What President Tinubu Told APC Governors

0

By  Ayodele Oni

As one of his assignments after taken his oath of office and assumption of duties, President Bola Tinubu has been meeting various stakeholders to chart a direction for his administration.

From May 29, when he was sworn-in, Tinubu has met heads of security agencies, some present and former governors of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Progressives Governors.

Also a few appointments have been made like the Chief of Staff, Deputy and Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Among the fallout of the Progressive Governors meeting with the President is the declaration by him to his visitors that he campaigned to get the job and  has no excuse to complain.

According to him, whatever decision the administration has made is in the best interest of Nigerians.

Apparently referring to the subsidy withdrawal, Tinubu said “I am not a dealer of petroleum products and don’t have a plan to be one. This is about Nigeria’s project, not Bola Tinubu.

“We have to push on, take decisions that will affect all of us. I inherited assets and liabilities of my predecessors, we just have to push on.

“As Progressive Governors, you have a role to educate the people about programmes and actions of Government. We need to do arithemetic and soul searching about the minimum wage. We must dig deep into the Federal Government revenue, we must dig deep, strengthen source and application of fund.

“If we think and work together, Nigeria of our dream is not far. As earlier said, there is no more multiple exchange rate. Let’s consult, deliberate and think together, I operate an open door policy.”

On grumblings over leadership of the incoming 10th National Assembly, the President advised the Governors to “constitute a committee to see the Senate President so that if there are areas of conflict or inadequacy, collaborative leadership can straighten this and the stability required.”

It was at the meeting that the President unveiled his Chief of Staff, Deputy CoS, and Secretary to Government of the Federation.

Ondo Deputy Governor, Aiyedatiwa, In Wife Battering Scandal, Office Says It’s Lie

Lucky Aiyedatiwa and His Wife Oluwaseun

A Group championing protection of women, Society for Women Empowerment (SWE) has accused the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, of allegedly maltreating his wife, Oluwaseun.

The Group, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Mrs Damilola Charles, said the Deputy Governor has been repeatedly beating his wife, Oluwaseun, even in the presence of his staff and friends.

But the office of the Deputy Governor has denied the allegation saying there has never been any domestic violence between the Deputy Governor and his lovely wife, Mrs. Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa, who at the moment, is outside the shores of the country.

According to the Group, Wife beating is a civil rights problem of enormous magnitude. It added that the campaign on violence against women must be applicable to elected officers in the country.

The statement reads: “We have taken our time to investigate and confirm the allegations of domestic violence between the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and his wife, Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa.

“Rumour mills are abuzz about the condemnable act of the Deputy Governor. We, indeed, have it on good authority that the Deputy Governor has, physically, assaulted his wife twice in the last four months.

“It is unacceptable that a Deputy Governor would physically assault his wife and inflict grievous bodily injuries on her. It is equally disturbing that the Deputy Governor would perpetrate this crime against humanity and womanhood and attempt to cover it up.

“Those who occupy public offices are expected to be above board and conduct themselves in a manner that would inspire the people and serve as role models.

“It is shocking to discover that the Deputy Governor assaulted his wife severally to the point that the Wife had to escape to the United Kingdom to save her life.

“The Deputy Governor has broken moral decorum and acted in a manner that brings his office to disrepute. We are, to say the least, disappointed with this embarrassing conduct.”

The Group called on the First Lady of Ondo State, Chief Betty Anyanwu- Akeredolu, and the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development to dig deeper into the matter and unravel the details.

“We are calling on the First Lady, Chief Betty Anyanwu- Akeredolu, and the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development in the State, to look deeper into the situation and represent the interest of the Nigerian women.

“We are aware that the Deputy Governor had deliberately attempted to cover up this incident and also silenced his close aides who witnessed the scene on different occasions.

“We are also giving the Deputy Governor seven days ultimatum to come clean and apologize to his wife publicly. Failure to do this will attract massive action against him.”

