Gani Adams To President Tinubu: “Retrace Your Steps And Save The Country”

Tinubu and Gani Adams

By Akinwale Kasali

Gani Adams, the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, has slammed the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Government over its insensitivity to the plight of the masses over the hike in the price of petrol.

The Yoruba Generalissimo said he is perturbed by the current economic hardship in the country triggered by the removal of fuel subsidy and the failure of President Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress, APC, government lackadaisical attitude towards the present situation of the country.

In a statement by his Special Assistant On Media, Kehinde Aderemi, Adams explained that it is unfortunate that Nigerians are experiencing this hardship from a president who hails from the south-west.

He noted that the situation is becoming unbearable adding that there is no country in the world where citizens are groaning in pain over an “insensitive” increase in the prices of fuel.

“We knew how much we bought fuel before now. Nigeria is yet to survive the subsidy removal that led to the sudden increase in the price of fuel from N187 to N500 per litre before it was jerked up to N617 per litre within two months. It is painful. No sensitive government would be happy when its citizens were suffering.

He stressed that “It is imperative for me to speak up, especially with what we are experiencing now in the country. It is unfortunate; this is not what we expect from a President who is coming from the southwest region of the country.

“A father must work on the best way to solve the problem of the children.”

Adams stressed that all over the world, many things such as power, health, food, and other necessities of life are being subsidised.

“However, petrol, being the main commodity that moves the economy, and now the same product is being sold for N617 per litre. It is unbearable.”

He called on the President “to retrace his steps in order to save the country from this hardship.”

President Bola Tinubu has observed that the battle confronting Nigeria and the neighbouring countries in the Lake Chad region is not a conventional one, hence the need to display courage in reforming their military doctrine and, practices.

The President, who spoke in Kaduna on Friday, noted that the change in tactics becomes necessary because countries in the region are battling a ‘mobile and elusive irregular force’ that disregards established rules of warfare.

A statement by Dele Alake, Presidential Spokesman, stated that Tinubu was Speaking at the graduation ceremony of Senior Course 45 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, the President pointed out that the adversaries facing countries in the sub-region are not conventional armies engaging in traditional battlefield warfare.

The Nigerian leader, who encouraged African countries to work together against common threats, acknowledged the multinational efforts of Nigeria, Cameroon, the Niger Republic, and Chad to bring peace to the Lake Chad region.

He reinforced his message that the collaboration should serve as a commendable example to be emulated and improved on wherever necessary.

”We must also be brave enough to reform military doctrine and practice. We do not face a conventional army on the traditional field of battle.

“No, we contend against mobile, elusive irregular forces that disdain the normal rules of warfare.

”We must adjust accordingly to subdue the menace. This shall require a change in mindset, in strategy, in tactics in equipment and in gear.”

The President also used the occasion to spell out his National Security Objective, saying it would focus on ensuring security, justice, and democratic prosperity through state power.

While acknowledging the commitment of the immediate-past government in enhancing the combat readiness of the Nigerian Armed Forces, the President pledged to ‘pick up the pace’, by providing the necessary support to the military.

”As Commander-in-Chief, I have given myself the following charge: to deploy the entire machinery of state power to ensure security of our people and property in a just and democratic society.

”Under my predecessor, the Armed Forces worked tirelessly toward necessary reforms to enhance combat effectiveness and operational capability. We must now pick up the pace.”

President Tinubu described the role of the armed forces in combatting Africa’s greatest challenge of violence and exploitation as crucial, urging them to defend the continent from geopolitical changes and resource competition.

”We live in a moment of flux. Geopolitical change is afoot. Old alliances and assumptions are being tested as new ones are being shaped. Trade and global economic activity are fast, yet fragile and easily disrupted by war, weather or pandemic.

”Underlying it all is the often unspoken but urgent competition for precious resources. Water, food, gold, oil and other items have all been placed in contest.

”In too many instances, the contest turns violent. Areas that should blossom into economic prosperity and hope become factories of pillage and oppression.

