IBB Backs Military Action Against Bandits

Ibrahim Babangida - IBB

By Ayodele Oni

Former Military Head of State, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), has called for a decisive military response against armed groups terrorising communities nationwide.

Babangida advised the Federal Government to disregard any appeals for surrender from bandits operating in different parts of the country, insisting that the criminals must first be completely dealt with.

Babangida made his position known in a post on his verified X handle, formerly Twitter, where he called for a decisive military response against armed groups terrorising communities nationwide.

According to the former military leader, security agencies should prioritise the full neutralization of bandits before considering dialogue or negotiations of any kind.

He maintained that accepting surrender prematurely could undermine efforts to end insecurity.

“While the bandits are pleading for surrender, we must not accept their plea until every one of them is neutralised and eliminated,” Babangida wrote.

He added that once this is achieved, individuals he described as negotiators and sympathisers, including Sheikh Ahmad Gumi and others, should be invited for thorough questioning by the authorities.

The statement has since triggered widespread reactions on social media, with Nigerians expressing divergent views on the former leader’s hardline stance.

Some users threw their weight behind Babangida’s comments. A social media user identified as Dr. Jay supported the call, suggesting that those perceived as sympathisers should already be facing scrutiny by security agencies.

Others, however, raised concerns about shifting public sentiments. Another commenter, Phyno, argued that Nigerians often change opinions quickly, warning against sudden reversals in public support for controversial figures.

Also reacting, Ikechukwu described Babangida’s position as timely, stressing that it should be implemented strictly to achieve lasting security.

“No Foreign Power Can Enforce Peace In Nigeria” – Shehu Sani On US Airstrike In Nigeria

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani has stated that no foreign power can enforce peace in Nigeria in his reacted to reports that the United States military carried out “precision hits on terrorist targets in Nigeria by air strikes.”

The Kaduna former Senator remarked that “Again, the ultimate security and peace in our country lies with ourselves and not with the US or any foreign power. They can complimentarily or unilaterally strike, but they can’t eternally fight our battles.”

The Nigerian government had officially confirmed that the United States military carried out “precision hits on terrorist targets in Nigeria by air strikes.”

This confirmation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs comes shortly “after US President Donald Trump announced the operation” directed at Islamic State militants located in the country’s northwestern region.

“Nigerian authorities remain engaged in structured security cooperation with international partners, including the United States of America, in addressing the persistent threat of terrorism and violent extremism,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement released early on Friday.

“This has led to precision hits on terrorist targets in Nigeria by air strikes,” in the country’s northwest, it added.

Sani took to X to react to the US strikes in Nigeria. He wrote : “If actually, the military strikes against the terrorists targets in the North Western part of Nigeria were a joint operation with the ‘Nigerian Authorities’ as posted by the US AFRICOM on their verified X handle, then it’s a conscionable action.

“Terrorists have become cancerous cells in our part of the country. They live by the sword. The narrative that the evil terrorists only targets one faith, remains absolutely false and misleading.

Sanwo-Olu Orders Demolition Of 27-Storey GNI Building

The 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) House on Lagos Island engulfed by fire on Wednesday will be demolished. The edifice was constructed in 1968.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu who visited the scene of the inferno at Martin’s street, on Thursday, said once the raging fire at the building is fully extinguished, it will be demolished.

Sanwo-Olu disclosed that a committee headed by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Gbenga Oyerinde, had been constituted to determine the safest and quickest method of bringing down the structure within a few days.

According to the governor, preliminary investigations revealed that the building, which was originally designed for office use, had been converted into a warehouse, with several floors used for the storage of highly combustible materials.

He said the fire reportedly started from the fourth and fifth floors before spreading rapidly to the upper levels late on Wednesday night.

The Nation quoted the governor as saying that “This building has had fire incidents in the past. Unfortunately, it was being used as a warehouse, with inflammable materials stored across multiple floors, which made firefighting extremely difficult.”

He explained that although first responders arrived early and deployed aerial ladder equipment, the intensity of the fire escalated around 8pm due to the nature of materials stored inside the building.

The governor confirmed that no fatalities had been recorded, adding that between seven and 10 people sustained injuries and were conveyed to hospitals by ambulances operated by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

He also noted that parts of the structure had already suffered partial collapse, making demolition inevitable once the fire is completely subdued.

