Ondo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, has called on Olusola Oke, SAN, Jimoh Ibrahim, and others who contested  with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in the just concluded primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to congratulate the winner.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria stressed that “although Governor Aiyedatiwa enjoyed and still enjoys an overwhelming support of the masses, party faithful and major stakeholders within and outside Ondo state, as evident in his landslide victory, we cannot take away the place of law, which puts to rest any issue that may arise with regards to the conduct of last Saturday’s election”

The Learned Silk urged all other contestants, particularly the duo of Olusola Oke, SAN and Jimoh Ibrahim, both of whom he described as “distinguished lawyers with in-depth knowledge of the law, to openly congratulate the governor and work with him to actualize Ondo State of our dreams”

Ajulo noted that the election was conducted in a very orderly manner, devoid of violence and irregularities.

He commended the Governor Usman Ododo-led primary election committee, INEC, observer’s groups and all relevant stakeholders for a hitch-free exercise

The commissioner is confident that the governor will also record a massive win in the November 2024 governorship election.

“Once again, I congratulate Mr Governor on this landmark victory, I also rejoice with the people of Ondo state for being lucky to have him as a Governor at this point in time.

“I want to applaud the APC party faithful for displaying utmost decorum on Saturday. Rest assured, the Governor is not resting on his laurels and he will do everything within his power to take the state to a greater height.”

The Rivers State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Zacchaeus Adangor, has resigned from the State Executive Council.

He was among those redeployed in a cabinet reshuffle announced on Tuesday by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

He was redeployed to the Special Duties Ministry under the Governor’s office.

Zacchaeus tendered his resignation after rejecting his redeployment to the Ministry of Special Duties.

He had on December 14, 2023, resigned his position as the Attorney-General of the state following the face-off between Governor  Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory(FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Zacchaeus and other Commissioners who resigned due to the political crisis in the state, however, returned to the Government after being reconfirmed by the State House of Assembly.

Fubara, earlier in the week, reshuffled his cabinet and redeployed Zacchaeus as the Commissioner for Special Duties (Governor’s Office).

In a letter addressed to the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Zacchaeus rejected his new office.

Zacchaeus in his resignation letter, accused Fubara of interfering with the performance of his duties as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.

He maintained that he was not ready to work in any capacity in the administration of Governor Fubara.

A 7-man Primary Election Committee, headed by Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo will on Thursday superintend over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo state Governorship Primary Election.

Seven aspirants that have been cleared by the Senator Sam Egwu Screening Committee are expected to slug it out for the party’s ticket.

The International Culture and Events Centre, The Dome, Akure is the venue for the exercise.

A total of 627 Delegates from the 18 Local Government Areas of the State are expected to elect the standard bearer of the party for the November 16, 2024 Governorship election.

The aspirants are Bamidele Akingoye, a former deputy governor, Agboola Ajayi, Sola Ebiseni; John Ola Mafo; Adeolu Akinwumi; Bosun Arebuwa and Kolade Akinjo.

Reacting earlier to delay in announcing results and crisis which trailed the primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, PDP spokesman, Kenedy Peretei stated that “the APC cannot conduct a free, fair, transparent and credible primary election for 171,922 of their members, they should perish the idea of presiding over the affairs of Ondo State beyond the eight years in which they have practically stagnated the State.

“It is a shame that, the APC cannot bring only one of their sixteen aspirants to square up with other political parties in the general election through a process that is above board.

“That alone, is an affirmation that, the party should be consigned to dustbin of history, where it rightfully belongs.

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ondo State Chapter will once again demonstrate its superior organizational sagacity and democratic credentials this week, through a Governorship Primary Election that will be covered live by media houses and Non-Governmental Organizations in the full glare of the world.”

Obi Knocks Coastal Super Highway Project, says Not  A Priority Now

0
Peter Obi

The 2023 Presidential flag bearer of the Labour Party, Peter Obi has taken a dig at the Coastal road project of this administration saying the timing is wrong and is not a priority.

Obi therefore wants an immediate review of the project and attention channelled at the deplorable internal road projects littered all over the country that would enhance economic growth.

