Ekiti PDP, House Of Assembly Flay Upsurge In Kidnappings, Killings

Adeoye Aribasoye - Ekiti State House of Assemlby Speaker

By Ayodele Oni

Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Adeoye Aribasoye, and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have raised voices over rising wave of kidnappings and killings in the State in recent time.

Aribasoye’s concern arose due to Wednesday killing of one at his constituents and abduction of another two persons same day in the State.

The Speaker declared that: “These actions of killings and kidnapping of people were highly reprehensible and condemnable. How can people be killed in such a gory manner? It was senseless and these  should be resisted by all men of good hearts and consciences.

“I have received reports of how the evil doers perpetrated the act and I know that their action was to make  Ikole constituency 2 unsafe for inhabitants because this could cripple economic activities if the perpetrators are not tamed.

“There have been reported cases of people being feared to go to their farms because of the activities of these evil-minded individuals. This will surely affect individual’s standard of living and income and as well jeopardize the efforts of the state government to bolster the food security status of our dear state.

“Time has come for the state government and all the towns to rally support for the local vigilance groups and Amotekun Corps to work in synergy with the conventional security outfits to upscale their intelligence gathering mechanism to be able to respond positively to the current situation.”

The state PDP in a statement on Saturday pointed out that “It is disheartening to observe the rampant and distressing incidents of kidnapping taking place in Ekiti State. It seems as though there is a lack of effective leadership and responsibility in ensuring the security of the people in Ekiti.

A statement signed by Aare Amerijoye noted that “Ekiti PDP averred that these acts of violence do not discriminate; both prominent individuals and ordinary citizens have fallen victim to these heinous crimes. The situation has reached a point where even farmers going about their daily lives are targeted.

“The Party asserts that it is an act of cruelty for a ruling Party that has pushed her citizens deeper into poverty and displayed insensitivity towards their well-being to be unable to ensure their security.

“A government that demonstrates apathy towards the welfare and safety of her citizens is highly irresponsible and inept.”

On way out, PDP advised that “Community Policing: The active involvement of community members in maintaining law and order can foster trust between the police and the community. This collaboration can enhance intelligence gathering and enable swift responses to incidents.

“Legislation and Judicial Measures: Strict laws against kidnapping must be enacted and followed by swift and fair trials for the accused criminals. This will serve as a deterrent to potential kidnappers.”

Labour Party Says No Local Government Election In Edo, Allege Thugs Cart Away Materials

By Ayodele Oni

Reactions have been trailing Saturday’s Local Government Election in Edo State as the Labour Party (LP) rejected the outcome of the polls.

Publicity Secretary of LP, Sam Uroupa, in a statement, accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of manipulating the electoral process.

“Election materials distributed to the various LGAs by Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) were forcefully taken away at gun point in Okada, Ovia North East council areas. The electoral materials arrived Okada at about 11:00pm on Friday, 1st September, 2023.

“Eyewitness account has it that PDP thugs numbering over fifty were stationed at the entrance of the Secretariat where the materials were taken to, they started shouting and shooting sporadically to scare away all Labour Party(LP) members. We don’t want Labour Party here. It is PDP we are working for.

“The vehicles that were parked beside the hoodlums were all from Edo State Government House, suspected to have conveyed them there. As we speak, both the sensitive and non-sensitive materials are still in their custody.

“As a Party, we consider this as EDSIEC connivance with the PDP led government to hijack the process. If not why would they have to deliberately delay the distribution of materials till late in the night?

“EDSIEC should not make any attempt to announce any result already written in Government House because we are reliably informed that they delayed the distribution of the materials till night to enable the Government House plan of hijacking the process.

“In Ovia South West, it is the same thing, PDP thugs came with sporadic shooting and cart away the voting materials going to Ofunama ward, Inikorogha ward, Udo, Siloko and several other wards. In Oredo ward 7, the voters were chased away at Garrick, there were no materials brought to the place.

“As peak there is no election in the affected areas. The situation is no different in many other places.

“The entire exercise is been hijacked as there is no voting taking place in all the polling units across the the State. Edo Labour Party rejects the outcome of today’s election.”

Governor Obaseki Kicks His Deputy, Shaibu, Out Of Government House

Philip Shuaibu and Godwin Obaseki

By Adesina Soyooye

Unless a miracle happens, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, will be kicked out of his office within Government House in a few days time.

When that happens,  it will mark the worst humiliation of Shaibu  as a Deputy Governor by his boss and former political ally, Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Obaseki has, according to reports, ordered that Shaibu be relocated from the Deputy Governor’s office, located within Government House, to an office outside Government House. This relocation could mark the end of Shaibu’s access to the Governor.

