Afenifere Exonerates President Tinubu Over Economic Hardship, Blames Buhari

Afenifere, Pan Yoruba Socio-political Group has told Nigerians not to blame the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration for the present economic hardship the nation is undergoing. It stressed that the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari should be held responsible.

The foremost Yoruba Group in a Statement signed by the Group’s Publicity and Organising Secretaries, Jare Ajayi and Kole Omololu, said that the immediate past administration, dug political and economic holes for the administration of his successor.

It added that the Buhari administration “did not make provision for oil subsidies in last year’s budget which made Tinubu cancel the regime of oil subsidies in his inaugural speech.

It added that the “economic downturn was caused by Buhari’s administration which was built on a platform of hope and a defective federalism saying promises made were not fulfilled.

The group said that “Under Buhari’s watch, terrorists and banditry were operating effortlessly. Law and order broke down.

“Many innocent citizens including the daughter of our leader were killed and or kidnapped.

“President Buhari could not rein in his critical officials like the then Governor of CBN, Mr Godwin Emefiele, who was printing money rather than facing the reality of taking the difficult decisions, which were postponed till the evil day.”

The group said a probe panel accused Godwin Emefiele and his team of printing N22.7 trillion through ways and means and the federal government was borrowing to pay salaries and pensions during the years of the Buhari administration.

It added that some ministers suggested the removal of subsidies, among other economic decisions but President Buhari did not agree until his last year in office to lay a booby trap for the incoming administration of President Tinubu.

“ It was, therefore, obvious that we were simply postponing the evil day. The CBN Governor denied leaks flying around that the books were being doctored. He reassured the federation that all was well.

“ He even wanted to contest the presidential election! There were no penalties for his infractions by President Buhari.

“These inactions and false lives continued till May 29, 2023, when the new helmsman, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, was sworn in as President.

“President Tinubu wasted no time amending his inauguration address and declared the subsidy regime over! This was obvious as there was no appropriation for subsidy from June 2023.

“He quickly followed up with the deregulation of the forex regime, which resulted in the free fall of the Naira.

A man who is not shy about making difficult decisions, he probably underestimated the capability and capacity of the beneficiaries of the old order to make things ungovernable for his administration.”

Afenifere noted that “those sleeping and snoring during the eight years of Buhari suddenly woke up forgetting that these remedial actions should have been taken many years back.

“The major sin of President Tinubu was in his contesting and winning the presidential election and making these decisions, which will hurt in the short term but bring us back to reality in the long run.

Afenifere, therefore, suggested a vibrant Ministry of Information to regularly stay in touch with the people, as a way out of the economic downturn.

It also suggested regular town hall meetings across the country where ministers would go back to their constituencies to engage with the people.

The group said “there should be the realignment of the National Assembly budget and launch of operations go back to the people by the legislators and each member must take palliatives back to the constituency.

” Governors receiving almost double allocations due to the removal of subsidies and readjustment of the exchange rates should deliver to their people. The allocations of each state of the federation should be published monthly.

“Implementation of operation grow what we eat and eat what we grow policy. Make banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism a capital offence punishable by death.

“Return to true and fiscal federalism with state police, for which we commend the President and Governors’ endorsement, and state ownership of mineral resources.

“This is not the time for some elder statesmen to make incendiary comments that can put our unity in jeopardy. Rather, it is a time to deepen peaceful co-existence to navigate through our current challenges.

Afenifere noted that” Orchestrating anarchy will be resisted in our dear nation. We fought through our blood to achieve democracy. We will also vigorously defend it, as it is here to stay.”

Ondo Reps Member Faults Allegations Against Gov Aiyedatiwa, Accuses Colleagues Of Being Political

Lucky Aiyedatiwa

By Ayodele Oni

A member of the House of Representatives representing, Ondo East/West, Federal Constituency, Abiola Makinde, has faulted the letter written by some Members of the House of Representatives in Ondo State to President Bola Tinubu where they accused Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of some wrongdoings.

