The Kano State Deputy Governor who is the Amirul Hajj of the State Pilgrims asked the Pilgrims to while praying for themselves, their loved ones, remember to pray for the state and Nigeria as a whole.

“These projects are poised to redefine rural landscapes and enhance the livelihood of the populace.

“The epicenter of this transformative initiative includes a 70km expanse from Bridge Madobi to Madobi town ,spanning through Yako to Kaffin Mai Yaki, terminating in Kiru, underscoring the commitment to bolster transportation infrastructure crucial for agricultural and economic growth in rural parts of Kano .

“Additionally, a second project featuring a 15km road and a 200 metre bridge from Madobi town to Kubarachi and Kura showcases the Governor Yusuf’s profound dedication to catalyzing  progress across the semi urban and rural areas”,  the statement further noted.

By Ayodele Oni

What could have led to a situation whereby a 500 level female student of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko (AAUA) in Ondo State, identified as Modupe Ayandare, committing suicide?

This is a poser the Students Union leadership of the university is urging the police to unravel.

Modupe was found dead early Monday  morning in Akungba, in the Akoko South West local government area of the state.

The deceased was a 500-level student of the Agronomy Department, Faculty of Agriculture. Her body was found dead around 4 a.m. on Monday in a white garmet church cloth.

An unconfirmed source said she left her hostel for a vigil on Sunday night and allegedly committed suicide while returning from the church programme.

However, a video shared on X  by a popular user, @YemieFash, suggested that the deceased might not have committed suicide.

YemieFash stated, “The circumstances surrounding her death look very suspicious; video and eyewitness accounts show that she did not commit suicide as presumed.

“I am calling on the @OndopoliceNG to critically investigate this matter, as this looks more like a case of murder.”

The Ondo State Police Command, while responding to @YemieFash’s post on X, confirmed the incident has been reported at the Akungba Police.

The leadership of the students union in a statement, signed by Olaogbebikan Noble said “We express in strong terms our dissatisfaction and agony with respect to the death of one of our student, Ayandare Modupe.A 500 level student of department of agronomy (agronomy departmental president).

Innoson Motors vs Abia State Legislators: Gov Otti’s Penchant For Dishing Out Misinformation To Abians PDP

Alex Otti - Governor of Abia State

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Amidst the ongoing exchange of words between the leadership of the Abia state House of Assembly and Management of Innoson Motors over a perceived delay in the supply of operation vehicles for the state lawmakers ordered by the state  Government, the Abia state Peoples Democratic Party PDP has called for a regime of  transparency in the award of contracts by the authorities .

The Source reports that the Speaker Emmanuel Emereuwa-led State Legislative body had last week berated the management of the indigenous vehicle manufacturing firm for  unnecessary delays in delivering despite having  been paid fully the contract sum by the Abia state Government.

The Legislators in a letter addressed to the auto manufacturing giant also threatened to revoke the contractual agreement in the face of any further delay.

However, Innoson Motors  in its response, while domiciling the delay on remodeling efforts to meet Governor Alex Otti’s  specifications , said it has neither requested for,  nor received a dime from the Abia State Government in  line with its operational ethos of requesting for payments only after delivery.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson Abraham Amah on Monday June 17 2024, and made available to The Source, the Abia PDP said the revelation by Innoson Motors that it has not received any payment from the Abia state Government also signposts a total and embarrassing  disconnect between the roles and actions of the operators of the Abia state Government.

The PDP noted that the situation calls for concern as it intends to assault the concept of separation of powers and at the same time debases democratic tenets.

According to the Abia PDP, the House of Assembly being an independent arm of the Government should be the one to award the contact for the supply of its members’ vehicles.

“The Current spat between the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly Emmanuel Emeruwa and indigenous vehicle manufacturer, Innoson Motors regarding the non-supply of vehicles purportedly paid for by the state Governor for members of the state House of Assembly is not only needless, but reveals a lack of due process in the conduct of Government business.

“The revelation made by Innoson Motors that it has not received any payment from the Abia state Government shows a total and embarrassing disconnect between the roles and actions of the operators of the Abia state Government.

“The Speaker had said, repeatedly, that the Governor had told him that he had made payments for the vehicles to Innoson Motors .