In the past couple of weeks, Shaibu has faced public humiliation in the hands of the Governor, who according to Shaibu, is not happy that he dared have the ambition to succeed him in office as Governor.

In Nigeria, it is a cardinal sin for Deputy Governors to aspire to succeed their bosses in office.

Obaseki has, however, accused Shaibu of stabbing him at the back, an allegation the embattled Deputy Governor strongly denied, and, on, at least, two occasions, publicly proclaimed his loyalty to the Governor. But he, also, pointed out that his loyalty does not stop him from his aspiration to succeed the Governor in office.

His pledge of loyalty has cut no ice with Obaseki who, in the past couple of weeks, has publicly cut Shaibu to size.

For instance, at the Thanksgiving Service to mark the anniversary of the creation of Edo State, a Security Officer blocked Shaibu from his attempt to greet the Governor, who looked on, unconcerned, as the ugly drama played out. An Aide to the Governor justified the incident by saying “the Security officer was only doing his job.”

A couple of days later at another function, Shaibu’s entourage which included his Media people, was blocked from accompanying   him to the function. The Deputy Governor, reportedly, stormed out in anger. In response, the Governor sacked Shaibu’s Media Crew.

Before now, sensing a plan to impeach him, Shaibu had ran to a Federal High Court in Abuja for protection. He was granted, but both the Governor and the House of Assembly denied there was any such plan to impeach him.

Obaseki and Shaibu were both of the All Progressives Congress, APC. They defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, when the APC, under the Leadership of Obaseki’s political mentor and predecessor in office, Adams Oshiomhole, denied Obaseki a second term ticket. Both Obaseki and Shaibu won the second term in office under the PDP. Recently, Obaseki accused Shaibu of plans to defect to the APC, but Shaibu dismissed it as a huge lie.

Shaibu’s new office, according to a report in Saturday Punch, is located  at 7 Dennis Osadebey Avenue, close to the Government House.

Reported the Paper: “The building used to be the office of the Edo State Public Procurement Office which was inaugurated by former governor Adams Oshiomhole, on December 16, 2014. In fact, the plaque stating the inauguration date is etched by the entrance of the building.

“A signboard with the inscription, ‘Office of the Deputy Governor’ is erected at the entrance.”

The leadership of the PDP has not been able to successfully intervene in the rift between the two former allies which is likely to affect the outcome of the oncoming Governorship election.

Tinubu Sacks Amosun Ally As Nigeria’s High Commissioner To UK

0

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has recalled Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, UK, Sarafa Tunji Isola.

Ishola, a former Minister of Mines and Steel is a close ally of Ibikunle Amosun, a former governor of Ogun state.

He once served as the Director General of APM governorship candidate in the Gateway state. APM was formed by the former governor and has contested for the governorship twice but lost.

Amosun worked against the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, during the governorship race in the state. He however supported Tinubu for president.

In the letter of his recall signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar dated August 31, 2023, Ishola was directed to report to Abuja within 60 days.

The letter reads: “I have the honour to notify you of Mr. President’s decision to recall you, signaling the end of your tenure as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Kingdom.

‘By this communication, you are now expected to commence the propose of winding down your affairs, and take formal leave of your host government within sixty days and to return to Nigeria by 31st October, 2023 at the latest.

‘I seize this opportunity to express Mr. President’s appreciation for the service you have rendered in your capacity as Nigeria’s Ambassador and Principal Representative in United Kingdom.

‘While looking forward to welcoming you in Abuja on your return, please allow me to join Mr. President in thanking your Excellency for your exemplary leadership and service to Nigeria. I wish you God’s continued guidance in your future endeavours.

‘Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurance of my highest consideration,” the letter said.

Ishola was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2021 to replace Justice  George Adesola Oguntade, a former Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, JSCN.

Meanwhile, the magazine learned that Ishola may have lost his job to the crisis rocking the APC in the state. The tussle for the control of the soul of the party is between the former governor Amosun and incumbetn Governor Dapo Abiodun.

President Tinubu Recalls All Ambassadors

Three months into his tenure in office, President Bola Tinubu has directed the recall of all Nigeria Representatives, career ambassadors and non-career overseas.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar.

Tinubu had earlier directed the country’s envoy to the United Kingdom, Sarafa Ishola, to return to Nigeria.

A statement on Saturday by an Aide of the Minister, Alkasim Abdulkadir,  confirmed the recall of all Ambassadors.

