Uzodimma Welcomes Army’s “Operation Udoka” In South East, Seeks Improved Funding For Police

0

The Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma has made a strong case for improved funding of the police in Nigeria, proposing that a bill should emanate from the National Assembly on how to go about it.

He spoke on Monday at the opening ceremony of the Conference and Retreat for senior police officers which held at Landmark Event Centre, New Owerri, where he further proposed increased participation of the State Governments, the multinational companies and private sector operators in the funding of the police for better effect.

Also  same day, Governor Uzodimma said that the concept of “Operation Udoka” by the Military to rid the South East of crimes and criminality is a welcome idea as long as those who will drive it should be properly educated, equipped and guided to operate within rules of international engagement.

He told the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher G. Musa and his entourage on a courtesy call on him at the Government House Owerri that the sustainability of members of the proposed “Operation Udoka’ requires that they must be sincere and honest in discharging their duties.

The Chief of Defence Staff was accompanied by the GOC 82 Division, Enugu and other top ranking officers in the military.

Governor Uzodimma told the CDS that “sit-at-home is not the major problem now in South East, but what the people are suffering from is fear of the unknown resulting from experiences of what happened at the beginning of the banditry, violence and mayhem in the State.”

He appealed to the army and other security agencies to do all within their reach to eradicate banditry, vandalism and kidnapping and help to restore peace in Imo State and Southeast in general.

On the part of the State Government, the Governor assured of getting the buy in of the citizens to cooperate with the security to restore peace.

He requested the army to continue to work hard to reduce the spate of Crude oil theft to the barest minimum, “bring back the crude oil production to its highest,” saying that “this is possible through the combined efforts of Armed Forces and the police working together.”

The Governor reminded the Defence Chief that “it is not true that the only news that comes out of Imo State is banditry, criminality and violence but lots of other positive news also come from the State.”

While he commended the Army for their efforts in containing banditry, violence, kidnapping and other vices in Imo State and other Southeast States in general, the Governor regretted that some of their men have had to pay the supreme price while carrying out their duties.

He lauded the synergy between all the security agencies in Imo State, which he said has yielded a lot of positive results in their operation.

Earlier, General Musa said he came to Imo to see the troops in the State to ensure they do their duties by “observing the rules of engagement,” and “to be part and support the ongoing Police Conference in Imo State and to reaffirm that we are one in the fight and security of Nigeria.”

He said he was aware of the activities of the criminal elements in Imo State and Southeast in general and assured the Governor that the military is “tackling them to achieve total peace and preserve unity of Nigeria.”

He congratulated the Governor on what he said is the remarkable improvement in the development of the State, adding that “most causes of restiveness and crime and other vices stem from lack of good governance.” He thanked the Governor for giving Imo people good governance.

The CDS appreciated the Governor for his numerous assistance to the Army and other security agencies, noting that “democracy can only thrive in the sphere of good governance.”

While General Musa  said that “the Army will never tolerate any attempt at truncating the democracy in Nigeria,” he announced the establishment of the “Operation Udoka’ to help flush out the activities of bandits and  stop the sit-at-home menace in the Southeast.

He assured of professionalism among the security agencies, saying that “the security leadership will not tolerate any infractions by any of their men because their men are expected to be part of the solution and not of the problems.”

He further expressed gratitude and appreciation President Ahmed Bola Tinubu for his assistants to all the security agencies.

He also wished Governor Uzodimma the very best in the upcoming governorship election in Imo State and promised that “the security agencies will provide all necessary measures that will guarantee free, fair and credible elections.”

At the Police Conference and Retreat with the theme: Fostering economic prosperity, social integration and political development through enhanced internal security mechanism, Governor Uzodimma told the galaxy of police chiefs, key officers from sister agencies and other guests that the perception that the Nigerian Police do well outside the country and perform poorly in the country should be of concern to all.

In his remarks, Governor Uzodimma thanked the police leadership for their choice of Imo State for the event and commended the police for their commitment to peace in Nigeria in general and Imo State in particular, saying “working in concert with other security agencies, the police demonstrated an uncommon commitment in the discharge of their constitutional duties.”

“Regrettably, some officers paid the supreme price in the course of this onerous assignment. Imo people, and indeed all Nigerians will remain eternally grateful to them for their gallantry and invaluable sacrifice. My administration will continue to stand by the families of such fallen heroes.

