OPINION: On Chimaroke Nnamani And His Tribe

0
Peter Obi and Chimaroke Nnamani

By Valentine Obienyem

Considering the appalling tone of his offerings, one is inclined to wonder how many people read the surfeit of tweets from a past Governor of Enugu State, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani!

Employing adolescent English favoured by teen boys writing love letters to nubile girls they are wooing, Nnamani’s tweets were characterised by such banal words and expressions as “staccato”, “voluptuous masses of protoplasmic dribblers”, “hogwash gibberish trinity”, “a moving mass of hate, bile and vacuous bunkham”, “could not stand their kerfuffle”, “devious opium”, “trancelike orgy of tribalism and rabid religiosity”, among others.

One can always detect in his continued tweets – glaring tissues of puerilities, iniquities, insults, imprecations –  something akin to pompous rhetoric. There are so far, uncharacteristically, no lucid intervals in this madness.

We miss in them a sense of orderly synthesis, and find merely a congeries of uncoordinated parts, lies, episodes, and personalities.

With alarming indecency, he said of Mr. Peter Obi: “Peter ‘Gringory’ Obi has set the Igbo political trajectory 24 years back. He has become a twin blight and scourge on the land.”Elsewhere, embittered by failed ambitions and concomitant resentment, he explained his overall aim by describing the conduct of his target practices as action of those “who thought they were killing the dream of a Senate Presidency.”

Recently, we also heard Senator Orji Uzo Kalu saying that a Muslim-Muslim ticket was the best for Nigeria; with the illogical contention that it must be balanced by a Christian Senate Presidency! And, because of that quest, Kalu said that the Igbo were not ready for the Presidency!

A Senator from Anambra State echoed the same sentiments from the vision of fixation on the Senate Presidency.

The correlation of the thinking of the trio has finally taken form. As they speak and tweet, their ultimate vision and mission has become clearer. Due to their day-dreams of becoming the Senate President, they attack the quest for an Igbo man to become the President of Nigeria with irrational ruthlessness. For them, Igbo Presidency must be destroyed at all costs. This is the action of a man who foolishly set a building on fire because he wanted to smoke out a rat he was desirous of having for dinner.

Thus, the statements by Chimaroke Nnamani have revealed to discerning Nigerians and Nigeria-watchers the inherent selfishness and myopia of some Igbo politicians and so-called leaders. They are eternally ready to sell their brothers for something less than noble. Imagine destroying Igbo Presidency because  of the dream of becoming Senate President! For them, it did not matter that the man they supported is far less qualified than their brother. They are aware of the man’s short-comings: weakened by age and excessive indulgence, he has, in no metaphorical sense, become senile.

It is manifestly shameful that even when their brother won as could even be literally seen by the blind, rather than stand with the truth and support him, they are crying over what amounts to nothing when compared to what is at stake. It is good they are exposing their thinking to all men and women of goodwill.

But then who really is this Chimaroke Nnamani that has provoked this write-up and what moral authority does he possess? He remains by all accounts the worst Governor Enugu State has had. A full understanding of the man in public office would first require a record of his “achievements” as the Governor of that State.

Across the land, he is easily best remembered as using 50 million Naira of the State’s funds to publicise mini-projects he used 10 million Naira to execute in the State.

Under him, Enugu State experienced more unexplained deaths than any other State in Nigeria.

The greatest horror in this saga was that while Enugu State bled, Chimaroke Nnamani acquired the following: Rainbownet Telecommunications, properties at Hill Gate Estate, Cosmo FM, 22 duplex buildings at Ebeano Estate and many others across the State and outside Nigeria. There were also  Rainbownet billions of Naira shares in Zenith Bank and Guaranty Trust Bank as well as ownership of Capital City Automobile Nig. Ltd., Renaissance University, Mea Mater (My Mother) Elizabeth High School. All these and many that were criminally concealed from prying eyes were acquired while he was Governor between 1999 and 2007.

The extent of his pillage of the State’s resources was universal. While EFCC was making their discoveries about the grand theft and larceny, the US Federal Bureau of Investigations [FBI] was, allegedly, ordered by a US court to seize millions of Dollars Chimaroke Nnamani stole  from Enugu State. (He denied this). A Federal Court in Nigeria similarly gave an order for the seizure of 5.1 billion Naira he also stole from Enugu State.

