Nigeria Decides: Tinubu Is Empty – Governor Emmanuel

By Akinwale Kasali

Governor Emmanuel Udom of Akwa Ibom State has taken a swipe at the All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying that he has nothing to offer Nigerians, which is why he abuses people.

Udom said that he would rather allow peace to reign than exchanging words with a Presidential Candidate that has nothing to bring to the table for Nigerians.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chieftain said that all the insults, tantrums and jibes thrown at him by Tinubu holds no water, as he sees him as a man who has nothing to offer.

He made this assertion at the Government House, Uyo , while inaugurating newly appointed Permanent Secretaries, Chairmen and Members of Boards and Commissions, as well as a Transition Committee to ensure the smooth transition of power to the next administration.

Tinubu, former Lagos State Governor had during his rally in Uyo on Monday, reportedly said, “Akwa Ibom, that boy wey bring Atiku here, wey de call himself Governor, tell him enough is enough! He lives in my backyard in Lagos, If no be say we be one, I would have driven him home. You see that mansion he is living, I would just use lizards, pigeons and scorpions to put him inside.“

Responding to Tinubu’s speech, Udom said, “for the country to remain in peace, one party must ‘play saint’ and that is why he would refrain from replying Tinubu.

Speaking further, the Chairman of the PDP presidential campaigns said, “I also go to other states, and if you watch our campaigns, my principal (Atiku Abubakar) has never spoken about any Governor, he has never spoken openly about Asiwaju before.”

He added that it was unfortunate that Tinubu, who was granted state-owned facilities such as the airport, security, stadium, and a good atmosphere to come in and sell his manifesto, ended up coming to insult the integrity of over 7.9 million Akwa Ibom people.

He  wondered if it is possible for any Akwa Ibomite to go to Lagos that Tinubu stays or the actual state that he hails from, to insult Tinubu in like manner and still be allowed to safely return home, “but here our people at the stadium including some state governors just laughed and applauded him.”

“What makes him think he will govern Nigeria? If I reply him now, people will call me and say, haba oga you are not like that. But I will reply him one day. There is nothing like ‘emilokan’ (it is my turn) here, Nigeria is in God’s hands.”

He maintained further that despite being the highest revenue contributor to the federation account, Akwa Ibom State has not gotten a single kilometre of road from the APC-led Federal Government for nearly 8 years adding that the poor response from the Federal Government also caused the delayed commencement of the seaport in the state.

Supreme Court Annuls Taraba Guber APC Primaries

Emmanuel Bwacha

By Uche Mbah

In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court, Wednesday, set aside the judgment of the Yola Appeal Court on the Governorship Primary election held by the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Taraba State, which produced Senator Emmanuel Bwacha as its flag-bearer.

The five-member panel of Justices voided the judgement after allowing an appeal by one of the contestants, David Kente.

Justice Adamu Jauro read the lead judgement.

The Court ruled that the defendant did not show evidence that the primary was conducted in line with relevant electoral laws and the 1999 constitution (as amended ), thereby faulting the ruling of the lower Court in Jalingo which declared Bawa nominated. It instead upheld the ruling of the High Court, which disagreed with the result of the Primaries. The lower Court had ordered a 14 day period for new primaries to be held. It also bared Bwacha from parading himself as the authentic candidate, ordering the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from recognizing him as the candidate.

Consequently, in resolving the issues in favour of the appellant, the Apex Court said:

“In conclusion, we hold that there was no valid gubernatorial primary election conducted by the APC in Taraba state.

“The judgement of the court below is hereby set aside. Earlier decision of the trial Court is affirmed. This appeal is allowed”.

2023: US Government Says It Has No Preferred Candidate

Mary Beth Leonard

By Akinwale Kasali

The United State  Government has disclosed that it has no preferred Candidate in the forthcoming 2023 Presidential Election.

It however reiterated its commitment to a transparent, credible, free and fair election that would reflect the voice of the electorates.