”In Africa, this condition is perhaps our greatest challenge and harshest injustice.

”Your role combating this grave evil is crucial. For we call on you to defend not only our land and resources but our people and their democratic existence. Your training was sculpted to fit the imperatives of our times.”

Commending the 291 graduating officers graduates from Nigeria’s Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, as well as students from Asia and sister Africa nations, the President underscored the importance of the college and its contributions to professionalism and defense of national interests.

Addressing the graduating students from Asia and Africa, the President said their presence in Nigeria is a testimony that national security is not solely achieved through muscle and might, but also in building friendships and alliances based on cooperation, justice, good governance and mutual respect.

”Notwithstanding the demands of your training, I hope you have enjoyed our customary Nigerian friendliness as well because Nigeria is one of the most hospitable countries you can find. We have opened our arms like friends and brothers to you.

”To the graduating students from Nigeria’s Ministries, Departments and Agencies, you have warranted the confidence of your respective organizations.

”The knowledge gained here will prove invaluable in our mission to harmonize all aspects of government policy and programs toward the twin goals of national security and national prosperity.”

The President also commended the College’s efforts in curricula improvement and facility upgrade, encouraging the graduates to stand brave and unwavering in their constitutional responsibilities as defenders of the nation.

”I leave you with a charge much like the one I gave myself.  Your nation has invested much in your training.

”Much faith has been placed upon your broad shoulders. Our collective safety rests in your hands.

”Your graduation today is a call to greater duty for the nation you love. May you stand brave and unwavering in the discharge of your constitutional responsibilities and may you always do honour to the sterling name of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College.”

Umunnakwe Is A Chronic Liar –  Obi’s Aide

Mr. Valentine Obienyem, the Media Adviser to the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has described Chief Jude Umunnakwe as a chronic liar. Obienyem was reacting to the press release by the group Ununnakwe leads, which he calls “Soludo Solution Movement (SSM)” saying that not even one out of the many roads built by Mr. Peter Obi is still standing.

Obienyem’s reaction was contained in a press release made available to the press, where he recalled that it is, almost, 10 years since Obi left government, and wondered what informed Umunnakwe’s failure to refer to those roads built even recently in his assessment, while insisting that most of the roads Obi built are still intact, except those that the people that came after him failed to maintain as is done in other parts of the world.

Obienyem, being  aware that maintenance is a critical part of road culture, charged Jude to investigate what happened to the Anambra  State Road Maintenance Agency Obi set up with full component of road maintenance equipment.

Obienyem went on to name some of the roads Obi constructed and challenged Umunnakwe to visit them and confirm. The roads: Oba- Nnewi Teaching Hospital Road;   Onitsha Bridge head to Umunya;  Zik’s Avenue, Awka; Nnobi-Nnewi Road; Adazi-Nnukwu -Obeledu-Neni;  Akwaeze-Oraeri Igbo Ukwu Road;  Awgwu-Amaokpala Road with Odor Bridge; Aguluezechukwu-Ogboji- Ajalli road;  Ekwulobia- Nkpologwu-Akpo-Achina-Umuchu Road;  Over 30 roads in other parts of Onitsha; Over 25 roads within the GRA, Onitsha; Over 20 stone based roads within Habour Industrial Estate Onitsha; Old Nkpor-Amawbia Road;  Awkuzu-Igbarian Road passing through the university; Owerre-Ezukalla-Umuchukwu Road; Ugwuoba-Obosi Road, 33 junction -Nwafor Orizu College of Education Road,  Lilu Road, Nkwele Ezunaka by pass, Roads within Nnewi town; Roads within the Awka GRA, and many more.

Obienyem who frowned at the antics of jobless youths founding organizations that only exist on paper to make noise, such as the one under which Mr. Umunnakwe spoke, advised people like him to look for a better thing that would edify them and humanity to do.