When his ravaging tenure ended, it left behind it a fatally-disrupted economy, schools in ruins, government seriously-divided, dilapidated infrastructure, and a population shattered in soul. The wise Governor Sullivan Chime understood that the only way to return sanity to the State was to keep Nnamani at bay and he did that with resounding success.

The political temperature in the State rose to a boiling point where it presently simmers as Governor Ugwuanyi brought Nnamani back and tried vainly to re-package him.

It was because of people like Chimaraoke Nnamani that the youth believe that the country needs to be cleansed. The logic is simple: if nonsense such as Nnamani is not weeded out, growth will remain impeded.  The urge to cleanse and sanitise the country through voting out corrupt leaders led to the birth of the “Obidient” movement.  Just the result of its first withering flame has left some nonsense that need to be consumed crying blue murder.

Again, the logic here is simple as it concerns Chimaraoke:  we shall not entrust the fortunes of this country to men who, like Chimaraoke, have bad records of criminality, and are also intrinsically evil and practically incapable of positive change.

Peter Obi is not the “Obedient” movement nor its mover; but  the explanation is simple: the mood of the time called for a voice, and found it in him.  He had been a Governor like Nnamani, but unlike the latter, he left a positive   heritage. While, for example, Nnamani left billions of Naira debt in Enugu State, Obi cleared all debts he inherited and left a surplus of over 75 billion Naira, which his successor, Chief Willie Obiano, like Nnamani, squandered.

Nigerians, shocked by his morals, fascinated by his mind, and appreciating the grandeur of his vision, saw Obi as the instrument they need for the birth of a new Nigeria. They applied to him again and again the epithets coined by Matthew Paris: “stupor  mundi et immutator mirabilis” – “the marvellous transformer and wonder of the world.”

He did not disappoint. His campaigns were master-pieces of conception and execution. He travelled to all parts of the country. Sometimes, he was caught between the hot fury of the sun and the swirling fire of the sands, but he persevered. He did not call names, he did not appeal to tribalism or religion, but kept telling Nigerians what was wrong with their country and how he would solve the problems.  Another irony of fate is that these same brothers of his are those trying vainly to put on him the toga of tribalism and appeal to sectarianism. Too bad!

What else?, the man Nnamani used the most uncouth words to attack has, in his usual genial leisureliness, responded to him through an open letter. If after reading that letter, Chimaraoke Nnamani does not apologise for his crudity, then he is simply demanding the taming of barbaric tendencies.

Fierce Battle For Senate President: Kalu, Umahi, Akpabio Lock Horns

0

The battle for the Nigerian Senate Presidency has been escalated by the entrance, into the race of Barau Jibri from Kano.

Not a few senators appears to be planning to take the exalted seat as the nation’s number three citizens when the upper chamber is inaugurated later in May after the Bola Ahmed has been sworn in.

Jibril, representing Kano North in the Senate, said in Abuja, while joining the race on Wednesday, that competence rather than sentiment should be the major consideration for election the next Senate Pesident.

“I intend to seek to be the president of the 10th senate. In the next few days, I will start my campaign and make a formal declaration,” he said.

There are reports on Tuesday that the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has zoned the position, currently occupied by Ahmad Lawan, to the south south. The party has yet to officially confirm this.
In spite of the speculation that the position has already been zoned to a certain part of the country, senators in APC which won the majority in the March 18, 2023 national assembly elections, appear set to clash by the time they gather to elect new leaders for the Red Chamber as the Nigerian Senate is popularly known.

Indeed, those watching the Chamber described what is about to happen as the thespian clash of the titans with top senators, such as Orji Uzor Kalu, Dave Umahi, Gods’will Akpabio, amongst those that have signified their intension to run.

Ahead what some people have also described as a make or mar contest for the would be contestants, those familiar with the power sharing or zoning arrangement in Nigeria’s polity seems to have a clear view of who among the senators will wear the big cap of Senate President at the end of the day.

For instance, not a few have ruled out the possibility of Governor Umahi emerging as Senate President among other contestants, due to the fact that he’s bared to contest, being a fresher in the National Assembly, by the Senate rule.

On his part, Jibril is not likely to attain the position due to the zone he came from, according to those who have the knowledge of zoning arrangement in the party. This is because the Vice pesident -elect, Kashim Shetima is from the North, apart from the suggestion among those in the party that APC leadership may have also zoned the House of Representatives Speaker to the North.