The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard said that its Government is bent on seeing Nigeria hold a successful election that is transparent in which the will of the people is sacrosanct.

Leonard declared the country would not influence or favour any candidate vying for the topmost position.

She made this disclosure during a one-day multi-stakeholders dialogue titled, ‘Nigeria’s 2023 Elections: Fostering Youth action for peace and stability’, in Abuja on Wednesday, February 1, 2023. She stated that the elections presented an opportunity for Nigeria to solidify its place as a democratic leader in Africa.

The programme, held in collaboration with the National Orientation Agency and Building Blocks for Peace Foundation, was to scale up conversations to ensure inclusivity.

She said, “First, let me start by sharing with you as I’ve shared with other Nigerian groups, my government’s view on the upcoming elections in Nigeria. The United States supports transparent and credible elections that reflect the will of the people in a process that is conducted peacefully.

“The 2023 elections are a pivotal opportunity for Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country and its largest economy, to solidify its place as a democratic leader in Africa. Elections are the foundation of democracy and the basis for the legitimate transfer of power.

“We favour no candidate. We favour only an open, transparent and peaceful electoral process.”

Speaking further, Leonard stated the US had providedj $25 million as part of elections-related support to Nigeria, while expressing confidence in the electoral umpire to conduct credible and transparent elections.

“Through USAID, the US is providing $25 million in elections-related support to Nigeria for the 2023 election cycle.

“The United States has full confidence in INEC and its ability to organise and conduct credible and transparent elections.

“We saw INEC’s capabilities on display during the success of the recent off-cycle elections in Ekiti and Osun states and we look forward to seeing that success extended nationwide during the February and March general elections.”

Continuing, she stressed her resolve to place visa restrictions on individuals who undermine the electoral process.

“Individuals who undermine the democratic process in any way through intimidation and violence may be found ineligible for visas to travel to the United States.

“We took steps in the past to impose US visa restrictions against anyone complicit in undermining the electoral process. And in fact, Secretary of State Blinken announced just last week that we’re imposing sanctions to pass such behaviours.

“We will civilly deny or cancel visas for those who try to undermine the upcoming elections. These records are confidential so we won’t be able to announce the identities of those subject to the sanctions but I can tell you that I am fully aware of people who travelled to the US and whose visas were blocked,” she added.

No Known Anti Tinubu Forces In Presidency – FG Tackles El-Rufai

Lai Mohammed

By Ayodele Oni

The Minister of information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has explained that the position of President Mohammadu Buhari on this month’s election is to ensure free and credible conduct.

The Minister, while reacting to insinuation that some personalities in the Presidency are working against the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Bola Tinubu, said the statement is far from the truth.

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State had alleged that some “elements” in the Presidential Villa were working against the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mallam el-Rufai, who did not mention name(s) made the shocking claim during a live appearance on Channels Television’s “Sunrise Daily” on Wednesday.

But the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, while addressing State House Correspondents at a briefing after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari earlier in the day, debunked the claim.

Mohammed stated the President’s position is that his administration would only focus on ensuring a free fair and credible elections and not favour or cause anyone to be at a disadvantage.

He further contended that if there was anyone working against any candidate, it was not officially known or verifiable.

In the question-and-answer session, the information minister equally reacted to ratings by Transparency International released on Tuesday.

He underscored the fact that the government had very impressive records based on achievements by the EFCC and the ICPC, etc. and was therefore not bothered about the ratings.

He noted that the administration’s fight against corruption was not to impress Transparency International but to engender growth in the country, politically and economically.

Citing instances where returned assets and funds had been channeled to developing infrastructure and welfare projects, Mohammed asserted that the government’s anti-corruption drive had been successfully fought.

Aggrieved Persons In Aso Rock Against Tinubu’s Ambition – El Rufai, Says Currency Change Ill-Timed

By Ayodele Oni

Few days to the presidential election, the seat of government, Aso Rock, currently being occupied by President Mohammadu Buhari as the landlord, may be divided over the candidacy of Bola Tinubu, candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Buhari, who has about four months to complete his eight years tenure of two terms, is enjoying the privilege on the ticket of the APC.