The statement read: “Sequel to the inquiries on the letter recalling the Nigerian Ambassador to the UK, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has clarified that all Career Ambassadors and Non-career Ambassadors have been recalled on the instructions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

A recall letter by Ambassador Tuggar indicated the end of the tenure of Ambassador Ishola as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Kingdom.

The letter reads, “I have the honour to notify you of Mr President’s decision to recall you, signalling the end of your tenure as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Kingdom.

“By this communication, you are now expected to commence the process of winding down your affairs, and take formal leave of your host government within sixty days and to return to Nigeria by 31 October, 2023 at the latest.”

The recall of the Ambassadors, especially, the non-career Ambassadors, will make way for the President to extend patronage to scores of his loyalists and Party members who feel, somehow, left out of “action” since his tenure began on May 29, 2023.

BUA To Reduce Cement Price Next Year, Kicks Against  Importation

0

BUA Group is considering reducing the price of cement produced from its factory, according to Abdul Samad Rabiu, the company’s chairman.

The cement firm is among the producers of the product in the country that have come under severe criticism for pricing cement beyond the reach of many Nigerians who are planning to build their own houses.

The price of a bag of cement ranges from N5000 to N5500 per bag depending on the location where the consumer is buying from.

Recently, Dave Umahi, the Minister of Works hinted that federal government contractors are considering importing cheaper cement into the country.

The minister also promised to dialogue with cement companies in the country with a view to bringing the price down.

BUA and other producers were further put on the spot after the report surfaced during the week that Dangote Cement, a major cement producer sells the product at a cheaper rate in neighbouring countries.

Dangote has debunked the report.

Daily Trust reports that the BUA boss spoke at the company’s Annual General Meeting, AGM, saying the company is planning to ramp up its production capacity with the aim of reducing prices.

He explained that the company is doing this to assist the government’s economic plan, noting however that the importation of cement cannot solve the current price problem.

Abdulsamad said, “By the end of the year, we intend to have two more production lines on stream which will boost our production capacity by at least 40 per cent to 70 million tons.

“The idea of increasing production capacity is to see how we can be able to drop prices on our part to support the government’s efforts because importation will not be the best solution.

“The average price of cement in Nigeria is N4,500 which translates into N90,000 per ton or $100. So if the government threatens to start importing cement, it will even cost them more because the forex is now high and when you bring it through the ports, you must pay taxes, trucking, and other levies which will add to the price.”

Kelvin Ugwu - Ex-FRCN Presenter

By Charles Igbo

Mr Kelvin Ugwu, an accomplished veteran Broadcaster, multi-talented, is dead.

Ugwu, also, an accomplished Actor, Master of Ceremony, recently retired on attaining the mandatory retirement of 60 years from the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, where, for a long time, he read the network news and hosted  the popular Police Diary.

Sadly, he was not alive to enjoy his retirement with his family or pursue his many other passions.

Ugwu’s sudden death was announced by his devastated colleague, Solomon  Lorpev, on his Facebook page.

Lorpev wrote:

“I can’t explain this coz I don’t understand it. The only thing that seems to make sense now is what Yahaya Umar said to me once while I was in the studio  preparing for the news at 4. He said ‘when you sit behind the mic and you take your time check on the hour either for the news or a program presentation and you observe the seconds hand on the clock, tirelessly tick away, just know that it is the irreversible withdrawal being made from your life’s bank.”  The transaction is life, the currency is time.

Unfortunately, you don’t even have the luxury of checking your balance. No wonder the Bible says “teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”

“Big brother Kelvin Ugwu, the golden voice on Radio, if anyone told me your time was up, I would have drawn daggers, but at last, my Pastor, my artist, my brother, my uncle, my colleague, my boss, my friend.

“Sleep well big brother. You were indeed a BIG BROTHER”

Ugwu was aged 60 years at death.

Kingsley Obiora

By Gideon Njoku

A Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Dr Kingsley Obiora has been released from the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS.

Obiora was freed just as President Bola Tinubu sacked the Executive Vice Chairman of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, NASENI, Dr Bashir Gwandu.

On the behest of the Jim Obazee -led Special Investigative Panel set-up by President Bola Tinubu to probe the activities of the Bank under its suspended Governor, Dr. Godwin Emefiele, the DSS kept Obiora, CBN’s DG in charge of  Economic Policy.

He was in custody for a couple of days and before his release.