“The Imo example clearly underscores the critical role the police play in the maintenance of law and order in our dear country, Nigeria. This is why I consider your theme for this conference, to wit: ‘Fostering national unity through enhanced internal security mechanism,’ very apt.”

Governor Uzodimma said that an institution like the police is, therefore, a sine qua non for national unity because its primary, constitutional duty is to keep the country safe, insisting that because national unity is best fostered in an atmosphere of peace, “National unity cannot thrive in an atmosphere of violence and criminality.”

Governor Uzodimma who highlighted the challenges that cause the police not to perform optimally in Nigeria as against their performance outside, solicited for better attention to their pay, welfare and funding.

In bringing to the fore the issue of police pay, the Governor said it has become a recalling decimal and that the time has come to deal with it once and for all.

He challenged the officers to use the Retreat to look at all proposals on the police pay, welfare and funding.

Governor Uzodimma said: “For some time, there had been debates as to what we pay our policemen and other welfare packages. Even last week, some senators canvassed increased salaries and other welfare packages for our policemen. I can’t agree less. I know that there is an insurance scheme for our policemen. But, I don’t know if the amount being paid to bereaved families is adequate enough. However, I am confident that the police high command and the federal government are capable of responding to these issues.

“On the other hand, I am suggesting that those of us who benefit from the services and sacrifices of the police should also offer them some incentives to motivate them to serve us better. I am referring to the state governments.

“I may not have all the details, but I strongly suspect that our police are both underfunded and under equipped. They could also do with additional training and more incentives. The evidence does not appear difficult to find. From vehicles to equipment, including ammunition, communication gadgets, uniforms, and protective gears, the police are crying for more, and I think they deserve it.

“In this regard, I  see every need to fortify our policemen and women with additional high technology driven  amphibious skills in air and marine policing. This will equip them to effectively combat such major threats to our internal security, such as crude oil theft, cyber crime, and unbridled banditry. As we all know, these are real modern- day existential threats to our nationhood.

“I  think the time has come for us as leaders  to walk our talks. There is an urgent need to demonstrate concrete commitment to the welfare and operational capacity of the police. My submission here is that the National Assembly should come up with a bill for “a special police fund.” Under this arrangement, a special percentage from the federation account should be reserved for continuous and sufficient funding of the police. Equally, high network corporate bodies, including banks, should be made to mandatorily contribute a specified percentage of their annual profit to the police fund. Needless to add, that enhancing internal security to foster national unity should not be the concern of the government alone. High- profile corporate citizens should be concerned as well.

“I am happy to report to you that in Imo State, we, as a government, have been doing our best to assist all the security agencies working in the state. Like I alluded to during my opening remarks, those who paid the supreme price in line of duties in the state have not been abandoned by this administration. Such gestures will certainly augment the official packages for these men and women who are sacrificing their all for the protection of our lives and properties. We are also doing our best in providing the police with necessary equipment and logistics, such as patrol vehicles, communication gadgets, and armoured vehicles.

“As for their role in fostering national unity through enhanced internal security mechanism, there is no doubt that they have the will to do what is expected of them like other security agencies. What is maybe lacking is the efficient synergy among these agencies. We have had cause in the past to worry about the apparent and unnecessary rivalry among them. I don’t believe that kind of attitude will yield the results we need as a nation. Instead, working together in harmony and synergy will definitely get us to where we want to be.

“As we already know, the police are the closest security agency to the civilian populace, such that they have a relationship that easily assists them in carrying out their duties. The civilians trust the police the more, and the police understand the nuances of the civilians. So, the police are in a far better position to sustain national unity through enhanced internal security mechanisms.

“While I leave you to work on these suggestions at your technical sessions, let me assure you that the government of Imo State will continue to assist the security agencies, including the police, in the discharge of their constitutional duties. In the next couple of days, we shall be holding our governorship elections in the state. I charge you to be professional, as always, in the exercise of your assignment. Do not give room to hoodlums to disrupt the election. Just take charge and do your jobs as prescribed by the Constitution.

On that note, I wish you a very successful and fruitful deliberation.”

Governor Uzodimma said though a lot had been said about the image of the police, “if truth must be told, we deserve the police that we have.”

“If we have an unruly police, then we must have played a role in creating them, and we should have a share of the blame. If we have an efficient police force, it is also because we encourage them. At times, I wonder why our police officers excel during foreign missions and fall short here at home. Could it be due to the environment or the motivation and incentives? That is what we need to explore as policy makers.”

The governor noted that the government has a lot of role to play in ensuring that the police perform well in a given environment where the rights of the citizens are guaranteed under the Constitution.

