of Reckoning Looms For PDP

Nyesom Wike

By Akinwale Kasali

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has lamented the injustice in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, vowing to fight it as no one in the Party can silence him.

The Governor said that the time of reckoning is coming for those who continue to insist that they can take the national leadership of the Party as he is determined to make sure that things are done the right way.

Wike made spoke at the inauguration of the Emohua campus of Rivers State University and the flag-off of staff quarters, performed by the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.

The Rivers State Governor insisted that those trying to take over the leadership of the Party and assert authority would account for every wrong thing that they have done when the day of reckoning comes.

He said, “That is why I am telling the people there, look, it cannot work. You can’t take everything. If you take everything, it will purge you. So you better do the right thing now.

“Don’t sit there and think that you can muscle me and you can do everything; you can manipulate anything. You can think you have the number to make sure you take everything, but the time is coming when you will account for it.”

He insisted that the delivery of quality projects by him and his colleague governors will serve the PDP well in their respective States.

According to him, it will be erroneous for the PDP States that failed to provide good governance to solicit votes from the electorate.

Governor Makinde of Oyo State who is in Wike’s Camp in the PDP crises took a swipe at the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu while Performing the inauguration of the campus and flagging off of the staff quarters. He made a veiled reference to the recent statement credited to Ayu, who said those calling for his resignation were still children when he and others were founding the party.

Makinde:  “If children are doing all of these, I think what Nigeria needs are children. So, my brother Wike, you can be assured that Nigeria appreciates you.”

The Military Asked For The Arrest Of Mamu – DSS On Why It Arrested The Train Hostages Negotiator

0
Tukur Mamu - Bandits Negotiator

By Adesina Soyooye

The  Department of State Services, DSS, has explained why it arrested Tukur Mamu at the Kano International Airport on his arrival from Egypt on 7th September 2022.

Mamu had earlier been arrested by the INTERPOL in Cairo, Egypt on Tuesday, September 6, while waiting to board a flight to Saudi Arabia.  He was in the company of his two wives and one other when he was arrested.

On arrest, and a brief interrogation at the Airport in Egypt, he was put on a flight back to Nigeria. He arrived into the waiting hands of operatives of the DSS who promptly arrested him.

Explaining his arrest, the DSS said it is at the request of the Nigerian Military which expressed interest in Mamu over some security issues he needed to answer to, and clear with them.

The statement signed by Dr Peter Afunanya, Spokesperson, DSS, on Tuesday September 7, 2022, reads: “The Department of State Services (DSS), has been inundated with enquiries in respect of the arrest or otherwise of Tukur Mamu, the self-acclaimed Kaduna Train Hostage negotiator.

“This is to confirm that Mamu, as a person of interest, was intercepted by Nigeria’s foreign partners in Cairo, Egypt, on 6th September, 2022, while on his way to Saudi Arabia. He has since been returned to the country today, 7th September 2022 and taken into the Service’s custody.

“The act followed a request by Nigeria’s Military, Law Enforcement and Intelligence Community to their foreign partners to bring back Mamu to the country to answer critical questions on ongoing investigations relating to some security matters in parts of the country.

“The public may wish to note that the law will appropriately take its course.”

Mamu is the Publisher of Desert Herald as well as the Media Consultant to Sheik Abubakar Gumi,  a Medical Doctor- turned Islamic Cleric.

Mamu became a popular name in Nigeria because of his self-appointed role as a negotiator between the Terrorists who attacked the Abuja-Kaduna Train in March, killed eight people and abducted 68 others.

Since the embarrassing incident, Mamu has, according to him, been responsible for the release of scores of them. He is also the one who gives upto date information on the welfare of the captives and the state of mind of the terrorists.

It is not known if money is passed through him for the release of the hostages or what his exact relationship with the terrorists is, but at a point, he said he had withdrawn from his self-appointed role because the attitude of the Federal Government was not encouraging. But he is usually the first to confirm the release of any of the victims and they usually paid a-thank – you visit to him.

His most recent information was on a Christian girl amongst the remaining captives who could soon forcefully get married to a top Commander of the terrorist Group if the Government does not urgently intervene.

It has been revealed that the terrorists are taking a whopping N100m for every released victim.

