Alleged Prohibition Of Christian Activities In Two Katsina Based Universities: CAN Distances From Law Suit

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Katsina State  Chapter of the umbrella body of Christian faithful in Nigeria ,the Christian Association Nigeria, CAN, on Thursday, March 21 2024, distanced the Association from a purported law suit challenging alleged discriminatory actions of two Katsina based tertiary institutions against  Christian students

Katsina CAN Secretary, Dr Musa Daniel, while briefing the media, said Ibrahim Isah, the litigant is neither known  to the body, nor has its mandate to institute the said court action.

The Source reports that earlier on Thursday, Barrister  Isah, widely believed to be enjoying the backing of Alliance Defending Freedom International, ADF announced that he has instituted a law suit to challenge two Universities in Katsina for, allegedly, prohibiting Christian groups from conducting fellowship meetings and worships on their campuses .

The ADF  had earlier on Monday March 18 in a statement rationalizing the law suit ,accused  the two Universities of imposing restrictions on Christian religious activities as back as between 2017 and 2020 ,and has since refused to reverse and or relax same .

The Advocacy group further noted that the  affected Universities have continued to enforce the restrictions order ,by allegedly denying Christians access to all worship and fellowship facilities on their campuses.

Conversely, the ADF said Muslim faithful have continued to enjoy unfettered gatherings at all University- owned worship facilities, adding that even though Katsina remains largely a moslem  state there are  considerable Christian students at the concerned universities .

However, the Katsina State CAN scribe, said the body has not engaged the services of Isah and or any other persons to institute any legal action against the authorities of the

universities.

According to him, findings by CAN have shown that Christian Fellowships and other related activities are running unhindered on the various campuses of the tertiary institutions concerned, contrary to the false claims of Isah .

Dr Daniel accused Isah of enjoying the sponsorship of ADF ,in the whole purported legal challenge against the authorities of the affected universities.

“Barr. Ibrahim Isah does not in any way represent the CAN katsina State chapter in any legal matter .We have our legal Adviser in the person of Bar Samaila Audu .

“CAN Katsina State Chapter has records of of peaceful co-existence and merit based leaderships in the two universities .

“On this note we disassociate ourselves from the legal actions .This is for the attention of the Federal University of Dustin-Ma and Umar Musa Yar’ Adua University katsina, the Federal High Court of Justice Katsina and the general public.” CAN stated

“My Life Is Under Threat” – Ondo APC Governorship Primary Aspirant

Paul Akintelure is dead

By Ayodele Oni

One of the Governorship Aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in  Ondo State, Paul Akintelure,  has raised an alarm over alleged threats to his life.

Akintelure, who served as the running mate to the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu during the 2012 election under the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), disclosed that there have been both direct and indirect attempts on his life.

He was among Commissioners that were recently sacked by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa who succeeded late Governor Akeredolu.

As at last count, APC has five contenders for the Alagbaka government house and will slug it out in April primary election.

Akintelure, in a statement  on Thursday by his spokesperson, Oladapo Akintelure, expressed his initial belief that the threats would subside over time.

However, he expressed concern that the situation has worsened as the APC governorship primary election scheduled for April 25 approaches.

Akintelure further revealed that he has reported the threats to the relevant security agencies and has received intelligence reports and recommendations.

Despite these challenges, he reassured his supporters of his unwavering commitment to serving the people of Ondo state.

The statement said: “Our determination remains steadfast, our spirits are high, and our resolve to drive positive change in Ondo State remains unyielding. For me, this endeavour is rooted in principles of peace, unity, and collaboration.

“We are high in spirit and won’t relent in our drive towards a better Ondo State. The threat against me only strengthened my resolve to stand up for what is right and just. I will not allow fear to dictate our path forward.”

Eyitayo Jegede

By Ayodele Oni

Two-time Governorship Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo state, Eyitayo Jegede, has formally announced his non participation in the November 24, 2024 Governorship race.

Jegede had had a shot in the Governorship race in 2016. He contested against former Governor Olusegun Mimiko,  and in 2020, against late Oluwarotimi Akeredolu. He lost on both occasions.