However, in a statement, the Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Kenneth Odusola-Stevenson, described the allegation as blackmail taken too far.

“It has come to the attention of the Office of the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, that a baseless and false report credited to a faceless Group alleging the Deputy Governor of engaging in domestic abuse and assault on his wife, has been making the rounds in some sections of the media.

“This falsehood and its peddlers would have ordinarily been ignored at this time but the need to halt further negative reports and rumours capable of creating needless tension in our State has necessitated this response.

“The said allegation of domestic abuse against the person of the Deputy Governor is a figment of the imagination of those behind it and their ungodly intentions to cause crisis in the State had been known for weeks and, therefore, such falsehood did not come as a surprise.

“While His Excellency reserves the right to privacy on issues pertaining to his family, it is pertinent to state clearly that there has never been any domestic violence between the Deputy Governor and his lovely wife, Mrs. Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa, who, at the moment, is outside the shores of the country.

“It is not a secret that Mrs. Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa has lived and worked in the United Kingdom for many years before her husband became an elected public official in Nigeria and since then she has been shuttling between United Kingdom and Nigeria to take care of the home and the children who are also in the United Kingdom.

“Therefore, any report of alleged domestic issues within the family should be taken as the handiwork of the enemies of the State who are bent on causing crisis where there is none and we, therefore, warn those spreading such falsehood to desist or face the consequences.

“It is concerning to see that a faceless Group said to be headed by a name not known anywhere in the State could sell such fabrication to media men. It is more concerning, however, that such lie, which was not backed with any evidence whatsoever, could be promoted into a news item by Journalists.

“In the last four months, quoted in the false report as timeline, His Excellency has been busy with official duties of his office and has, during the period, performed the duties of the office of the Governor as delegated to him by his boss, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, while he was on Leave.

“It is, therefore, uncharitable for anyone to claim that the Deputy Governor has in that period carried out “multiple assaults” on his spouse who is out of the country. This is nothing but political blackmail taken too far.

“We urge the good people of Ondo State to ignore such falsehood as those behind it may just be plotting further attacks on the Deputy Governor to promote their sinister agenda.”

Top Appointments: Anger Rises As South-east Is Left Out In All Positions

By Charles Igbo

The South-east Region of Nigeria, politically, made up of five States, has lost out in  appointments into top political offices in the All Progressives Congress, APC- controlled Federal Government.

From the Executive to the Legislature, the South-east came out empty-handed.

The appointment, on Thursday, June 2, by President Bola Tinubu, of the outgoing Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, as his Chief of Staff, and the immediate past Minister for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, George Akume, as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, sealed the hope of the South-east to get any of the top positions. And anger has risen in the Zone.

The South-east did not put its heart on getting the position  of the CoS, but it had thought it would get that of the SGF, having lost out in the Presidential seat.

Since the Government of the APC in 2015, the South-east had looked forward to, at least, the office of the SGF which it occupied during the Government of President Goodluck Jonathan.

It had hoped it could get that, especially, as its two sons – Dr Ogbonnaya Onu and Rochas Okorocha, leaders of the defunct ANPP and a factory of APGA, at the time, respectively –  led their Parties to form the foundation of the APC.

Many had thought, at the time, that Dr. Onu was a perfect choice for the office. But he was, instead, given a non-Grade-A Ministry  – Science and Technology. Okorocha’s candidate, Professor of Education, Tony Anwuka, a former University Vice Chancellor, was made a junior Minister, Minister of State, Education. He worked under a Minister for Education, who confessed he never knew anything about Education until he was appointed a Minister.

In a few days time, when the  National Assembly is inaugurated, the marginalization of the Zone in the sharing of plum offices would, finally, be complete.

For the National Assembly top offices, the South-east had taken it for granted that it would get the office of the Senate President. Three of their sons were pushing for it – incumbent Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu, a former National Organising Secretary of the APC, Senator Osita Izunaso, and the immediate past Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. Dave Umahi.