For Kalu, the current Senate Chief Whip, not a few will agree that he’s favoured due to the fact that he’s the highest ranking senator from the south east, where the party is said to be considering zoning the position.

Unfortunately, thee seems to be disagreement in the party on whether the zone should actually produce the next Senate President, due to the meagre votes received by the party during the presidential election.
Also, the former Abia State governor is facing serious opposition from home in his quest to attain the position. On Tuesday, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Secretary General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a pan Igbo political body, warned APC to stop Kalu from becoming Senate President, because he will betray Tinubu.

This is a minus on the Abia former governor’s ambition to take the position, just barely few hours after he deeclard that it was his turn to lead the 10th Senate, those who spoke on the contest said.

Apart from having a case to answer with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the group said the position should be zoned to Ebonyi state, where one of the contestants, Governor Umahi came from, for producing three senators for the party during the NASS election on February 25 came
Reactimg to Kalu’s comment the body said ” There is nothing like emilokan in the Southeast; Orji Uzor Kalu is not our Emilokan, that is a Yoruba coinage; we are Republicans here.

“The leadership has decided that the senate President should go to Ebonyi; it’s the only state with three senators in the Southeast, so Emilokan is in Ebonyi, not Abia State.

“Igbos can’t present somebody with an EFCC case, Igbos can’t present somebody as Senate President that would be disgraced tomorrow, Igbos can’t present somebody facing trial with EFCC, Igbos can’t bring somebody who doesn’t believe in Southeast Presidency.

“He is on his own, Ohanaeze disown Orji Kalu over his Emilokan, and we have a position on Umahi and if Akapabio became a Minority Leader as a first-timer, we are working on that arrangement for Umahi to emerge as the Senate President.

“Orji Kalu would beat Asiwaju as the Senate President; there is nothing like Emilokan in the Southeast, Orji Kalu has a lot of EFCC baggage, and he should clear himself first before talking about the Senate Presidency. He should submit himself for trials.

“Ndigbos can’t afford to gamble with his candidacy because he is controversial. The 10th assembly must amend their rules base on what they did to Akapbio as a first-timer. Orji Kalu would beat Asiwaju as a Senate President, so we are nominating Umahi.”

The wrangling among south east senators on who should take the position may favour another senator from the south south, Godswill Akpabio, if feelers from the party, that the region is also being considered by the APC leadership, for securing more votes for the party in the last presidential election is anything to go by.

Some APC leaders who spoke insist that the party should not ‘compensate the south east’ for refusing to vote for the party during the election. The position should rather go to the south-south where the party got many votes to elect Tinubu as president.

In case the party decides to zone the office to the south south, not a few insists that, becoming the Senate President will be a walk over for the former Akwa Ibom state helmsman, and the immediate past Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs.

Tinubu Says Nigeria Must Heal After Election

0

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president-elect says Nigerians must heal after the just concluded election.
The former Lagos governor who has been declared winner of the March 18 presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, made the comment despite the rejection of the results by other presidential candidates.

His co-contestants, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP have rejected the results announced by the electoral body citing various irregularities such as rigging, voter intimidation, amongst others.

The two candidates have approached the court to overturn the election, described by not a few Nigerians to be highly controversial.

But Tinubu, in a statement on Tuesday sues for peace, saying there’s need to “champion the healing process, and put the controversies sorrounding the elections behind.

Part of the healing process, he said, is for the governors-elect to embrace other candidates who they defeated during the March 18 governorship election.

He said government officials must now settle down for governance folllowing the conclusion of the election.

“The time for leadership and governance is now upon us,” now the elections have been concluded, he said.

According to him, “In a democracy, majority would have their way but that majority must not suppress the minority from having their say. As democrats, we have to safeguard free expression. Winners must be magnanimous and those who did not win should have a large heart for tolerance and respect for the greater interest of the nation.

“As the elected, the only way to justify the trust and confidence of the people and the mandate entrusted in us is to commit ourselves to the service of the people. We must all work diligently and sincerely to make life better for the masses. As elected officers, we have no other assignment than to be burden-bearers for the masses and ensure they have better life that we promised during the campaigns.

