“Allow Rivers People To  Breath”, Admiral Festus Porbeni Tells Fubara And Wike In An Open Letter

0
Admiral Festus Porbeni

I write this open letter with a heart heavy with concern and a conscience that will not allow silence. This is not an intervention driven by politics, personal loyalty, or ambition. It is the anguished appeal of an elder statesman, a patriot, and a lifelong servant of Rivers State who has seen its promise, lived through its trials, and understands—perhaps more than most—the grave cost of political conflict left unchecked.

There are moments in the life of a people when silence becomes betrayal. This is one of such moments.

My relationship with the governance of Rivers State is neither recent nor opportunistic. It is rooted in duty, sacrifice, and direct responsibility, stretching back to the formative years of the state itself. In 1971, when Rivers State was still finding its footing, I served at the Brick House under the administration of Alfred Diette-Spiff, the first Military Governor of the state, in my capacity as a Sub-Lieutenant.

Those were years when leadership decisions carried enormous consequences, when peace was fragile, and when the wrong choice could plunge an entire state into uncertainty.

In 1978, duty once again placed me at the very centre of Rivers State governance during the military administration of (Retired) Admiral Suleiman Saidu.

As Lieutenant Commander and Executive Officer of the Nigerian Navy Ship Akaso, I served as his second-in-command while he simultaneously bore the burden of governing this state. I witnessed firsthand the delicate balance between authority and restraint, between power and responsibility. Those were not times for ego or rivalry; they were times when unity of purpose was essential for stability.

My service to Rivers State continued between 1994 and 1996 under the administration of (Retired) Colonel Dauda Komo. During this period, I worked closely with the state government while serving as a member of the Provisional Ruling Council and as Flag Officer Commanding, Eastern Naval Command. These cumulative experiences gave me an intimate understanding of the Brick House—not merely as a seat of power, but as a symbol whose stability determines whether Rivers State thrives or bleeds.

These years gave me something more enduring than rank or title. They gave me memory. And it is memory that now fills me with deep unease.

What is unfolding today between the Governor of Rivers State and the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory is painfully familiar. The tension, the hardened positions, the growing mistrust—all echo the bitter political crisis of 2017. Rivers people remember that period vividly: governance was strained, institutions were weakened, loyalties were fractured, and development slowed to a crawl. Ordinary citizens paid the price for elite conflict.

History is relentless in its warnings. When its lessons are ignored, it does not merely repeat itself—it returns with harsher consequences.

Rivers State is too important, too richly endowed, and too scarred by past conflicts to be dragged once again into avoidable turmoil. This state cannot afford prolonged political warfare. Peace is not a luxury; it is the foundation upon which democracy and development stand. Without peace, governance becomes ineffective. Without stability, investors retreat. Without unity of purpose, progress becomes impossible.

This moment demands wisdom, restraint, and humility from all parties involved. Political power is temporary. Office is fleeting. But the consequences of today’s actions will endure long after titles have been relinquished.

History will remember who chose dialogue over confrontation, who placed the collective interest above personal pride, and who allowed ego to imperil the future of an entire state.

There is an urgent need to restore calm, mutual respect, and cooperation in Rivers State. Investors—both local and international—are watching closely.

Political uncertainty breeds fear, erodes confidence, and drives away capital. When investment leaves, it is not politicians who suffer most; it is the ordinary people—traders, workers, youths, and families—whose livelihoods depend on a stable and predictable environment.

I recall vividly that when I exited public office in 1999 as a Federal Minister, Rivers State ranked ahead of Lagos in terms of investment potential and strategic economic importance. At that time, embassies and major federal institutions were relocating to the newly established Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and Rivers State stood at the threshold of immense opportunity. Yet history took a different turn.

Today, Lagos stands as one of Africa’s leading economic hubs, boasting one of the largest economies on the continent.

Rivers State possesses equal, if not greater, natural, human, and economic resources. What it lacks is not potential, but sustained political harmony and selfless leadership. No state can maximize its destiny while consumed by internal strife.