Makinde, who reacted to the letter through a statement, accused his colleagues of being politically motivated with each of the signatories having Governorship ambition or supporting one of the aspirants.

He insisted that the letter, signed by five persons, did not represent the position of the Ondo state caucus at the green chamber.

“With due respect to my colleagues, I think this letter has revealed those who intend to create crisis in the party than averting it. That lawmakers who are leaders in their own constituencies would suddenly wake up to protect the dead Former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who they abandoned when he was alive is self defeating.

“Since the death of the former governor, this caucus has not deemed it fit to pay a condolence visit to his family, but yet they claim to now love him in death more than when he was alive.

“Hon. Adesida, leader of the caucus, is angling to be the running mate of one of the governorship aspirants in the state. Hon. Odimayo is a governorship aspirant.

“Hon. Adelegbe is the Director General of the campaign of another governorship aspirant, Hon. Mayowa Akinfolarin while Hon. Akinfiranye is the Director General of the campaign of another aspirant, Wale Akinterinwa, who is his kinsman.

“Therefore, it is easy to see where the truth lies in all of this. There is nothing honourable in being bonded to fight a common enemy who you think is ahead. I will never join in such.

“All the allegations against the governor were put forward in bad faith. The five lawmakers were in a hurry to nail a man who did nothing to hurt them.

“Irrespective of who gets the accolades, the payment of #35,000 wage award and 2017 salary arrears claimed to be Akeredolu’s initiative didn’t come until Aiyedatiwa became the Governor.

“The expenditure of government is done on month by month basis. Before his death, Akeredolu was out of office for about six months. How can lawmakers, who are supposed to have deep knowledge of how government runs, claim that what is being done now was approved by him over six months ago?

“That lawmakers would even groan at those lofty achievements instead of applauding them speaks volume of the hatred in their hearts.

“Suppose it’s Akeredolu’s initiative as they claimed, why is the Governor blamed for destroying the legacies of Aketi even when he has vowed openly to complete all projects initiated by his former boss?”

“My Son’s Murder Too Hard For Me”- Edo APC Governorship Aspirant, Withdraws From Race

Ehiozuwa Agbonayinwa

By Adesina Soyooye

Ehiozuwa Agbonayinwa, an Edo State Governorship Aspirant under the All Progressives Congress, APC,  has been forced to withdraw from the race.

He was one of the 12 Aspirants scheduled to slug it out in the Party Primaries scheduled for Saturday. But Agbonayinma, a former member of the House of Representatives withdrew on Thursday from the race, a heart broken man.

He was confronted by every parent’s  worst nightmare. His 23 year-old son, Isazuwa Agbonayinma was fatally shot by a gunman in Houston, Texas, United States of America where he resided.

Agbonayinma broke the sad news of the tragedy which befell him, and his decision to withdraw from the race in the aftermath of the incident, when he addressed his supporters at the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area on Thursday.

He told them: “Over a year ago, I decided to give serious consideration to the calls from well-meaning Edolites at home, and in the Diaspora, on the dire need to change the political narrative in Edo State, while expressing confidence in my ability to champion the cause of moving Edo State forward.

“So, I began consultations with my family, friends, close allies, leaders of our great party, traditional rulers, religious leaders, opinion leaders, and media influencers across Edo State and the nation on my interest to contest in the 2024 Edo governorship race.

“To the glory of God, the positive reception has been overwhelming. I am eternally grateful for the individual and collective efforts for this success.

“At the height of this success, my family suffered a very tragic development. My 23-year-old and very promising son, Osazuwa Michael Agbonayinma (Zuwa), was fatally shot and killed in Houston, Texas, USA. I have just returned from the United States after my son was buried. This is a very bitter experience that cannot be wished even upon an enemy.

“Presently, my family and I are highly devastated. And I am not in the right frame of mind to continue any serious political campaign at this time. After due consultations and consideration, I am suspending my gubernatorial campaign at this time. We need some quiet time to grieve and heal.”