Although the PDP has ruled out zoning of its flagbearer in the 2024 Governorship, but from the arrangement on ground in the State, other political parties are shopping for Candidates in the Southern Senatorial District.

Jegede, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), addressed his supporters in Akure on Thursday at his campaign office, and told them that his decision was an outcome of several intensive and extensive consultations, consolidations, and reconsiderations.

He said: “The event of today has become expedient in the face of the upcoming potential activities in our state and the party.

“As leaders, we owe it a duty to God Almighty and man to not only seek to give back what the Almighty God had endowed us with but also ensure that the party is meticulously supported, guided, and nourished on fertile grounds to provide a basis to grow a system that could yield good fruit for all and sundry.

“A decision has to be taken whether we need to repeat the same process that we passed through in 2016 and 2020.

“After several intensive and extensive consultations, consolidations, and reconsiderations, it became obvious that we need to reexamine whether to proceed or take a detour that could guarantee an alignment with the preponderance of opinion in terms of the quest for equitable representation, equity, and fair play particularly at the level of governorship.”

Jegede maintained that the election of successive Governors on the PDP platform had not been based on zoning but on merit.

“I must also state here, albeit clearly, that the succession since the civilian administration had witnessed the emergence of two Governors (Chief Adebayo Adefarati and Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu) from the Northern Senatorial district. Governors Olusegun Agagu and current Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa, from Southern Senatorial District. The central produced Governor Olusegun Mimiko.

“Their respective tenure had been based on both constitutional provisions and/or Providence.

“Today, we have an array of Governorship aspirants who are competent and distinguished in their various callings, we also have those who have shown exceptional qualities including consistency and unalloyed loyalty to the party.

“I feel it is time to allow these men the opportunity to try their luck in the primary and by God’s grace, ultimately win the Governorship election, all the aspirants would be accorded every support that is available at my disposal.

“The time is now to rebuild the party for victory. I am committed to making all necessary sacrifices to provide solutions to the problems of the Party rather than join in compounding it.

“I recognize that the success of our party is achievable if we all work together, and I, therefore, request you to join hands with the party leadership in your wards and in our various local government areas to ensure a rancor-free primary and a successful outing in the forthcoming governorship elections.”

Nnamdi Kanu’s Family Laments, Says: “Igbo Leaders Have Abandoned Him To His Fate”

0

By Akinwale Kasali

The family  of Nnamdi Kanu, detained  Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has expressed concern over his continued incarceration by the Nigerian Government.

The Family lamented that  Igbo Leaders have left Kanu  to languish in the detention.

In a Statement signed by Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the family further alleged that selfish politicians benefiting from the insecurity in the South East region of the country, are behind the continued incarceration of the embattled IPOB leader.

Reacting to the recent refusal of the Federal High Court in Abuja to grant Kanu bail pending the determination of the charges against him, the family, wondered why it had become so difficult for Igbo political elites and leaders to book an appointment for an audience with President Bola Tinubu to discuss the matter, nearly one year after this administration came to power.

“How is it that nobody among Igbo political leaders have reached President Tinubu to discuss Nnamdi Kanu’s release almost a year he came to power?

“Is it not deliberate? Have they not been gaining access to the President concerning other issues? It is a shame that Kanu is being punished for asking for the freedom of Ndigbo and the leaders have abandoned him to die in DSS custody.

“Kanu is terribly sick and nobody cares! His health is deteriorating everyday. He has not changed his clothes. Why has the Court continued to hold him at DSS custody instead of Correctional Centre?”

The family insisted that some people are benefiting from his continued incarceration hence the apparent apathy on the part of the political elite to engage the President for his release.

“Why can’t they go for his release if they truly love the South East? Something is definitely wrong somewhere. They are benefiting from his continued detention, and that is why they are not making any serious move to engage Mr President. Don’t forget that some people sponsored his abduction and extraordinary rendition.

“Why should he be abandoned for asking the freedom of Biafra? He didn’t take up arms against government but he was tagged a terrorist. Yet the same government is busy releasing terrorists from detention.”

The family has, however, vowed to expose the beneficiaries of their son’s continued incarceration and the insecurity in the South East region.