In Obienyem’s words: “Jude Umunnakwe has become notorious for such. When Obi was in Government, he wanted to form one, but we warned him not to as such was not agreeable to Obi’s nature. We are aware that under Obiano he did the same. Today he has found one ostensibly to support Soludo, but actually to use it to make money from people and to lobby for appointment. We are not against the type of life he has chosen to live, we are, however, against taking  people’s name in vain.”

FIFA Women World Cup: 10-Man Gallant Super Falcons Salvage Draw Against Canada

By Akinwale Kasali

A brilliant 48-Minutes Penalty Save by Super Falcons Goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie propelled the Nigerian side to a goalless draw against highly rated Olympic Champions, Canada, at the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women World Cup.

The Super Falcons proved bookmakers wrong by salvaging a hard earned draw against Canada who dominated the match, and created several chances, but the resilient defense of the nine-time African Women Champions denied the Canadians the much needed goal.

Coach Randy Waldrum started the game with Chiamaka Nnadozie in goal, Ashleigh Plumptre, Osinachi Ohale, Michelle Alozie and Blessing Demehin in the heart of the defense.

Blessing Ucheibe, Deborah Abiodun, Toni Payne and Francesca Ordega were in the midfield with Asisat Oshoala and Ifeoma Onumonu leading the attack.

Onumonu forced a brilliant save from the Canadian Goalkeeper in the first half, while Oshoala couldn’t convert a half chance from an acute angle.

The introduction of Uchenna Kanu added bite to the Super Falcons attack but this never metamorphosed into anything meaningful.

Petite Midfielder, Deborah Abiodun who is making her Senior World Debut was red carded for a reckless foul on Canadian, Ashley Lawrence reducing the Super Falcons to 10 Men, however leading to pressure on the Nigerian defense.

The perseverance and coordination of the Nigerian team paid off as they salvage a draw in their opening match.

A Soccer enthusiast, Korede Emmanuel said that the Ladies performed brilliantly well beyond his expectations putting into consideration the hullabaloo that played out between Coach Waldrum and the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, leadership over unpaid bonuses and arrears.

He is optimistic that the Super Falcons could spring up a surprise against host, Australia in their second Group match with Halimatu Ayinde and Rasheedat Ajibade returning to the team after observing their one match following the red cards they got at the African Women Championship in Morocco.

The Super Falcons will face Australia on July 27th, 2023.

Honeywell’s N72.2bn Judgement Claim Exercise in Futility – Ecobank

0
Ecobank Nigeria Limited has lodged an appeal against the ruling of the Federal High Court, Lagos, delivered by Hon. Justice M. Liman, in the N72 billion lawsuit brought against the bank by Honeywell Flour Mills Plc.
A spokesperson for Ecobank asserted that the judgement claim is an exercise in futility as the bank would diligently pursue the appeal with the aim of overturning the judgment of the Federal High Court. Additionally, Ecobank remains committed to recovering the debts owed by Honeywell, emphasizing that the return of depositors’ funds is crucial for ensuring the continued support and growth of local businesses by the bank.
In its Notice of Appeal dated 19th July 2023, filed on the same date, Ecobank seeks to overturn the judgment delivered on 18th July 2023. The bank is also seeking an Order from the Court of Appeal to uphold its Notice of Preliminary Objection, challenging the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court to preside over the matter. Alternatively, Ecobank requests the Court of Appeal to dismiss Honeywell’s claim at the lower court, asserting that the evidence presented did not support the claim.
Alongside the Notice of Appeal, Ecobank filed a Motion on Notice to stay the execution of the lower court’s judgment and to prevent Honeywell or any party acting on their behalf from taking advantage of the ruling pending the appeal hearing. The bank also seeks to restrain the Deputy Sheriff of the Federal High Court, bailiffs, and any other involved parties from enforcing the judgment.
The Bank filed several grounds of appeal, including, challenging the court’s  jurisdiction to adjudicate on the matter seeing that the court lacked the power to entertain a claim for damages based on an undertaking made by the Bank despite the judgment of the Supreme Court, which confirmed Honeywell’s indebtedness to Ecobank and directed Honeywell to settle its obligations. Ecobank maintains that this judgment by the Supreme Court nullifies the foundation of Honeywell’s current suit.
In its third Ground of Appeal, Ecobank contends that the judgment was delivered outside the constitutionally prescribed period of 90 days, resulting in a miscarriage of justice against the bank. The trial concluded on 9th March 2021, and written addresses were adopted on 16th March 2022, while the judgment was delivered on 18th July 2023, more than two years after the trial’s conclusion. Ecobank argues that the prolonged delay affected the court’s impression of the trial, leading to a judgment that does not align with the weight of evidence presented.

