Citing no reason for their action, 401 Chairmen and Members of Caretaker Committees running Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas, (LCDAs) in Osun State, have all resigned their positions.

Those that resigned include: 69 Caretaker Chairmen and 332 Caretaker Members drawn from each of the 332 wards in the State.

Their action, however, may not be unconnected with the Supreme Court judgement which de- recognized Local Councils in the country without elected leaders.

The judgement also barred State Governors from meddling with Local Governments funds from the Federation Account.

Their letters of resignation were posted on Social Media, Wednesday, but a clear reason behind their resignation was not given.

The letters were addressed to Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, and dated July 17, 2024.

One of the letters from a Chairman read: “It is with a sense of duty and respect for our democratic principles that I write to tender my resignation from my position as Chairman of the Caretaker Committee for Odo-Otin Local Government, effective immediately.

“As I move on to pursue further opportunities to serve my people, I want to assure you that the good work we have started will not end.

“I remain committed to supporting the growth and development of Odo-Otin Local Government in any capacity I can.”

It is not known if tye Governor would dare appoint another set of Caretaker Committees, or run them with Civil Servants until elections are held.

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Imo State House of Assembly on Wednesday  July 17, 2024, at its plenary, overwhelmingly voted for the removal of the State’s Chief Judge,Theresa  Chikeka.

The  Lawmakers  asked Governor Hope Uzodinma to relieve her of her position on  grounds of alleged age falsification.

The resolution of the House followed deliberations on the report of an Ad hoc committee constituted to investigate the  allegation against her.

The House set up the committee sequel to a petition brought before it by some individuals.

The State Lawmakers noted that age falsification is a grave criminal offence which should not be waved aside.

According to them, many notable figures,in the country, including Judges had in the past  summarily been  dismissed owing to age falsification.

The House stated that the Committee report indicted the Chief Judge for altering her date of birth from 1956 to 1958 ,thus reducing her age by two years.

The Committee, the House noted, described the act as a gross misconduct, unbecoming of a public officer of her standing.

“Following the recommendation of the Committee, and in keeping with the provisions of Section 292 (a) (11) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which lists misconducts as one of the grounds on which a Governor, supported by a two-thirds majority of the House of Assembly, can remove the Chief Judge of a state,

the Imo State House of Assembly has authorized the Governor to remove Hon.Justice Theresa Ebere Chukwuemeka-Chikeka from office as Chief Judge of Imo State” the Imo State Lawmakers stated.

The House, also, noted that in the course of the Committee’s investigation, several individuals, and institutions made both oral and written submissions.

“The submissions, according to the Legislators, formed the basis for the Committee’s findings and recommendations

“They informed that the Chief Judge refused to honour invitations from the House Committee.

Other invited individuals and bodies including the petitioners, Civil Society groups, Head of Service of the State ,Imo state Judicial Council, Director of Adminstration of Nigerian Law School and a host of others registered appearance ,as well as made submissions.

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has insisted that working with Philip Shuaibu as his Deputy is over.

Obaseki’s position was contained in a statement by his Commissioner for Information, Chris Nehikhare.

The Governor’s reaction followed the ruling of a Federal High Court which reinstated Shaibu in office as Deputy Governor, and declared as null and void his impeachment by the House of Assembly as null and void.

The Government’s statement reads: “The Edo State Government, on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, faulted and rejected the judgement of a Federal High Court, Abuja which reinstatement Mr Philip Shaibu as the deputy governor of the State.

“The present Deputy Governor, Mr Godwins Marvellous Omobayo remains the Deputy Governor of the State pending the hearing and determination of an appeal against the judgement of the Court of first instance.

“The Governor Godwin Obaseki-led government of Edo State specifically said that it has filed a stay of execution on the judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja which nullified the impeachment of Philip Shaibu as deputy governor.”

It is Justice James Omotoso of the Federal High Court in Abuja, who set aside the impeachment of Philip Shaibu, a ruling which Obaseki has faulted and rejected.

He has filed an appeal.

“Pending the hearing of the appeal of the judgment of the Federal High Court, the incumbent Deputy Governor, His Excellency, Godwin Marvellous Omobayo, remains and continues to serve as the valid Deputy Governor of Edo State.

“His Excellency, Godwin Marvellous Omobayo will continue to serve in this capacity, and will be recognized as such.”

Obaseki called on Edo residents to remain calm and go about their lawful businesses.

Abia: Two Commissioners Resign From Otti’s Cabinet, PDP Mocks Governor, Says It’s Vote Of No Confidence

Alex Otti - Abia State Governor
Alex Otti, Abia State Governor

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

In a shocking development ,two Commissioners in the Cabinet of the Abia state Government, on Tuesday, July 16 ,2024 parted ways with the administration of Governor Alex Otti. They resigned.

It is not, yet, clear why the Commissioner for Agriculture, Professor Monica Ironkwe and Chima Oriaku, Commissioner for Science and Technology resigned but there are wild speculations.

No official statement has  been issued in that regard by the Abia State Government .