Rivers House Of Assembly Strips Raymond Dokpesi Of  868 Plots Of Land

0
Raymond Dokpesi

By Charles Igbo

The Rivers State House of Assembly has stripped  Daar Communications of the sprawling plots of land it occupies.  868 plots of land in all, it houses the African Independent Television, AIT,  all its operations, as well as a Radio Station, Ray Power. It is the Headquarters of Daar Communications in the South-south.

The plots of land are located along the NTA road in Obio Akpor Local Government of the State.

Daar Communications is owned by Businessman/Entrepreneur/Politician, Dr Raymond Dokpesi.

In reversing the plots of land to Government, the House said  it acted on the report of a Committee it set up to look into the petitions written by four Communities which insisted that their land was taken over from them.

The Communities which wrote the petition are: Ozuoba, Rumuosi, Rumuekini and Rumookwashi, all in the Obio Akpor LGA.

It is not known what brought about this ugly situation which is likely to pitch Dokpesi against the Governor, Nyesom Wike, but the Chairman of the Committee who is also the Chief Whip of the Assembly informed that the land has been given back to the Rivers State Government.

The Speaker of the House of Assembly, the Rt. Hon. Ikuinyi Awaji-Ibani, has asked Daar Communications to open a fresh negotiation with the Rivers State Government.

Not a few members of the Assembly accused Daar Communications of illegal and wrongful acquisition of the sprawling land

For the records, Daar Communications has been occupying the area for years. And, has had no problems with the Communites which now wrote the petition against its occupation of the vast land.

But not a few people point at politics – the politics of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Both Governor Wike and Dokpesi are not only from the South-south region, but they are of the PDP.

In the Presidential Primary during which former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, defeated Wike, Dokpesi was on the side of Atiku. He was Atiku’s Chief Campaigner, before the Primary, in the South-east and South-south.

Wike has been implacable since his loss of both the Presidential and Vice Presidential tickets. He  swore to deal, ruthlessly, with those he calls his political enemies in the PDP.

Imo: Political Mischief Gone Awry, As Jones Apologises To Uzodinma; Arise TV’s Oseni Set Records Straight

0
Hope Uzodinma

By Charles Igbo

The suffocating political bitterness, hatred and mischief in Imo State went awry these past few days. It had some people regretting the political acid attack on the Governor of the State, Senator Hope Uzodinma.

It had a politician/political commentator and analyst, Jones FCC Onwuasoanya, doing what every commentator, writer, political analyst, and straight politician should do to maintain credibility. He apologised and retracted his earlier devastating comments against Uzodinma. And it had the cerebral Presenter on Arise Television, Rufai Oseni, setting the records straight 24 hours after he had, on Television, lampooned, in strong words, Governor Uzodinma.

Anybody who has been following the bitterness and hatred and propaganda and blackmail and fake stories which rule the politics in Imo, will know that in the State, anything goes as far as politicians are concerned. It is like an animal jungle. All sorts of lies are passed off as the Gospel truth. In the State, the chorus is all is fair in war. So, stories are deliberately fabricated. Statements are deliberately twisted. All for mischief purposes.

The purveyors of such lies hardly care about the consequences and what damage it is doing to their own image, and that of the State.

In the instant case, the two gentlemen, Onwasoanya and Oseni were innocent victims. They were victims of deliberate misinformation meant to incite the Igbo, especially, against Governor Uzodimma.

How It Started

It began with the speech by Uzodinma during the 80th Birthday celebrations of elder statesman, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

The Governor was the host. And had made what he and those present thought was a beautiful speech. A pro-Igbo speech. After extolling the good qualities of the celebrant, he thought he should praise the Igbo. He went all out to do that.

So, he spoke about their unparalleled industry. About their ruggedness. About their ability to survive anywhere. About their love for country. About their penchant for developing anywhere they find themselves. About peaceful nature. About their accommodating nature.

He talked about how the people built Imo Airport. He talked about how it was the Igbo that built and developed Porthacourt. Then, he lamented their status politically. He pointed out that they had been short-changed many times. He pointed out that they were not good negotiators in politics as they were in other things, so people take them for granted. And encouraged them to fight for their rights. It is no privilege, it their right.

But hours later, what the Governor said was turned upside down and inside out. One Correspondent of a national newspaper reported that the Governor had said, and advised the Igbo to forget about the Presidency in 2023, and perhaps, many years to come. He reported the Governor as saying that the Igbo should go and make peace with other Regions before they aspire to the Presidency.