I, therefore, make this passionate appeal to the Governor of Rivers State and the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory: rise above ego, personal grievance, and partisan loyalty. Rivers State must come first. Its peace must come first. Its future must come first.

This is not a time to win battles; it is a time to save the house we all live in.

The people of Rivers State deserve governance anchored on cooperation, dialogue, and a shared vision for prosperity—not endless cycles of conflict that leave scars on institutions and wounds on the people.

I speak not as an enemy, not as a partisan, but as a father figure who has seen what happens when leaders choose confrontation over compromise. Power may be lost and regained, but peace, once shattered, is painfully difficult to restore.

May wisdom prevail.

May restraint guide decisions.

May Rivers State find lasting peace.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

God bless Rivers State.

God bless the Ijaw Nation.

FCTA Says 10 Out Of 14 Demands By Striking Workers Addressed As Strike Commences

FCTA Workers Strike

By Ayodele Oni

Workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Monday shut down all offices as they commenced an indefinite strike declared by their umbrella union, the Joint Union Action Congress (JUAC).

The Union said the industrial action which took effect from Monday, January 19, 2026, was necessitated by unresolved welfare issues and the alleged failure of the authorities to address long-standing demands.

In a statement dated January 8 and jointly signed by the JUAC President, Rifkatu Iortyer, and the Secretary, Abdullahi Saleh, the union said an earlier ultimatum issued on January 7 expired without any meaningful engagement from the management.

According to JUAC, the grievances include the non-payment of outstanding promotion arrears, delays in the conduct and release of promotion exercises, and the continued extension of service for retired directors and permanent secretaries.

The union argued that the practice was stalling career progression for serving officers.

JUAC also accused the administration of failing to remit statutory deductions, including pension contributions and National Housing Fund payments, warning that the lapses could jeopardise the future welfare of affected staff.

The union further expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the 2024 promotion examinations, describing the exercise as largely unsuccessful and alleging that a significant number of its members were unfairly affected.

Reacting to the workers strike, FCTA explained that 10 out the 14 demands of the workers have been met, adding that other demands are being looked into with a view to addressing them.

Senior Special Assistant to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka,  who made this known in a statement on Monday, said top officials of the FCTA have held several meetings with union leaders, including on Saturday and Sunday.

Olayinka also said that there are workers under various unions such as the Law Officers Association of Nigeria that have dissociated themselves from the strike action, and these workers deserve the rights to be allowed access to their offices to perform their duties.

“The Association of Resident Doctors, Federal Capital Territory (ARD-FCTA), even wrote to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike,  appreciating him for his exemplary leadership and commitment to the welfare of healthcare workers, as demonstrated by the payment of the longstanding 13 months hazard allowance arrears as well as the payment of one month wage award.”

He added that in one of the meetings held with Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC) leaders on Friday,  January 16, the demands, as well as the interventions of the FCT Minister were laid bare, and at no point did the Minister expressed unwillingness to address any of the demands.

“Appeal was made to JUAC Officials that other pending issues were not severe enough to warrant the declaration of strike action, and that dialogue should be adopted in resolving all other issues affecting staff welfare in the FCTA.”

Removal Of Nigeria From European Union’s List Of High-Risk Third Countries Will Boost Global Financial Credibility – FG

Wale Edun - Minister of Finance

By Ayodele Oni

The Federal Government has applauded the decision of the European Commission to remove Nigeria from the European Union’s list of high-risk third countries for Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT).

The decision, contained in a European Commission Delegated Regulation released this week amending Delegated Regulation (EU) 2016/1675, follows Nigeria’s earlier removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) list of Jurisdictions under Increased Monitoring in October 2025, after the successful completion of its FATF Action Plan.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, noted that this important milestone was only possible due to the extraordinary leadership, unwavering political will, and clear reform vision of  President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

This was contained in a statement on Monday, signed by Mohammed Manga,

Director, Information and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Finance.

The minister stated that the administration of AML/CFT reforms were prioritised as a core component of Nigeria’s economic governance and financial system stability agenda.