Under the APC, 11 aspirants will participate in the Primary of Saturday. They include: Clem Agba, a former Minister of State under former President Muhammadu Buhari, Monday Okpebholo, Lucky Imasuen, Anamero Dekeri, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Gideon Ikhine Col David Imuse (retd), Gen Charles Airhiavbere, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, a former one-time Governor of the State, Blessing Agbomhere, Dennis Idahosa and Ernest Umakhihe.

NLC Declares Nationwide Protest Over Hardship, Says  Not Interested In Empty Talks

NLC Strike

By Akinwale Kasali

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has decided to go on a two-day Nationwide Strike if the Federal Government fails to implement the agreements signed with it in October 2023.

The NLC said that it is tired of the empty talks of the Federal Government, directing its members and affiliate unions to begin mobilisation for a two-day national protest expected to take place on February 27 and 28, 2024.

The two-day national protest will take place at the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum it had earlier issued.

President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, who addressed newsmen at the end of the Union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, asked his members to be on standby for an indefinite strike, which would commence seven days after the nationwide protest if the government still fails to meet its demands.

Ajaero, who noted that Labour was no longer interested in empty talks from the Government but in actions, urged the Government to immediately implement the agreement and restore faith in the democratic process as Nigerians were struggling to survive.

It would be recalled that the meeting between the Federal Government and the National Leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, ended in deadlock.

Recall that the NLC and TUC on February 8 issued a 14-day nationwide strike notice to the Federal Government over the failure to implement the agreements reached on October 2, 2023, following the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit known as petrol.

The unions said despite their efforts to ensure industrial peace, the government seemed unperturbed by the mass suffering and hardship across the country.

Speaking in an interview with The Punch on Tuesday, the NLC Vice President, Hakeem Ambali, said the meeting between the organised labour and the Minister of State Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha ended in a deadlock.

According to Ambali, the Minister could not convince the Unions to suspend the strike slated for February 23, 2024, adding that the meeting was called to review the level of implementation of the October agreement.

He asserted that the strike would go on unless the Federal Government addressed the untold hardship meted out to Nigerians by the removal of the fuel subsidy.

He said, “The meeting realised that major parts of the agreement had not been implemented, and the Labour minister expressed her disappointment that the government had not kept faith with the spirit of the agreements.

“The meeting resolved subsequently that the agreements have not been well implemented and that they (government) still have windows of opportunities to meet to address all these to avert the impending strikes.”

Ambali lamented that the Federal Government had yet to fulfil its part of the agreement with the labour movement, adding that the agreement was time-bound.

He said: “The two-week ultimatum stands except the government does the needful and addresses the untold hardship meted on Nigerians by the famous pronunciation that ‘subsidy is gone’ on 29 May.

“We can see pockets of protests across the country. These are very dangerous. So, Labour must rise and offer leadership; Our ultimatum is patriotic.

“We signed an agreement in October last year that the buses would be ready to ply Nigeria’s road in December last year. We are already in February. I do not think we have seen any bus on the road.

“On the wage award, which is N35,000, we also realised that the government has not kept faith with that. They were only able to pay one until we issued an ultimatum for 14 days. We realised that even state governments did not negotiate with their labour unions.

“What they only did was that they started paying N10,000 before the agreement was signed. Some of the governors were part of the meeting back then in October. They would have called the labour unions and negotiated new wages, which were not done.”

On the minimum wage negotiation, Ambali noted the NLC declined to meet with the committee as the government was supposed to address the issue.

He said: “For emphasis is the issue of the minimum wage committee. By law, in September 2023, the minimum wage committee should have come into operation six months after the expiration of the old Minimum Wage Act, which was not done.

“The committee was inaugurated about two weeks ago and with the negotiation statute-barred because it is expected to have matured by March 31, 2024, when the existing law becomes obsolete.

“Even now, they said the committee was to brief us yesterday (Monday), we said we are not looking for a technical session. That it is a joint committee between Labour and government who is supposed to have briefed us, and the committee never met.”