What then can be responsible for the division of interest over Tinubu, who roundly won the APC presidential primary election last year?

Kaduna state Governor, Mallam Nasir El Rufai, has given an insight ascribing the development to some aggrieved persons that lost bid to install their crony as the APC flagbearer.

Governor El-Rufai  insisted that some “elements” in the Presidential Villa are against the presidential ambition of the APC flagbearer, Tinubu.

El-Rufai said they are against Tinubu because their preferred presidential aspirant was defeated in the primaries of the APC.

According to him, they are working on seeing the ruling party also defeated in the February presidential election.

While fielding questions on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Wednesday, he said such individuals are hiding behind President Muhammadu Buhari’s desire to do what he thinks is right.

He said, “I believe there are elements in the Villa that want us to lose the election because they didn’t get their way; they had their candidate. Their candidate did not win the primaries.

“They are trying to get us to lose the election, and they are hiding behind the president’s desire to do what he thinks is right.

“I will give two examples: this petroleum subsidy, which is costing the country trillions of Naira, was something that we all agreed would be removed.

“In fact, I had a discussion with the president and showed him why it had to go. Because how can you have a capital budget of N200b for federal roads and then spend N2 Trillion on petroleum subsidy?

“This was a conversation I had with the president in 2021 when the subsidy thing started rising.

He was convinced.

We left. It changed.

“Everyone in the government agreed, and it changed.

The second example I will give is this currency redesign.

You have to understand the president.

“People are blaming the Governor of the Central Bank for the currency redesign, but No. You have to go back and look at the first outing of Buhari as president.

“He did this; the Buhari, Idiagbon regime changed our currency and did it in secrecy with a view to catching those that are stashing away illicit funds.

“It is a very good intention.

The president has his right. But doing it at this time within the allotted time does not make any political or economic sense.”

Downgrade of Nigeria’s  Credit Rating Worrisome, But Fixable – Peter Obi

0
Peter Obi in Gombe

Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, has described as worrisome the recent downgrade of Nigeria’s credit rating by Moody’s Investors Service from B3 to junk bonds, sending signals to the global community of Nigeria’s current bleak economic fortune.

In a statement to the press on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, Mr Obi said that although the sad situation was a verdict on governments’  inability to fix the Nigerian economy, the seriousness of the issue does not call for blame games but a determined effort to provide the solutions that can improve the fortunes of Nigerians and the country itself.

“The ratings agency’s bleak outlook for our country is a wake-up call on the need for fundamental change and a new approach to formulating and implementing our nation’s economic policy,” Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, said.

“The persistent fiscal rascality, institutional vulnerabilities, and social challenges faced by our country are issues we must address frontally and with the seriousness they deserve.

“I don’t believe this is a time for blame games. Governments have done what they could but didn’t solve the problem. It’s now time to bring in the right team with the competence, capacity, character, and compassion to start reversing the trend and set on the path to solving the problems with the urgency and determination it deserves,” he added.

Obi maintained that despite the bleak economic outlook for Nigeria, all hope was not lost, stating that if elected, his administration would prioritise implementing policies that would address the nation’s institutional vulnerabilities and social challenges.

He added that his administration would work towards creating a more stable and predictable business environment and “focus on reducing the country’s reliance on oil production”, thereby strengthening its external profile.

“There is hope for a better future for our nation. As your brother and friend who also feels the impact of the mis-governance of Nigeria, and not just the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, I am committed to implementing a new economic vision that prioritises the needs of all Nigerians,” Obi said.

“Our plan will focus on creating jobs, boosting economic growth, and eradicating poverty while ensuring that our country’s finances are sustainable. We are not promising what we cannot deliver. Our track records are verifiable.

“We will work hard to break the vicious cycle of high government borrowing needs, rising interest rates, institutionalised corruption, and limited funding options. We will deliver on this.