However, both President Bola Tinubu and the Party, have since pulled the rug from under the South East Aspirants, and endorsed former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, and the immediate past Minister for the Niger Delta, Godswill Akpabio, for the plum office.

To the South-east, when compared to what the other Zones got, the lowly office of the Deputy Speaker was zoned to it.

Umahi has since quit the race and disclosed that the President asked him to step down for Akpabio. But both Kalu and Izunaso are still in the race, refusing to step down. But, not a few people think it is a waste of time, insisting that with the backing of the Presidency and the Party, Akpabio will carry the day. Kalu and Izunaso will be defeated.

Disenchanted by the zoning arrangement of the ruling party, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has rejected the position of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives zoned to the South-east. It described it as insulting and provocative and so, directed all Igbo National Assembly – elects, to vote their conscience irrespective of State, religion or ethnicity.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Alex Ogbonnia, Ohanaeze said it has “watched with grave concern, the zoning of Principal Officers of the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and is dissatisfied with the continued marginalization of Igbo in the scheme of things in Nigeria.”

It added: “We have also observed that the All Progressives Congress, (APC), zoned the position of the Deputy Speaker to the South-east of Nigeria.

“The Ohanaeze Ndigbo states that allocating the position of Deputy Speaker to the South-east remains highly unreflective, disgusting and provocative to the Igbo.

“To this end, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, led by Chief Engr. Dr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, CFR, (Ahaejiagamba), directs all the Igbo Lawmakers in the 10th National Assembly to vote according to their discretion, irrespective of State, religion or ethnicity.”

For the records, the APC controls two of the five South-east States – Ebonyi and Imo. The party controls only one State in the South -South –  Cross River State.

Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has charged members of the newly inaugurated 10th Assembly to prioritize the interests of the people of the state in the discharge of their duties.

In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde, Akeredolu urged the Lawmakers to see their assignments as a service to the people of the State who elected them as representatives.

Governor Akeredolu, who had earlier congratulated the new Speaker personally, enjoined the new Legislators to be above board and discharge their duties without fear, favor, or interference.

“Legislation is a crucial assignment and one of the most important instruments of government in organizing, developing, and stabilizing society and protecting citizens.

“I congratulate our newly inaugurated lawmakers. Your people have invested trust and confidence in you. You must strive to justify the mandate the people invested in you through quality representation.

“Let me quickly commend you for the smooth conduct in electing principal officers of the House. I congratulate the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji, and Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abayomi Akinruntan, and other principal officers of the House.

“It is our hope and belief that the new Assembly, through its leadership, will have a smooth working relationship with our administration.

“We are committed to any idea or process that will accelerate the development of our state.”

The Governor equally congratulated the 9th Assembly led by the former Speaker, Bamidele Oleyelogun, for recording a successful tenure in office.

Governor Akeredolu thanked the Oleyelogun-led Assembly for its cordial relationship with his administration.

He noted that the last Assembly displayed diligence, maturity, and understanding in supporting the Executive Arm of government to manage the affairs of the state.

The Governor urged the 10th Assembly to allow the interest of the people and the good of the state to be the guiding and driving force.

Coming after Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s wife refuted the death of her husband, the Ondo state government has issued a statement urging the public to  ignore the rumor on the death of the Governor.

The Commissioner for Information, Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, in a statement on Saturday said “We have been inundated with calls and messages concerning the state of health of the Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON.

“We had chosen to ignore this wicked fabrication until it appeared that certain persons seek to draw political mileage from the disinformation.

“Though the Governor has been indisposed, he has been attending to state matters and delegating functions to functionaries of the Government, when necessary. We enjoin the members of the public to ignore the rumour. Aketi is very much alive.”

The Governor’s wife had earlier said in her Facebook page that the governor is enjoying his annual vacation.

OPINION: CBN In The Last Decade

0

By Uche Nworah, Ph.D

Kelvin Gilbert’s article in ‘The Leadership’ newspaper of Saturday, 3rd of June, 2023, titled, ‘Looking At CBN In The Last Decade’ is nothing but public relations hogwash.

