Newly re-elected Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, has, both at once, comiserated with, and congratulated those who contested with him for the office of the Governor.

Uzodinma on Saturday, November 11, won an unprecedented victory at the Governorship polls by securing victory in all the 27 Local Government Areas of the State. He beat the Governorship Candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Samuel Anyanwu and that of the Labour Party, Chief Athan Achonu, to a very distant second and third places respectively to secure a second four-year term in office. The other 14 Candidates made little or no impact and did not count in the contest.

In a broadcast on Monday, November 13, 2023, where he dedicated his victory to God and Imo people, Uzodinma commiserated with those who contested with him. He also congratulated them, and posited that there was no loser. He extended an olive branch to them and urged them to join him in the development of the State.

Uzodinma: “I congratulate and commiserate with my brothers who contested the election with me. They did not lose, but Imo people won. This collective victory is for the good of the people and the progress of our State. I, therefore, call on them to join hands with me to continue to build the Imo of our collective dreams.”

Uzodinma, also, assured Imo people that he does not take his victory for granted, and promised not to let them down. Said he: I will not let Imo people down and I will serve with the utmost honesty and fear of God.”

The Governor will be sworn-in on January 15, 2024, for his second term in office.

Governor Uzodimma’s thank you broadcast read in full: “To the glory of God yesterday

( Sunday), the Independent National Electoral Commission declared me the winner of the governorship election held in our state on Saturday, November 11th, 2023.

“It is with a deep sense of humility, appreciation, and an abiding faith in God that I humbly accept the great honour and privilege to serve as your governor for a second term of four years.

“Because I  acknowledge God in everything I do and because I know that power comes from God, the first thing I did upon receiving the news of my victory yesterday was to proceed to the church to thank God for his goodness to me and Imo people.

“Of course, I can never thank God enough for doing it again for me. Almighty God has shown that He did it four years ago and has done it again,  to His honour and glory. So, I dedicate this victory to God Almighty and the good people of Imo State.

“I must  confess that I am truly humbled and deeply appreciative of every single vote I received across the 27 local government areas in the State. They all contributed to giving me a  clear, historic and unprecedented victory over my opponents.

“Ndi Imo umunnem, you spoke volumes through your massive votes. It is an emphatic vote of confidence in our performance in office in the last four years. You did not prevaricate in making that statement. You came out boldly and joyously to give me your votes. Thank you very much indeed.

“This historic statement is a clear confirmation that all the different stakeholders who had earlier endorsed me for the governorship election because of our  superlative performance in office have walked their talk.

“To all of you, including, but not limited to the youths, the women, traders, road transport workers, all other stakeholders,  particularly Imo  workers through their different unions such as the Nigerian Labour Congress(NLC), the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), and the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULEGE), I say thank you very much indeed. I  sincerely appreciate all of you. You have made me proud indeed. It is now my turn to keep my own side of the bargain.

“On that note, I wish to repeat my earlier covenant with  God and Imo people: ‘I will not let Imo people down and I will serve with utmost honesty and the fear of God.’

Let me be clear. Your message to me through your overwhelming endorsement is that you appreciate what I have done in office so far, and you want me to do even more. I heard you loud and clear. It is an invitation to do more and do better, and that is exactly what I will do.

“I do not take this victory lightly. I am aware of your desires  and expectations. In this regard, let me reassure you that I will continue to deliver the dividends of democracy to Imo people under our 3R mantra of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Recovery. I will continue to  provide a transparent,  accountable,  and transformative leadership to Imo people. I will continue to provide an inclusive platform for all Imo people to have a say on how they are governed. These are my promises, and I believe this was why you voted for me. And I will keep to the promises.

“In a democratic  contest  such as the one of last Saturday, only one person will emerge victorious.  Since it has pleased God and Imo people to confer that honour and privilege on me, I congratulate and commiserate with my brothers who contested the election with me. They did not lose, but Imo people won. This collective victory is for the good of the people and the progress of our State. I, therefore, call on all of them to join hands with me to continue to build the Imo of our collective dreams.

“Let me express my profound gratitude to  Imo people who trooped out in their thousands to cast their votes and make this a true democratic contest. I am truly proud of you all. I am immensely grateful to the agents of my Party, APC, across the 305 wards in the state who stood firm in the defence of our votes. You have made me proud also.

“I also acknowledge my indebtedness to all the political appointees who campaigned for me and our Party and who also mobilised voters and protected their votes on the day of the election.

“I want to extend my profound gratitude to the religious leaders in the State for their relentless and fervent prayers for peace in the State and particularly for peaceful elections. It is  also to your credit that you   initiated the Charter of Equity, which was designed to reduce tension and acrimony in governorship elections in the State.

“In the same vein, I thank the Elders Council for adopting the Charter of Equity document wholeheartedly and for tirelessly marketing it to our people in the 27 local government areas. There is no doubt whatsoever that all your efforts paid off handsomely; translating to the historic outcome of the election.