“The Abia PDP is concerned that this situation assaults the concept of separation of powers and debases our democracy. In the first place, it is an infringement on the independence of the legislature that the Governor should be the one to award contracts for the purchase of vehicles for legislators

“As a separate arm of Government ,the Assembly should be the one to award the contracts for its vehicles ,its budget should be on the first line charge to enable it maintain its independence .

“This unconventional situation brings the legislators under the influence of the Governor and it is difficult to see how they can maintain their independence if they have to depend on him for their welfare.

“What is even more shocking is that the Speaker had relied on oral evidence from the Governor who told him that he had made payments for the vehicles and unfortunately, the company ,not the Abia PDP ,refuted the Governor’s claims.

“That shows that the award did not pass through  due process. What is more unfortunate is that the Governor’s penchant for giving out wrong information to the public is also on full display within the highest echelon of the operators of this Government .

“If the Governor, cannot give the speaker of the state House of Assembly ,who is the number three person in the Government hierarchy ,the correct information in a financial matter as little as the purchase of vehicles ,we cannot imagine how the Governor would give ordinary Abians correct information on other matters

“And every Abian is a  witness to the constant misinformation the Governor wilfully dishes out all the time.” the PDP statement reads.

Detained EndSARs Protesters: Police Lacks Data – Ondo Activist

EndSARS Protesters in Ondo State

By Ayodele Oni

An Akure, Ondo State based Lawyer and Human Rights Activist,Tope Temokun, has backed remark by Kaduna Senator, Shehu Sani that there are still endSARs detainees in the custody of the Nigeria Police.

Temokun, in a statement in Akure on Monday, pointed out that the police lacked authoritative data on endSARs detainees.

The Police spokesman, Olumuyuwa Adejobi in a press statement, on Sunday, said “the Nigeria Police affirms that no individual is being unlawfully detained by the Nigeria Police Force or any other security agency in Nigeria due to the EndSARS protest.

“All arrested individuals have been processed according to the law, and none remain unlawfully detained.”

But the Akure Activist stated that “The reaction by the police that all individuals arrested have been processed according to law and none remains in custody, citing the facts that Governor Sanwo-Olu pardoned about 100 suspects in Lagos suffers from fallacy of hasty generalization.

“ENDSARS protesters were arrested across the states of the country and apart from Lagos, which other state officially pardoned those arrested in connection with the October 2020 ENDSARS protest?

“What is the percentage of those arrested in Lagos and outside Lagos that had legal representations and how many of those legal representations, billed or pro bono, followed those cases to logical conclusions?

“I expect the government to come up with data and statistics on these. That is when the Police could now officially make a conclusive statement on the matter.

“Many ENDSARS protesters who had no legal representation  after their arrest and since their arrest would have been forgotten in various remand centres across the country.”

He cited a case of one of the female detainees in Akure that had to give birth in police custody before a legal representation was arranged for her.

“She was taken to the State CID, Ondo State Police Command Headquarters at Alagbaka-Igbatoro, Akure and detained there briefly before being taken before the Magistrate Court Akure, to be remanded at the Surulere prison, Ondo since the 24th day of November, 2020.

“She was in prison till the 16th day of June, 2021 when she delivered a baby boy in prison which threw her case up for global attention to her ordeal.

“I represented Kemisola in court. On the 22nd of June 2021 she was granted bail by the High Court of Ondo State sitting in Akure after nine months of her arrest and remand since October 22, 2020 and after seven days she gave birth in prison.

“How many people knew that the case against the ENDSARS detainee, Kemisola, was not dropped and was prosecuted in court by the Ondo State Government ever since till the 25th day of July, 2023, that the government withdrew the charge against the young girl.

“Police lack the genuine record and data, as a primary source of information, to hastily respond to Shehu Sanni’s patriotic call, with denial and with such vague phrase that they have been processed according to law.”

Ondo: Akure Indigenes Rally Support For Deputy Gov Nominees, Thank NNPP For Choice

Olugbenga Edema

By Ayodele Oni

Groups and associations in Akure speaking communities in Ondo state have applauded the decision of the governorship candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, (NNPP) Gbenga Edema to nominate one of the indigenes as a running mate in November election.

The people that spread across Akure North, and south, part of Ifedore have been apprehensive following non emergence of any politician from the area as a running mate.

Some of them have accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of deceiving them to support him during the primaries with an assurance to pick his running mate from the area.

After the primary, Aiyedatiwa opted to stick to his incumbent deputy, Adelani, who is from Owo.

