Please, Release  Nnamdi Chude From Detention Now – Peter Obi

0
Nnamdi Chude

The Presidential Candidate Of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has called for the immediate release of the young social media influencer, Nnamdi Chude, who is being detained by Police.

Obi said that the boy’s case should be treated compassionately bearing in mind his fundamental right to freedom of expression.

The former Anambra State Governor also admonished Public Servants against arbitrary and unrestrained use of authority. He said:

“Yesterday, my attention was drawn to the arrest of a social media influencer, Mr. Nnamdi Chude. In my usual inquiry, I wanted to know the offense of the young man only to be told that it was because he tweeted against the people in government

“I believe people in government know very well that there is the right to freedom of expression for every individual in our country, And they should also not be oblivious to the fact  that they, as public servants, are bound by rule of law, and the symbol of  rule of law is that rules must always be respected for the sake of our society

“I am, therefore, appealing to all concerned to please treat the issue compassionately to release the young man in question

“It’s also necessary for me to admonish that people should know that when you occupy public office, there are several consequences of occupying that office. People will have their thoughts on you. You have the right to reply but not for you to use your office arbitrarily or in an unrestrained use of authority.”

Ode To  Onanuga’s  Pharisaic Rhythm Of “Let 2023 Be The Last Time Igbos Interfere In Lagos Politics” –  Prolegomena to Military Coup d’Etat

Nwankwo Nwaezeigwe and Bayo Ononuga

By Nwankwo Nwaezeigwe, PhD

When the Igbo want to make a queer analogy to a brilliant brain gone insane or, a beautiful woman gone mad, they often make reference to “Omalicha udala (Yoruba agbalumo) daba n’nsi” (Beautiful African cherry that fell into excrement.) It is likened to a cup of clean water held by a leprous hand; a beautiful ripe orange infested with disgusting maggots.

This is what the Ijebu Ode-born Lagos immigrant, Bayo Onanuga, once a celebrated journalist, co-founder of TheNews magazine, current publisher of Lagos evening PM News and a former Managing Director of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) currently stands for in personality definition in Nigeria.

For this man who should by now be regarded as an icon of Nigerian journalism to open his agbado-eating mouth to cast aspersions on the Igbo in Lagos State by stating to wit among other nauseating statements: “LET 2023 BE THE LAST TIME IGBOS INTERFERE IN LAGOS POLITICS”, is not only the height of tinkering political stupidity but the proof that the king has gone naked in the village square. Bayo Onanuga has proved one fact: that in spite of his many years experience as a frontline Nigerian journalist he remains comically bereft of not only the political history of Lagos but the long history of Igbo-conviviality in nearly all spheres of life in the modern Nigerian State.

The Igbo have never been in competition with the Yoruba; rather each group complimented the other in nearly every aspect of cross and inter-ethnic associations. The Igbo do not also say that Lagos State is a no-man’s land because Lagos State has its indigenes which the likes of Bayo Onanuga, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Babatunde Sanwo-Olu are not members; rather it is non-Lagos Yoruba immigrants like Bayo Onanuga, that are telling the indigenes that their Lagos State is a no-man’s land. The only sins the Igbo appear to have committed in Lagos State are first, being overwhelmingly Christians which overtly irritates the Jihadist Oba Rilwan Akiolu; and second, boldly  supporting a true Lagos State indigene to reclaim their ancestral mandate as the owners of the land, otherwise the Igbo are not saying they want to be Governor of Lagos State.

I had thought Bayo Onanuga to be a fine gentleman of the Fourth Estate with a kin sense of moral judgment; unfortunately, his recent iniquitous utterances of hate against the Igbo because of the shameless need to protect his morsel of bread from Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s immoral political table have proved him to be the direct opposite of what I had thought him to be.

I know some older generations of journalists in Nigeria learnt journalism apprentice-style; like an apprentice motor-mechanic learning the trade through his master, but I never knew Bayo Onanuga belongs to the group. He has just proved to Nigerians that his knowledge of journalism is predicated on “cut and sew” mentality— a mentality prodigally constructed on a revolving clownish sense of servitude for survival rather than profitable creative sense of judgment. One can therefore understand why he was not able to properly manage his TheNews magazine outfit, only to degenerate to the very low-level of running an unviable local motor park evening newspaper. Were the Igbo in Lagos again the reason his failure in the business of journalism?