Governor On The Cross

A number of people latched on that false report, and put the Governor on the cross. It is not known if the report was an honest mistake, or if it was deliberately twisted for mischief purposes. Whatever, the later was achieved.

A number of people descended on the Governor and made a mince meat of him and what he supposedly  said. When Arise Television carried and discussed it in their popular Morning Show, it spread like wild fire. One of its Presenters, Oseni, was particularly very hard on the Governor. He remembered the Nigerian Civil War and the number of the Igbo killed. The innocent blood  spilled. The obvious marginalisation of the Igbo for which the people are asking for justice and equity. He put all these together, and passed a judgment on the Governor. He is no good for the Igbo.

His comments went viral on WhatsApp. And, they were celebrated no end within the opposition. A number of comments were passed and written about, and against the Governor.

One of those who commented was Onwuasoanya. In his usual manner, his comments were blunt and punchy and derogatory of the Governors alleged speech.

Putting Out The Facts

But within hours, the Governor’s handlers and many other people present had recovered enough from the unwarranted verbal and written attacks on the Governor, to put out, in hard copy, and audio,  exactly what Uzodinma said.

Arise TV’s Oseni Reacts

The first to react and set the records straight was Oseni.

Within 24 hours after his original outing, he was on the same  Morning Show to set the records. He not only said that the Governor did not say what the Morning Show reacted to the previous day, he was gracious enough to show the Governor as he presented the speech, and allowed the relevant areas which were twisted to be heard and watched by listeners and viewers.

Onwuasoanya Apologises

he next was Onwuasoanya who courageously, completely, retracted his earlier write-up on the subject. He cursed out, almost, those who misinformed him and the general public.

Following is Onwuasoanya’s retraction of the earlier write-up which he, also posted on WhatsApp platforms.

GOVERNOR UZODIMMA SPOKE IN DEFENCE OF NDIGBO AND HER INTERESTS AND NOT AGAINST THEM

“I have taken time to watch what appears to be the complete clip of Governor Uzodimma’s speech at Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu’s birthday reception in Owerri, and I didn’t hear anywhere he either directly stated that ‘Ndigbo should make peace with Nigeria’ nor inferred as much. That speech can actually pass as one of the most Igbo centric speeches made by any Igbo leader in recent times.

“The individual who earlier sent me a cutout clip of the governor purportedly making that derogatory comment is obviously a mischievous character, as he deleted that video as soon as he confirmed that I had watched the video. My efforts at getting him send it back to me were rebuffed with the excuse that he doesn’t want the clip out there, as it is exclusive and it would be easy to identify where it came from.

“It is clear that some mischievous individuals have designed a strategy to hoodwink some of us into sending out false narratives against those they consider their enemies. Unfortunately, I am not one of those who would take up enmity with anyone for another.

“Governor Uzodimma, rather than as a slave, spoke like a freeborn that he is, and courageously, too. He made a convincing case for other Nigerians to reciprocate the love and commitment of Igbos to Nigeria and the Nigerian project. And he couldn’t have said it better. It is disgusting that anyone could want to twist this well-intentioned speech completely out of context, and I daresay, that it is those behind such mischief that are the real enemies of Ndigbo and the real definition of misbegotten slaves. In their case, they might not really be slaves to any ruling Party, but to some frustrated never-do-wells.

“I will not be able to delete the earlier writeup on this matter, because I understand that it has gone beyond my reach, and can no longer be traced or even deleted on some platforms where they are posted, but I wish to take back all the harsh words I deployed in communicating my disappointment with that speech, had it been made, and instead direct them, and even harsher words, to anyone or group of people who is or are behind this mindless misinformation campaign against the governor of Imo State.

“May God bless the Truth.”

Excerpts From Governor Uzodinma’s Speech

“…when we come to celebrate him ( Iwuanyanwu) we also use the auspicious event to discuss the lingering topic of Nigerian unity, particularly as it affects Igbos, I believe it can pass for a mini national conference. And this is more so because the discourse on Igbos and national unity has been recurring from pre-independence days to the present day. It is also a subject that continues to generate intense national interest, controversy and misinterpretations.