“It is time for the actual change, and the Labour Party is ready to provide the leadership and vision needed to get Nigeria back on track. We must act now to restore confidence in our economy and secure a brighter future for all Nigerians.

“I believe that with the right leadership that we are offering and the quality team, we are putting together to get the job done, we will turn the tide of economic woes in Nigeria and create a more prosperous, equitable, and stable country for all Nigerians,” Obi assured.

Nigeria On Brink Of Collapse, All Not Well – Gov Akeredolu, Says States Should Determine Wages Of Workers

0

By Ayodele Oni

In pursuit of his call for self independence for federating states in Nigeria, Ondo State Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has suggested that salaries of workers in each state should be determined by its government.

Akeredolu, who is Chairman, Southern Nigeria Governors’ Forum   condemned the current practice of fixing salaries and allowances of public officials by the Federal Government to reflect uniformity across the nation.

Governor Akeredolu pointed out that the practice is unacceptable in a polity which prides itself as federal.

According to him,  the logic of mopping up revenues accruable to states and local governments into a general pool for the purpose of sharing, in accordance with some Federal Government formulas, is anachronistic and retrogressive.

He insisted that power must devolve to the federating units for the country to lay claims to being a federal State.

Governor Akeredolu spoke on Wednesday at the Zonal Public Hearing on the Review of the 2008 Renumeration Package for Political, Public and Judicial Office Holders in Nigeria by the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMFAC) in Akure.

The Governor, who was a Special Guest of Honour at the event, was represented by his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Governor Akeredolu, who noted that it is not sufficient for RMFAC to regulate the salaries of public officials, charged the Commission to make conscious efforts to reduce the overbearing influence of the Federal Government and its institutions on the constituent units to encourage development.

“Let every State determine the salaries and allowances of its officials. Let the states control their resources and pay tax to the centre.”

Governor Akeredolu lamented that the autonomy of the States has been eroded greatly, stressing that the Houses of Assembly have been relegated to the fringe in the affairs of their respective States.

The Governor, who identified Revenue generation as the bedrock of fiscal policies, urged the Federal Government to allow Local economies to flower.

“The appropriation of the sources of wealth of various States by agencies of the Federal Government is the fundamental reason for retardation.

“Our recent pre-independence history, and immediately after it, depicts the immense potentialities present in the various regions and the manner through which the political leaders availed themselves of them.

“The level of development attained in all these semi-autonomous political entities points at the possibilities of attaining greatness if the current structure is tinkered with to reflect true federalism.

“It is on record that public officials in the defunct South Western Region were the highest paid in the country. The visionary leaders ensured that the best were recruited to serve the people.

“Each Region determined, to a very great extent, issues bordering on effective governance. Development was, therefore, achievable within a short period.

“The challenges encountered by the nascent Republic led to crises in different parts of the country, especially the South West and the Middle Belt

“The incursion of the military into the political affairs of the country engendered a devastating effect on the country.

“The promulgation of Decree No. 34 of 1966, which abolished the Regions and replaced them with the so called Provinces, laid the foundation for the erosion of values and determination to excel through healthy rivalries which existed among them.

“The creation of 12 States out of these artificial entities, erroneously called Provinces by the military, to defeat the secessionists, ensured the perpetuation of the policies which militated against the ability of the erstwhile upwardly mobile socio-political entities to be creative. The oil boom of the early 70s encouraged redundancy, progressively.

“The discovery of oil, the reason for the remarkable progress of other countries, has thus become a huge curse on the land. Only those who benefit from this current dysfunction will want it to continue.

“The country continues to pretend that all is well when it is dithering on the brink of collapse. All patriots must be resolute in challenging the present structural defects which stifle growth.

“The system which allows a very strong central government and weak dependencies is not capable of development. It will be much more profitable for the Federal Government to dissipate less energy in its pursuit of the misnomer touted as local government autonomy.