The LP standards bearer who listed some of the abandoned road projects in the geopolitical zones of the country said that deliberate attention should be given to those projects that will enhance the living standards of the poor and help internal day-to-day production.

Writing in his X handle on Monday, the former Anambra State Governor said “I have closely followed the comments and developments arising from the coastal superhighway project. While I’m hesitant to engage in contentious debates about its benefits, which I acknowledge, and the pricing, which I have serious concerns about and believe should be thoroughly reviewed, I feel compelled to raise essential questions about the timing and prioritization of such ventures.

“At the forefront of my concerns is the pressing issue of numerous uncompleted roads scattered across the country, many of which have become hazardous death traps and security risks. It’s disheartening to witness the plight of innocent Nigerians who traverse these dilapidated roads under perilous conditions, vulnerable to kidnappers and other dangers.

“Most of these roads, vital for economic growth, regional connectivity, and overall development, have been under construction for several years now and are unlikely to be completed shortly due to poor funding.

“Some of these roads in various zones include:

  1. NORTH-WEST Abuja – Kaduna – Zaria – Kano Road – Sokoto – Funtua – Zaria Road Kano – Hadejia Road Kano – Katsina Road Zaria – Funtua – Shema – Tsafe – Gusau – Talata – Mafara – Sokoto Road Kano – Kwanar – Danja – Hadejia Road
  1. NORTH-EAST Kano – Damaturu – Maiduguri Road – Mubi – Maiduguri Road Nguru – Gashua – Bayamari Road Gombe – Biu – Numan Road Dikwa – Marte – Monguno Road Potiskum – Fika – Bajoga – Gombe – Biu Road Mayo Belwa – Jada – Ganye – Tongue Road Tumu – Pindiga – Kashere – Yalo – Bashar – Wase – Wamba – Nassarawa Road
  1. NORTH-CENTRAL Abuja – Lokoja – Okene- Auchi – Benin Road – Ilorin – Jebba Road Kabba – Omuaran Road – Suleja – Minna Road Makurdi – Gboko – Yandev – Katsina-Ala Road Buruku Bridge across Katsina River
  1. SOUTH-WEST Lagos – Badagry Road Ibadan – Ife – Ilesha – Osogbo Road Itoikin – Ijebu Ode – Ibadan Road Ibadan – Ilorin – Jebba – Mokwa – Bokani Junction Road Abeokuta – Ibadan Road Ikorodu – Shagamu Road Ado – Igede – Aramoko – Itawure Road Ajasse Ipo – Offa – Erinle – Osun State Border Road
  1. SOUTH-EAST 9th Mile – Otukpo – Makurdi Road – Enugu Port Harcourt Road Onitsha – Awka – Enugu Road Onitsha – Owerri – Umuahia Road Bende – Arochukwu – Ohafia Road Okigwe – Afikpo Road – Nsukka – Obollo Afor Ehamafu – Nkalagu Road Oba – Nnewi – Okija Road
  1. SOUTH-SOUTH Benin – Sapele – Warri Road East – West Road (Warri – Kaiama – Ahoada – Port Harcourt – Eket – Oron) Yenegwe Road Junction – Kolo – Otuoke Road Sapele – Agbor – Ewu Road Benin – Akure – Ore – Ife Road Ikot Ekpene – Aba – Owerri Road – Jattau – Fugar – Agenebode Road Bodo – Bonny Road with Bridge across Opobo Channel Port Harcourt – Onne Road – Agbor – Sakpoba – Ogharefe Road Odukpani Junction – Itu – Ikot Ekpene – Umuahia Road.

“The Federal Ministry of Works 2024 capital budget of N892,461,262,656.00, additional funding from multilateral loan projects of N94,828,535,243.00, alongside other expected contributions from sources like the China-Exim Bank and the World Bank, will not be enough for serious work on all the critical roads, some of which I enumerated above, let alone their completion. So why embark on another huge project that will not be completed in the next 20 or 30 years? To do so will only exacerbate the problem of abandoned, uncompleted projects that are not contributing to economic growth and overall development.

“Prioritization and fiscal discipline should be our critical guiding principles now. Therefore, while acknowledging the potential benefits of coastal superhighway infrastructure, I urge prioritization of our existing uncompleted projects.