“Nobody dies with any secret. Very soon all those behind Kanu’s continued detention will be exposed. Those benefiting from the insecurity in the South East are the ones enjoying his continued stay in detention. But nothing lasts for ever. One day they will be out of power.”

The family said it was dismayed that Kanu, who assisted in getting justice for illegally detained inmates, has been left to suffer alone.

“Kanu has single-handedly funded the release of inmates from different tribes who were unjustly detained while he was at Kuje prison last time. Why should he be now abandoned to rot in DSS custody?.”

Kanu’s family said it wondered if the trial Judge, the Honourable Justice Binta Nyako, took time to go through the certified true copy of the Supreme Court judgement that referred the case back for trial, noting that the apex court stressed that the defendant’s initial bail ought not have been revoked.

According to the family, if truly the trial Judge had digested the Supreme Court’s judgement, she would not have refused the bail application.

Kanu’s family maintained that the IPOB leader “is never afraid of standing trial,” but regretted that “the conditions they subjected him to, do not guarantee justice.

“Why can’t they allow him to change his clothes? Why will they keep him in DSS custody for years instead of sending him to Kuje Correctional Centre where he can have access to his doctors?

“Has the Court bothered to know if its orders are obeyed by the DSS? The way Kanu is being humiliated and handled does not show fairness. The Court should not create the impression that its acting a script,” the statement further read.

The Commandant of the security outfit in the state, Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed this on Thursday in Akure while parading the suspects and others arrested in connection with various crimes.

Adeleye explained that “The gang of  seven man came all the way from Sapele, Delta State for the purpose of kidnapping, and robbery of a bank in Irele LGA.

“Six of them are at large, but we were able to apprehend the mastermind, who accommodated the robbers. We were equally able to get to the root of the target that they intended to kidnap to give the officers of Amotekun the feeling that it is mere robbery, whereas it was dual operation.

“The manhunt for the leader who escaped to Delta State is on. We are liaising with relevant government and security authorities to assist us in apprehending this runaway gang.

“The Intel available to us shows that they intend to rob three banks and kidnap the MD of a supermarket. Investigations showed that they liased with a staff of the supermarket who declined to join the group.

“Others are those who specialize in vandalization of critical government assets. They actually went with a trailer to load pipes meant for world bank financed water project and successfully offloaded them and our operatives followed them and apprehended them where they offloaded at a different location.

“This is in furtherance of the determination that our citizens live peacefully in Ondo State. We appeal to the public to continue to support us with timely and actionable information and we pledge to secure lives and properties in conjunction with other security agencies in Ondo State.”

Ramadan: Kebbi Flags-Off Distribution Of Over N12bn Assorted Grains

By Ayodele Oni

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has flagged-off the distribution of over N12bn assorted grains as Ramadan palliatives to the people of the state.

Speaking while launching the exercise in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday, Idris warned distribution committees at all levels against any form of abnormalities.

He insisted that any government official found tampering with the distribution exercise would be severely dealt with to serve as deterrent to others.

A statement by Ahmed Idris, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, described the palliatives as an interim measure to bring succour to the general public, especially in the present economic predicament.

While assuring that his government remained  people’s administration, the governor said the gesture was in complement of his campaign promises.

Giving the breakdown of the distribution, Idris said the state’s Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) would receive 4,000 bags of rice and 3,400 bags of grains.

He added that teachers would receive 9,900 bags of rice and 9,500 bags of grains, while 1,000 bags of rice and 1,000 bags of grains would go to Islamic Scholars among others.

The governor pointed out that the current disbursement was fully sponsored by the state government, assuring that another batch of palliative was being expected from the federal government, adding “we have started receiving consignments from them.”

Idris observed that a sign of good leadership “is for leaders to be alive to their responsibilities. As a teacher and a unionist, my government don’t owe workers salaries, gratuity or death benefits.

“In the spirit of fairness and magnanimity, I have directed the payment of this month workers’ salaries from today, and I have already approved the payment of 2023/2024 leave grant for all categories workers.

“Workers are my constituency and teachers are my back, hence the need to do everything to protect their interests.”