Mr. Gabriel Owoyemi, an elder and indigene of Ifedore Local Government commended the NNPP for nominating Rotimi Adeyemi, a retired Local Government  Environmentalist and an indigene of Akure, in Akure South Local Government Area of the state as the New Nigeria People’s Party Deputy Governorship candidate.

He described the decision of the NNPP in the choice of Adeyemi, as Deputy Governor nominee as a good turn that will be rewarded with votes in the other.

Another Akure leader, Sunday Temitope Akintide-Gbangba,  commended the NNPP on the choice of  Adeyemi as Deputy Governorship candidate of the party.

He noted that it is only the NNPP of all the political parties in the State that has chosen an indigene of Akure as Deputy Governorship candidate.

The immediate Past President of Association of Akures in the Local Government of Ondo State,  Oluwole Ademoyegun thumbed up the choice of Adeyemi as the NNPP Deputy Governorship candidate in the State.

He noted that it is an oversight for all other parties to have neglected the choice of making an indigene of Akure speaking area their Deputy Governorship candidate.

The Oke Aro group a social-philanthropist group in the Akure South Local Government area,  commended the NNPP on its choice of making Adeyemi, the running mate to the party Governorship candidate, Edema.

In a release by the Vice President of the group, Abayomi Ojo, praised the NNPP on the choice of Adeyemi, as the party Deputy Governor nominee, saying it is a right decision and the placing of a square peg in a square hole.

He noted that all other political parties neglected picking an indigene of Akure speaking area for the Deputy Governor’s slot, save for the NNPP.

He stated that the voting population of the people of Akure speaking areas are such that could not be toyed with and these shall be delivered to their son  at the election.

Abia Reels Under Abysmal Internally Generated Revenue, As Business  Operators, Traders Continue To Evade Taxes/levies

0
Alex Otti - Abia State Governor

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Hopes of Abia State Government  financing  a substantial part of its 2024 fiscal expenditure with internally generated revenue IGR appears to be hitting the rocks, despite the huge potentials offered by the widely acclaimed status of the state as a commercial and industrial hub.

As it is, the state authorities seem, hamstrung on how to handle the delicate refusal of most commercial and business players to honour their statutory obligations without touching the sour point in its relationship with them.

The Source findings have authoritatively revealed that a large part of the traders operating at the several high profile markets, thousands of business actors and tricycle operators in the two major cities of Abia – Aba and Umuahia have continued to display nonchalant and out right disdain to all entreaties to pay their statutory annual revenue to the authorities .

This has left the Government with only the twin options of the monthly federation allocation and loan facilities as veritable means of financing its activities.

Only a few weeks back, the Aba zonal Coordinator of the Abia State Harmonized Taskforce, Chief Uche Nwogu, revealed the ingenious ways tricycle operators in the state have been evading rent/tax payments. In an interview with the Source at the thick of the protest that trailed the decision of the state to migrate from daily to weekly payments of rents and taxes by tricycle operators, said:

“The tricycle riders will come out early in the morning to operate and will disappear before the time the revenue collectors will come out between 8 am and 9 am .

“Then they (tricyclist) will re- appear in the evening when the revenue collectors must have closed . In this way they continue to evade the payments of statutory levies to the Government .

“So to stem this ugly situation ,we came up with the weekly payments arrangements with their union leaders as stakeholders .In stead of payments of N350 daily, we asked them to be paying N 2,150 weekly .

“The whole idea is to ensure that ,Government is not denied of its statutory revenue .”

But this policy was almost halted at the time the tricyclists protested. And findings have shown that it is still business as usual ,with a large number of the tricyclists still evading payments of rents and levies.

The traders at the various markets and other business operators remain the most culpable in the rent/levy payments evasion.

At inception, the Government had opted for a harmonized annual levy/rent payment of N 19,500 for an average shop owner and business player ,for the purpose a seamless collection.

But that has not helped  the situation as over 80%  are yet to meet their 2023 statutory obligations to the Government, talk less those of the 2024 .

The Source findings have shown that out of the over 50 high profile markets that dot the business landscape of Abia only the Eziukwu market in Aba has given a serious thought to the issue of payments of annual statutory levies.

According to a letter addressed to the Executive Chairman of Abia state Board of Internal Revenue BIR Prof. Ogbonnaya Udechukwu ,by the executives dated June 6 2024 and  sighted by this magazine the market noted that it has so far remitted about N32 Million to the coffers of the state Government.