The Commissioners also left without offering any public explanation for their sudden departure from the Cabinet.

But in a somewhat informal reaction, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, on Wednesday, said contrary to speculations, the affected Commissioners were not sacked, but voluntarily resigned their appointments.

However in a swift reaction, the opposition Party in the State, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in a statement signed by Abraham Amah, its Vice Chairman/Ag. State Publicity Secretary, said the resignation of the two Commissioners has vindicated its concerns regarding accountability and transparency quotient of Governor Otti’s Government.

But speculation is that the two Commissioners may have been  sacked by Governor Alex Otti.

However, The Source findings reveal that the Commissioners were, actually, forced to  resign their positions.

An impeccable source revealed that the decision to ship out the Commissioners was finalized by the Governor after the last Executive Council meeting on Monday July,15.

It was gathered that it might not be totally divorced from the need for the Government to reconcile some hazy developments within the two ministries considered not to be in tandem with the policy trust of the administration.

The latest incident brings to three the number of Commissioners that have so far left Governor Otti’s cabinet within the 13 months of its existence.

Earlier, the erstwhile Commissioner for Health ,Dr Ngozi Okoronkwo, was suspended from office. The Government had cited an ongoing inquest into some alleged official misconduct as reason.

The State Governor has, in recent times, repeatedly made it known that he will not hesitate to act ,should any Government officials fall short of the expectations of his administration.

But for the PDP, the resignations are a vote of no confidence in Otti’s administration. Following is the full text of PDP’s reaction.

RESIGNATION OF ALEX OTTI’S COMMISSIONERS VINDICATES PDP’S POSITION ON BOGUS, UNEXPLAINED, AND UNVERIFIABLE EXPENDITURE HEADINGS

“The attention of the Abia PDP has been drawn to the resignation of two commissioners from the cabinet of Abia governor, Alex Otti. The Commissioners are Mr. Chima Oriaku and Prof. Monica Ironkwe, Commissioners for Science & Technology and Agriculture, respectively. This information was contained in a release issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Ukoha Njoku.

“The Abia PDP intel authoritatively revealed that the two commissioners resigned their appointments following disagreements with governor Alex Otti over the huge sums of money that were assigned to expenditure headings within their ministries and the projects which they knew nothing about. The two commissioners had in the past months been inundated with questions from journalists and their constituents about the huge sums of money in some expenditure headings in their Ministries quarterly financial reports, which they were unable to explain. It was at this point that they approached the governor for answers which he could not provide and they elected to leave the cabinet with their reputations intact.

“For instance, the States Fiscal Transparency, Accountability, and Sustainability SEFTAS Q2 expenditure report, as published by the Abia State government on the state website, indicated that whopping sums of N3.4b and N1.6b were spent on the building of ICT centres and agricultural facilities, respectively, and these commissioners claimed that they knew nothing about them. Abia PDP can confirm from very reliable sources that this is the main reason why the two commissioners were pressured to resign and shows a growing display of the governor’s known aversion to tolerance of differing opinions.

“Recall that Abia PDP had raised alarm several times about the unverifiable expenditure headings found on the SEFTAS, like the ICT building for N3.4n, hospital equipment for N2.6b, agric facilities for N1.6b, and renovation of public schools for N4.7b, and the insensitive spending of N11.5b to run the governor’s office from his private residence, as well as the collection of N927m as security votes monthly for a governor that made a song of “I will not collect security votes as a governor” during the campaigns, among others.

“The circumstances surrounding the resignation of the two commissioners have vindicated the Abia PDP about its concerns regarding the accountability and transparency quotients of this government, which it has always known to be minus zero, and have also spiked more speculations about the imminent reshuffling of the Alex Otti cabinet, which Abia PDP intelligence gathers, has been in confusion and disarray as the commissioners complain that they are not carried along in the direction and execution of policies.

“The resignation of two commissioners within one year of the government of Alex Otti is nothing but a vote of no confidence in his government and growing concerns about his democratic credentials as everything about his government is opaque and shrouded in secrecy.

“The resignations also throw more light on the confusion in the Alex Otti administration, especially as these two commissioners were never queried for any infractions or even misdemeanour, and the fact that the commissioner for health, Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo, who has been on suspension and under investigation, was not sacked or pressured to resign alongside the two that left, and the Finance Commissioner, who made an open boast about collecting Abia’s N10m every month just to go to Abuja for FAAC meetings.

We call on the good people of Abia State to always demand for accountability from their government and ensure that they remain eternally vigilant for the sake of our hard-earned democracy.

“The Abia PDP will continue to serve as a viral opposition and shadow government to check the opaque nature of this administration, and we call on the good people of Abia to pressure the government to be more responsible and open in the conduct of Abia government business.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed satisfaction with the judgement of the Federal High Court, Abuja which affirmed the nomination of its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo in the September 21, 2024 Governorship election in Edo State.