Breaking:  FG Seals Sahad Stores Ltd, Abuja, Over Price Fixing

Sahad Stores Sealed

By Gideon Njoku

To try and stem the skyrocket in prices of food items and other essential commodities, the Federal Government has began the sealing of stores and shops and warehouses which it suspects engage in fixing of  prices and hoarding

Nigerians have been grappling with the very high cost of living, especially, in the past couple of months, which has resulted in hunger and anger.

The masses, in a number of States, have taken to the streets to protest the unpleasant high cost of living. Not a few families are going to bed hungry, sparking fears there could be a revolution over the hunger in the land.

The Federal Government, in reaction, has been making frantic efforts to stem the situation by releasing grains  and other palliatives. It, also, suspects sabotage and has warned it would deal decisively with those allegedly hoarding food items and other essential commodities as well as fixing prices.

On Friday, February 16, 2024, the Federal Competition and Condumer Protection Commission set to work in Abuja.

It sealed the Head Office of Sahad Stores Ltd located at Garki Abuja over, alleged, price fixing.

More Stores have, allegedly, been lined -up for same treatment.

Shehu Sani To Northern Monarchs: What Happened To Your Voice In Eight Years Of Buhari’s Misrule?

0

By Ayodele Oni

There is discordant tunes coming from the northern part of the country over the current economic hardship and escalating costs of products.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar-led Northern Traditional Council,  has warned that rising poverty, hunger, and insecurity in the country will force people to revolt against President Bola Tinubu’s government very soon.

The traditional council stated that “It is getting to a level that traditional leaders could no longer pacify the people from revolting against government and political leaders that are supposed to find solutions to their lingering socio-economic plight.

“We have reached that level, people are very agitated, people are hungry, they are angry, but they still believe there are people who can talk to them.

“They believe in some of their Governors, some other traditional rulers, and some of their religious leaders, fortunately, some of us double as traditional and religious leaders.”

Reacting to the outcry by the monarchs, former Senator representing the Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the 8th National Assembly, Shehu Sani made mockery of the Northern people protesting and calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to put an end to the hardship in the country.

The human rights activist, Sani in a post on his official X page on Friday said “For eight years, Northern Traditional Rulers lost their voice under Buhari; they have found it now.”

Sani wondered what happened to the Northern voice, which remained silent all through the eight years of bastardization of Nigeria’s economy and misrule by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He maintained that the north was asleep when Muhammadu Buhari held the country by the jugular, ruin the country’s economy and laid the foundation for the current hardship.

Crisis Looms As FG Is Set To Pay Four-Month Withheld Salaries Of Varsities, Exempts Three Varsity Unions

By Akinwale Kasali

The Federal Government has resolved to pay the four months withheld salaries of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, in some Universities. It, however, exempted other three University based Unions.

This has generated controversy leading to brewing crisis between ASUU and other University- based Unions.

The Joint Action Committee, JAC, of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), has written to the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajiabiamila on the implications of the decision of the Government to single out ASUU for the payment to the exclusion of the other three unions, stressing that this will lead to crisis.

In a leaked memo to the Chief of Staff dated February 13, 2024, SSANU and NASU warned that if the government goes ahead with the exclusion policy, the two unions should not be held liable for any disruption in the academic calendar “for the injustice done to our members by the Government as the peaceful atmosphere in our Universities and Inter-University Centres cannot be guaranteed if the Federal Government fails to do the needful by paying our members their 4 months outstanding salaries like Academic staff in the University Sector.”

The memo titled, “Protest letter over the exclusion of non-teaching staff from the payment of outstanding four months salaries was signed by Prince Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary, NASU and Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, President, SSANU.

The protest letter read: “We write to draw the attention of the Chief of Staff to the President to the privileged information at our disposal that directive has been given to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation to direct the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS) Office to release four (4) months salaries out of the outstanding salaries owed the members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) excluding other staff who belong to other Unions in the Universities and Inter-University Centres.