His words: “For emphasis, however, let me say that internal security offers citizens the opportunity to enjoy the unfettered rights of the freedoms guaranteed in our constitution and the rule of law which is the irreducible minimum factor for national unity. Now, It is the duty of the government to ensure that internal security is guaranteed for the citizenry so that nationhood can have a healthy environment to thrive. To achieve this, the government empowers the police, by law, to secure the country for the citizens. This is an apt situation of the role of the police in Fostering National Unity through enhanced internal security.

“To this end, let us examine how the Nigerian police have fared in this regard. There are two sides to scrutinize here. The first is to look at the law establishing the Nigerian police and the second is to see the extent the police have gone in keeping faith with those statues.

“A creation of the constitution, under Section 214, the police have omnibus roles in both the protection of lives and property and the prevention of crime generally. According to section four of the Police Act, the duties of the Police include:

  1. Prevention and detection of crime.
  2. Apprehension of offenders.
  3. Preservation of law and order.
  4. Protection of lives and property.
  5. Due enforcement of laws and regulations whenever they are directly charged.
  6. Performance of such military duties within and outside Nigeria when necessary.

“With the aforementioned duties expected of the police, there is no doubt that they have the most crucial role to play in ‘Fostering National Unity through Enhanced Internal Security Mechanisms’, which is the theme of this conference. The natural question, therefore, is whether the police have been adequately empowered in terms of personnel, training, and logistics to perform this crucial role? This scrutiny is needful because having the relevant laws is important, but adequately equipping the police for the onerous task is even more important.

“Since 1964, when we had the first indigenous Inspector General of Police (IGP), we have had 22 IGPs, including the present one. I can say without fear of equivocation that all the IGPs have worked very hard to enhance the operational capacity of the force. I also know that countless dedicated and patriotic officers and men who continue to make efforts to protect lives and property will always be found   in the police force.”

In President Tinubu’s remarks presented by the Minister of Police Affairs, Sen. Ibrahim Gaidam, he also shared in Governor Uzodimma’s views about a better funding, wage and welfare of the police and assured of his administration’s commitment to the ideals of the institution in the interest of the Nigerian society.

The Acting Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun in his welcome address recommitted himself to leading a police that the personnel would not only be properly taken care of, but have the necessary skills and knowledge to discharge their duties.

He announced that President Tinubu has given the police the go ahead to set up a Special Investigation Squad (SIS) which he said will aid them in discharging their duties.

President of INTERPOL, Ahmed Nasir Al Raisi who was the keynote speaker canvassed for a Nigerian Police that would be relevant in the global scheme of things as regards contemporary crimes and criminality.

Those who gave goodwill messages include: The Chief of Defence Staff, the National Security Adviser, Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Chairman, House Committee on Police Affairs, among others.

Timi Frank Cautions President Tinubu To Watch Out For Wike, Urges His Sack

0

By Ayodele Oni

As reactions trail the political crisis in Rivers state, a former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has advised President Bola Tinubu, to sack the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

He said Wike’s sack is inevitable as he has been fingered to be  mastermind of a plot to impeach the Governor of Rivers State, Siminilaye  Fubara.

Frank in a statement in Abuja, on Tuesday, condemned the action of the police in tear-gassing and pouring water on Governor Fubara, who is supposed to be the Chief Security Officer of the state.

He also called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to urgently remove the Commissioner of Police in Rivers state, over the partisan action of his men against the elected Governor of the State.

He insisted that Wike’s sack has become necessary to stop him from bringing Tinubu’s government into disrepute and destroying the APC.

“Already Wike has started demolishing houses and revoking ownership of landed property in Abuja to anger Nigerians, cause Tinubu to be hated and portray the APC’s administration as wicked and anti-people.

“By the time Tinubu will realize it, it will be too late because Wike would have destroyed his government to make way for him to contest the post of President in 2027.

“All Wike is after good governance, he has started preparation for 2027 presidency. So he’s very desperate and he will do everything to please Tinubu, but at the same time he is going to destroy the government if they do not call him to order.

“If Wike loves Tinubu and believes in his administration, let him officially join the APC and become a card-carrying member of the party.

“But he has refused to do so because he wants to destroy the APC to enable him contest for presidency in 2027, using the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party  (PDP). He has refused to defect to APC because of his evil agenda.

“Tinubu and APC should not only be wary, but should urgently call on Wike to stop this madness in River State, otherwise, it will backfire.