“It is not an open secret that in some quarters, Igbos are still held suspect of harbouring a hidden agenda. The unfortunate events of the 60s have not helped matters in this respect

“In my view, therefore, the topic of today’s lecture is both apt and cogent. Given the pedigree of the lecturer, no other but our erudite Chief Nnia Nwodo, I have no doubt that justice will be done to the topic. In the end, I am sure he would have thrown up more and better insights on the matter. More importantly, I believe that the lecture will further enlighten our brethren from the other parts of the country, on the Igbo question. We shall use all available media to ensure the message reaches a wider audience, including those in the Diaspora.

“In this respect, in making my opening remarks, and without pre-empting the lecture, I will begin by recalling that the lecture topic resonates with my latest book, ” Reflections on the Igbo question “, In the book, I set out to showcase the numerous contributions of Ndigbo to national unity while interrogating the challenges they face in their quest for a just, fair and equitable Nigeria.

“Having said that, let me submit that the truth of the matter is that in spite of obvious misinterpretations and misrepresentations, Igbos love Nigeria passionately and the evidence is overwhelming. There is no part of Nigeria, no matter how remote, where you will not find Igbos living happily with their host communities while contributing to the growth and development of the area. I often ask this question: Can a man live in a land he loathes? Can a man feel at home in a land he abhors? Will the gods of a land allow the business of a man to thrive in a land he does not wish well? I believe the answers to these questions are obvious, CAPITAL NOS. You can now fill in the gaps for the Igbos.

:Since 2011, when I was elected to the Senate, I have taken time to explore this topic and the complexities inherent in them. I have had cause not only to interrogate the question of suspicion among the various ethnic groups in Nigeria but also the issues that gave rise to it. This is against the backdrop of the fact that naturally the ordinary Nigerian does not have a problem living and working together for the peace and progress of the country. My findings are contained in my book, which I referred to earlier. The conclusion is that the Igbos love Nigeria, fervently; with all their hearts and all their souls and with all their might as well. However, by an inexplicable irony, the Igbos somehow believes that Nigeria and Nigerians do not reciprocate this love, at least not with the same passion. This is the paradox that has continued to define the Igbo quest for national unity.

“What the Igbos seek from the country is accommodation, not domination. What they seek is acceptance and not rejection. What they seek is friendship and brotherhood, and they are also willing and able to offer the same. There is sufficient and irrevocable evidence from Nigerian history that Igbo leaders have never been found wanting in advocacy, backed by action, for Nigeria’s unity.

Let us briefly examine and refresh some of the issues leading to Nigeria’s Independence in 1960. The NCNC led by our own Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe (Owelle of Onitsha and Zik of Africa) opposed the self -determination motion by Western legislators in 1957. He wanted a united Nigeria and not a fragmented one. If NCNC had allowed that motion to sail through, we wouldn’t have had what is today called Nigeria both in identity and geography. By patiently waiting for the North to be ready, NCNC led by a patriotic Igbo man saved the day.

“Again, during the Western Nigerian crisis in the early days of independence, it fell on Azikiwe and other nationalists to provide the stability needed for Nigeria to remain together.

Even before that, Azikiwe had through sheer patriotic zeal, conceded to Alhaji Tafawa Balewa of NPC when it came to the formation of the National Government in 1959. Because the NPC would not muster enough majorities to single-handedly form the government, it turned to Zik’s NCNC for support. Zik could have turned to AG to form the government and become the Prime Minister, but he did not. Instead, he accepted NPC’s proposal which saw him playing a secondary role as the ceremonial President – instead of being the Prime Minister. This was because Zik reasoned correctly that a national government of only the South was a recipe for disintegration. That was a great sacrifice for national cohesion. That was nationalism at its peak.

Deriving from my earlier submission that you cannot live in a land that you don’t love, let me recall that long before independence, Igbos had settled in every part of Nigeria, North, South West and South. Igbos practically built Port – Harcourt, even if it pleases some people to vainly try to rewrite history. Prominent Igbos like the same Nnamdi Azikiwe, Ikemba Odumegwu Ojukwu, General Ike Nwachukwu and a lot of others were born in the North, by their parents who settled there as their home. I don’t want to mention Lagos and the developmental roles Igbos have played and continue to play there.

“But suffice it to say that there exist many Igbos in Lagos whose first language is Yoruba because they have accepted that place as their home.