Sanwo-Olu renewed calls for heightened fire safety awareness during the dry season, particularly between December and February, when harmattan conditions heighten fire risks.

“People must stop storing highly inflammable materials in residential and office buildings, especially in densely populated market areas. We will intensify advocacy and enforcement to prevent a repeat of this,” he said.

Meanwhile, the operational commander of the Federal Fire Service in Lagos, Musa Emmanuel, said firefighters were still battling the blaze, noting that the close proximity of surrounding buildings and the unknown contents of the affected structures had complicated suppression efforts.

According to him, no injuries or loss of life had been recorded so far, adding that the cause of the fire would only be determined after the site is secured.

More than 10 buildings were affected by the fire, with at least two severely damaged and several others partially impacted.

Emergency responders from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Fire Service and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) are currently on ground managing the incident.

US Lacks Moral Authority To Lead War Against Terrorism In Nigeria – Sheikh Gumi

By Ayodele Oni

Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has insisted that the United States,(US), lacks the moral authority to lead war against terrorism in Nigeria.

He has therefore called on the Federal Government to immediately halt all military cooperation with the United States following reported US airstrike.

The United States had launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS Terrorist Scum in Northwest Nigeria, who have been targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians, at levels not seen for many years, and even in centuries!

US Airstrike in Nigeria

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which confirmed the airstrikes by the US Military, said it “engaged in structured security cooperation with international partners, including the United States of America in addressing the persistent threat of terrorism and violent extremism.”

Gumi who made the call in a statement posted on his Facebook page on Friday, warned that America’s involvement could worsen Nigeria’s security challenges and undermine national sovereignty.

He pointed out that while Islam permits the fight against terrorism, such actions should only be carried out by what he described as “clean hands,” arguing that the United States lacks the moral authority to lead such efforts because of its global military record.

According to the Cleric, Nigeria made a mistake by allowing foreign powers to play a role in its counter terrorism operations, insisting that “terrorists do not truly fight terrorists” and that such interventions often result in civilian casualties and hidden political motives.

Gumi cautioned that allowing Nigeria to become a theatre of war would attract anti-US forces into the country, further destabilising it.

He also warned that US involvement, particularly under claims of protecting Christians, could polarise the country along religious lines.

The cleric further argued that airstrikes alone cannot defeat terrorism, stressing that effective counter terrorism requires strong ground operations, which he said Nigeria has enough personnel to carry out if properly organised.

“This is the mistake Nigeria has made. Terrorists don’t fight terrorists in truth; they may only kill innocent people and have ulterior motives behind the drama of fighting ‘terror’.

“As a principle, no nation should allow its land to be a theatre of war. And no nation should allow its neighbors to be their enemies.

“If Nigeria wants military assistance, China, Turkey, and Pakistan can do the job effectively,” part of his statement read.

US Africa Command says it conducted the attack

Following the deadly and devastating airstrikes by the United States of America’s Military on ISIS Terrorists in Sokoto, North West, Nigeria, its Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, has thanked the Nigerian Government for its support and cooperation.

In a post on his X page, Hegseth said he was “grateful for Nigerian Government’s support and cooperation.

He wrote: “The President was clear last month. The killing of innocent Christians in Nigeria (and elsewhere) must end.

“The @DeptofWar is always ready, so ISIS found out tonight – on Christmas.

“Grateful for Nigerian Government support & cooperation. Merry Christmas.”

In another post on X the US Africa Command confirmed it carried out a strike in Sokoto State which killed multiple terrorists.

It wrote: “At the direction of the President of the President of the United States and Secretary of War, and in coordination with Nigerian authorities, US Africa Command conducted strikes against ISIS on Dec.25, 2025, in Sokoto State.”

Recall that suspected terrorists had, on Christmas day, bombed a Mosque in Maiduguri while Muslim faithful were in prayer. Five people were killed while 35 others were injured.

The Federal Government had vowed to get at the perpetrators.

OPINION: What’s the Cost of a Merry Christmas?

Mr Azu Ishiekwene

By Azu Ishiekwene

I intended to write about something else, but changed my mind halfway through. Apart from making New Year’s resolutions a habit, which nearly half of adult Americans engage in, another common feature of this time of year in many parts of the world is making predictions.

It’s as hazardous as knowing a baby’s sex before birth used to be before the 20th century. But somehow, I’ve managed to make yearly forecasts over the last five years without eating too many humble pies.