“Most Nigerians participating in this public hearing will conclude, hastily, that its purpose is self-serving and highly insensitive to the plight of the ordinary people.”

Obanikoro Alleges Fayose Laundered N1.2 Billion Inside Aircraft

Obanikoro and Fayose

By Akinwale Kasali

Musiliu Obanikoro, former Senator and Former Minister of State For Defence, has disclosed at the Federal High Court in Lagos how former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Peter Fayose allegedly laundered a whopping of N1.2 Billion in an Aircraft.

Obanikoro is a witness for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in the prosecution of Fayose for alleged fraud and money laundering.

Fayose was first arraigned on October 22, 2018, before Justice Mojisola Olatotegun alongside his company, Spotless Investment Ltd on an 11-count charge.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail on October 24, 2018, in the sum of N50 million with sureties in like sum.

The defendant was, however, re-arraigned before Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke on July 2, 2019, after the case was withdrawn from Justice Olatoregun following EFCC’s petition.

Fayose also pleaded not guilty to the charges, and was allowed to continue on the bail earlier granted.

The EFCC has since opened its case before Justice Aneke and is still leading witnesses in evidence.

In December 2021, the Commission called its 11th witness, one Mrs Joanne Tolulope, who narrated how one Abiodun Agbele, said to be an associate of Fayose, allegedly bought property worth millions of Naira for the defendants.

When the case was called on Tuesday, Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN) announced appearance for EFCC.

Messrs Ola Olanipekun (SAN) and Olalekan Ojo (SAN) announced appearances for the first and second defendants, respectively.

Olanipekun then called on the 12th prosecution witness, Obanikoro, to testify.

Obanikoro told the court that when he was the Minister of State for Defence, he  operated a company known as Sivan Mcmera which was later utilised for purposes of security operations in Lagos.

He told the court that it was aimed at shutting out terrorists’ activities from the State, following intelligence reports.

He, however, said that before he became a  Minister, the said company was operated by his son.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reported that Obanikoro had testified that his son resigned as  the Director of the company and the Operator of its bank account when it became used for security purposes.

He said that he consequently became the operator of the account.

According to him,  domestic security for clandestine operations in Lagos State was also employed to shut out activities of terrorists.

Besides, the witness told the Court that the security operations were funded by the Office of the National Security Adviser.

On whether he knew one late Mr Kareem Taiwo, he replied in the affirmative, adding that the said Taiwo was part of those who helped out with security operations.

When asked by the Prosecution Counsel  to look through Exhibit E Series and explain the transaction of June 5, 2014, and how it related to the instant case, the witness told the court that there was inflow of N200 million into the account from the office of the NSA.

He told the court that although he could not recall exactly how it came in, he could see from the exhibit that there was inflow of N200 million on June 5, 2014 and N2 billion on June 16, 2014 from an imprest account of the NSA.

He further told the court that he had received a call from Fayose, who was  then a Governorship candidate in Ekiti, asking if he had received any money from the Office of the NSA.

The witness told the court that he replied, `No’, and promised to get back to the defendant if the money arrived.

He said that when the money eventually dropped, he informed the defendant and asked how he wanted it sent.

Obanikoro testified that Fayose  indicated that part of it should be in dollars and the other in Naira.

The witness told the Court that he then called Ado-Ekiti to find out from a bank if it  had the the amount  but was informed that the branch did not have.

He told the court that since elections were fast approaching at the time, he had to take the money by aircraft from Lagos.

He said that the money was carried  in two batches.

He said that the first batch was loaded in an aircraft which conveyed him, while the remaining was loaded in another aircraft.

Obanikoro said that the total amount was N1.2 billion.

Obanikoro added that dollars were procured through a bureau de change but said he could not recall the exact amount.

He told the court that when he arrived in Akure, he saw an aide to the defendant who approached him and introduced himself.

He said that he then called Fayose on phone and he requested that the money should be handed over to the aide.