“We must take urgent steps to unite the people; those who voted for us and those who did not. We must champion the healing process by embracing the opponents and their supporters. As I have stated previously, the time for politicking is gone. This is time for nation building, a task beyond one individual or a section of the society. We need every hand from wherever it may come to be on deck.

“I am ready to work with you all as your President. I will be a worthy partner you can trust and rely on as we all bond together, in unity of purpose and renewed hope for, the betterment of our blessed country and beloved people.
“Elections should be a celebration of our maturing democracy and freedom of choice and ought not to be moments of grief. I am particularly pained by cases of ethnic slurs, which are capable of creating needless mis-characterisation reported in some locations.

“My appeal is for us to rise above our differences, which, in reality, are fewer than the valued strings that bind us together as a people irrespective of the circumstances of our births.

“As former governor of Lagos State, I can attest to the strength in our diversity and togetherness. As your President-elect, it is that spirit of inclusiveness we engendered in Lagos that I intend to bring into national governance so that together we can attain our full potentials,” Tinubu said.

CBN Raises Interest Rate In Anticipation Of Fuel Subsidy Removal

0
CBN Gov Emefiele

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, says it has increased official interest rate ahead the removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government.

The Buhari administration had set June this year for the total removal of subsidy on petrol, despite fear among Nigerians that doing so will push up the prices of goods and commodities across the country.

The CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele said during the Monetary policy committee, MPC, meeting on Tuesday that it has increased the interest rate by 50 percent basic point to 18 percent from 17.5 percent January figure.

This, Emefiele said, became necessary in the expectation that fuel subsidy will be removed by the middle of the year, which may likely push up prices of basic commodities.

He explained that the previous measures taken by the apex bank to tame inflation worked out, adding that the CBN needed to sustain the gains by slightly increasing the interest rate.

According to him, 10 out of the 12 MPC members supported the decision to raise the interest rate.

Emefiele said, “Loosening in the view of the committee members would undermine gains so far achieved.
“MPC observed the upward risk to price development and expectations of the removal of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) subsidy.

“These, in the view of members, provide a compelling argument for an upward adjustment of policy rate, albeit less aggressively.”

The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, had in January said the nation’s headline inflation fell slightly to 21. 34 percent from the 21. 47 percent December figure.

This followed a sharp rise for 11 months, January to November, 2022 before it finally fell in December.
Meanwhile, opinion are divided on whether the prices of goods and commodities have actually gone down, bearing in mind the report by the NBS, on Tuesday that fuel prices have risen by over 54 percent in two years.

In Nigeria, the price of petrol and diesel have significant effects on the prices of other basic households commodities, the higher their prices the higher the cost of other goods.

Nigeria’s Election: Why We Are Deeply Worried – US

0
Election Violence in Lagos

Nigeria carried out the second round of its electoral process with gubernatorial and state assembly elections on March 18.

The United States is deeply troubled by the disturbing acts of violent voter intimidation and suppression that took place during those polls in Lagos, Kano, and other states.

Members of the U.S. diplomatic mission observed the elections in Lagos and elsewhere and witnessed some of these incidents first-hand.

The use of ethnically charged rhetoric before, during, and after the gubernatorial election in Lagos was particularly concerning.

We commend all Nigerian political actors, religious and community leaders, youth, and citizens who have chosen to reject and speak out against such violence and inflammatory language, affirming Nigerians’ commitment to and respect for the democratic process.

We call on Nigerian authorities to hold accountable and bring to justice any individuals found to have ordered or carried out efforts to intimidate voters and suppress voting during the election process.

The United States likewise will consider all available actions, including additional visa restrictions, on individuals believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic process in Nigeria.

Following the February 25 national elections, the United States joined other international observers in urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to improve voting processes and technical elements that experienced flaws in that voting round.

The March 18 elections appear to have had significant operational improvements, as polling stations generally opened on time and most results were visible on an electronic viewing platform in a timely manner.

The United States renews its call for any challenges to election results to go through established legal processes, which must not be interfered with.

We further call for Nigeria’s people to work together as they participate in and continue to strengthen the country’s vibrant democracy.

Uzodimma: Imo Lost A Rare Statesman In Dr. Osuji

Chuks Osuji

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has expressed deep sadness over the  passing of the former Imo State Director General of the Mass Mobilisation for Self Reliance, Social Justice, and Economic Recovery (MAMSER), Dr. Chuks Osuji.