Economy: Council Workers Demand 300 Percent Pay Rise

0
The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, has demanded a 300 percent increase in minimum wage.
The local government workers’ demand is in response to the recent economic situation in the country, caused by the removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government.
Workers across the country are demanding an incremental pay rise to be able to cope with the rising prices of essential commodities.
According to a statement signed on Thursday in Abuja  by Ambali Olatunji and ISA Gambo, NULGE National President and secretary respectively, said the 300 percent pay rise is necessary to view of inflation caused by petrol subsidy removal.
The union stated that state governors have not been doing well for local governments, urging the federal government to declare a state of emergency at that level, adding that a special infrastructure fund should be created to provide welfare for the people.
This will address the issue of infrastructure decay, poverty and unemployment at the local level, the union said.
Also, the union urged  the federal government to utilise the $800 million from the World Bank to provide mass transit and other interventions, as well as tax rebate to SMEs and low income earners in the country.
NULGE said “it is the conviction of the union that autonomy for local governments remains the best way to return the country to the part of development and growth,” he said.
“This will translate to the direct funding of local governments without which no genuine national development can be achieved.”
On Tuesday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio disclosed that plan is ongoing to increase workers salary.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu on Thursday also approved the establishment of Infrastructure Support Fund, ISF, as part of efforts to cushion effects of subsidy removal.