Just look at the legion of Yoruba elite class in Lagos State; none of the members spares his precious time questioning the frivolous concoction by Bayo Onanuga and his addle-brained cohorts that the Igbo say Lagos is a no man’s land because they have what it takes to mutually compete with their Igbo counterparts at any corporate and intellectual level. It is only among the horde of Yoruba failures in business and which Bayo Onanuga and M. C. Oluomo belong that such infantile evil fabrication can be heard; those who often see the Igbo as the cause of their failures and rejection by their society.

Take for instance my status as an immigrant settler in Lagos State. I am Igbo from Ibusa in Delta State, part of defunct Midwest Region renamed Bendel State, which was created out of Western Region in 1963, which Lagos was part until 1954 when the Fulani oligarchy pressurized the British Colonial administration during the 1953 London Constitutional Conference to remove from Western Region, against Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s stiff opposition. In the same vein, Bayo Onanuga hails from Ijebu Ode which formed part of the same Western Region until the creation of Ogun State. So I am on the same page of immigrant settlers in Lagos State, ethnic factor notwithstanding.

Up to the point Lagos was 076840705 from Western Region the people of Midwest Region contributed their resources to the development of Lagos. So the likes of Bayo Onanuga has no greater right in Lagos than somebody like me, except their clandestine manipulation of common Yoruba ethnicity to cower the real Lagos indigenes into sheepish submission to their domination.  Similarly, when Lagos became a special Federal Territory in 1954 its development became the joint concern of the three, later four Regions, which made its subsequent development the collective efforts of all the geographical Nigeria. Thus it is shameful that such a supposed renowned journalist as Bayo Onanuga would join the anti-Igbo fray shamefully instigated by marked political Yoruba drug addicts.

Moreover, Bayo Onanuga who was born in Ijebu Ode and the likes of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Babajide Sanwo-Olu who were born respectively in Osun and Ogun States migrated to Lagos to seek greener pastures like every other Igbo immigrant. The issue here is has an Igbo immigrant from Imo State in Onitsha the audacity to tell a Yoruba immigrant from Ogun State living in the same Onitsha that he has no right to vote for his choice of Candidate in a General election in Anambra State? This impunity will never stand the test of time.

Does Bayo Onanuga know with his unlearned sense of journalism that from January 1, 1954 to January 1966 when Major General J. T. U. Aguiyi-Ironsi appointed Major Mobolaji Johnson the Administrator of Lagos Federal CapitaI Territory, and subsequently Governor on its elevation as a State, all the previous Federal Ministers of Lagos Federal Capital territory were Fulani appointed by Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Premier of Northern Region.

Bayo Onanuga if not formally literate in history should have been told by his mother in political folktales that Lagos indigenes throughout the first Republic voted for NCNC, a political party led by the Igbo-born Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, against Action Group, a political party led by the Yoruba-born Chief Obafemi Awolowo. In fact in the political history of Lagos State, it was in 1979 that the people of Lagos voted for Chief Obafemi Awolowo for the first time. So let comic Fulani political slaves like Bayo Onanuga and his miscreants not think that the Igbo and the indigenes of Lagos State have not been in political alliance before 2023.

I have always stated and I will continue to state it with the least equivocation. I have unrivalled respect for the Yoruba ethnic nation more than any ethnic group in Nigeria, including my Igbo ethnic group. I have a lot of very close friends of Yoruba ethnic extraction who I can hand an AK-47 rifle and ask them to follow me behind and I will not fear they might shoot me. Political nincompoops like Bayo Onanuga will never change my indelible positive comprehension of the Yoruba personality.

In my many years of close dealings with Yoruba people as university schoolmates, university academic colleagues, civil society activists, political allies and mentors, I have come to appreciate one profound characteristic of the Yoruba personality. Although Robert LeVine defined the Yoruba as the most urbane ethnic group in Nigeria; they however go beyond that. The Yoruba are the most humane and conquerable Nigerian ethnic group by the will of trust. Prove to the average Yoruba man or woman that you can be trusted and he or she will always be there for you. Particularly if you are an Igbo, prove to the Yoruba that you are principled and can be trusted.