Before retiring the idea, I thought about something different, as you wind down what has been, for the most part, an extraordinarily tumultuous year, thanks to the Wrecking-Ball-In-Chief, US President Donald J. Trump. With the help of my personal assistant, Julius Ogar, I have collected some of my unusual articles this year for your Christmas pleasure. Among his top five picks was “Understanding the Flight Announcer,” an article that tried to decipher the babble that passes for flight announcements at many Nigerian airports.

A flight announcement

I hope your experience has been different this Christmas, and that despite chaotic flight delays, you still managed to hear the endless announcements above the din in crowded passenger lounges. When I wrote the piece in June, I was at the Asaba Airport in Southern Nigeria, waiting to board a flight to Abuja, the country’s capital.

After what I thought was my mind playing tricks on me, I approached the desk to confirm whether the announcer had indeed said “Accra” instead of Abuja, where I was going. The second announcement in a fake Oyinbo accent was worse: “This is a boreding announcement on Flight PA74862 from Hum, Hum, Hum, to Ham, Ham, Ham…all persongers on this flight should phulease proceed to the boreding gate…a phust departure call phulease…”

Apart from recommending tools like PAXGuide to monitor announcements and improve announcer performance, I also suggested that announcements could be made in Pidgin, where necessary, to reduce passenger misery.

Sankara-wannabe

The second pick was the article entitled “How to Crown an Impostor.” It was a piece about how the military leader of Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Traore, has become something of a rock star. I don’t know why my assistant thought it was funny, but I hope he has no plans to go near that West African country anytime soon.

Traore, a Sankara-wannabe, has enjoyed more generosity than any other recent coup plotter in the region, courtesy of TikTokers and their Russian Wagner allies, who have crowned him “The People’s Captain.” As I remarked in the piece, “Traorephytes even invent videos of Rihanna and R Kelly (imprisoned since 2021) serenading the Burkinabe leader with hit songs!”

TikTok fantasy

It’s hard to see what Traore has done outside the make-belief world of TikTokers and the fantasy of hordes of young people disenchanted by poor governance in that country, and across the continent. But they swear by every avatar that he’s working. As a gesture of the season, if Traore has a sense of humour, it might not be a bad idea to frame him in a Santa Claus cap, the way Trump framed himself as a Pope, and plant a Christmas song in his mouth.

Here was how the piece on Traore ended: “For three years, Traore’s stock has risen amid algorithmic populism expressed in languages he neither understands nor speaks, with minimal institutional reforms, if any, and no prospects or commitment to return the country to civilian rule.

“His rhetoric,” The Africa Report said, “still falls short of real, measurable improvements in security and civic freedoms. There’s a gap between his message and the reality on the ground, something that will ultimately test his legitimacy and legacy.”

A life coach

The third piece, “Aparutu and His Life Coach,” was personal. It was a tribute written in honour of my mentor, Sir Ademola Osinubi, who turned 70 in October. The thing about it that resonates at Christmas is how small encounters can change our lives, illustrated in biblical stories like the one of curiosity leading the wise men from the East, for example.

When I first met Osinubi 40 years ago, I was only following my professional vistas, unsure where they would lead. I was introduced to Osinubi by the Editor at the time, Alhaji Najeem Jimoh. My encounter with Osinubi and a few others named in that article fostered my career for over two decades.

The improbable legend of something good out of Nazareth was, in my case, made possible by someone willing to take a chance on me, an aparutu, leading me and indeed many who crossed his path later in life by the force of his example.

Power’s proper job

“When Are You Going to Get a Proper Job?” That was the title of the fourth piece that my assistant selected. It’s the title of a book that chronicles the 60 years in journalism by my friend, Jonathan Power, 83. I’ve known Power for over 25 years, and it came as a big surprise that many years after he gave himself to writing, his father still didn’t think writing was “a proper job.”

As you can imagine, for many parents of Power’s day, the only “proper jobs were law, engineering, and medicine.” Being one of Europe’s most informed and syndicated journalists didn’t matter. Nor did it matter that journalism had taken Power far and wide and acquainted him with some of the world’s most influential and powerful people.

In the end, it doesn’t matter so much what people, including our parents, think we should have been. Their wishes come from a good place, but life is lived forward. And Power might agree that, even though he had made some difficult choices, especially in his love life, being a journalist was not one of them.

