Court Orders INEC To Register ADA

A Federal High Court in Abuja has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to register  the All Democratic Alliance, ADA as a political party in the country.

The court, in a judgment delivered by Justice Peter Lifu on Monday also ordered the electoral body to release its Access Code for the registration of the party to the Akin Rickett-led leadership, which it said it recognised.

Another group led by Umar Ado is laying claim to the leadership of the party, and had earlier been granted access code  by the electoral umpire.

Challenging INEC’s decision, the Ricket-led group had approached the court to overturn the decision, it also prayed the court to grant some reliefs, which include that; the information uploaded into INEC’s portal by Umar Ardo or any other person on behalf of ADA, was in violation of the extant laws, and at variance with its letter of intent to INEC to be registered as a political party.

The group also prayed the court to order INEC to register the political association as a political party in the country and be issued a certificate of registration.

Ruling on the suit, Justice Lify declared that the commission’s action was illegal and wrong, null and void, it ordered INEC to open its portal for a period of one week to enable the plaintiff upload necessary documents, including membership register.

Justice Lifu also ordered INEC to register ADA with immediate effect, having met the requirements to become a political party in the country.

WISTA Demands Actionable Maritime Policies For Sustainable Growth

 The President of the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association, WISTA Nigeria, Dr. Odunayo Ani, has called for stronger collaboration among governments, regulators and industry stakeholders to ensure that Africa’s maritime and Blue Economy policies translate into measurable outcomes that promote inclusive growth, enhanced trade and sustainable development.

Dr. Ani who said this at the 8th WISTA Africa Regional Conference, hosted by WISTA Nigeria in Lagos under the theme, “From Policy to Progress: Women Delivering Africa’s Shipping and Trade Energy Future,” also said Africa’s Blue Economy presents enormous opportunities to strengthen trade corridors, improve maritime connectivity and unlock economic prosperity through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“Policy must translate into measurable impact, while collaboration must drive innovation. Together, we can build a more resilient, competitive and inclusive maritime industry for Africa,” she said.

She also used the opportunity to appreciate the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), the International Maritime Organization (IMO), WISTA International and other partners for supporting the conference.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola CON called for urgent action to eliminate the barriers that limit women participation emphasising that women are already making significant contributions towards the development of the maritime industry.

Represented by the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics in the ministry, Hajia Kalthum Ibrahim, Oyetolasaid “the challenge before us is to remove the barriers that still limit participation and to create the partnerships that enable women to enter, thrive and lead within the industry. We must invest in skills development, strengthen institutions, leverage technology, deepen regional cooperation and create conditions that allow women and young people to contribute meaningfully to the sector’s goals”.

Also speaking, the Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to promoting gender inclusion and sustainable growth within the maritime industry.

“NIMASA remains a proud partner of WISTA and will continue to support initiatives that promote gender inclusion, professional excellence and sustainable maritime development. Collaboration among governments, industry stakeholders and professional associations remain essential to unlocking Africa’s maritime potential,” Mobereola stated.

In his keynote presentation, maritime strategist and former Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, challenged African governments to move beyond policy formulation to practical implementation, stressing that the continent has signed numerous international conventions, regional agreements and maritime strategies but has yet to fully unlock their economic benefits through deliberate execution.

“Africa must deliberately move from signing policies to building institutions, infrastructure and capacity. We must also create greater opportunities for women to participate in maritime leadership because experience has shown that women bring stability to decision-making and are indispensable to the future of Africa’s maritime industry,”he said.

Dr. Peterside noted that shipping drives global trade, while trade depends on efficient ports, modern infrastructure, reliable institutions and a skilled maritime workforce. He described Africa’s transition to a greener maritime industry as an opportunity to modernise ports, strengthen indigenous shipping capacity, develop regional logistics networks, attract green investments and create employment for young Africans.

He further advocated stronger enforcement of maritime policies, greater institutional coordination, increased investment in maritime education and innovative financing models to position Africa for greater competitiveness in global shipping.

In his goodwill message, the Oniru of Iru Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, CON, Abisogun II, described the Blue Economy as one of Africa’s greatest opportunities for sustainable development, stressing that women have consistently played pivotal roles in commerce, entrepreneurship and community development across the continent. He commended WISTA Africa and WISTA Nigeria for creating a platform that promotes dialogue, collaboration and practical solutions for the maritime sector.