“We must allocate resources towards repairing and completing existing infrastructure, crucial for the well-being and safety of our society, before embarking on new projects, no matter their perceived benefits. Let’s prioritize the urgent needs of our people and ensure that our investments serve the collective good of the nation.

“In any development formula, the primary focus should be on repairing existing infrastructure rather than embarking on colossal projects that may never reach completion within the next 30 years.

CSOs Stage Rally In Lagos, Reject Pipeline Contracts For Tompolo, Ex-Militants On Itshekiri, Ilaje Lands

Protest on Pipeline Contracts Awarded to Tompolo

By Akinwale Kasali

Leaders of various Civil Society Organizations, CSOs, have held a Rally at the Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota, Lagos, calling for a stop to the pattern of giving Pipeline Contracts to people associated with violence in the country.

The Groups expressed full support for the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and asked Nigerians to be patient to reap the fruits when they mature. But they condemned the Federal Government on its idea of awarding contracts to ex-militants.

The Groups under the aegis of the Civil Society Coalition for Mandate Protection, (CSC-MAP) at the rally cautioned that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, may be unconsciously empowering armed groups through pipeline contracts in the Niger Delta.

It said that the pipeline protection should be given to professionals and that pipelines in Itsekiri and Yoruba territories should not be given to former bandits who once led armed insurrection against the state.

Over 1000 representatives of indigenous peoples from oil producing communities in Lagos, Ondo and Delta States attended the rally.

The groups said it may be compelled to hold rallies in Abuja to draw the attention of the Presidency, the National Assembly and the International Community.

Some of the banners with different inscriptions read, ‘Stop Pipeline Contracts to Bandits’, ‘No more pipeline contracts for former militants,’ ‘Don’t Give Pipelines Protection in Itsekiriland to Our Enemy’, ‘Probe illegal Arms in Niger-Delta’, Okuoma Killings: Who gave The Guns.’

CSC-MAP said it has received complaints from many oil producing communities who feel sidelined by the Federal Government and corporation institutions like oil producing companies and the NNPCL in benefit sharing and job opportunities for the young in the companies involved in oil pipeline protection.

The coalition said the indigenous people vehemently oppose the idea of giving the protection of pipelines protection in Itsekiri and Ilaje lands to Government Ekpemuopolo popularly known as Tomopolo, who they said had led armed battles against the Itsekiri and Ilaje in the past.

“We want President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to succeed. We do not want anything that can lead to another round of crisis in the oil producing communities in the Niger-Delta.The NNPC must never give protection of pipelines in Itsekiri and Ilaje territories to Tompolo who was the ring leader in the ethnic conflict between Itsekiri and Ijaw and between Ijaw and Ilaje. Any attempt to do this is an invitation to chaos”, the Groups said.

The coalition said oil producing communities are concerned that while oil pipleline contracts are a means of providing jobs for local communities, the majority of people in oil producing companies are sidelined by the fact that some of the companies involved in the pipelines protection are not indigenous to the communities and territories that are expected to protect.

“The ndigenous communities like Itsekiri and Ilaje are being sidelined. There is a looming dispute which can snowball into a major problem. It is inconceivable that oil pipeline protection in Itsekiri and Ilaje have been handed over to interests that fought these communities with arms and ammunition in the past”.

It also said that the danger of given Pipeline Contracts to ex-militants is that leaders of armed groups in the name of pipeline protection are being fortified and funded to have dominion on Itsekiri and Ilaje territories which is totally unacceptable.

“Itshekiri and Ilaje Communities in Ondo, Delta and Lagos State call on the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to review the oil pipeline contracts to ensure that local and indigenous people that host oil and oil pipelines are direct beneficiaries”, the CSC-MAP said.

Leaders who spoke at the rally were the CSC-MAP Deputy Coordinator, Micheal Ajayi, Assiastant Secretary, Ajayi Lateef and other officials of the Group that included; Abubakar Salami and Uzor Jideofor.

The Group said millions of youths remain unemployed in Iteskiri  communities eventhough they are from oil producing communities.