At the end of the year, we are faced with the same conundrum as Power faced when he was contemplating his love life: “If only I had been more lucky, wise, sensible…” But life is lived forward.

African pope

My assistant’s fifth choiceis “Waiting for an African Pope.” I don’t know why he chose this. As far as wishes go, this prospect exists in the movies, such as Peter Straughan’s The Conclave.

But Arinze Cardinal, a character in that movie, is only a fantasy. My article on an African pope in April fizzled in black smoke, though not a few would later say that the emergence of Pope Francis, an American, with a strong affinity for the poor and oppressed around the world, is as good as it gets in terms of papal equity.

Obi as Atiku’s lunch

As my special Christmas bonus, I’m taking the liberty of this last conversation of the year to add a sixth article I wrote in July, entitled “Peter Obi’s Dangerous Game.”

In that article, I warned that the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party seemed determined to commit political suicide first by his indecision about where to go next, and second, by leaning toward the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party that has been prepared for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

It’s almost certain that he would go there, regardless. Insiders have informed me that the groundwork has been laid and that when the time comes, Atiku and others will support Obi’s ambition. I laugh. Atiku is like a lion wearing the cap of Santa Claus and offering a gift box wrapped in garlands, swag and tinsel. Obi and his ambition would soon be lunch.

A Merry Christmas shouldn’t cost so much!

Happy New Year!

Gbajabiamila Remains CoS To President Tinubu – Presidency

Femi Gbajabiamila

By Ayodele Oni

The presidency has clarified that President Bola Tinubu has not replaced his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.

It added that the insinuations that the Chief of Staff to President  Tinubu, Gbajabiamila, has been replaced by Hakeem Muri-Okunola, Principal Private Secretary is untrue.

In a statement on Thursday,  the Presidential Spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, said “a viral falsehood circulating on social media suggesting that President Tinubu has replaced his Chief of Staff, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, with his Principal Private Secretary, Hakeem Muri-Okunola” is false.

“There is absolutely no truth to this story. We advise Nigerians to disregard it entirely,” he explained.

“The Chief of Staff remains in his position. The Principal Private Secretary likewise remains in his role. Hakeem Muri-Okunola has not replaced Femi Gbajabiamila as Chief of Staff.

“The viral claim is a fabrication by mischievous purveyors of fake news whose sole aim is to create disharmony within the government.

“We reiterate that news media should always verify their information before publishing or sharing on social media,” he added.

The viral report has claimed that Gbajabiamila has fallen out with President Tinubu and hence his replacement.

Gbajabiamila, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, became the President’s Chief of Staff in assumption of office and has been described as one of the cabals in the presidency.

Tanker Explosion On Lagos – Badagry Expressway Claims Two Lives

Tanker Explosion On Lagos- Badagry Expressway

By Akinwale Kasali

It is a Black Christmas for the families of the two persons who lost their lives in a diesel tanker explosion early Thursday along the Badagry Expressway, Lagos.

It was gathered from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, that the incident occurred at the Oto-Ijanikin axis near Lagos State University of Education, while a truck carrying diesel reportedly lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle, causing it to crash and ignite.

LASTMA Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed this in a statement posted on the agency’s X page on Thursday.

The statement read, “Preliminary findings from security investigations indicate that the unfortunate incident was precipitated by excessive speed, as the tanker driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while attempting to overtake another road user.

“The vehicle subsequently crashed and erupted into a raging inferno, tragically trapping and claiming the lives of the driver and an adult female occupant.

“LASTMA personnel who were actively monitoring and managing vehicular movement within the corridor responded with remarkable alacrity and professionalism.”

The LASTMA officials stated that it has quickly secured and cordoned off the affected stretch to prevent secondary accidents.

LASTMA also notified the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (Ojo Unit), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and Ijanikin Police Division for emergency response and security reinforcement.

In a critical intervention, LASTMA officers prevented members of the public from attempting to scoop spilt diesel from the scene—a dangerous act that could have triggered further explosions and fatalities.

Following the containment of the fire, the severely burnt tanker was evacuated to avoid additional traffic hazards, while the remains of the deceased were removed by the FRSC.

Olalekan Bakare-Oki, LASTMA General Manager, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as “deeply painful and entirely avoidable,” and extended condolences to the families of the victims.

He emphasised the importance of road safety, urging tanker and articulated vehicle drivers to exercise caution, observe speed limits, and comply with traffic regulations.