Earlier, Chairperson of the Convention Planning Committee, Dr. Oma Ofodile, while welcoming  delegates from across Africa and beyond, described the conference as a historic milestone for WISTA Nigeria. She commended the organising committee, partners and volunteers for delivering a successful conference and urged participants to ensure that discussions translate into practical actions capable of advancing Africa’s maritime industry.

A high-level plenary session themed “From Commitment to Delivery: Maritime Policy, Net-Zero Transitions and Trade in Africa: Bridging the Gap between What Africa Signs and What Africa Builds,” examined practical strategies for transforming Africa’s maritime commitments into tangible development outcomes. Panelists emphasised the need for sustained investment in port infrastructure, stronger policy implementation, indigenous shipping capacity, regional collaboration, trade facilitation and climate-resilient maritime systems. They agreed that unlocking the full potential of Africa’s Blue Economy will require coordinated action by governments, regulators, the private sector and development partners to enhance the continent’s competitiveness in global shipping and trade.

2027: NDC Uploads Obi’s Name On INEC Portal As Legal Battle Continues

Embattled opposition political party, the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC has uploaded the name of Peter Obi the party’s presidential candidate for next year’s election on the INEC portal.

NDC’s National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson made the revelation in a post on his verified X handle on Tuesday, saying the electoral umpire has opened its portal to the party to upload the credentials of its candidates for the 2027 general election.

Senator Dickson said the name of NDC vice presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso will also be uploaded on the portal in no time, stressing that INEC opened its portal to the party after it received a letter of Stay of Execution on a judgment of a federal High Court, Lokoja, Kogi state, last week directing INEC to de-register the party.

The judgment has elicited trenchant criticism from not a few Nigerians who accused the federal government of trying to shut the door on some opposition political parties in the country, to prevent them from participating in the 2027 election.

Critics of the Tinubu’s administration also accused his government of trying to choke the democratic space against candidates and political parties, which it believe has the capacity to pose a serious challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC quest to return to power next year.

Dickson, a former Governor of Bayelsa state however stated in his social media post today that INEC may have decided to allow the party to upload the credentials of its presidential and other NDC  candidates after it was notified that the party had filed an objection suit challenging last weeks order for it to be de-register from INEC’s list of political parties in the country.

According to Senator Dickson, the electoral umpire must ensure that INEC must follow the law and ensure that any decision it takes against the party is in line with the nation’s extant law and  “legally sensible.”.

“Today, the NDC has filed an appeal against the ruling as well as a stay of execution/injunction, which has been served with a covering letter to the INEC chairman and his team to do what is right according to law and what is legally sensible,” the NDC leader said.

“The Nigeria Democratic Congress has come to stay and remains a duly registered party in Nigeria which has participated in all the political processes so far.

“Nomination processes have already been concluded and, in the eyes of the law, candidates have already emerged from the party for all offices across the country in primaries observed, monitored and recorded by INEC.

“What is left is the administrative process of submitting the names to INEC, and we have been granted access to the portal to upload our qualified candidates,” Dickson stated, adding that the process to upload other NDC qualified candidates on INEC’s portal is ongoing .

“My name and that of the presidential candidate have been uploaded to the INEC portal, while that of the vice presidential candidate will be done tomorrow upon completion of the deposition. The process is also ongoing for other candidates,” he said.

Ondo state commissioner for women affairs, Seun Osamaye, All Progressives Congress (APC) Women Leader, Princess Oluwayemisi Iji-Ayeola, and  youth leader, Ojo Bright on Monday led protest over alteration of lists of candidates for the national Assembly election in Ondo state due for next year.

 

The protest, championed by the women’s wing of the APC in Ondo State blocked the busy Ilesha-Owo Expressway, protesting the National Assembly candidates’ list released by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).

 

Dressed in white attire, the women prevented the free flow of traffic for some hours.

 

The protest also caused a traffic gridlock that temporarily delayed the convoy of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who was returning from Osogbo, Osun State.

 

Armed with different placards, the women said they would not accept the imposition of candidates on the party by the NWC.

 

Some of the placards read ” We Reject Abuja List”, “We Stand by Ondo State Congress Results“, ” We Say No to Imposition” and “Ondo State on Fire”

 

They demanded the withdrawal of the list and the reinstatement of what they described as the authentic candidates who emerged from the party’s May primaries.