Dr. Osuji, 86, reportedly passed on at his Ikenegbu, Owerri residence, after a brief illness.

A statement by Oguwike Nwachuku, the Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to Governor Uzodimma said his Principal regrets that Imo State has lost a rare hardworking statesman full of wisdom and passion for the development of the State.

The Governor described Dr. Osuji as a doyen of Public Relations nationally and globally, a public opinion analyst par excellence, a true follower of Christ and the doctrine of Christianity, a respecter of the traditional institution and a firm believer in the doctrine of fairness, justice and equity.

He said it was not an accident that the deceased was sought for by the Government of former Military President Ibrahim Babangida and entrusted with the responsibility of driving the MAMSER programme in Imo State where he made a lot of positive impact.

Governor Uzodimma said though Dr. Osuji became challenged over the years after leaving MAMSER, he never allowed his situation to blur his sense of vision and mission to serve God and humanity as he was able to churn out 12 books as a blind man out of 22 books to his credit while alive.

The Governor said that as an avid writer and commentator on current affairs, Dr. Osuji left no one in doubt that there is huge ability in disability, noting that he will be sorely missed by all and sundry in Imo State in particular and Nigeria at large for his works.

He, therefore, commiserated with the immediate and extended family members, the Ihitteaforukwu community in Ekwereazu, Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State where Dr. Osuji hailed from and all those the deceased has left behind to mourn his passing, and urged them to join him and the entire people of the State to pray for the peaceful repose of Dr. Osuji’s soul.

“Declare Me Winner Of Presidential Election” – Peter Obi Asks Tribunal; Says, Tinubu, Shettima Not Qualified

0
Peter Obi

Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, has asked the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) in Abuja to declare him as the rightful winner of the February 25 presidential election.

Obi is also demanding the disqualification of the All Progressives Congress, APC Candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and his Running Mate, Kashim Shettima, for being wrongfully nominated.

The LP flag bearer’s petition was  filed by a team of lawyers comprising over a dozen Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), that include Dr. Livy Uzoukwu, Awa Kalu, Onyechi Ikpeazu, Constitutional lawyer, Chief Sebastian Hon, and Jibrin Okutepa,

The former Anambra state Governor claimed in his petition that he, and not the Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu scored the majority of lawful votes cast at the Presidential poll.

The petition marked: CA/PEPC/03/2023 and filed by Dr. Uzoukwu, SAN, is predicated on three grounds amongst which are that: Tinubu, as at the time of the election, was not qualified to contest the election; the election of Tinubu was invalid because of corrupt practices or non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022 and that Tinubu was not duly elected by the majority of the lawful votes cast at the Presidential Election.

While Obi and the Labour Party are the petitioners in the suit dated March 20, 2023, INEC, Tinubu, his Vice-president-elect, Kasheem Shetima and the APC are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th respondents respectively.

In the first round of the petition, Obi and LP are arguing that the nomination of Shetima as Vice President was done in violation of the law and as such should be disqualified.

“The Petitioners aver that on July 14, 2022, the 3rd Respondent, contrary to the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, whilst still being a Senatorial candidate for Borno Central Constituency, knowingly allowed himself to be nominated as the Vice Presidential Candidate to the 2nd Respondent on the platform of the 4th Respondent and became the new Candidate for the office of the Vice President on that date (14 July 2022).

“The Petitioners shall rely on Form EC11A signed by the 3rd Respondent and the officials of the 4th  Respondent on that same July 14, 2022.

According to the petitioners, at the time Shetima purportedly became a Vice Presidential Candidate, he was still the nominated Senatorial Candidate of the APC for the Senatorial election for the Borno Central Senatorial Constituency.

“It is also the Petitioners’ case that a candidate, in this case, the 3rd Respondent, shall not knowingly allow himself to be nominated in more than one constituency.

“The Petitioners shall contend at the trial that the purported sponsorship of the 2nd and 3rd Respondents by the 4th Respondent was rendered invalid by reason of the 3rd Respondent knowingly allowing himself to be nominated as the Vice Presidential Candidate whilst he was still a Senatorial Candidate for the Borno Central Constituency.

“The Petitioners shall further contend that for this reason, the votes purportedly recorded for the 2nd Respondent at the contested Presidential election were/are wasted votes and ought to be disregarded”.