“Wike campaigned for Fubara and claimed he was the best among all the other candidates for the governorship election. But suddenly, Fubara is now his enemy because Fubara is no longer taking directives from him being a dictator who is after Rivers’ money.

“If they allow Wike to succeed, to use federal might to illegally remove Fubara as governor, at the end of the day, sitting governors will become vegetables like local government chairmen in state.”

Parliamentary Workers Shut Down Assemblies, Insist On Autonomy For Legislature

By Ayodele Oni

The strike action embarked upon by Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), which enters the second day on Tuesday, has paralysed activities at the National and State Assemblies.

As at last count, not less than 10 states including Ekiti, Ondo, Sokoto, Nasarawa, Rivers Edo Delta among others have joined the strike with some of the gates to the assemblies firmly locked to prevent any legislative duty.

PASAN is demanding for, among others  financial autonomy for the states assembly.

Nasarawa state chairman of PASAN,  Suleiman Oshafu, who spoke in Lafia, said that the strike is total while urging the state governors to do the needful by implementing financial autonomy for State Houses of Assembly.

“We are here today to embark on strike over financial autonomy for the State Houses of Assembly. As financial autonomy will promote accountability, transparency and good governance in the country.”

Oshafu recalled that former President Muhammadu Buhari signed an Executive Order granting the financial autonomy of the state assemblies in 2020.

“What we want from the Government is that all state legislature must be granted financial autonomy. This strike is nationwide and is indefinite strike.”

He urged members of the association to stay at home until further directive from the national leadership of the association and be law abiding.

Members of the Sokoto State Chapter of the PASAN,  joined their counterparts nationwide as they embarked on an indefinite strike, shutting down the State House of Assembly complex.

Its Chairman, Mr Abubakar Yusuf, while addressing newsmen in Sokoto, explained that the strike was an extension of their ongoing struggle that began in 2020.

He said, “As you may recall, we took similar action in 2020. Following interventions from various sectors, we reached an agreement promising full financial autonomy for the legislative arm of government.

“This order faced challenges from state governors in the Supreme Court. After resolving the legal complexities, the order was reaffirmed, and the former president initiated a committee for its full implementation. This progress has stalled following transition of government.”

Yusuf added that the association has patiently awaited progress on the government promises and gave it a 21-day ultimatum to address their concerns.

“Regrettably, no action was taken. Consequently, we have taken the step of indefinitely locking all State Assemblies, including the National Assembly, until our demands for full implementation are met.”

Yusuf said that the association’s demands encompassed the implementation of CONCLESS conditions of service and the payment of parliamentary staff outfit allowances.

According to him, the struggle was not solely for the benefit of the parliamentary staff, adding, “it is driven by a national interest in ensuring the government’s success in the fight against corruption.”

In some states, members of the association carried different placards reading: “No going back on financial autonomy”; “Financial autonomy is constitutionally guaranteed”; “Give us our financial autonomy now”; “No Autonomy, no legislator and no work”; and “Autonomy the only solution to vibrant legislation,” among others.

Fmr NBA President Agbakoba Says Judiciary Due For Reformation

0

By Ayodele Oni

A former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olisa Agbakoba, (SAN), has advised that the remarks by the retired Justice Musa Dattijo Mohammed should form the basis for reform of the Judiciary.

Agbakoba is of the view that the remarks were not targeted at the incumbent Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, as corruption the retired Justice made mention of, has been embedded at the apex court for so long.

According to him, the judiciary remains the most undemocratic arm of government.

Agbakoba stated this while reacting to the speech of retired Justice Musa Dattijo Muhammad at his valedictory session held last week Friday in Abuja.

In an interview on Arise News Agbakoba said the National Judicial Council (NJC) needs to take note of the points that were raised by Justice Dattijo in order to address the decay in Nigeria’s judicial system.

Agbakoba also emphasized that Dattijo’s speech rather than impugning the character of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, it should be used to address inconsistencies of the office in itself.

The former NBA Chairman stated that the corruption that Dattijo mentioned in his speech was also mentioned by Justice Samson Uwaifo in his valedictory speech in 2004, and as such, this had been a long-standing issue.

“I think what lessons we should draw from what Justice Dattijo had said is to implement a report that was put together by the, in my view, perhaps the most reformist CJN in Nigeria, that is, the late Justice Dahiru Mustapha. If this report is implemented, it will take care of all the issues.

“Of the three arms of government- the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary, the most undemocratic is actually the judiciary, so that’s where the problem is.