 

The demonstrators accused the party leadership of replacing candidates who won the primaries, alleging that the list released by the NWC did not reflect the outcome of the ward and local government elections conducted across the state’s 203 wards.

 

The APC had given return tickets to seven out of nine members of the House of Representatives and two serving senators in the state, prompting the protest.

 

Addressing the protesters, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, APC Women Leader, Princess Oluwayemisi Iji-Ayeola, and Ojo Bright, said the APC primaries held in various constituencies in the state, were peaceful and the results from those primaries must be upheld by the leadership of the party.

 

Osamaye maintained  that the women who are members of the APC, rejected the names released by the NWC of the party despite the outcome of the primaries, which were known to all the citizens of the state.

 

”We have come out to express our displeasure with the fake list being circulated. We consider it fake because it does not reflect the mandate of the people.

 

“It does not reflect the votes counted across the 203 wards of Ondo State. We know those we voted for.

 

“We know those we counted that won the elections. So why does the list being circulated online not reflect the people’s mandate?

 

“That is the question we have come to ask this afternoon. It is a peaceful protest. We say no to the mago-mago appeal. We say no to fake appeal.

 

“We say no to corner-corner appeal. People’s votes should count. We voted massively for our candidates, and it should reflect in the list that has been pasted. But what we are seeing online does not reflect what we voted for, and that is why we have come today.”

 

Among those affected are, Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (SAN) replaced Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti as the APC candidate for Ondo Central Senatorial District, while Senator Olajide Ipinsagba emerged in place of Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye for Ondo North Senatorial District. The Ondo South Senatorial ticket was unaffected by the review with Hon. Kekemeke as candidate.

 

In the House of Representatives, Donald  Ojogo replaced Mr. Akingboye Leke for Ilaje/Ese Odo Federal Constituency, while Hon. Festus Olarewaju Akingbaso displaced Hon. Rasaq Obe in Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency among others.

The Federal Government has put in place measures to protect the lifespan of the newly constructed Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and some bridges in Lagos state.

 

The Federal Ministry of Works  announced “a ban on commercial motorcycles and tricycles on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.”

 

The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) stated that the restriction, which takes effect this week, was announced in a statement by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mr Olufemi Dare.

 

Dare explained that the decision was introduced “to protect the newly constructed superhighway from misuse and deterioration.”

 

He pointed out that the measures were necessary to preserve the road and ensure its long-term sustainability.

 

The Federal Controller also warned that indiscriminate parking of trucks and articulated vehicles would no longer be permitted.

 

According to him, “the restriction applies to the coastal highway and all bridges across Lagos State.”

 

The ministry also prohibited the “indiscriminate disposal of refuse along highway corridors,” describing the practice as unacceptable.

 

Dare warned that offenders would face strict enforcement measures as authorities move to maintain order.

 

He disclosed that signages indicating the restrictions had already been installed along the highway.

 

Dare added that task force officials would be deployed to strategic locations to ensure compliance.

 

He described the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a “world-class infrastructure” requiring proper maintenance and protection.

 

The official urged all road users to comply with the directives in the interest of public safety.

 

He stressed that preserving the facility would enhance its lifespan and maintain its value to Nigerians.

A coordinated search by troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), has led to the rescue of 10 National Examinations Council (NECO) candidates and teachers abducted by suspected ISWAP terrorists during an attack on Lassa Community in Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

 

The Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, saying the attack occurred at about 9:00 a.m. while students of the Technical Secondary School were writing their NECO examinations.

 

According to the statement, the Theatre Command immediately activated a coordinated search and rescue mission by deploying ground troops alongside strike aircraft and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms from the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI.

 

The operation led troops to make contact with the fleeing terrorists around Daggu, where a fierce gun battle ensued.

 

The troops, guided by aerial surveillance, successfully rescued 10 abducted victims unharmed.

 

The rescued candidates and teachers are currently receiving appropriate care and support.

 

Military authorities said efforts are ongoing to rescue the remaining abducted victims and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

 

During the encounter, troops reportedly outmanoeuvred the fleeing terrorists, inflicted casualties on them and captured seven motorcycles used during the attack, significantly disrupting the terrorists’ escape.

 

The operation, however, recorded casualties on the side of the security forces.

 

One soldier of Operation HADIN KAI and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) lost their lives during the intense exchange of fire.