“I also wish to thank our traditional rulers for all their prayers for the peaceful conduct of the election. I  am sincerely grateful to you,  our Royal Fathers.

“For INEC, the security agencies and others who saw to it that the election was peaceful, free and fair,  you are the true heroes of the election and worthy defenders of our democracy. I thank you all.

“Once again,  I am grateful to everyone who has made this victory possible.  Please continue to hold our State in your prayers as we look forward to better days ahead.

To God be all the glory.”

NLC Protest

By Akinwale Kasali

Despite the warning by the National Industrial Court to the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, the Trade Union Congress, TUC, and its Affiliate Unions not to embark on any nationwide strike, they insist on the strike action.

Both the NLC and TUC are defiant and have resolved to  begin the planned nationwide strike from midnight today.

The strike is to protest the battering of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero and others in Owerri, Imo State on November 1, as well of the pending labour issues in Imo State and the Federal Government.

They had, on November 7, resolved to declare a Nationwide strike by Tuesday, November 14, if their demands are not met.

It would be recalled that  Ajaero was battered and brutalized by alleged Policemen and thugs in Owerri where they went to organise a strike action against the Government.

According to the NLC President and his TUC counterpart, they were at the NLC state Secretariat in Owerri to protest among other grievances a backlog of unpaid salaries and allowances, Pensions, gratuities and non-compliance with National Minimum Wage Act. The State Governor denies the allegations, especially, non payment of salaries.

Diri won the election in six of the eight local government areas of the state, while his closest challenger, Sylva, cliched only two LGAs.

The LGAs include Kolokuma/Opokuma, Ogbia, Yenegoa, Sagbama, Nembe, Ekeremor, Brass, and Southern

The Ondo State Elders and Religious leaders have  waded into the political crisis rocking the State in the last few months over the continued absence of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and the  impeachment process against his Deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

The State House of Assembly had forwarded a petition  over an alleged gross misconduct against the Deputy Governor. Some groups have also called on the Assembly to impeach the Governor over his continued absence from the State.

The Elders and Leaders meeting, at the instance of  Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, waa held at his Akure residence, and lasted for about four hours.

Those that attended the meeting include the Chief Imam of Akure, Alhaji Abdulmalik Yayi-Akorede, the Archbishop of Ondo Diocese, Anglican Communion, Bishop Simeon Borokini, Chief Femi Aluko, Bashoun Seinde Arogbofa, and Olowa of Igbara-Oke, Oba Adefarakanmi Agbede.

Arogbofa said “The Elders’ meeting was summoned by the Afenifere leader and, by implication, the Yoruba leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, to discuss issues in our State.

“It is still ongoing; we just started the discussion about the problems happening in the State. Having looked at so many things, it was the conclusion of the Elders and Leaders of Ondo State that, for now, there should be no impeachment of either the Governor or the Deputy. We are still looking at how things are going. We still have a lot; we just started.”

He added that the Elders were yet to meet with the House of Assembly members but expressed the hope that the Lawmakers would honour the Elders in the State.

Arogbofa said “It will be strange for us to talk to them and for them to say no. One steps after the other. We would contact all stakeholders and fashion out ways of maintaining peace and tranquillity in the State.”

“Also speaking, the Lisa of Ondo Kingdom, Sir Simeon Oguntimehin said “In addition, the meeting has decided that no attempt should be made to impeach either the governor or his deputy. The meeting wants the rule of law to be adhered to without any problem.

On his part, Professor Olu-Aderounmu said “We want everybody to cooperate with the Elders. We mean well for this state. We particularly want the Ondo State House of Assembly  to cooperate if called upon, by Baba Fasoranti and the Elders in the state.

“Some of the Elders participated in the creation of this state and they feel concerned and appeal to everybody to please cooperate.

“Ondo State used to be a leading state in the federation, whether you talk about education, even human and materials resources. We want to continue to be the first in the country.”

Ogun Government Shuts Down Supreme Agro Limited Over Cholera Outbreak

By Akinwale Kasali

The Ogun State Ministry Of Environment has clamped down on some companies in the State over a cholera outbreak

The State Government has shut down an agro- processing company, Supreme Agro Limited in Igbesa community, Ado Odo Local Council, for alleged serious industrial pollution that has destroyed the ecosystem of the host community.

Ola Oresanya, the Commissioner of Environment said the sanction came after several complaints from the Igbesa community and subsequent verification, and warnings by the State Environmental Task Force and the Commissioner.

Oresanya said despite earlier denial, the company was found guilty of industrial pollution as it discharges its untreated wastewater into the community, which has greatly affected the well-being of residents, leading to the Cholera Outbreak.

The former Boss of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, said rather than install effluent plants that would contain the waste water, remove the hazardous components and restore it back to a safe level before discharge to surrounding water bodies, the company bye-passed the plant and discharged the wastewater directly into the community, which did not only constitute an eyesore but impacted negatively on the environment.