The amount represents payments by the market traders for  the 2023 statutory annual Government levies.

“We are directed by the central executives of Eziukwu Market to write you as follows:

That for the IGR of 2023 our market have made a total payment of thirty one million ,six hundred and twenty eight thousand Naira .

“That there are others who have not paid ,and we are waiting for the Board of Internal Revenue to send their taskforce for the recovery from those who have refused to pay .

“Furthermore, we are happy to inform you that we have procured computer sets for the computerization of the markets operations in keeping with our promise” part of the letter jointly signed by Chief Alphonsus Udeigbo and Darlington Achonu Chairman and Secretary respectively reads.

“Instructively, for a state that has continued to reel under the hugely  negative impact of evasion of payments of  rents/levies  ,the Government also appear to be in a bigger dilemma over how to confront the situation without drawing  down from its political capital.

“Worried about the continued loss of statutory revenue ,Prof Udechukwu head of the BIR ,had early December last year written to the heads of all security agencies in the state soliciting their support and cooperation in its efforts to recover its 2023 statutory levies from defaulters .

“In the letter ,also sighted by the Source, the board had signaled its intentions to embarked on the recovery efforts beginning from December 20 ,2023 with its primary targets being markets ,business premises and parks .

However, it later backed out of the planned revenue collection enforcement, due to what multiple sources said was Government unwillingness to disrupt Christmas business activities of the defaulters.

Abia State is widely projected  to be one of  the states in the country with the  potentials to rake in about N10 billion as monthly internally revenue.

But as it is, it is doubtful if the State, currently generates up to N 1. 5 billion on monthly basis due mainly to the unwillingness of taxable adults and business organizations to leave up to their statutory obligations.

Guinness Not Leaving Nigeria

1
Guinness Company

Guinness Nigeria Plc says the company is not exiting the country contrary to reports to that effect.

A Singapore-based Tolaram Group recently acquired the 58 percent stake of the company from the original owner Diageo, a British multinational alcoholic beverage company, steering up controversy over whether Guiness is still interested in doing business in Nigeria.

Those making the suggestion said what is happening in the company has further added impetus to reports that multi-nationals are leaving the country due to the current unfavorable economic situation.

But in a statement on Sunday, Guiness described reported “plan to exit from the Nigerian market,” as “false/malicious misinformation”.

The statement said in part: “Contrary to rumours being peddled on various media platforms, Guinness Nigeria remains firmly committed to its operations in Nigeria and is poised for a new phase of growth and innovation.

“Our unwavering commitment to Nigeria is evident in the substantial investments in infrastructure, employment, backward integration and our community development and social responsibility initiatives.

“The recent announcement of the partnership between Diageo and Tolaram Group further reinforces unequivocally that Guinness Nigeria remains committed to Nigeria and has no intention of exiting the dynamic Nigerian market. Our business will continue strongly, and no jobs or factories will be adversely affected as a result of this new partnership.”

Instructively, Guiness Nigeria in January this year declared over N5 billion profit loss for the year ended December 2023. The company had blamed the loss on Nigeria’s foreign exchange problem.

Oyo: “I have No Rift With Makinde,”- Ladoja; Speaks On Olubadan Coronation

0
Rashidi Ladoja and Seyi Makinde

Rashidi Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo state says there’s no rift between him and the state governor, Seyi Makinde.

Ladoja made the remark on Sunday while speaking with journalists at his Ibadan residence during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

The former governor spoke amidst the suggestion that the governor had deliberately delayed the coronation of the Olubadan of Ibadanland in other to spite Ladoja, who is next in line to the Olubadan throne as the Otun Olubaban.

The state governor recently blamed the health condition of the new Olubadan for the delay in his coronation.

But watchers of politics of the state insist that the governor’s action may not be unconnected with his perceived political difference with the former governor.

Recall that Ladoja did not support Maknide during his electioneering campaign last year to return to the Agodi Government House. The former governor had thrown his weight behind Teslim Folarin, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Makinde later won the election.

Not a few political analysts in the state insist that the disagreement between Makinde and Ladoja has worsened since the governor was re-elected.

Speaking yesterday, Ladoja said he had no problem with the governor, insisting that they have a cordial relationship.

He also clarified the controversy surrounding the coronation of the Olubadan, saying the governor’s duty is just to present the staff of office to the new monarch after he has been crowned by the ‘Oluwo’ of Ibadanland.