“So, what I would recommend to the current NJC is to have a very good look at the report, update it, and absolutely remove the powers of the CJN to be everywhere.

“The difference between a judge of the high court and the CJN is like God in heaven and somebody on earth. We need to really really take the opportunity of the lesson I think Dattijo Muhammed’s valedictory- which has been the most candid- has given us.

“It’s to understand where we are in the judiciary, and if we want to reverse judicial failure, then the current NJC must implement it.

“The problem with judges is that they have no clue as to judicial administration versus administration of justice.”

“Public opinion of the judiciary is at its lowest ebb, and I think that this is something that the judiciary ought to take very seriously. They ought to take the points made by Justice Dattijo Mohammed extremely seriously.”

FG Plans N750 To $ By December

0
The Chairman of the Presidential Tax Reform committee, Taiwo Oyedele, has disclosed that the federal government is planning to ensure that N750 is exchanged for the dollar by December this year.
Recall that Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, said last week that the federal government is expecting $10 billion Forex injection to clear the current backlogue responsible for the volatility being experienced in the market.
Not a few market analysts insist that this is impossible considering the current volatility in the Forex market which has pushed up the value of the American currency in both parallel and I & E windows.
The Nigerian currency reached its lowest point last week after the dollar was traded for N1, 350 at the parallel market.
But the tax reform boss told Bloomberg that plans are in the offing to ensure that naira gained to N750 to the dollar within two months.
According to Oyedele, the plan includes
a crackdown on illegal currency trading, to reduce the 45 percent gap between the official and black-market rate the dollar is sold in the country.
He explained that the government would also clear backlogs of dollar demand estimated at around $6.7 billion, bolster the naira forward market, and set transparent rules for the operations of the official market.
The federal government also aims “ to expand the official market to include all legitimate transactions, while snuffing out the illicit “black market” for foreign currency, “ he said.
Oyedele also said, “We think all of that will happen before December, and maybe in a matter of a couple of weeks we will begin to see the results, such that before the end of the calendar year, naira should find its true value, not the one that is being done currently in the parallel market “
Edun had while responding to the falling value of the naira to the dollar said
the country was expecting about $10bn inflows in the nearest term, which would help to clear foreign exchange backlog and stabilise the naira

Atiku Remains One Of The Worst Examples Of Kleptocracy In Africa –  Presidency

0

In a stinging response to the Press Conference addressed by the Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, on the Supreme Court Judgement which affirmed the victory of President Bola Tinubu over him,  the Presidency, in a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Presidential Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, advised Atiku to just “go away” because his Presidential ambition is forever doomed.

Former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party Presidential candidate in last election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, unraveled on Monday at a press conference in Abuja where he finally found his voice after more than 96 hours to respond to his trouncing at the Supreme Court in a landmark judgment on his grossly incompetent election petition appeal.

We were wrong to expect that Atiku at 77 would play the statesman and sportsman and accept, with equanimity, the verdict of the highest court and the people of Nigeria.

Instead, he unashamedly constituted himself into a demagogue and anarchist in the way and manner he sought to pull down and delegitimize all the institutions of State, all in a futile bid to achieve what he could not get via the ballot box.

At his press conference where he laboured, in vain, to once again manipulate public opinion and blame the judiciary for his self-inflicted defeat in the 25 February Presidential election, Alhaji Atiku launched a diatribe against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and judiciary, particularly our apex court, for not bending the law and the constitution to satisfy his whims and caprices.

Atiku tried very hard to perfect his act of misinformation by seeking to lay claim to faux morality and higher ideals when in actual fact his entire life is antithetical to any higher ideals.

For instance, Atiku claimed he worked along with others to end military rule in Nigeria when he was known to be in bed with the same junta who held democracy hostage and incarcerated his mentor, Major-General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua (rtd), till death. He distanced himself from him while in detention to keep alive his governorship ambition on the platform of one of those inglorious Abacha political parties.

Atiku’s brand of politics is such that once an electoral process or election does not go his way or pave the way for his victory, democracy becomes dysfunctional and must therefore be imperiled. For him, democracy should either go his way or the highway.

The PDP candidate was uncharitable and pugnacious in his choice of words and his view about Nigeria. We can only imagine the level of frustration that could make a former Vice President of Nigeria to hold such pessimistic view of a country where he once occupied the second highest position. The PDP candidate said Nigeria is doomed just because he failed to achieve his personal ambition.