Apart from the fact that a Yoruba friend of my father against all odds, saved his life in Bauchi during the 1966 pogrom against the Igbo, my aunt Mrs. Victoria Dada Bolaji (nee Enenmo) has been happily married to a Yoruba from Okitipupa for over forty years. Similarly, countless men and women in my home town—Ibusa are married to Yoruba women and men respectively. May be Bayo Onanuga will also announce that 2023 will be the last time Igbo and Yoruba should marry each other, or attend the same Churches.

The greatest of all my political mentors was the late founder and leader of Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) Dr. Fredrick Faseun who initiated me into the movement’s high command right from the organization’s official Congress at Ibadan, without considering the fact that the organization has exclusive Yoruba objectives. May be Bayo Onanuga will also be informed that Dr Faseun’s only daughter and a medical doctor is married to an Igbo. It remains for Bayo Onanuga to decree automatic divorce for every Yoruba married to an Igbo.

This might be funny but true; my most romantic and trusted girlfriends have been Yoruba women who remain the most modest and least costly to take care of among all Nigerian women. Perhaps, Bayo Onanuga should as well decree that Igbo and Yoruba men and women should not befriend themselves starting 2023.

My only regret is that this nonsense is happening after the death of my most respected revolutionary godfather Dr. Fredrick Faseun; otherwise “who born both Bayo Onanuga and Ahmed Bola Tinubu for Lagos?” But I also blame the Igbo for their crop of bad leadership who lack strategic political hindsight, always concerned with the amount of money they will make for the moment without the equation of political power.

If somebody had gone to the leaders of the burnt Akerele motor spare-parts market to intimate them of the impending danger, they would have branded such a person a beggar. It should be recalled that some of us based on our privileged connection with OPC factions were informed of the plan to attack the Igbo on the day of the election immediately after the Presidential election. I quickly reached out to the Administrative Secretary of Ndigbo Lagos Mr. Kalu Onuma who knows me very well, to see how to arrest the situation. He promised to call me which he never did. Tomorrow the same man would come out to condemn the same attack he failed to put up effort to stop.

Be that as it may, the Igbo and other ethnic groups who were attacked and prevented from voting for their preffered candidates not only in Lagos State but also Rivers State and other States of the Federation, should proceed to High Courts whether State or Federal if not in Lagos State because of the possible bias of the Judges, in other States of the Federation to seek the leave of the courts to fulfill their fundamental rights of voting in the elections as Nigerian citizens and by extension institute injunctions against the swearing in of any person as the Governors of the concerned States. Those physically attacked and injured in the course of the attacks should get their medical reports ready in preparation for legal actions for damages against the known instigators of the attacks.

In addition, multiple petitions to the United Nations Secretary General, ICC, the Governments of the United States, major European countries and their legislatures should be initiated immediately with video clips and snap-shots of the episodes against the INEC Chairman, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Babatunde Sonwo-Olu, Nyesom Wike, Bayo Onanuga, M. C. Oluomo and the Commissioners of Police of the concerned States.

If these satanic politicians don’t want democracy in Nigeria again, then let the military immediately intervene and take over the government. After all the military comes not against the people but against these evil politicians. And I am beginning to believe that Nigerians are better off with military governments than with this satanic bundle of evil men miscalled political leaders. This impunity must therefore be stopped in time, otherwise we may be compelled to invite the military to take over the Government and let us see between the people and these evil politicians who will suffer more.

Peter Obi

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has frowned at the continued delay in releasing the Governorship results of Abia and Enugu States and charges the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to accelerate their action.

He noted that further delay will question the Commission’s intent and credibility of the election.

The former Anambra state Governor urged the Commission to Fast-track their review and quench the anxiety of Nigerians particularly citizens of the two states.

“Having carefully followed the unfolding Events relating to the Gubernatorial Elections in the above two States, let me categorically emphasize the imperative of releasing the Gubernatorial Election Results of Abia and Enugu States immediately.

“I am aware that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said they are reviewing the Collation of the Results in these two States. However, I would like to urge them to accelerate action on this, as their continued delay is questioning INEC’s intent and the credibility of the Election.