It added that the indigenous communities in Ondo, Itsekiri Delta, Ogun and Lagos States call on President Tinubu to review the whole indigenous companies operating in these states to ensure that the real beneficiaries are people indigenous to these communities.

It stressed that the Federal Government should ensure pipeline protection does not lead to proliferation of arms in the oil producing communities, adding that the communities are worried following the killings of 17 soldiers in the Niger Delta which shows clearly that certain elements in the Niger Delta are in possession of dangerous weapons.

“That the Federal Government should launch a new amnesty to ensure armed groups remaining in the Niger Delta hand over their arms to the Federal Government. That the Federal Government should set up a committee made up of security agencies and community leaders to investigate the source of arms used in the killing of the soldiers and to punish those responsible for the proliferation of arms”.

CSC-MAP further stressed that the communities are worried and feel unsafe following the killings of 17 soldiers, which

clearly that illicit arms remain in large numbers in the Niger Delta.

“We call for immediate and thorough investigations to find out if there is a link between arms proliferation in the Niger Delta, oil pipeline contracts and the recent killing of the soldiers. That failure to address these burning issues may lead to outbreak of hostilities the Niger-Delta.

“The community based organisation in the oil producing communities are concerned about old and fresh environmental problems arising from busting of illegal refineries, social and cultural issues associated with oil production pipeline protection in  Nigeria.

“CSC-MAP is also concerned with issues of pollution, security and other indigenous issues relating to oil production in Nigeria. The Civil Society Coalition for Mandate Protection, (CSC-MAP) is a coalition of 55 civil society, community-based organisations and faith based groups spread across Nigeria.

The group was established in 2007 as a platform for the protection and defence of democracy, justice and the rule of law in Nigeria.

CSC-MAP has been involved in peace building and conflict prevention in the past 16 years through workshops, training advocacy and networking in urban and rural communities in Nigeria.

Finally, Ihedioha Dumps  PDP

0

By Akinwale Kasali

His resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was long expected. It was not a question of if former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Rt Honourable Emeka Ihedioha will dump the Party, it was a question of when. The when Finally came on Tuesday, April 23. On that day, Ihedioha, a former Governor of Imo State, whose tenure in 2019 was cut short by the Supreme Court which sacked finally quit.

The seed to his dumping the Party was sown in 2023 when he and the National Secretary of the PDP, Samuel Anyanwu, popular as Sam Daddy, engaged each other in a battle for supremacy.

Ihedioha rightly wanted to fly the Governorship flag of the Party again. But Anyanwu, who had squared off with him in 2019, and fought to the Supreme Court  declared interest. That fictionalised the party and weakened Ihedioha’s base. Yet, he had an upper hand as the State Executive Council was loyal to him.

But finally, Ihedioha withdrew interest and Anyanwu, who picked the ticket had a disastrous outing.

When Ihedioha withdrew from the race, it had a run on the State PDP. One day, in one fell swoop seven members of the SEC quit, joined the All Progressives Congress, APC, and pledged  loyalty to Governor Hope Uzodimma.

From that period, Ihedioha literally gave the Party a some space. When in the past few weeks pressures began to mount on him to quit the Party, not a few people felt  Ihedioha was behind it.

However, all that has become history as

Ihedioha has now announced his resignation from the PDP.

In his resignation letter addressed to the leadership of the PDP from the Ward, Local Government, State and the National Headquarters, dated April 23rd, which he personally signed, Ihedioha wrote:

“Since 1998, I have contributed my quota to the development and transformation of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as one of the founding members. All these years, I have taken pride in the fact that the PDP is a party that will always look inward for internal reforms and provide credible leadership for the people, whether in power or outside power. I have had the benefit of serving and benefitting from the party at various levels.

“Regrettably, in recent times, the party has taken on a path that is at variance with my personal beliefs. Despite my attempts to offer counsel, the party is sadly no longer able to carry out internal reforms, enforce its own rules or offer credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

“It is in the light of the foregoing, that I am compelled to offer my resignation from the People’s Democratic Party effective immediately. While this decision was difficult to take, I, however, believe that it is the right one.

Despite this resignation, I will always be available to offer my services towards the deepening of democracy and good governance in Nigeria.”