The Party described the landmark judgement, which upheld the PDP Edo State Governorship Primary election held on February 22, 2024 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, as victory for democracy, Rule of Law and a well-founded affirmation of the propriety and credibility of the Primary election and PDP’s internal democracy.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had affirmed Dr. Asue Ighodalo as the duly nominated and authentic Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State.

Omotosho while delivering judgment, in the suit marked CS/469/24, held that Dr. Ighodalo was duly nominated at the 22 February primaries election of the PDP which held in Benin City.

PDP in a statement by its spokesman, Debo Ologunagba on Wednesday stated that “The spontaneous jubilation across Edo State at the news of the judgement reaffirms the PDP’s candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo as the undisputed preference of the majority of the people of Edo State in the coming Governorship election.

“The Party notes that the judgement further validates the fact that all the aspirants at the Governorship Primary election were accorded level playing ground in the conduct of the Edo State PDP Congresses and Governorship Primary election that produced Dr. Asue Ighodalo as candidate.

“The PDP congratulates Dr. Asue Ighodalo and urges all Party members to remain united and continue to work together with the majority of the people of Edo State to ensure the victory of our Party and candidate in the September 21, 2024 Governorship election.”

Ondo Medical University Flays Activities Of Faceless Groups

Ondo University of Medical Sciences - UNIMED

By Ayodele Oni

Ondo State University of Medical Sciences, (UNIMED), has raised the alarm over unfounded allegations against the institution by some faceless groups.

The University is reacting to the latest letter to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa by a group, Coalition of Ondo State Indigenes Against Corruption, which called for probe of the University.

The Group’s spokesman, Feyi Emmanuel, had among other things, called for the sack of the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Adesegun Fatusi

“Our demand is simple. Fatusi must go. He has wrecked and crippled the institution financially.

“Mr. Governor, we urge you to urgently intervene and sack Fatusi.

“He has rendered our people jobless by ensuring that 70 per cent of UNIMED staffers are non-indigenes.”

In its reaction, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Isaac Oluyi, in a statement maintained that some of those writing such letters do not know how a university works.

“As far back as 2016 under the leadership of the pioneer VC of the University, there had been spurious allegations bordering on high-handedness, and lopsidedness in appointment, among others by faceless protesters who operate under different unrecognized associations to distract the institution from concentrating on what matters.

“It is therefore not surprising to see the deployment of the stock-in-trade method of these hirelings disguising themselves as stakeholders in the affairs of the university again.

“It’s a familiar terrain. We must however not allow this to fester in the best interest of the university.

“Despite challenging infrastructural deficits and limited resources, the audacious mindset of the VC and his management has enabled the University to start the first Faculty of Medical Rehabilitation in West Africa.

“This operationalized the dream of the first full-fledged school of Public Health in Nigeria with its five departments and five Interdisciplinary centres.

“It commenced the first ever B.Sc. Community Health Sciences in Nigeria, established the first M.Sc. in Health Law and Policy in the country and now a PhD course in that field, partnered with the National Universities Commission (NUC) to bring in more than 10 new courses into the Nigerian university system, and much more.”

Peter Obi

The Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi will be 63 years old on Friday, July 19, 2024.

Reacting ahead of the day, the LP standards bearer directs all those well wishes planning to celebrate him to direct the resources to the poor and the needy in the society.

Writing on his X handle on Wednesday ahead of the day Obi said he would wish for a solemn celebration as usual especially now that the poor and the needy are swelling in our midst.

“On Friday, July 19th, I will be celebrating my 63rd birthday. As usual, it is a time for personal reflection and thanksgiving to Almighty God, who has graciously granted me life, good health, and the opportunity to contribute to the betterment of humanity. I am humbled by the numerous well-wishers, both locally and internationally, who have already begun sending birthday wishes and organizing events in my honour.

“My appeal to my well-wishers and supporters, particularly in Nigeria and Africa, is to use this occasion to fervently pray for our nation and respective countries. Let us present ourselves, as political leaders, to God, so that He may touch our hearts to make sacrifices, utilize public resources for the greater good, and prioritize the needs of the poor and marginalized. Let us also provide better opportunities for our youth to thrive.

“To those organizing events and spending funds in celebration of my birthday, I kindly request that you redirect those resources towards supporting the needy, particularly those in hospitals and schools. Your contributions can help pay medical bills and school fees for the less privileged.

“I also appeal that all gifts intended for my birthday be donated to care homes, schools, and hospitals, which will greatly benefit from your generosity. I have therefore personally,  redirected the resources I would have used for celebrations towards supporting critical areas such as health, education, and poverty alleviation. I firmly believe that through these sacrifices, God Almighty will grant your heartfelt wishes for me and answer our prayers.

“Thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers. I urge you all to remain faithful to Nigeria, our beloved country, and your respective nations. May God Almighty protect, bless, and prosper you and your families, and may He bless our dear nation.”

For the records, on more than one occasion, even before he joined politics, Obi had rejected luxurious gifts from friends as birthday presents. He once rejected a wrist watch worth tens of millions of Naira, and directed the gift bearer to convert it to cash and donate same to schools in rural areas.