“These other Unions are: Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

“Your Right Honourable will recall that in year 2022, all the Unions in the Universities and Inter-University Centres embarked on strike action at different time to draw the attention of Government to issues relating to the corporate governance of our Universities and welfare of our members.

“The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU embarked on strike that lasted five (5) months from 27th March to 24th August, 2022 as a result of the lackadaisical and unwilling attitude of the then Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, to implement agreements collectively reached with the Joint Unions of NASU and SSANU.

“It is unfortunate that the then Government decided to bring hardship on our members in the University Sector by implementing ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy for four (4) months of May, June, July and August, 2022.

“The strike was foisted on the two Unions due to different unimplemented memoranda with the Government and it was suspended as a result of another Collective Agreement signed on 20th August, 2022, which has not also seen the light of the day. It also contained “no victimisation clause”.

“ It is quite unfortunate that in spite of the high hope and aspiration of our members as a result of a press release by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity on 20th October, 2023, after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting that the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has granted waiver to the ‘No Work, No Pay’ to ASUU and other Educational Sector Unions.

“ This assurance of payment of the four months outstanding salaries was further guaranteed at the meeting held with the Honourable Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman SAN, OON; the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu and the then Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. Andrew Adejoh, OON on Saturday, 4th November, 2023 in Abuja where the Honourable Minister of Education promised equal and fair treatment of all Unions in the University Sector and assured also that the Presidential pardon covers NASU and SSANU Members as no Union will be short changed.

“This was also emphasized by the Honourable Minister of Education at the high-level stakeholders’ engagement the Honourable Minister of Education had with Vice- Chancellors of Federal Universities and Directors/Chief Executives of Inter-University Centres including Unions in the Universities Sector at the National Universities Commission (NUC) Secretariat, Abuja on Thursday, 11th January, 2024.

“It is in this respect therefore that we write to immediately call the attention of your exalted office to this impending unfair treatment of Non-Teaching staff in the Universities and Inter-University Centre against their Academic counterpart and to say unequivocally that being an Academic or Non-Teaching staff in a University or Inter-University Centres is a matter of choice of vocation and as such this indiscriminate and undue favouritism tilted toward the Academic staff against the Non-Teaching staff should be halted by this Government in the interest of justice, fairness and equity.

“We therefore call the attention of this Government to the fact that the leadership of NASU and SSANU should not be held liable for any disruption in the academic calendar for the injustice done to our members by the Government as the peaceful atmosphere in our Universities and Inter-University Centres cannot be guaranteed if the Federal Government fails to do the needful by paying our members their 4 months outstanding salaries like Academic staff in the University Sector.”

Atiku’s Aide Slams President Tinubu Over Economic Hardship, Faults His Policies

0
Phrank Shaibu and Bola Tinubu

By Akinwale Kasali

Phrank Shaibu, Special Assistant on Public Communications to former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has faulted what he called the shambolic policies of President Bola  Tinubu. According to him, it has plunged the nation’s economy into this deplorable state.

Shaibu said if hunger doesn’t reduce Nigeria’s population, President Bola Tinubu’s “shambolic policies” will.

He said that the fallout of the shambolic policies of President Bola Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress, APC, administration, and Federal Government are killing Nigerians even as there are no efforts to stem the tide.

Shaibu said, “The unprecedented hunger, poverty, and hardship in Nigeria are part of Tinubu’s ultimate plan to decimate Nigerians and pauperise them until they have no shred of dignity left.

“Tinubu is like a quack doctor trying to treat a cancerous patient. But the quack doctor is likely to kill the patient even faster than the cancer itself. This is the dire situation that Nigerians have found themselves in.

“Rather than get to work, he continues to blame his predecessor, President Muhammadu Buhari, for handing him an empty treasury and a weak economy and the opposition for instigating mass protests. He talks as if Buhari was not a member of their diseased All Progressives Congress. He also forgets that his own kabukabu policies and its fallouts are what is instigating the mass protests across the country.”