Obi expressed disappointment that Forty-Eight hours after the Elections were conducted, it is disheartening that the Commission is yet to resolve whatever Issues that are holding back the release of the Results.

“The Records of the Elections from Polling Units should not be difficult to calculate if the Electoral Officials are committed to the integrity of the Exercise in line with the stipulated Guidelines.”

Zamfara: PDP Takes Pound Of Flesh On Matawalle

0

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has taken their pound of flesh on Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara state.

What the party could not get through the court, they now achieve through the ballot box, following the declaration of Lawan Dare as governor elect of the March 18 governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

According to the results announced by INEC Lawan scored a total of 377,726 votes to defeat the incumbent who in 2021 defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, under which he contested the governorship election he has now lost to the opposition.
Matawalle, according to INEC polled 311,976.

Those familiar with the politics of the state, insist that the people have now shown to the governor that he cannot take them for granted. The electorate are angry with him for taking their mandate to another party, they said.

The results of last Saturday election, analysts said is a strong message by Zamfara people that the state is largely PDP.

Since 2021 he dumped the PDP, the battle to unseat him through the court had been very fierce, but the governor won the court cases instituted by the PDP to remove him from office.

The battle to unset him started on July 11, 2021 when the PDP dragged him and his deputy to court seeking to remove them from their positions.

On February 8, 2022 the high Court sitting in Gusau, the state capital struck out the case filed by the PDP on the basis that the govrnor cannot be unseated due to his defection.

Five months after, on July 15, the Court of Appeal in Sokoto affirmed the judgement of the lower court saying the governor must remain in office despite his defection from the party he rode on to power as the state governor.

Recall that Matawalle lost the Bakura/Maradun Constituency seat in 2015, but later became the 2019 PDP governorship nominee and got to the office after a Supreme Court ruling disqualified the original winner.

But midway into power, Governor Matawalle defected to APC by dumping the party that gave him the ticket to run.

“As from today, I Bello Matawallen Maradun, governor of Zamfara, I am happy to announce my defection from the PDP to the APC. As of today, I am a full APC member and leader of APC in Zamfara.
“I am calling on all APC stakeholders in the state to join hands with me to build the party and move the state forward,” Matawalle said.

Abia Guber: “I Am A Mother, A Pastor, The People’s Will Shall Stand” – Professor Oti, Presiding Officer, VC FUTO

0

By Charles Igbo

The Presiding Officer of the Abia Governorship/House of Assembly Elections has assured Abia people that their will shall stand as she would never bend the rules for anything or anybody.

Professor Nnenna Oti, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, made the heartwarming promise on Monday, while giving an update on the Governorship Election in the State which results are still being expected.

Of the 16 Local Government Areas declared so far, the candidate of the Labour, Dr Alex Otti, leads with victory in 10. However, midway into the announcement, Professor Oti said she   had a call from the INEC Chairman, instructing that collation of votes be stopped in Obingwa LGA because of a number of alleged irregularities.

Before the suspension, Dr Otti had garnered a total of 171,747 votes to lead Okey Ahiwe of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who scored a total of 79,477. He won in five LGAs, followed by the Candidate of the

Young Peoples Party, YPP, Enyinnaya Nwafor  who polled 8,839 to win in his home LGA,  Osisioma.

In directing the suspension of collation, INEC, said it was  immediate  as relayed in a letter Professor Oti asked the Administrative Secretary of INEC, Abia State, Chief Clement Oha to read  midway into collation at the INEC office in Umuahia. The suspension, the letter said, was based on the alleged irregularities in some polling units, especially, in Obingwa Local Government Area where INEC office was invaded.

The letter said: “There will be no further collation of results at Obingwa until INEC Commissioners arrive from Abuja by Tuesday to supervise the collation and take decision on what has to be done after reviewing the situation on ground.”

Professor Oti, a Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God told the people that the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, gave her directives on guidelines to follow in order to ensure that Abia Governorship election results were collated based on the extant guidelines.

To reassure the people she vowed that she is neutral but strictly objective in the discharge of  her duties.

She said: ”I am Professor Nnenna Oti from Afikpo, VC of FUTO. The people’s mandate shall stand.