OPINION: Tinubu Sprayed The Country With Petrol, Light Matches

0
By Adeola Soetan
Pro-market President Bola Tinubu threw his fellow citizens under the moving truck of market forces on his inauguration day by declaring that oil subsidy is gone, without entering his office to carefully study the real market situation in the oil industry do price control.
To defend that terrible wrong step on his first day on the basis that the outgone Muhammadu Buhari failed regime didn’t budget for “oil subsidy” beyond June is too puerile and untenable. Anyone with marginal intelligence should know that an outgone regime can’t dictate to a new government its policy stand.
The simplest thing Tinubu should have done was to have requested an “oil subsidy” supplementary budget like he now did for his N500 billion palliative budget, form his cabinet first, thoroughly scrutinize with experts the conflicting figures being bandied around over the years by NNPC, petroleum and finance ministries, CBN and other relevant agencies of government, invite all core stakeholders including labour leadership for all to see the actual from the fake figures before arriving at a decision.
But like his predecessors, he failed to do that because there’s nothing factual to show beyond figure juggling.
Tinubu too was not convinced that there was fidelity in the operation of the oil industry when he cried out during his campaign: “E ba gbe epo pamo, e ba fi owo kun owo epo, a ma dibo, a ma wole” (if you like hoard petrol, if you like hike petrol price, we will vote and we will win.)
So why the rush to foist maximum profit-centred market forces on the citizens who are yet to recuperate from the pains and agony of the Buhari regime of eight years, of failed promises, sorrow, tears and blood?
I ask, Price Control of what? Of foodstuffs, goods and services that their costs continue to jump higher with devalued naira, low purchasing power and flying inflation as multiplier effects of the unprecedented hike in pump price, now twice in two months. What an audacity caused by his undying love for market forces!
If you don’t know what a multi-chain adverse reaction in a mono-economy is, when a president disrupts the central structure of the economy, now you know the pains and the pangs whose end may not be in sight for a long time to come.
This is because the selling and buying market now has become disorderly speculative. No economy grows in a state of “not sure what the market price will be the next moment”.
Only a few big businesses have shock absorbers for such disorderliness caused by “subsidy” removal. Small and medium-scale buying and selling businesses will die by instalment and throw more people into unemployment, it’s a matter of time.
The Federal government cannot control the prices of goods and services it does not produce but it can control the price through subsidy what it (nation) produces like oil and gas whose cost will invariably control the prices of other commodities.
Instead of demanding price control on foodstuffs, goods and services as an escape route which is even impossible under the current harsh economic policy and uncertainty of what next, how and when the petrol price will be hiked again, what reasonable realistic people should demand is a drastic reduction in the price of petrol because that is the cause of the price jump of other goods and services. Causes and effects are an elementary economics term and a common philosophy of life.
It’s funny to hear many, unthinking, spontaneous, automated or recruited members of the “fuel subsidy” removal orchestra lamenting the current government unleashed a severe state of the economy and total dislocation in the economic lives of the citizenry. So they didn’t give a thought to the after-effects of the subsidy removal they supported. More embarrassing is to see the 2012 anti-oil subsidy removal civil society “warriors” including many human rights activists falling sheepishly for the removal of “subsidy” now when nothing has fundamentally changed economically and in the corruption in the oil industry. Their U-turn may be for a lack of ideological understanding of the 2012 protest against “subsidy removal”. It may also be because of blind political partisanship or just being naive.
The current bad economic situation is an ideological class battle, as usual, between neo-liberal pro-market forces, aka Team IMF/World Bank and anti-market, pro-regulation forces, aka People’s Economic Survival Team.
It had been an irreconcilable economic battle since the Structural Adjustment Program, SAP, was unleashed on Nigeria in the 80s during Babangida’s failed military regime. Total deregulation of the commanding heights of the economy including oil and gas has always been on the table of the IMF but the resistance of the masses, revolutionary, radical organisations and labour union leaders made it impossible over the years.
Those who are calling on God to intervene in this Tinubu-inflicted economic crisis are merely wasting their time because the economic crisis is never resolved by spiritualism. China is a good reference here.
The president of a nation does not spontaneously spray the country with petrol, light matches economically speaking, and when the citizens are feeling the intense heat they start praying to God to quench the fire. That will be unreasonable.

“We Shall End Nigeria’s  Economic Challenges” – APC Governors

0

By Ayodele Oni

Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), known as Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), has revealed plans by the Federal Government to address the current challenges confronting Nigerians over the  withdrawal of petrol subsidy.

The Forum pointed out that it is working with the Federal Government to address the hardship.

The PGF Chairman and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, stated this while speaking with journalists at the end of the Governors ’ closed-door meeting in Abuja Wednesday night.

Uzodimma described the meeting as successful, saying it discussed ongoings on national issues.

The Governor said: “The current hardship occasioned by the price increase on both food, petroleum products, and cost of living is being addressed. The sub-national government is working with the Federal Government to address the development.”

He added that the National Executive Council (NEC) would further discuss on how to address the development to lessen the burden on the citizens when it meets.

The PGF Chairman assured that the APC governors would effectively utilize their federal allocation in the best interest of the people, adding that they would also ensure that the country’s economy was protected and its sovereign margin was not tampered with in the international market but improved upon.

Uzodimma said the governors received in good faith, the recent resignation of  Abdullahi Adamu and  Iyola Omisore as the party’s National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively, saying their resignation was voluntary.

According to him, the governors respect their actions and commend their wisdom, saying they had done well and served the party well.

“We now have an acting National Chairman and acting National Secretary,” Uzodimma said, adding that contrary to speculations, the APC is united and has no crisis within its ranks and file.

States are expected to receive higher allocation from the Federation Account this month following rise in fund earmarked for sharing among the three tiers of Government.

The Progressives governors and their counterpart in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) went into another closed door with the vice president, Kashim Shettina, this time on the National Economic Council (NEC) in Abuja on Thursday.