 

“Their courage, selflessness and unwavering commitment exemplify the collective resolve of security forces and local volunteers who continue to risk their lives daily to protect innocent citizens and restore peace across the North East,” the statement said.

 

Operation HADIN KAI said troops, working with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders, have intensified operations across the area, while reinforcing security around vulnerable communities and schools to prevent similar attacks.

 

The military described the attack as another indication of the desperation of terrorist groups facing sustained pressure from ongoing counterterrorism operations, noting that the insurgents have increasingly resorted to targeting soft civilian locations.

 

Despite the attack, the military reaffirmed its determination to dismantle terrorist networks and sustain efforts aimed at restoring lasting peace and security across the North East.

 

The military also urged members of the public to remain vigilant, provide timely and credible intelligence to security agencies, and disregard unverified reports and misinformation regarding the incident while ongoing operations continue.

The Ogun State Government and the entire people of the ancient kingdom of Ipokia in Ogun State has been thrown into mourning following the sudden demise of the Onipokia of Ipokia Kingdom, Oba Yisa Sola Adeniyi Olaniyan (Orijajoogun I), who joined his forebears after a brief illness in the United States of America.

 

Though the cause of the illness that led to his death is yet to emerge, but sources from the Palace and his close associates confirmed that the revered

Traditional Ruler died in the USA on Saturday.

 

The death of the First Class King marks an end to his illustrious reign that was widely associated with cultural revival, community development, and strong engagement with  Nigerians in diaspora.

 

The late Oba Olaniyan ascended the throne as the 46th Onipokia of the ancient Ipokia Kingdom in August 2020.

 

Prior to his ascension to the Throne as Oba, he had built an impressive professional career in the United States, where he studied Criminal Justice at the University of Houston-Downtown, worked in the aviation and oil and gas sectors, and later became involved in renewable energy and community development.

 

He was widely regarded as a modern Traditional Ruler who successfully bridged his international exposure with the customs and traditions of his homeland.

 

Throughout his reign, he consistently advocated for education, youth empowerment and investment in Ipokia, and stronger connections between the Kingdom and Nigerians in the diaspora.

 

He was also known for promoting peace and unity across Yewaland, while encouraging economic development in the border community.

 

Beyond the Palace, Oba Olaniyan earned recognition as the founder of the Afro-Heritage Broadcasting & Entertainment Awards, AHBEA, an initiative established to celebrate African entertainment personalities and cultural icons across the world.

 

Friends and associates described him as approachable, visionary, generous, and deeply passionate about preserving Yoruba cultural heritage while embracing innovation.

 

His leadership style earned him admiration among traditional rulers, professionals, entertainers, and members of the Nigerian diaspora and also at the home front.

 

His contributions to cultural preservation and community development received national recognition in 2025 when he was inducted into the Nigerian Books of Record Hall of Fame, with the institution describing him as a Monarch whose leadership combined tradition with modern development.

 

News of his death has attracted tributes from several Traditional Rulers, Political Leaders, Community Groups, and indigenes of Ipokia both at home and abroad, with many describing him as a Monarch whose vision extended beyond the Palace to the overall development of his people.

 

The Palace is expected to announce funeral arrangements and traditional rites in line with the customs of the ancient Ipokia Kingdom in the coming days.

Detectives attached to the Edo State Police Command have foiled a bid by two suspects to rip off family members through fake kidnapping.

 

Already, the two suspects identified as Lucky Alabi, 48, and Taiye Enahoro, 37, both of Uneme Akpama Community, have been arrested, and are helping detectives in their investigations.

 

The Two men, allegedly, staged a fake kidnap in a bid to extort N4 million from the family of one of the suspects.

 

The arrest of the suspects, was carried out by operatives of the Igarra Division, following what the police described as “intelligence-led investigations.”

 

Confirming the arrest in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikioedem, revealed that the suspects were apprehended after detectives uncovered the alleged plot.

 

The command explained that investigations revealed the alleged scheme was carried out on June 23, when one of the suspects reportedly contacted Alabi’s relatives and demanded a ransom.

 

The statement partly read, “The Edo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that on 26th June, 2026, at about 1030hrs, operatives of Igarra Division arrested two suspects, Lucky Alabi ‘M’, 48 years, and Taiye Enahoro ‘M’, 37 years, both of Uneme Akpama Community, for conspiring to stage the fake kidnapping of Lucky Alabi.