“I have spent all my adult life in pursuit of the ideals of good governance. We shall stand by the these principles.

”The Pastor in me and the mother in me will not permit me to do anything that will adversely affect the future of our children. I shall do right by God and by man!”

Festus Okoye, Head Voter Education and Information Committee, INEC, in another statement he signed announced the suspension of collation of Governorship election results in Abia and Enugu States.

In suspending it, INEC pointed at “alleged cases of violence, irregularities and invasion of its offices in the affected States as reason for the action.”

The statement revealed that the Commission will review results in the affected LGAs before any other action.

Following is the full text of the statement.

“SUSPENSION OF FURTHER COLLATION OF GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION RESULTS IN ABIA AND ENUGU STATES

“The Commission met today, Monday 20th March 2023 and reviewed the conduct of the Governorship and State Assembly elections held nationwide on Saturday 18th March 2023. Arising from the meeting, the Commission took the decision to suspend forthwith further collation of the Governorship election results in some parts of Abia and Enugu States.

“It will be recalled that our office in Obingwa Local Government Area was invaded by thugs yesterday Sunday 19th March 2023 and our officials held hostage in relation to the collation of results from the Local Government Area.

“Similarly, reports from Enugu State call for a review of the results for the Governorship election from the two outstanding Local Government Areas of Nsukka and Nkanu East.

“Consequently, the Commission hereby suspends the collation of results in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State and the two outstanding Local Government Areas of Enugu State which are yet to be collated. A review will be undertaken immediately before the process is concluded.

“We appeal for the understanding and patience of voters, parties and candidates in the affected States.”

Imo: Shock, Outrage, As Uzodinma Sweeps PDP Out Of  Imo House Of Assembly; PDP Says It’s Fraudulent, LP’s Amadi Claims Victory

0
Hope Uzodimma

By Charles Igbo,

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has been sacked from the Imo State House of Assembly by the All Progressives Congress, APC, in a contest, captained by the Leader of the Party in the State, Governor Hope Uzodinma.

In the election into the State House of Assembly  held on Saturday, March 18, 2023, APC swept every Party out of the House, including the PDP. Recall too that in the National Assembly Elections  held on February 25, 2023, the PDP was left with no Senator. While the Labour Party won in Imo East District, the APC won in Imo North and West.

In the State House of Assembly, out of the 27 Assembly seats, the APC, according to the results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has won 25 seats. While the result of one LGA, Ahiazu Mbaise State Consttuency is still in dispute, and so inconclusive,  that of the Isu Local Government Area is pending.

These details were given by INEC on Monday in a statement issued by  Mrs Emmanuella Opara, its

Head of Voter Education in Imo.

According to INEC, APC candidates Eddy Obinna won in Aboh Mbaise, Mr Dominic Ezeriorah won in Oru West and  Ebonine Ozioma in Njaba State Constituency.

Duru Iheonukara won in Ideato South; Chisom Ojukwu, Nkwerre; Chike Olemgbe, Ihitte Uboma; Reginald Nwaneri, Oru East; and Ambrose Egu, Ngor Okpala.

Others who won are Kanayo Onyemachi, Owerri West; Chinemetem Agbaso, Ezinihitte; Gilbert Nwosu, Oguta; and Okechukeu Udeze, Ideato North, among others.

In his reaction to his Party’s unprecedented victory,  Imo APC’s Publicity Secretary, Duke Cajetan it was a vote of  confidence on the leadership of the Governor.

His words:

“The victory was loud and overwhelming. We are happy that Imo people have reciprocated the good gestures of what Uzodinma has done in the past three and half years in office.

“They have used their votes to thank the Governor for the phenomenal infrastructural development in the state.

“The people didn’t vote because they were coerced or because of the reflection of what happened on February 25.”

But not a few people are scared of a House of Assembly without an opposition. There is no democracy without opposition, they say.

The most vociferous in its condemnation is, understandably, the PDP which has dismissed the election in the State as a sham.

In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Collins Opurozor, the PDP said there was no election in the State and called for its cancellation.

It noted that the election was allegedly, massively rigged by the APC, in connivance with INEC officials.

The PDP called for the cancellation of the exercise, alleging massive rigging by the APC in collaboration with INEC.