Bakare-Oki also warned the public against the hazardous practice of collecting spilt petroleum products from accident sites.

“The Authority remains steadfast in its commitment to public safety and the sanctity of human life,” Bakare-Oki said.

“Why We Allowed US Military To Bomb Terrorists In Nigeria” –  FG

The Nigerian Government has confirmed that the United States Military, in the uncivilized hours of Friday, carried out airstrikes on Nigerian soil.

The airstrikes were carried out against ISIS Terrorists in the North-west who have made life hell on earth for innocent citizens.

In a statement by Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Friday morning which confirmed the airstrikes by the US Military, the Nigerian Government said it “engaged in structured security cooperation with international partners, including the United States of America in addressing the persistent threat of terrorism and violent extremism.”

This, the Nigerian Government said, “has led to precision hits on terrorist targets in Nigeria by air strikes in the North West.”

Following is the full test of the statement by the Nigerian Government on the airstrikes.

“Nigeria-United States Security Cooperation and Intelligence Collaboration hits at terrorists targets in Nigeria.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria confirms that Nigerian authorities remain engaged in structured security cooperation with international partners, including the United States of America, in addressing the persistent threat of terrorism and violent extremism. This has led to precision hits on terrorist targets in Nigeria by air strikes in the North West.

“In line with established international practice and bilateral understandings, this cooperation includes the exchange of intelligence, strategic coordination, and other forms of support consistent with international law, mutual respect for sovereignty, and shared commitments to regional and global security.

“Nigeria reiterates that all counter-terrorism efforts are guided by the primacy of protecting civilian lives, safeguarding national unity, and upholding the rights and dignity of all citizens, irrespective of faith and ethnicity.  Terrorist violence in any form, whether directed at Christians, Muslims, or other communities remains an affront to Nigeria’s values and international peace and security.

“The Federal Government continues to work closely with its partners through established diplomatic and security channels to weaken terrorists networks, disrupt their financing and logistics, and prevent cross-border threats, while strengthening Nigeria’s own security institution and intelligence capabilities.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to engage relevant partners and keep the public informed through appropriate official channels.”

There has, however, been no response from President Bola Tinubu who is spending the Christmas vacation in his home State, Lagos.

US Bombs ISIS Terrorists In Northwest Nigeria …Trump Hails American Power, Military

US Bombs ISIS Terrorists In Northwest Nigeria

Trump: “Merry Christmas to all, including the dead terrorists.”

President Donald Trump of the United States of America has gleefully announced that his country’s Armed Forces has carried out airstrikes in Nigeria’s North-west.

In a post on his social media platform, Trump described the strike which was carried out early Friday, Nigerian time, as “powerful and deadly”.

He said the airstrikes were targeted against extremist fighters who he accused of slaughtering “primarily, innocent Christians”

Praising the US Military for a swift, decisive and successful operation, President Trump wished all a Merry Christmas  “including the dead terrorists”, and promised that ” there will be more (dead terrorists) if their slaughter of Christians continues.”

Following is the full text of President Trump’s post.

“Tonight, at my direction as Commander-in- Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS Terrorist Scum in Northwest Nigeria, who have been targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians, at levels not seen for many years, and even in centuries! I have previously warned these terrorists that if they did not stop the slaughtering of Christians, there would be hell to pay, and tonight, there was.  The Department of War executed numerous perfect strikes, as only the United States is capable of doing. Under my leadership, our country will not allow Radical Islamic Terrorism to prosper. May God bless our Military, and MERRY CHRISTMAS to all, including the dead Terrorists, of which there will be more if their slaughter of Christians continues.

DONALD J. TRUMP

PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”

The Nigerian Government, in a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has confirmed the airstrikes and said it was: “In line with international practice and bilateral understandings” which include “the exchange of intelligence, strategic coordination and other forms of support consistent with international law, mutual respect for sovereignty, and shared commitments to regional and global security”

Governor officials of Nigeria and the United States have been meeting since President Trump accused the Federal Government of turning a blind eye to alleged genocide against Nigerian Christians. Trump promised “a swift and sweet attack with guns ablazing” to take out the terrorists and protect Christians. The Nigerian Government vehemently rejected the allegation of genocide against Christians and said both religions  – Christians and Muslims – are victims of terrorist  attacks.

On Christmas night, Trump fulfilled his promise of a swift attack on terrorists in the North-west of Nigeria.