“Indeed, throughout the 774 Local Government Areas of the country, from Zungeru to Owo and from Akwanga to Ahoada, Igbos are found there in their numbers. In most cases, after the indigenous population, the second largest ethnic group in any city outside Igboland are Igbos. What other evidence do we need to authenticate our Nigerianess and our faith in the country called Nigeria?

“As I said earlier, there is no part of Nigeria today, even the remotest parts that you won’t find Igbos in large numbers engaged in commerce and sundry economic activities, thereby contributing to the growth of the nation, adding value to the economy of the states they reside in and blending with their hosts. So, if the demographic spread is a good index for measuring the confidence of ethnic nationalities in a united Nigeria, and it is, then Ndigbo will most likely rank as the number one ethnic nationality that has unfettered confidence in a united Nigeria. This is for the simple commonsensical reason that no man will make a home out of the land that he does not love or wish well.

“In my book, “Reflections on the Igbo Question”, I categorically declared that the Igbo question is actually the story of the Igbo in project Nigeria and their patriotic and fervent desire for a country that offers them an unfettered space for self-actualization and identity as well. But, in another way, it means that Ndigbo have always had an unflinching faith in the unity of Nigeria because they believe that the vast geographical territory and resources and opportunities Nigeria offers are capable of providing that space.

“Actually, the question that ought to dominate the national space is not whether the Igbos loves Nigeria or for that matter, whether they believe in a United Nigeria, but whether they have been offered that deserved and desired accommodation.

“While I would rather that we focus on the future, it is also necessary for us to reflect on what has kept the Igbo question recurring. In my book as mentioned earlier, I traced our current travails to the civil war.

“I recalled how Igbos were at the commanding heights of the military, academia, sports and what have you, before the outbreak of the war. However, by an unsavoury twist of fate, playing out with the vicissitudes of several other factors, including fall outs from conspiracies and counter conspiracies, Igbos became victims of national intrigues and socio-economic brutalization. This is my own summary of the events leading to the civil war and its aftermath.

“But, in spite of the crushing effects of the civil war and the hostile official policies that followed, Igbos, like the biblical dry bones, managed to rise again. Yes, the Igbos rose from the ashes of the civil war to embrace Nigeria again, spreading all over her space, to live and let’s live.

“In fact, the resurgence of the Igbo man after those harsh policies more than anything espoused the courageous and resilient spirit of the race. They derive strength from affliction and blossom in an environment considered hostile and unconducive.

“With a history of afflictions resulting from an ill-conceived war, the strong desire of Ndigbo for a Nigeria of their dream did not wane. In spite of the brutality and huge losses they experienced, Igbos returned to Nigeria, immediately after the war and embraced everyone as though nothing happened. What does that tell us? It is a confirmation of the indispensable fact that Igbos do not intend to leave. They fully recognise that Nigeria is the only country they have and they are not going anywhere, just as they will not allow any person or groups of persons to push them out of the country they call their own.

:However, I must admit that as a race we have our flaws. When we reflect on where the rain started beating us, we will come to the inevitable conclusion that we have made some mistakes, more from the heart than from the head. Because, we trust easily; because we are quick to make friends, etc. But, the greatest of all is that we are weak in negotiations. We are often not as diplomatic as we ought to be. Perhaps our greatest bane is the “Nzogbu Nzogbu, Enyimba” spirit in all of us. This spirit probably deludes us into believing that we can do it all alone or into hoping that someday “manna” will fall from heaven and give us the day.

“In the book already referred to, I made it clear that our desire for a Nigerian President of Igbo extraction can only be accomplished through negotiated agreements as no one ethnic group can produce the president of Nigeria without the support of the other ethnic groups. Sadly, because we appear deficient in negotiation skills, we have not made much headway in this regard. Our poor outing in the last party primaries of the two major political parties speaks volumes in this regard. The apparent lack of understanding, cooperation or unity amongst the candidates from the South-East may also have played a role in the poor outing.

“This contrasts with what happened in 1992, when the man we are celebrating today, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, flew the flag of Ndigbo to contest the presidential primaries of the National Republican Convention (UNCP). I felt proud as an Igbo man as I watched him transverse the various parts of Nigeria canvassing votes and marshalling his plans for the country. Although we had other Igbos who showed interest, Chief Iwuanyanwu was remarkable because he showed us the way to pursue our aspirations in the project Nigeria.