The PDP said it was, allegedly, marred by violence, the beating and arrests of PDP agents and the snatching of ballot boxes.

Said the statement:

“From the results declared at the various polling units in Aboh Mbaise, transmitted to iREV Portal and sent in by our agents, PDP overwhelmingly won the House of Assembly seat in the area with over 90 per cent of total votes cast.

“However, as final collation was being awaited at the Collation Center, armed thugs, security agents and Ebubeagu militiamen led by APC stalwarts stormed the venue in the middle of the night, attacked our party agents and took away the INEC officials with election materials.

“It is important to note that this travesty would have been averted if the INEC Electoral Officer in Aboh Mbaise had remained incorruptible and allowed the process to be freely concluded before dusk”

The Party rejected the results and said what was declared were fake results masterminded and written and declared by PDP and INEC. They also pointed at the alleged role played by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu, who the Party alleged was seen, in his convoy parading Polling Units wiyh Policemen, and a Police armored vehicle, allegedly snatching ballot boxes. They allege he was arrested, but later released.

As things stand, it is not likely that PDP will get a seat, perhaps one.

Meanwhile, the Labour Party  Candidate for Owerri Municipal, Clinton Amadi has asked INEC to declare him the winner as the results displayed at the INEC viewing Centre clearly shows “that I won.”

Aftermath 2023 Poll: Rights Group Predicts Rise In Litigations

0
Independent National Electoral Commission

By Ayodele Oni

One of the Civil Rights Organizations, that monitored the just concluded General Elections in Nigeria has observed that the outcome has led to decreased trust in the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC).

The Centre For Democratic Development, (CDD) also noted that violence and vote buying blighted the 2023 polls.

According to report signed by Idayat Hassan, a Director the body released on the elections, violence marred process in 10.8 percent of observed polling units and how political actors circulate suppression videos online to deter voting.

It envisaged several post-election litigations which may likely, lead to judicially declared poll winners.

CDD Election Analysis Centre (EAC) stated that it has already started an inquest to help stakeholders understand how the process played out to produce the emerging outcomes.

It states that “The pro-democracy think tank, which deployed observers to keep a close watch on the process has provided insights deduced from the treasure trove of data it collected during the polls.”

Briefing journalists and election stakeholders during the post-election press conference, Chairman of the CDD, EAC, Prof Adele Jinadu and Director, Idayat Hassan expressed concerns that the improved conduct of the governorship and houses of assembly elections by the INEC has been undermined by the combination of violence, vote buying, online and offline intimidation of voters, disinformation and decreased citizens trust in INEC.

The group stressed that despite INEC’s improved performance during these elections, the perceived questionable credibility of the conduct of presidential and National Assembly polls in the minds of many voters has shaped how Nigerians viewed the 18 March process and their engagement in it.

“Diminished trust in INEC as an institution will shape wider perceptions when it comes to the acceptance of the results returned, particularly in races where a narrow margin of victory is recorded or where presidential results are not replicated at the sub-national level.”

CDD in the post-election analysis also put the spotlight on the mind boggling violence, which affected the elections.

It further pointed out that voter suppression, voter intimidation and the destruction or theft of election materials predominantly by political party agents and politically aligned thugs was recorded across all six geopolitical zones.

It said: “10.8% of observed polling units recorded violence and/or fighting this was most pronounced in the northwest (19.9%) and south-south (11.6%) geopolitical zones with Bayelsa and Zamfara the two states with the most incidents recorded by our observers.”

CDD similarly drew attention to the threat or actual unleashing of violence, which manifested in the use of online and offline tactics to scare off or drive away voters from the polls.

The group revealed that political actors deployed violence, not only offline but also online through the use of identity to drive misinformation and disinformation on social media.

The analysis went on to state that in some polling units, the violence was unleased to intimidate, suppress and destroy election materials.

These disruptive activities, the group said caused a multiplier effect, which further led to the reduction of voters’ appetite to cast their ballots.

“In the first six hours of polls being open on 18 March CDD’s war room team came across a flurry of voter intimidation videos, particularly from Lagos state where it was ensconced in rhetoric about belonging and ethnic identity, an illustration of the ways that voter intimidation took place both online, as well as offline.”