“President Tinubu’s decisive leadership ensured strong inter-agency coordination, sustained engagement with international partners, and the full implementation of critical legal, regulatory, and institutional reforms required to address the strategic deficiencies previously identified in Nigeria’s AML/CFT framework.

“The European Commission, in its assessment, concluded that Nigeria has significantly strengthened the effectiveness of its AML/CFT regime and satisfactorily addressed the technical and strategic deficiencies highlighted by the FATF.

“As a result, Nigeria has been removed from the EU list of high-risk third countries, alongside other jurisdictions that have demonstrated similar progress.

“This development represents another major boost to Nigeria’s global financial credibility.

“It is expected to ease enhanced due diligence requirements for Nigerian individuals, businesses, and financial institutions transacting with European counterparts, improve correspondent banking relationships, enhance investor confidence, and further integrate Nigeria into the international financial system.

“The Honourable Minister commended the collective efforts of all stakeholders involved in this achievement, including financial sector regulators, law enforcement agencies, the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, supervisory authorities, the judiciary, and private sector operators, whose professionalism and commitment were instrumental to the successful reform outcomes.”

Killers of Kano House Wife and Six Children with the Father of the prime suspect

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Malam Auwal,  father of one of the suspects, Umar Auwal,  arrested in connection with the unprecedented gruesome murder of a Kano housewife and her six children, has asked for his (son’s) immediate execution.

The murdered woman, Fatima was the younger sister of Umar’s father, and so Umar’s Aunt. Umar was her nephew, and a first cousin to the murdered children. Yet, he is the prime suspect in the gruesome mother which has shaken and outraged the nation.

In his reaction, Malam Auwal, the prime suspect’s devastated and heartbroken father pleaded with the Government to execute his son Immediately as he does not deserve being detained, prosecuted in Court and fed with tax payers’ money.

Speaking in an interview on  a Freedom Radio, the distraught father who spoke in Hausa said:

“What he committed against my younger sister and her six children is condemnable. I don’t want them (police) to waste time on prosecution.

“Umar and his likes are supposed to be eliminated. They are not supposed to be remanded and fed with taxpayers’ money”

Auwal disassociated himself from his son’s  despicable act, and urged the authorities not to waste time and resources in observing any proceedings.

The Source reports that Fatima Abubakar and her six children were on Saturday night January 16, 2026 brutally murdered by some hoodlums at their Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters within the Kano metropolis, a development which prompted the Kano State Police authorities to launch a manhunt for the perpetrators.

The Police efforts on Sunday January 18, 2026, paid off with  the arrest of three suspects, including the alleged principal mastermind Umar Auwal

According to a statement issued by the Kano State Police Command’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, Umar and his gang members were apprehended following an intelligence-driven sting operation.

“The leader of the syndicate Umar Auwal a nephew to the deceased housewife (Fatima) confessed to the crime, and also admitted that the same syndicate has carried out series of gruesome killings, and attacks in the recent past, including the killing and burning of two housewives at Tidun Yola Quarters Kano”, the police stated.

The Prime suspect’s father described him as  “a very useless entity to the society who does not deserve being taken through the legal processes before being executed.”

Malam Auwal revealed that before the murder of his sister and her six children, his son, Umar,  had, allegedly, murdered his younger sister and proceeded to pluck out her eyes a couple of years ago.

” I don’t want them (police ) to waste time on prosecution . Umar and his likes are supposed to be eliminated .They are not supposed to be remanded and fed with taxpayers’ money” Umar’s father stated.

Malam Auwal consequently vowed that neither him, nor his wife (Umar’s mother) will make appearance at the courts during Umar’s trial.

While appreciating the police for their swift and professional response, Malam Auwal urged them to ensure that justice prevails in the end .

Impeachment: “How Can  Fubara, A Man, Respond To A Correspondence Where He Was Addressed As Madam”? – Aide

0
Fubara and Impeachment Notice

By Adesina Soyooye

A Special Assistant to Governor Siminalayi Fubara  of Rivers State, has given reasons why his Principal has not responded to the impeachment charges made against him by the Members of the House of Assembly.