The governor instructed that the palliatives should be distributed to all and sundry, irrespective of party affiliation, “because election is over, what remains now is governance and everybody will be carried along.”

General Olanrewaju Says Okuama Killings Could Snowball Into A Bigger Conflict If Not Properly Managed

0

By Akinwale Kasali

The killing of 16 Soldiers last weekend in Okuama, Delta State, has continued to generate controversy in the country.

But, former Minister of Communications, Major General Tajudeen Olanrewaju, retd, has warned that the situation should be properly managed and addressed, or else, it would snowball to a community warfare that can snowball into a bigger conflict in the region.

He added that non-state actors, who parade themselves as militants, should not be seen around crude oil pipelines in the name of security and protection in Nigeria.

Olanrewaju was a former General Officer Commanding, 3 Armoured Division of the Nigerian Army said: “That event in Okuama gives me an unsettled mind about events surrounding the nation’s high volumes of oil deposits in Western Delta. The consequences of collateral damages resulting from gang warfare between two warring communities of Okuama and Okoloba could lead to further serious consequences of collateral damages to our national assets as a result of this unwarranted conflict.

“I believe strongly that the federal government should reconsider a new security protection template for our oil rich region, not on a piecemeal basis but the entire oil belt in the country.

“I also have a strong feeling that non-state actors should be called their true identity and not dressed up nicely with a patronising name. They are militants, thugs, hoodlums and are not different from bandits. That is what they are. Their transition has always been from thuggery, militancy to terrorism. That was how Boko Haram started.

“The Okuoma community may signal a new build-up of community warfare that can snowball into a bigger conflict in the region. Who knows? It was Odi, Zaki Biam, now Okuama and Okoloba. This is a smoldering smoke that must be quenched as quickly as possible. The earlier the federal government steps in quickly and keeps the smoldering smoke down as fast as possible, the better in the oil region.

“My view as my committee suggested on Gen Abisoye’s NNPC’s Report still stands the test of time. The National Security Adviser, NSA and the Military High Command must come out with a new Creek defence plan and policy to include the crude oil zone, oil platform, the offshore assets and resources to support them by laws, regulations and the Constitution.

“ As a matter of digression, I have made the points that the so-called non-state actors cannot protect our oil pipelines for lack of total patriotism. The nation needs a national institution to protect our national assets. We need to apply capital punishment for offences relating to oil theft in the Niger Delta region and banditry around our mining states.

“The nation derives its revenues from these resources. This definition has to be made clear in our laws and the Constitution. Those soldiers must not die in vain.

“There is nowhere in the world where some sections of the society will be fighting unprotected military officers on peace mission. It is because of armed forces, as an institution, and police that Nigeria is still united. And for a set of people to gang up to cut, burn and kill military officers? It is not done and must not be allowed to be pushed under. Perpetrators must be fished out and punished.”

El Rufai’s Romance With Opposition Parties Triggers Suspicion Of Possible Dumping Of APC

Mallam Nasir El Rufai at SDP secretariat

By Ayodele Oni

A visit by immediate past Governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir El Rufai to the National Secretariat of the Social Democratic Party, (SDP) in Abuja on Wednesday, has elicited mixed social media reactions.

Some of those that reacted to the visit were of the view that it must be connected to the 2027 General elections.

El Rufai, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory,(FCT) was nominated as a Minister by President Bola Tinubu, but did not receive the blessing of the Senate, which hid behind security to abort his clearance.

He, thereafter, announced that he was travelling out of the country to further his studies and has since faded from public glare.

His surprise visit to the National Secretariat of the Social Democratic Party in Abuja, however, is fuelling speculations that he may be preparing for surprises ahead of the next General Elections.

An informed source hinted that the former Governor, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) came on a consultation visit to the National Chairman of the SDP, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam.

According to the source, Gabam described El-Rufai as a friend with high political pedigree, adding that Nigeria needed transformational leaders like him.

The source hinted that El-Rufai was received by the members of the National Working Committee, (NWC) of the party.

El-Rufai has been paying consultation visits to some notable politicians across political parties in recent times.