On the specific actors responsible for the violence, which affected the elections, CDD listed them as non-state actors, political thugs and political party agents.

It said the objective of these groups was to disrupt election processes with violence.

“Victims of this violence were first and foremost voters, some of whom were denied the right to exercise their franchise as a result of polling units cancelling results or having their ballot boxes snatched.

“Even though some efforts were made, where possible, to hold polls the following day for example. But there were also attacks directed at, or threats made toward, ad-hoc INEC staff with one shot in Cross River and more than ten kidnapped after voting in Imo state; journalists reporting on the election in Lagos, Rivers and Ogun, domestic election observers and other party agents.

“Violence also targeted BVAS in order to disrupt the process and ensure the cancellation of results, with notable incidents taking place in Warri South West LGA, Delta and Ezza North LGA, Ebonyi state.”

On the significance of the kind of voting witnessed during the elections, CDD said the results would provide momentum to agitators for more party platforms alternatives to the dominant APC and PDP.

For the think tank, the success of candidates who have left the party and were able to gain political influence could encourage more splintering and eventual balkanization of the major parties.

“The performance of elected governors and officials during the coming term will play a part in maintaining this momentum.”

Among other issues, including voter turnout and vote buying, CDD also weighed in on implications of the anomalies witnessed during the polls for Nigeria’s democracy and development.

Adamawa: Bad News For Women As Binani Loses To Fintiri; Fails To Make History

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Contrary to reports making the round that Aishatu Binani of the All Progressives Congress, APC, won the Governorship Election in Adamawa State, defeating incumbent Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the opposite is the case.

Binani was on the verge of making history as the first elected Female Governor in the history of Nigeria. Sadly, she failed.

Fintiri scored a total of 421,522 votes, while his closest challenger, Binani of the APC, scored 390,275 votes from the 21 local governments.

Fintiri won in 13 local governments while Binani won in eight.

Aisha Yesufu Tackles British High Commissioner, Catriona Laing, Says She Wishes Nigeria Evil

Aisha Yesufu and Catriona Laing

By Adesina Soyooye

Aisha Yesufu, a well-known activist, has slammed the out-going  British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing. Yesufu, in her reaction to Laing’s somehow commendation of the very much condemned General Elections in Nigeria, called the High Commissioner a double-faced agent.

In a video she shared on her verified Twitter handle, Yesufu expressed shock at Laing’s commendation of what she called Nigeria’s ‘‘fraudulent Presidential and National Assembly elections” and pointed out that Laing would never condone that in her country.

The High Commissioner had, in her assessment of the just concluded Nigeria’s Presidential election, said:

“I was here till the last election and I finished with this election and I’m impressed with Nigeria’s democratic journey. Yes, a bit of a setback, but overall, I see this as positive and Nigeria should be proud but with a remarkable difference when I came in 2019.”

Her assessment stung Yesufu who, in a video,  lashed the High Commissioner of indirectly  encouraged the mayhem during the Governorship/ House of Assembly Elections on 18th March because she commended the much criticised Presidential/National Assembly Elections.

Aisha to the High Commissioner:

“Congratulations Catriona. They heard you. Yes, they heard you. You came out to tell us that the 2023 election, that you found it fascinating.

“You found it fascinating that people were killed. You found it fascinating that people were injured, people were harmed. You found it fascinating that results were being changed. You found it fascinating that violence was brought into the election.

“Well, they’ve heard you. They’ve heard you loud and clear and in the gubernatorial election, they unleashed more violence.

“More people have been killed. More people have been disenfranchised. More people have refused to perform their civic duty.

“The same thing you will not accept in your own country, you come to our country, and you sit down and you’re fascinated by an election that is marred by violence because, of course, it’s a horror film that you can watch live happening.

“Again and Again, we have said, this double standard, this two-faced standard, we do not want it. You sit in your country, you have elections where people are free to go out and vote. Where people are not afraid for their lives. When nobody is killed when they go out to vote, and then you come to our own place and you are accepting minimal standards.

“You are okay with a few being killed because those few are not part of your family, those few are not your citizens.”

Like Yesufu, a number of Nigerians were surprised at High Commissioner Laing’s assessment of the Elections.