According to Ladoja,  “I am not the target of Governor Seyi Makinde. He is not delaying the coronation because of me. The governor sent a huge cow and many bags of rice to me for the Sallah. He had called to greet me for the festival.

“It is the people of Ibadan land who will crown the new Olubadan, and the governor’s role is only to present the staff and instrument of office to the new monarch.

“It is the Oluwo of Ibadan land who crowns a new Olubadan and not the governor.

“The Olubadan will be crowned at lle Ose-Meji, from where he will  go to Mapo for the governor to present him the staff and instrument of office.”

Recall that Ladoja and Makinde were once political allies, but have been set apart lately due to the power struggle over the soul of the state.

PSC: “Tell Nigerians Why You Sacked Arase”, PANDEF Tackles Tinubu

0
Solomon Arase

THE Pan-Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, has condemned the removal of a former Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase as the Chairman of Police Service Commission, PSC by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the action as provocative and disrespect for the rule of law.

In a statement on Sunday signed by PANDEF leader Chief Edwin Clark, the group said the chairman of the commission cannot just be removed indiscriminately without a recourse to constitutional provision.

According to Clark, the Constitution specified the process in which the chairman of a statutory body like the PSC could be removed from office.

Obviously, PANDEF said President Tinubu did not follow these processes before firing Arase.

Chief Clark accused the president of sacrificing competence, integrity, and efficiency and merit on the altar of favoritism.

Recall that President Tinubu sacked Arase on June 10 following which he replaced him with Hashimu Argungu, a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG.

No reason was given by the Presidency for his removal, but those familiar with the issue said Arase may have been sacked due to allege abuse of office and corruption.

The PANDEF leader however challenged President Tinubu to ‘tell’ Nigerians while Arase waw removed barely two years into office as the Chairman of the PSC.

Part of the statement read, “We, hereby, express profound disappointment, and denounce the unjust manner in which Dr. Solomon Arase, a former Inspector General of Police, was relieved of his duties as Chairman of the Police Service Commission by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday, 10th June 2024.

“PANDEF views Arase’s removal as unwarranted, and an unnecessary provocation that reflects negatively on Tinubu’s administration, indicating a lack of regard for the nation’s laws that Mr. President swore to uphold and protect.

“This singular act further portrays this administration as one that does not prioritize competence, integrity, and efficiency; sacrificing merit on the altar of favoritism.

“The question arises as to why any serious government would dismiss a personality like Solomon Arase, who had initiated positive reforms and improvements at the Commission, and given his meritorious track record as a diligent police officer, who rose through the ranks to become the 18th Inspector General of Police of the Nigeria Police Force, and retired with dignity.

“Solomon Arase, a former Inspector General and a native of Edo State in the South-South region of Nigeria, was appointed as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) in January 2023 by former President Muhammadu Buhari. Solomon Arase’s tenure as Chairman of the Police Service Commission lasted only about 16 months of the four-year term.

“According to Section 3, subsection (1)a of the Police Service Commission Act 2002, subject to the provisions of Section 4 of the Act, a member of the Commission, other than ex-officio members, shall each hold office for a term of four years and no more.

“The Act also details the conditions for removal from office in Sections 4 as cited below: (1) Notwithstanding the provisions of section 3 of this Act, a person shall cease to hold office as member of the Commission if:

(a) He becomes bankrupt, suspends payment or compounds with his creditors; or(b) he is convicted of a felony or any offence involving dishonesty of fraud; or (c)

“He becomes of unsound mind, or is incapable of carrying out his duties; or (d) He is guilty of serious misconduct in relation to his duties; or (e) In the case of a person possessed of professional qualifications, he is disqualified or suspended, other than at his own request, from practicing his profession in any part of the world by an order of a competent authority made in respect of that member.

“(2) A member of the Commission may be removed by the President if he is satisfied that it is not in the interest of the Commission or the interest of the public that the member should continue in office.

“5 (1) Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 4 of this Act, the Chairman and any other member, may at any time be removed from that office by the President acting on an address supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate praying that he be removed for inability to discharge the functions of the office (whether arising from infirmity of mind or body or any other cause of misconduct).

“The pivotal question remains, “What warranted Solomon Arase’s removal from office by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu?”

The magazine reported that Arase was appointed as PSC Chairman by former President Muhammadu Buhari on January 24, 2023 for a five year single term. His removal, therefore, barely two years in office is regarded too premature.