Speculations are that, just like other very senior staff invited for  grilling since the suspension and arrest of Emefiele in June, Obiora was called in,  in other, to perhaps, be used as a prosecution witness against Emefiele. This Speculation has not been independently confirmed by this magazine.

Also invited and grilled and detained are Sa’adatu Ramaian Yero and Abbas Masanawa, boss of NIRSAL  sacked recently by the President.

Dr. Gwandu, the NASENI Boss, sacked on Friday, was in office for barely three months before President Tinubu sacked him.

No reason was given for the sudden sack. But, in his place, Tinubu appointed 32-year old Khalil Halilu.

According to a statement on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale,  Halilu’s appointment took immediate effect.

It reads:

“President Bola Tinubu on Friday approved the appointment of Khalil Suleiman Halilu as the new Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI),” the statement read.

Khalil Suleiman Halilu

“By this appointment, Khalil Suleiman Halilu will serve for an initial term of five years in accordance with the relevant sections of the NASENI Act, 2014.

“Mr. Halilu, 32, is expected to bring his significant experience as an innovator and technology expert to bear in this important new national assignment.

“The tenure of Dr. Bashir Gwandu as EVC/CEO of NASENI is hereby terminated. By the directive of the President, this appointment takes immediate effect.”

Gwandu assumed office at the NASENI Headquarters, Abuja, on Monday, May 22, 2023, and was barely three months in office.

He took over from Mrs. Nonyem Onyechi who was overseeing the affairs of the Agency following his appointment by former President Muhammadu Buhari as the new boss.

Road Construction: FG Opts For Concrete Pavement, To Review Ongoing Projects

0

By Ayodele Oni

This may look like a frustrating step to people of Ekiti and Ondo States, especially commuters of the already dilapidated Akure/Ado Ekiti highway news that the federal government plans to redesign it.

Contract for reconstruction and dualization of the highway was awarded to two contractors by the immediate past administration of President Mohammadu Buhari.

The flag off was performed with pomp by the former works minister, Raji Fashola, with a completion deadline of 36 months.

News of a possible redesign of the highway was broken by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, during a working visit to Akure, who said all ongoing works on highways in the country that has not attain 20 percent will be redesign, using concrete pavement.

According to him, Nigerians would see more of concrete pavements on roads as it has more life span than Bitumen roads.

Umahi, stated this in Akure during a courtesy visit to the Acting Governor of Ondo State,Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, while on inspection of federal roads in the South-West region of the country.

The minister explained that concrete roads had been tested in several states, saying that it has a life span of 50 years, compared to Asphalt roads that will only last for 15 years.

Umahi said that any road construction contract that the job was not more than 20 per cent done would be redesigned to concrete pavement roads.

Another reason for adopting concrete pavement apart from durability is that importation of bitumen alone was putting more pressure on the Naira and with the use of concrete pavement roads, it would be more of local content.

“Very important thing that I must let you know is the issue introduction of concrete technology in our roads. My argument is that you see a lot of roads that are built  on concrete with a life span of 50years.

“But there is no asphalt road here, especially in  South-South, South-East and South-West even if it’s done by top contractors will not last more than 15 years.

”You see jobs that are still ongoing and that is why we are going round  and then redesigning a portion of roads that are maybe 10 to 20 per cent completion and we are sure that this is the way to go and it has guarantee of 50 years.

“Not only that, you find out that  we are having so much pressure on the Naira, the importation of bitumen is putting lot pressure on the Naira, so cement is a local content, almost everything we need is produced in Nigeria.

“Now local content, The high cost of petroleum products and the very volatile nature of the industry is also another point.

“Almost all our project that are awarded three years ago are due for review, some have been reviewed through VOP (variation of price) and so it doesn’t leave us with an assurance that if a project is started that it would appropriated for and it could be completed.”

Umahi stated further that road construction was a dynamic sector as prices of materials needed keep on soaring and varying and despite all, guarantee for road might not last for the designed life span.

“Let me put it on record that bitumen imported in the 1950s, 1960s are of more quality than what we have today, so we have a lot of problems in our hand and that’s why we are of courageous to introduce the concrete road department.”

The Acting Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who congratulated the minister on his appointment, commended him for the zeal on his official engagements.

Aiyedatiwa said that most of the federal roads in the state were either deteriorated of poorly maintained, while many suffered severe degradation.

The acting governor called for the dualization of Ore-Ondo-Akure road and the need to rehabilitate Ore-Okitipupa axis among other federal roads in the state.

“It is noteworthy to mention that the intervention of  my boss is principally what has made these roads remain in their present motorable state.”