The Atiku aide further noted that on Tinubu’s watch, poverty has reached an all-time high, with food inflation at 33%. He noted that the resulting effect would be a drop in unemployment, a rise in suicide levels, an increase in crime as well as a spike in the number of out-of-school children.

According to him, operators in the private sector of the economy continue to complain about how the Tinubu administration has led them into uncertain times, resulting in about 10 million small and micro businesses being closed.

He further stated that the free fall in the exchange rate and haphazard nature of government policies under Tinubu’s administration have made a rubbish of projections made by businesses during the last quarter of 2023.

He noted that in the past, garri and beans were considered food for the poor but even today, the poor cannot afford to buy beans which now costs N1,500 per mudu and with no prospects of a stop in the rising prices. SMA baby formula now costs N8,000 from N2,200.

He said, “Just over a year ago, a 50kg bag of rice was N47,000, but today it is N77,000. Beans used to be N36,000, but now it is N42,000. Bread was N700 for a loaf, but now it sells for N1,200. A single egg now costs N150. Imagine how much a crate costs? Even the agbado corn that Tinubu used in campaigning is also expected to go up by over 25%, according to AFEX.

“The tragedy now is that a vast majority of Nigerians whose means can’t afford decent meals, unfortunately contend with staples meant for animals.

“A recent BBC investigative report says that many people consume rejected rice gains by millers. The report specifically says that those rejected grains are purchased by fish farmers to feed their fisheries.

“In a similar context, a random visit to the Garki Market in Abuja will behold a large number of people queuing for maize shafts which they now turn into solid food. Normally, these shafts are sold to livestock farmers, but now Nigerians resort to these forms of staple as human food.”

To underscore how dire the situation has become, he quoted the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Lagos, as saying in December that the hospital recorded a 100% increase in the number of psychiatric patients admitted in the hospital.

Shaibu added that, “Just last month, a female banker committed suicide inside the banking hall, claiming that the economic hardship is unbearable. Indeed, as it is stated in Proverbs 29, verse 2: When the righteous rule, the people rejoice. But when the wicked rule, the people suffer. That is Nigeria’s current quagmire where life is brutish, short and nasty and kidnappers have taken over the land.

“When the Nigeria Economic Summit Group asked him last year to explain how he would pull out over 128 million Nigerians out of the poverty that his political party, the APC, had plunged them into, Tinubu responded by saying that he would not reveal his strategy because he didn’t want the other candidates to steal his plan. But his secret plan has now been revealed, which is to pauperise and decimate Nigerians.

“This was a man who advised the government in 2021 to recruit 50 million youths into the Nigerian Army in order to tackle unemployment. His balabu economic prescriptions have gradually brought Nigeria to its knees, putting the Naira as the worst performing currency in Africa, according to Bloomberg. This is just less than one year in office.

“After removing petrol subsidy abruptly and forcing the CBN to float the currency, he promised to provide succour to Nigerians and then went ahead to approve N3bn to review the social register. Monies meant for poor Nigerians were stolen by his appointees.

Shaibu also said, “At a time Nigeria was facing its worst fiscal crisis, this man decided to waste the country’s resources by appointing the largest cabinet in the history of Nigeria with 48 ministers even though 36 ministers would have met the constitutional threshold. Many of these ministers have been seat warmers and have achieved nothing in the last six months.

“Some ministries were split into three, and three ministers were appointed to head each new unit. Even though Nigeria’s revenue shrunk, he decided to buy a yacht, renovate the Presidential Villa and that of the Vice President, sent a delegation of hundreds of people to Dubai for the COP28, and then approved over N120bn for SUVs for National Assembly members in order to win their loyalty over.

“He was doing all these while asking Nigerians to endure and sacrifice. At least even his own personal praise singer, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1), is now among those lamenting that the suffering is too much. He should be patient, Tinubu still has three years and three months to increase the poverty level.”