 

“Acting on credible intelligence and through diligent investigative efforts, police operatives uncovered the deception and successfully arrested both suspects.

 

“Preliminary investigation reveals that the criminal plan was executed on 23rd June, 2026, when Taiye Enahoro allegedly placed several telephone calls to relatives of Lucky Alabi, falsely claiming that Alabi had been kidnapped and demanding the sum of N4,000,000 as ransom for his release.”

 

The police added that both suspects had admitted their involvement in the alleged crime and would be prosecuted after investigations were concluded.

 

The statement added, “The suspects have confessed to their respective roles in the staged kidnapping and will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation.”

 

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Monday Agbonika, warned members of the public against engaging in criminal deception, including staging kidnappings to extort money from relatives.

“The command reiterates its commitment to ensuring all persons involved in criminal acts are brought to justice,” the statement quoted the CP to have said.

He also alleged that the military personnel furnish him with advance information each time they are coming to attack him.

 

Notorious Kachalla Maha, boasted that he has the ability to kidnap top government officials, including governors.

 

The terrorist leader also claimed to have deep access to confidential security information, alleging that he receives advance notice of military operations before they are launched.

 

The bandit kingpin spoke in a recorded audio message that surfaced on Sunday and was shared by X user, Abdool Moh.

 

Maha, in the audio, accused authorities of refusing to release his arrested associates and seized cattle, insisting that the government’s actions had pushed him into escalating violence across affected areas.

 

He said repeated efforts to secure the release of his men were ignored by authorities, leaving him with no intention of backing down.

 

“You arrested my men, and I asked for their release. You refused. I promised that I would abduct many people, and I already have targets.

 

“I asked why my men and Aminu were arrested. Since they were not released, I don’t care if they send thousands of soldiers.

 

“I am not tired, and I will not stop until I leave this world. I can kidnap top government officials, even a State governor.

 

“I swear to Almighty God that all the security forces sent to attack my camp are my boys. They inform me whenever they are coming.

 

“I receive information about security strategies, including those involving the President. It is only because I allow them to operate. Otherwise, they would not even be able to use the roads,” he said.

 

None of his boastings or wild claims has been confirmed but the question remains: If the Security Operatives to arrest him are his boys who tip him off and provide him with information, why does he kill them every now and then”?

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has mourned the passing of the mother of the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru.

 

Also the Osun State chapter of the APC has consoled with Basiru over the death.

 

The Governor, in a statement on Monday by his spokesman, Olawale Rasheed, extendrd the governor’s heartfelt condolences to Senator Basiru, the entire Basiru family, and all loved ones of the deceased, describing the loss of a mother as a deeply painful experience.

 

 He urged the family to take solace in her exemplary life as a devoted Muslim and in the enduring legacy of faith, values, and service she left behind.

 

 Governor Adeleke prayed that Almighty Allah (SWT) forgives her shortcomings, accept her good deeds, grants her eternal rest in Al-Jannatul Firdaus, and comforts the bereaved family.

 

He also prayed for Senator Basiru and the entire family to be granted the strength and patience to bear the irreparable loss.

 

 “On behalf of the Government and the good people of Osun State, I extend my sincere condolences to Senator Ajibola Basiru and the entire Basiru family.

 

“May Almighty Allah grant Mama Al-Jannatul Firdaus and give the family the fortitude to bear this painful loss. Ameen.”

 

Osun APC, in a condolence message in Osogbo and signed by the party’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, described her passing as a painful loss, not only to the immediate family but also to all who came in contact with her exemplary life.

 

The party said her death was in accordance with the will of Almighty Allah, who gives and takes life at His appointed time, and urged the bereaved family to accept the loss with faith and total submission.

 

Noting that death is inevitable, the APC said the loss of a caring mother and respected matriarch leaves an irreplaceable vacuum.

 

It described the late Mrs Basiru as a virtuous woman whose life was defined by humility, kindness, discipline, and unwavering devotion to the service of Allah and humanity.

 

The party added that it stands in solidarity with Mr Basiru and his family at this difficult time, acknowledging the deep grief that accompanies the loss of a beloved mother.

 

It prayed that Almighty Allah grants the family the strength, patience, and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

 

The APC further noted that the greatest tribute to the deceased lies in the enduring legacy of good character, moral upbringing, and service to humanity she instilled in her children, particularly Mr Basiru, whose commitment to public service continues to inspire many within and beyond the party.