In the United States, the US Federal Reserves focuses on their core mandate. The officials are not in bed with politicians and the federal government. They operate as an independent federal agency and financial institution. The same goes for the Bank of England. We usually hear from these Central banks when they have to make statements on monetary policies and financial related policies.

Many of these countries’ citizens do not even know the names of the Heads or Governors of their countries’ Central banks. Knowing their names are not important because, what matters to the citizens are the positive impact of the policies on their daily lives, on businesses and on the economy as a whole. Central banks in the developed countries perform their strategic financial systems and economic stability functions quietly.

What do we have in Nigeria? The opposite. Nigeria’s Central Bank (CBN) is very much in bed with politicians and the federal government. The officials act on directives from the President and sometimes those around the President. It does not matter to them if such directives are not in the best interest of the nation. This has to stop.

President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu should ensure that the CBN remains independent as it should. A new CBN Governor is required at this time to clean up the system.

Only in Nigeria will a CBN Governor (Godwin Emefiele) still remain in office and be campaigning to be President of Nigeria. He took impunity to another level by taking the federal government of Nigeria to court to force the President’s hand to allow him to retain his CBN job and still contest for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Is this not conflict of interest and divided loyalty? How will he be able to run the affairs of the CBN and still be campaigning at the same time? Where did he plan to get the money to run for the office of the President from?

Even during the tenure of Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi (SLS), the CBN Governor before Emefiele, there were some actions of his that were not very good. During his tenure, the CBN became Father Christmas donating hundreds of millions of Naira to some Northern universities and other causes outside their core mandate.

There is a lot that has been observed to be wrong at CBN. The bank is overstaffed. What are all the staff doing? In the digital era where technology in the work environment has made many roles redundant, must the CBN continue to retain redundant staff? Must they still be recruiting staff based on ‘paddy paddy’ arrangements rather than on job needs? An urgent staff audit is required at the CBN.

It has also been reported that the CBN is populated mainly by people from a section of the country. What about people from the other regions?

Look at the way the CBN handled the Naira currency change earlier in the year. Trillions of Naira were spent printing the new currency notes that Nigerians can’t still access. Who would ever forget the difficulties they put Nigerians through during that process leading up to the 2023 general elections? A lot needs to change at the CBN and soon.

Finally, the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu government should ensure that the next CBN Governor is an experienced economist and banker. It will be disastrous for the nation’s economy if we are to experience the banking sector crises of 2007/2008. The knock-on effect were felt in the stock market and this led to the erosion of stock values of hundreds of thousands if not millions of Nigerians. I was personally affected. This was as a result of weak corporate governance in the banks and banking sector regulation.

In May 2023, the CBN announced that it had withdrawn the operating licenses of over 132 Micro-Finance banks (MFB), 3 Finance houses and 4 mortgage banks. Many of the MFBs and stakeholders have protested that the treatment was unjustified. Some of them claim that the issues the CBN raised which led to the revocation were being resolved with CBN’s regional offices. Hopefully, the new government will look into this and order a review so as not to paint all the MFBs with one brush. The defaulting ones after review should have their licenses permanently revoked in line with CBN regulations.

This issue of revocation of MFB, Finance houses and mortgage banks licenses raises a critical question of the state of banking sector regulation in Nigeria. How effective is it? What is the state of health of Nigerian commercial banks? Are their ‘dead bodies’ buried within the banking system that we should worry about now?

There are still more questions for the CBN, much more than the answers provided in Gilbert’s X-ray of CBN’s activities in the last 10 years.

Kogi: Governor Bello Escapes Death By Whiskers From Unknown Gunmen

By Akinwale Kasali

Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has, allegedly, cheated death following attacks from unknown gunmen.

It was gathered that the thugs, allegedly, that of Alhaji Muritala Yakubu Ajaka, the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Governorship Candidate in the forthcoming Governorship Election had blocked his convoy at about 12.30pm on Saturday.