Atiku’s aide said Tinubu clearly knew little about Nigeria’s economy as he had been limited only to Lagos, which had always had a formal economy.

He said the President knew nothing about security or building a national economy, hence his over-reliance on IMF and other multilateral organisations.

Shaibu said, “Tinubu rode to power on the lie that he transformed Lagos economy. The truth is that Lagos had been the country’s commercial capital even before he was born. All banks, telecommunications firms, and oil companies are headquartered in Lagos. About 70% of Lagos’ revenue comes from income tax paid by staff of these companies.

“All Tinubu did was to enforce tax payment which the military government had neglected. This was the financial miracle he claimed to have performed. Now, he has been brought to the national level to repeat the so-called miracle, but the failed magician cannot rework his artistry.”

As The Dead Determines Who Governs Ondo

0
Lucky Aiyedatiwa

By Ayodele Oni

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed a date in November for the governorship election in Ondo state to elect a successor to the present administration being led by Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Aiyedatiwa, a former Deputy Governor of the State, was sworn in on 27 December, 2023, following the death of former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, whose burial programme commenced this week.

What could be described as distrust happened between the former Governor and the incumbent which almost led to the impeachment of Aiyedatiwa by the state House of Assembly.

An intervention by some elder statesmen in the state that called on President Bola Tinubu to wade into the political crisis, which had already crippled the state administration, saved the day and paved the way for the swearing in of Aiyedatiwa as governor immediately it was confirmed that Akeredolu was dead.

At the twilight of the late former governor, he loved Aiyedatiwa as his deputy up to a point that during one of the public functions, he vowed to do everything to ensure that he succeeded him.

Aiyedatiwa was very loyal to late Governor Akeredolu to the extent that he saw any attack on the late Governor as a hit on him. His loyalty was never in doubt until the former Governor became sick and fifth columnists found the chance to put a gap between both of the.

At a media event in Akure on Wednesday, Governor Aiyedatiwa told journalists that he was the actual heir apparent to the throne that was endorsed by the late Governor to succeed him.

As reported, Aiyedatiwa said those present at their inauguration and members of the dissolved executive members can testify to the fact that Akeredolu always said he would start where the former governor stopped.

Aiyedatiwa maintained that  it was the wish of Akeredolu that he should succeed him after his tenure ends in February 2025 contrary to insinuations in many quarters.

Akeredolu had picked Aiyedatiwa as his running mate ahead of the October 2020 governorship election after he had fallen out with Hon Agboola Ajayi, who ran with him in a joint ticket in 2016.

In his inauguration speech as second-term Governor and Aiyedatiwa as Deputy on February 24, 2021, the late Governor said on February 24, 2021 “You have been loyal, you have been consistent. You are worthy of this position.

“You are worthy to complete this journey with us. I have maximum followers, maybe you can proceed from there. It is for me to come down and for you to grow. I must come down for him to grow. I have done my little bit.” This was a statement made by late Akeredolu in 2021.

Earlier, a former appointee that served as Commissioner for Finance and  now a   Governorship aspirant under the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Wale Akinterinwa is equally claiming that he is the only candidate anointed by the late Governor to succeed him.

Akinterinwa, maintained that the late Governor Akeredolu had discussions with him to become the next Governor of the state.

Quoting the former Commissioner “Late Governor Akeredolu had a discussion with me in his office and he told me he would want me to take over from him. I didn’t take particular notice of the date he had discussion with me, but it happened immediately after he came back from his trip to Germany. He prayed for me and I am aware he told certain people about his desire.”

Now, two aspirants are laying claim and hanging on to the endorsement of the late former Governor to convince the people of the state to vote for them to emerge as candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the November election. The time will tell who between them that actually got the nod and how far this can be a force to win the election.

Some aides of the former Governor are however doubting whether Aiyedatiwa’s endorsement by Akeredolu still subsists until his last breath going by series of allegations of disloyalty against him which culminated in the move by the Assembly to impeach him.