We want to tell Alhaji Atiku this: Nigeria is not doomed. It is only Atiku’s inordinate ambition to be President that is doomed. Nigeria is moving forward and set to achieve its manifest destiny as one of the most respected and successful nations of the world under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Contrary to Atiku’s gloomy submission on our democracy, we are excited to tell the world that our democracy is thriving and blossoming. It is the reason, for the first time, since 1999 the character of our National Assembly and its outlook reflect the diversity and plurality of the choices and preferences of voters as a rainbow coalition of different parties as opposed to the practice in the past where just two parties dominated the national parliament.

In today’s Nigeria, votes count. No amount of deliberate distortions of facts about our recent election by Alhaji Atiku and his partner, Peter Obi can vitiate the continuous improvement of our electoral process which local and international observers have hailed. As declared by the Supreme Court, IReV was not designed as an online collation centre. It was simply a public viewing centre for results.

PDP and Atiku, including Peter Obi’s faction of Labour Party cannot continue to insist on their own reality against commonsense, logic and the law.

Atiku and his army of hirelings knew why they lost the election. The PDP candidate lost because Nigerians preferred Bola Ahmed Tinubu and voted for him to be president. Tinubu, along with his APC, won because he offered a better vision for our country’s future. The All Progressives Congress as a united and formidable party which ran a well-coordinated campaign with his rank and file intact.

Atiku lost because he went into a major election with a fragmented and tattered umbrella that could not hold together. There was no way Atiku and PDP could have won the election with the party platform under which he contested broken into four parts. If Atiku was not harboring a delusion of grandeur, we wonder how he could have envisaged any possible pathway to victory with Mr. Peter Obi’s Labour Party, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s NNPP and PDP G-5 Governors who took away possible PDP votes, while the APC went into the election as a strong, viable and unified entity.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar claims he loves Nigeria and embraces “integrity” so much. We found such claim to be sheer hypocrisy as Atiku remains one of the worst examples of kleptocracy in Africa. The US Congress lists Atiku’s money laundering as one of the very rare cases of corruption at the highest level of governance in the world.

His avarice sent congressman William Jefferson to jail after the FBI busted a bribery scandal in which Atiku was involved from head to toe and for which he was marked down by the U.S. agency.

Now as we get to the proper business of governance after Atiku’s unwarranted distraction, we have picked some clear lessons going forward. One is that our institutions must be strengthened on diligent and sturdy wings, enough to withstand and identify from afar rabble-rousers who masquerade as statesmen.

Second, our institutions must also ensure that corrupt, desperate, self-serving serial losers should not have a space in our democracy. Because if they don’t win the battle, they might burn the nation.

We want to advise Atiku that after over three decades of elusive bid for the Presidency of Nigeria, he must now end his unprofitable bid and go away from any venture that will further pollute the political atmosphere and national harmony.

Rivers Crisis: Gov Fubara Must Be Respected- Sen. Abe

0

Senator Magnus Abe has reacted to the attack on Governor Similaye Fubara by the police on Monday.

Governor Fubara had alleged that he was fired at and teargassed by some police officers while on an inspection visit to the State House of Assembly earlier today.

The governor visited the Assembly few hours after some lawmakers tried to impeach him.

The political crisis rocking the oil rich state has been blamed on the struggle for the control of the soul of the state by the governor, and Nyesom Wike his predecessor, now FCT minister.

It was on Wike’s back, we recall that Governor Fubura rode to the prestigious office that he now occupied, but the duo appears to have gone their separate ways.

On Monday, the clash between supporters of the two leaders led to the attack on the governor, as some riot policemen tried to disperse the crowd with teargas.

The governor said he was a major target for assassination.

Reacting, Abe, a governorship candidate of the SDP in the governorship election said Fubara must be respected, because there cannot be two governors in the state.

He condemned the attack on Governor Fubara, stressing that the governor has immunity.

According to the senator,
“As seen in trending videos in the media space, the direct gunshots and tear-gassing on the person of the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Similayi Fubara, who is the Chief security officer of the state, was wrong. This is beyond politics, and I publicly condemn it.

“I am particularly saddened by the destruction of our beloved house of parliament, and a valuable state asset. This is unacceptable.

“I believe that in the interest of the state, the Nigerian police needs to have a deeper conversation with the Governor who is the current Chief security officer and the only Rivers man that currently enjoys constitutional immunity.

“There can be only one Governor at a time, so whatever our political differences, we must look for ways to resolve them without jeopardising the peace and security of our fellow citizens.