The witness told the court that he then instructed his orderly to go with the aide, while he proceeded to Ado-Ekiti to meet Fayose.

He testified that in Akure, he saw a bullion van which came to pick the money.

Obanikoro said that he met Fayose in a hotel in Ado Ekiti and told him what transpired  at the airport.

The court  adjourned  the case until Feb. 1 for continuation of trial.

NAN reported  that during trial before Olatoregun, prosecution called witnesses from several commercial banks, as well as Obanikoro.

According to the charge against Fayose, on June 17, 2014, he and Abiodun Agbele illegally took possession of N1.2 billion for purposes of funding his gubernatorial election campaign in Ekiti.

Fayose also allegedly  received a cash payment of five million dollars (about N1.8 billion) from Obanikoro without going through any financial institution.

He is  also charged with unlawfully retaining N300 million in a bank account and illegally taking  control of about  N622 million.

The EFCC alleges that the former governor reasonably ought to  know that the money was part of crime proceeds.

It also alleges that the defendants procured De Privateer Ltd. and Still Earth Ltd. to illegally retain  N851 million.

It claims that Fayose used about N1.6 billion crime proceeds to acquire property in Lagos and Abuja.

The commission also charged Fayose with using N200 million crime proceeds to acquire a property in Abuja in the name of his elder sister, Moji Oladeji.

The alleged offences contravene Sections 15(1), 15 (2), 15 (3), 16(2)(b), 16 (d),  and 18 (c)  of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act of 2011.

Nigerian Mobile Banking App Buckle Under First Major Test

Banking Hall

By Uche Mbah

Mobile Banking Apps were overstretched Wednesday with Banking Halls overflowing with bitter and customers trying to raise cash for daily transaction. Many people who tried to deal on transfers met congested network.

A woman, who says she had a flight to catch to Abuja from Lagos, said she spent the previous day trying unsuccessfully to do mobile transfer. “I had to wake up at midnight to try again before the transfer could go. This morning, I have not been able to achieve anything. Who will believe that, driving this car, I have only N70 cash on me? God will help us”, she said.

Mike Asuquo, a veteran cartoonist, wrote on his Facebook wall: “Years after going digital, Nigerian bank apps can’t stand the first major stress test. They were more designed to deduct.

Nansense”.

Most automatic teller machines visited by this magazine could neither dispense the old nor the new notes.

This came a day after the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor, Godwin Emefiele, assured the House of Representatives that he has directed

Commercial banks in Nigeria to continue to accept old naira notes from customers after the February 10 deadline. He, however, decried the surfacing of new notes at venues of Social parties, saying that Commercial Banks are Complicit in the misdemeanor.

Emefiele, appearing before the ad hoc committee set up by the House on the CBN naira redesign policy after several invitations, did not state for how long the expired noted would still be accepted by the banks, though it is believed that it will last till February 17th, according to his earlier statement Sunday.

Emefiele was accused by the Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, of breaching Section 20 of the CBN Act. The section, according to the Speaker, makes it mandatory for commercial banks to accept old notes even after the deadline.

“After the expiration date, such naira notes changed will no longer be legal tender but it also says that even five months, three months, or two months after, even in June, all the old notes presented to the bank shall be redeemed by the bank,” Gbajabiamila said last Thursday after threatening to issue a warrant of arrest for Emefiele. Emefiele, however, apologized for not having honored the previous invitations, an apology the Speaker accepted.

But Emefiele totally agreed with the lawmakers on the controversial section.

“Section 20 says even after the old currency has lost its legal tender status that we are mandated to collect that money. And I stand with the House of Reps on this,” he said. “If you have your money that you have not been able to send to the bank, we will certainly give you the opportunity to bring them back into the CBN to redeem it. Either you pay it to your bank account or you want to do an exchange — we give you. You will not lose your money. This is the assurance I give to Nigerians.”

He said that the CBN had deployed 30,000 agents to attend to Nigerians that are located in difficult areas because of the and nature of businesses.