In addition, Obi and LP are insisting that Tinubu also “at the time of the election was not qualified to contest for election to the office of President as he was fined the sum of $460,000.00 (Four-Hundred und Sixty Thousand United States Dollars) for an offense involving dishonesty, namely narcotics trafficking imposed by the United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division, in Case No: 93C 4483.

Among documents they intend to tender in proving their claim include; a) Verified Complaint for Forfeiture, submitted by Michael J. Shepard (United States Attorney) and signed by Marsha A. McClellan (Assistant United States Attorney);

  1. b) Stipulations and Compromise Settlement of Claims to the Funds held by Heritage Bank and CitiBank; and
  2. c) Decree of Forfeiture as to Funds held by First Heritage Bank, signed by United States District Judge, John A. Nordberg.

“In the alternative to 2 above an order canceling the election and compelling INEC to conduct a fresh election in which Tinubu, Shettima, and APC shall not participate.

“In the alternative to 1,2,3 above, I) that it may be determined that Tinubu was not duly elected by a majority of the lawful votes cast in the election for the office of the President and  therefore, the declaration and return of the 2nd Respondent as the winner of the Presidential Election’ are unlawful, unconstitutional and of no effect whatsoever.

Akeredolu Charges APC Governors-elect On Good Governance

0

By Ayodele Oni

Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN , has declared that political progressivism as espoused by the All Progressives Congress (APC) is taking firm root in Nigeria, and the tenets have come to stay.

The Governor made the remark in a congratulatory message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde to rejoice with the party’s  Governorship candidates who got elected at the last Saturday’s election.

According to him, the fact that the APC won in most of the states of the federation, despite the challenges faced preparatory to the general elections, indicated that the party’s message of hope and shared prosperity resonates with most Nigerians.

While expressing delight over the victory of the APC in majority of states in the country, Governor Akeredolu equally congratulated the national leadership of the APC on the impressive outing at the elections.

“I rejoice with all Governors-elect on the platform of our great party, the APC. Your emergence is a tonic and energiser for the growth and development of the party. Progressivism has come to stay in Nigeria political space.

“Undoubtedly, your victory is the needed elixir for our great party to take firm roots in the political firmament of our nation.

“Since political parties thrive on popularity and relevance, you have further sustained the body and soul of our party.

“On the strength of our party’s manifestos and ideology, we shall together help deliver dividends of good governance to the Nigeria people in line with the Renewed Hope mantra of our President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

“Once again, I congratulate my colleagues re-elected for a second term in office. Your performance and hard-work paid off.

“You had blazed the trail for long and your people have rewarded you by reinvesting their mandate with you.

“We must salute all those who toiled to bring to fruition this comforting feat. Our victory as a party belongs to the people who have chosen to embrace APC despite all odds.

“As we enjoy this enthralling moment, let us prepare for the task ahead.  We have recorded great leaps as a party.

“We must be ready to drive agenda that will sustain and maintain the goodwill enjoyed by our party among the people.

“I am particularly enamoured by the track record and antecedents of most of the Governors-elect. It shows that our party recognises excellence.

“I have no doubt that you are all fresh and resourceful and committed to upholding our ideals and common cause.”

The Governor thanked Nigerians for keeping faith with the APC. He assured the people that the President -Elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, will justify the confidence reposed in the party at the polls.

Like Tinubu, Orji Kalu Says It Is His Time To Be Senate President; APC Fears A Repeat Of Saraki-Like Crisis

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Orji Uzor Kalu, Chief Whip of the Senate, who recently won his re-election into the 10th Senate has followed the footprints of President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, by declaring that it is turn to become the Senate President.

The ruling All Progressives Congress maintained a majority in the Senate, having secured 57 seats.

APC Senators eyeing the Senate Presidency have been lobbying their colleagues to seek their support.

Kalu told reporters that it was his turn to become Senate President, being a ranking lawmaker and from the South East.

He said, “It is my turn to become the Senate President. If I’m elected Senate President, I will be team Nigeria. I’m going to work in every corner of Nigeria.

“I schooled in Maiduguri, Borno State. I started my business in Lagos and spread it across all State capitals. My first name will be team Nigeria, my last name will be team Nigeria.