Darlington Orji, Fubara’s Aide, in an interview on AIT said that there was nothing before the Governor for him to respond to. He said no correspondence has been served on the Governor so he cannot respond to what he has neither seen nor received. Nobody has served anything on the Governor, he explained.

The Governor, he added, was out of the Country by the time the Assembly began the impeachment move and has not received anything from them. He challenged anybody who claims to have served the Governor with any impeachment notice should come out with proof.

Orji, also, noted that from what they have seen and read from reports, the Governor was not even properly addressed. He said that the Governor was addressed as “Madam” when he is not a woman.

These, and more, are the reasons Fubara has not responded, he said, not that he is ignoring them.

The House of Assembly, had on January 8, began impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his Deputy, Professor Ngọzi Odu, over alleged gross misconduct.

But Orji said although Mr Fubara heard of the impeachment move against him on the media and social media, he was yet to be served as of Friday last week.

“As I speak to you today, I can confirm that the Rivers State House of Assembly met on the 8 of January and up until this (Friday) morning, the Governor of Rivers, Siminalayi Fubara, has not received a copy of the impeachment notice or notice of gross misconduct.

Orji argued that the House  of assembly has not even complied with the processes of impeachment as provided by the laws.

He also argued that  Nigerian courts, including the Supreme Court had said that notice of impeachment and gross misconduct must be “personally” served on the Governor.

“So, he (Fubara) has not been served. He would have responded because he has nothing to hide, as he has not ran foul of any law to warrant impeachment.

Mr Orji said that he only saw the notice of the alleged gross misconduct against Mr Fubara on “social media where the governor was addressed as ‘madam’ instead of ‘Sir’.

“We felt it was just a mere play because the governor, as far as I know, is a man. The governor will have no reason not to respond if he was properly addressed.”

He, also, said that the House of Assembly Members would respect the injunction against the impeachment given by a Port Harcourt High Court.

“I don’t think they are going to flout it because they know the implications of flouting the order.

But for me, I know that they’re honourable members and if truly they are honourable members, they will respect the opinion of the court.

“They can approach the court and ask it to vacate the order.”

”Governor Abdulrazaq Is All Round Failure” – PDP

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State

By Akinwale Kasali

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Kwara State Chapter has labeled State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq an ‘All Round Failure’, in the State, adding that his administration  cannot point out any impactful development the people of the State are enjoying.

The opposition Party  formally passed a Vote Of No Confidence in Governor Abdulrazaq’s administration, and accused his administration of  total collapse in governance and its ability to secure the State.

The decision was reached during the Maiden 2026 Meeting of the Party’s State Working Committee, SWC.

In a communique released by State Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, the opposition party detailed a “leadership vacuum” that they claim has left the state vulnerable to rising crime and educational decay.

The PDP said it is perturbed by the prolonged closure of Schools in Kwara South and Kwara North area of the State.

It added that Schools in these regions have remained shut since December 2025 due to security concerns.

The PDP described the closure as “counterproductive,” arguing that the government is mortgaging the future of Kwara’s children because it cannot fulfill its basic duty of protection.

The PDP stated that shutting schools in response to insecurity reflects leadership failure rather than a solution, and demanded the immediate reopening of Schools paired with a surge in security presence around educational institutions.

The SWC further criticized Governor Abdulrazaq for his frequent absence from the State, alleging that the Governor spends excessive time in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) while the State’s security situation deteriorates.

The party also highlighted a wave of violence between December 25 and early January, noting that over 22 people were abducted in Kwara South alone.

The communique issued also addressed a recent “shameful” incident where elderly women, protesting the kidnapping of their relatives, were reportedly attacked by thugs.

The PDP alleged that these agents of the government assaulted the women in the presence of police officers who failed to intervene.

Following this development, the PDP has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Governor to arrest the perpetrators, publicly parade them, and commence prosecution immediately.

The PDP warned that if these actions are not taken, they will hold Governor Abdulrazaq personally accountable for the assault.

The SWC urged the State Government to end the “prevailing climate of fear” and restore the rights and safety of Kwarans