The attack took place near the Naval Base, a few kilometres from Lokoja town.

It was gathered that the gunmen had sighted the convoy of the Governor approaching and reportedly blocked the road and shot sporadically at the Governor’s convoy.

Sources disclosed that a Tundra Vehicle branded with the logo of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, with the Party’s flags also, allegedly, blocked the Governor’s vehicle and occupants of the SDP-branded Tundra were armed with rifles and short guns.

The Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, confirmed the attack, stating that there is no cause for panic as the Governor is in high spirits.

In a Statement, Fanwo said, “Some security aides and other aides attached to the Governor sustained some degrees of injuries and have been rushed to medical facilities for medical attention.

“We urge the people of Kogi State to remain calm as security agents are in full control to ensure the arrest of the hoodlums behind the attack.

“The State Government will ensure that law and order are maintained as the attackers will be brought to justice,” he said.

He added that the Governor had told supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to stay calm and warned against reprisal attacks of any sort.

Kogi: SDP Governorship Candidate Accuses Gov Bello Of Leading Thugs To Attack Convoy

0

By Ayodele Oni

The Candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), in the forthcoming election, in Kogi state, Muritala  Ajaka, has accused Governor Yahaya Bello of leading thugs who attacked his convoy on Saturday.

A statement by his media aide, Faruk Adejoh-Audu on Saturday said “Ajaka luckily escaped assassination when his motorcade was attacked  by gunmen personally led by the Governor of Kogi State Alhaji Yahaya Bello.”

Ajaka was one of the Aspirants that contested in the primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state and defected to the SDP which gave him the governorship ticket.

The statement added that “Alhaji Ajaka and some vehicles accompanying him were approaching Lokoja at the vicinity of the ram market at about 3.00pm when two powerbikes  and Toyota Hilux overtook his car and forced it to a stop.

“This assault was heralded by a Mercrdes Benz Limousine with Bello’s official crest accompanied by an open pick- loaded with masked and hooded men bearing AK 47 Assault Rifles.

“The men jumped down and began shooting at Ajaka’s car and all other cars in the motorcade. They shot for over five minutes at Ajaka’s bullet proof car unprovoked.

“All this while, Bello’s car was parked a few meters in front and was used to barricade the road while the gun men had a field day.

“When they ceased, Ajaka’s car,  a Lexus SUV though a bullet proof was totally damaged and demobiliszed.

“Among the gunmen is one Friday Makama a notorious thug and a former member of the House of Assembly who was recently appointed Director General for Fireams Recovery by Mr Bello.

“Also identified among the hoodlums accompanying the governor is one Bashir Gegu the commissioner for Solid Minerals who has has a gross reputation for thuggery.

“Mr Ajaka who was on his way to keep an appointment with the Mai Geri, the first class traditional ruler of Lokoja and the Attah Igala in Idah decided to abort the journey and return to Abuja after conferring with the Commander of the Lokoja Naval Base.

“This again is another low scored by Mr Yahaya Bello in the exercise of crude power and brute force.

“Bello is on record to have unleashed guns and gunmen on several citizens in the course of his eight years draconian rule. Several persons have been killed by his hoodlums during electioneering while others are missing .

“Ajaka until recently was a member of the APC, who was forced out of the governorship nomination by Mr Yahaya Bello who used minions and proxies to obtain an injunction from a Lokoja High Court restraining him from participating in the primaries.

“The brute action today is obviously in a continuation of Bello’s desperation to stop Yakubu from continuing in the election.

“We appeal to the new President of the Federal Republic, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to demonstrate that his administration will not permit the brigandage of the last eight years which has led to the deaths of thousands of Nigeria.

“Election is still five months away, but  if Mr Bello does not get a strong signal that violence would not be allowed in the new administration several of our citizens will be killed by his thugs and gunmen before the polls.”

Based on this letter, Imo State is already agog in expectation of the take-off of the Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, which, the people insist is long overdue.