“Remember, I’m the only former governor who has never changed phone line for more than 20 years ago. I’m still willing to maintain that telephone number to answer all my calls. I’m not going to switch off my phones because I’m Senate President.

“I’m hoping that Nigerians will pray for me to become Senate President because it’s my turn.”

But the APC is jittery not to have a repeat of the Bukola Saraki crisis that led to the polarization of the Party leading to the emergence of Saraki as Senate President courtesy of support from the opposition Party, Peoples Democratic, Party, PDP.

APC won 57 seats while the major opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party garnered 29 seats.

Others include the All Progressives Grand Alliance, one; Labour Party seven, New Nigeria Peoples Party, two; Social Democratic Party, two and Young Progressive Party with one seat.

Having won the majority of the seats, according to Parliamentary tradition, rules, and convention, the APC is expected to form the majority caucus and produce the presiding officers.

The party with the dominant members would also constitute the majority leadership, while the PDP which is the party with the second highest number of lawmakers in the chamber would produce the minority principal officers.

However, Some of the APC lawmakers who have openly declared intentions for the Senate Presidency are:  the third-term ranking senator representing Kano North, Jibrin Barau; the former governor of Abia state and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Kalu; and the Senator representing, Borno south, Ali Ndume.

Others who are said to be in the race include Senator, Sani Musa( Niger-East), former Akwa-Ibom g

Governor, Godswill Akpabio, former Edo Governor, Adams Oshiomole (Edo North) and Dave Umahi (Ebonyi South).

Obi Replies Nnamani:  “I am The Opposite Of What You’re Saying; You May Be Mistaking Me For Someone Else”

0
Peter Obi and Chimaroke Nnamani

The Presidential Candidate Of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has replied to the Senator of Enugu East Senatorial zone, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani who, after losing his seat to a Labour Party candidate on Saturday, accused him of all sorts of things including playing ethnic and religious politics.

But Obi in a letter to the former Enugu State Governor wondered if he knows who he was talking about as he is the direct opposite of all he accused him of.

The letter reads,

“Throughout these electioneering campaigns, you have consistently cast aspersions on my person, despite my always being respectful to you as an elder brother, and never publicly, or privately, commenting negatively about you.

“I am really surprised that you, as my dear elder brother, would go out of the way in the exercise of your fundamental rights of freedom of speech and expression as enshrined in our law,  into saying what you knows is not true.

“I find it very shocking that you had to label me as an ethnic and religious bigot and as one who indulges in a campaign of hatred. In this instance, I like to state unequivocally that I am the direct opposite of what you said in your statement and what my campaigns have been.

“I want to believe that my dear elder brother must have mistaken me for someone else because, in this campaign, I have consistently championed issues-based campaigns, and maintained so, even using illustrations and data to buttress my position, to the extent that I have been accused of using data wrongly and media houses had to create fact check desks just to monitor and address issues I raised during campaigns.

“I have been on record to have insisted severally throughout the country that I should not be voted for based on any ethnic or religious link,  but to be considered based on Character, Capacity, and Compassion. I have always respectfully requested that my track records & integrity be verified.

“I will also like to challenge anybody including, my dear elder brother, to show anywhere in my public appearance where I in any way portrayed ethnic, or religious bigotry, or where I called names, even when I came to campaign in Enugu State.

“I was also taken aback at your attributing the “Lagos is no man’s land” statement to the Igbo because there is no evidence of that which I see as a case of giving a dog a bad name just to hang it.

“Maybe, my brother would like to know that I got more votes from non-Igbo in Lagos, Abuja, & other parts of Nigeria, and even if Igbo voted for me, should it be the reason why they should be chased away from where they are living and making tangible contributions to development?.

“Britain will not send Indians packing because they voted for an Indian to become the Prime Minister.

“I also noticed the spirited efforts you put up to tag me a tribal bigot but such would be hard to prove empirically and I would like to advise my dear elder brother not to join in such senseless and unsubstantiated allegations just to dent one’s image.

“As I very much know that among the critical characteristics of every good leader are listening, and learning and my brother advised that I should return to school to learn some aspects of leadership I am lacking.

“Why should I go to school to pay huge fees when I can get it free of charge from my dear elder brother who knows it better? I respectfully appeal that I be invited by my Senior brother to teach me accordingly.

“My warmest regards to the family and God bless.

Peter Obi.”