:The foregoing explains why I am both excited and encouraged that at 80, Chief Iwuanyanwu has continued to seek answers to the Igbo question through his active participation in the affairs of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, of which he is a founding member. Without a doubt, Chief Iwuanyanwu has always defended the legitimate quest by Ndigbo to have a fair deal in Nigeria.

“As elders who have seen the devastating and debilitating effects of war, we would never subscribe to violence as a means of getting justice and equity. When we watch on our TV sets the gory pictures emanating from Ukraine and Russia; when we see emaciating children in Syria and Yemen; when we behold the carcasses of war in South Sudan, Iraq and Libya, nobody will need anybody to tell us that peace is preferable to war and that negotiation is always better than violence. That is why I keep advising our youths to eschew violence and toe the path of peace. Those promoting violence in whatever form as a means of getting what we desire are not helping the Igbo course. Like I have always said, Ndigbo needs Nigeria just as Nigeria needs us. In that context, therefore, it is our responsibility to explore more peaceful and democratic means of resolving the challenges associated with our clamour for justice and equity.

“Ladies and gentlemen, as we ponder on the Igbo Question, let me make it clear, that we can only reap what we plant. When we plant peace and love as we are currently doing across Nigeria, we shall find that which we earnestly seek. We should take opportunities of the vast space called Nigeria to unleash our God-given talents for the attainment of our goals. What we seek may be delayed, but it can never be denied, for as long as we come to equity with clean hands.”

Imo State will, for the second time in many weeks, play host to President Muhammadu Buhari

The President will visit the State on Monday, September 13, 2022.

While in the State, President Buhari will commission a number of signature projects built by Governor Hope Uzodimma rents the air.

The Executive Council of Imo State confirmed, after its weekly meeting, that President Buhari will on Tuesday September 13, 2022 pay a one day visit to Imo to commission two signature road projects of the 3-R administration as well as the newly reconstructed Imo State House of Assembly Complex.

Rising from the meeting, Wednesday, presided over by Governor Uzodimma, the Hon Commissioner for Information and Strategy,  Declan Mbadiwe Emelumba who confirmed Mr. President’s  second visit to Imo said Imo people residing at all the nooks and crannies of Imo State cannot wait to receive their beloved President.

The two critical road projects slated for Mr. President’s commissioning are the 36 kilometre dualized Owerri/Orlu road and the first phase of the dualised 53 kilometre Owerri/Okigwe Road.

Emelumba said that “the two roads qualify as one the best roads in Nigeria and even anywhere in the world” and that “the two roads have made a difference in the economic development and improvement of the State cutting across over seven Local Governments.”

Supported at the briefing by the Hon. Commissioners for Works, Barr. Ralph Nwosu; Housing,  Lady Love Ineh; the Chief Political Adviser and Head Political Bureau,  Barr. Enyinna Onuegbu and the Chief Press Secretary/Media Adviser to the Governor, Oguwike Nwachuku, Emelumba explained that “Mr. President will also commission the rebuilt Imo State House of Assembly Complex.”

Emelumba said: “The Assembly  Complex has been re-equipped and re-furbished with state of the art equipment/gadgets and furniture that have brought it to a world class standard and in fact, the best in Nigeria today.”

In another development, the Commissioner informed that the Executive Council has discovered to its chagrin;  that a new fraud has quietly crept back into the automation process in the public service of the State whereby personnel who are either retired or dead and are no longer working, still get payrolled for salaries every month.

To forestall the fraud, the Exco has directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to immediately carry out staff audit to ascertain the appropriate people that are supposed to receive salaries and ensure all leakages are plugged.

In addition, the Exco directed that henceforth the payroll of Civil Servants for salaries and emoluments must now be sent to MDAs for verification and confirmation before they are paid.

Confirming the readiness of the two dualized roads for commissioning by Mr. President, the Hon. Commissioner for Works, Barr. Ralph Nwosu explained: “The roads are ready. The states of the road infrastructure are all in place and the State is good to go.”

At the commencement of the day’s Executive Council Meeting Governor Uzodimma performed the swearing-in ceremony of a Commissioner designate,  Chief Cosmas Nwabueze Maduba who was unavoidably absent on August 17, 2022,  the day his colleagues were sworn-in.