He said the State Government will not look away from such behaviour which will have an adverse health implications on the well-being of the residents of their host community.

The Commissioner said the company will remain shut until it restores the environment back to normal, and be more responsible in their production processes as well as carry their host community along with their level of remediation.

He extolled Igbesa Traditional Council for notifying the Government of the unethical environmental practices of the company.

He urged other Councils, communities, residents and public-spirited individuals to join the state in enthroning proper environmental governance statewide.

Oresanya used the opportunity to warn companies operating in the state that while the government will continue to provide an enabling environment for them to operate as the industrial capital of the country, it will not tolerate any carelessness in their production processes.

“They must be straight and do the right things all the time as the state government will always reward companies that operate in accordance with global environmental best practices,” he added.

JAMB  Alleges Admission Racketeering In UNN

0

By Akinwale Kasali

The Joint Admission Matriculation Board, JAMB, has fingered University of Nigeria Nsukka, in admission racketeering scandal.

This is coming at a time when Senate is set to  probe alleged admission racketeering in Universities in the country following a motion moved by Senator Onyeka Nwebonyi, representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District.

Nwebonyi specifically cited the admission travails of one Chinyere Ekwe at UNN. He  alleged that the University staff conspired with JAMB officials to carry out unwholesome practices.

The allegation prompted  Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to call for a fair hearing. He said JAMB is known to be a reputable institution.

Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB Registrar who commended the Senate for giving the exam body a chance to defend itself over the issue, stressed that the affected candidate sat for the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), and scored 291.

Oloyede said that the girl who applied to study Medicine and Surgery at UNN, was in 241 position in the ranking of applicants for the medical programme in the university after all her other academic performances, including post-UTME score, were calculated by the institution.

“Seeing the reality of the ranking, this lady did not apply to change her course, but the University decided she changes her to Medical Laboratory. A proposal was made to her and she accepted the Medical Laboratory in writing, and the institution then recommended her for admission into Medical Laboratory. We knew that she could not have been taken for Medicine because that year the University admitted more than the approved number.”

While saying that the University admitted above its given departmental quota in Medical Laboratory and was told to reduce the number, Oloyede said it was discovered that many other applicants, who were admitted ‘under the table’ (illegally) scored above her.

“Till today, the lady has no approval letter from JAMB neither for Medicine nor Medical Laboratory. And if she is doing Medical Laboratory, she is doing it in an arrangement between her and the institution,” Oloyede said.

He, however, said the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) of JAMB detected issue with the admission, having ranked in distant 241 position, which made her stand no chance to be admitted.

The JAMB boss further disclosed that the University ought to have followed all procedures of admitting candidates starting from ensuring that it confirmed with the quota allocated to it and ranking order, which was ignored in this case.

“The truth of the matter is that if she has a letter of provisional admission, it is not from JAMB. So, we welcome the wise counsel of the Senate President that the matter be investigated. We will cooperate with the Senate,” Oloyede added.

The Registrar assured the public that the Board and its staff would be vindicated, even as he expressed delight over the mediating role the exam body played between candidates and institutions in ensuring equity.

Foreign: British Leader, Sunak Appoints Former PM Foreign Secretary

David Cameron
David Cameron
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak brought back former leader David Cameron as foreign minister on Monday in a reshuffle triggered by his firing of interior minister Suella Braverman after her criticism of police threatened his authority.
It was the latest reset for a prime minister whose party is badly lagging the Labour Party before an election expected next year. The return of Cameron suggested Sunak wanted to bring in a more centrist, experienced hand rather than appease the right of his party which supported Braverman.
It also reawakens divisive debate over Brexit: Cameron held the referendum on European Union membership in 2016 and was hated by many on the right of the party after he campaigned to remain. He quit hours after Britain voted to leave.
Under fire from opposition lawmakers and members of the governing Conservative Party to eject Braverman, Sunak seemed to have brought forward a long-planned reshuffle to bring in allies and remove ministers he felt were not performing.
His hand was forced when the ever-controversial Braverman defied him last week in an unauthorised article accusing police of “double standards” at protests, suggesting they were tough on right-wing demonstrators, but easy on pro-Palestinian marchers.
The opposition Labour Party said that inflamed tensions between a pro-Palestinian demonstration and a far-right counter protest on Saturday, when nearly 150 people were arrested.
While her removal was not a surprise, it was the appointment of Cameron which caused shock in the Conservative Party, welcomed by more centrist lawmakers but loathed by some on the right who described it as the ultimate “Brexit surrender”.
Cameron said he was glad to take on his new role because at a time of global change, “it has rarely been more important for this country to stand by our allies, strengthen our partnerships and make sure our voice is heard”.
“Though I may have disagreed with some individual decisions, it is clear to me that Rishi Sunak is a strong and capable prime minister, who is showing exemplary leadership at a difficult time,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Cameron has been out of politics since 2016 and will be able to return to government via an appointment to the House of Lords upper house of parliament.
