The Ondo State  Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Awolowo Ajaka has said that the state government is in the process of securing additional financing running into several billions from development partners that will be used to enhance the health services in the state.

Ajaka made this known during the commemoration of World Hepatitis Day with the theme of “It is time to act” and focuses on improving access of the populace to diagnosis and treatment which he said was apt.

This is just as the state government disclosed that it has discovered there is a peculiarity in hepatitis infection among hepatitis patients in the state.

The Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Health Matters, Prof. Simidele Odimayo, disclosed this in Akure after a sensitisation road walk to mark World Hepatitis Day.

The Commissioner described Hepatitis as a viral infection that targets the liver, causing inflammation and affecting its ability to function properly.

“There are several types of Hepatitis but the commonest ones which are of public health concerns and which are Hep A, B, C, & E.Hepatits A & E are transmitted through ingestion of contaminated food or water.

“It is often associated with poor sanitation. While Hep B & C are usually transmitted through contact with infectious body fluids, such as blood and sexual fluids through practices (similar to transmission of HIV virus), such as sexual acts, bold transfusion and sharing of contaminated needles and transmission from mother to child sharps among others”

He therefore  emphasized  on prevention which is hinged on well-established strategies like Immunisation, compulsory screening of blood and blood products. Strict guidelines on sterilisation of medical instruments and ban on reuse of needles.

He explained that “the clinical features of Hepatitis can vary widely, some individual may not even experience any clinical features.

“While others may experience mild or severe symptoms.  it can also present as acute illness which may resolve within days or weeks or progress to chronic illness.

“The common features include: Fever, Fatigue, Loss of appetite, Nausea and vomiting, Abdominal pain, Dark urine and Jaundice”

He advised pregnant women to always insist  on screening for  Hepatitis B and encouraged them to deliver in hospital where they can have access to skilled birth attendants  and sterile instruments, which he said would prevent  mother to Child transmission.

According to him, if any mother is already infected with Hep B drugs will be administered to the baby immediately after birth

He reiterated that the  Government would continue to create awareness among the public to embrace immunisation, hospital deliveries and avoid patronizing quacks.

The commissioner also informed that the government was set to commence  the screening and regulation of food vendors in the state, which he said was the first step to ridding the state of  Hepatitis A&E which are contracted through food ingestion.

On his part, the governor’s aide explained that the state government was, however, trying to know more about the peculiarity to tackle it accordingly.

“The state government has observed that there is a peculiarity in the viral hepatitis that we have in the state.

“We have seen people with low viral load in hepatitis coming up with complications.”

The special adviser further explained that ordinarily, the low viral load by the European Community for Hepatitis doesn’t need treatment.

“But in our own case, these patients with low viral load are coming with complications of hepatitis like liver cancer.

“Then, we have looked at it to know the type of hepatitis that our people are having.”

A socio cultural and political group in the South-west, Yoruba Ronu, has appealed to the Traditional Rulers in the region to support President Bola  Tinubu and prevent any protest in Yoruba land.

In a letter signed by the Group’s Chairman, Prince Diran Iyantan, addressed to the State Chairmen of the Council of Obas, the group expressed concerns over individuals within the community who are posing as opposition voices against the President and working to destabilize the Government.

The group emphasized that with the present state of the country’s economy, it is unfair to blame President Tinubu for the current situation, as it is a result of years of neglect by previous administrations.

The group highlighted the President’s efforts to address the challenges facing the country through initiatives such as the Presidential Economic Coordination Council and the Economic Stabilisation Programme.

The Yoruba Ronu Group warned of impending uproar in Yoruba land, particularly in Lagos, where violence and disruption against the government of President Tinubu are being planned.

It called on the traditional rulers to ensure peace and stability in their domains and to take proactive measures to prevent any disruptions from occurring.

It urged the traditional rulers to be vocal in their support for President Tinubu and to continue speaking out against issues affecting the Yoruba people.

It stressed the importance of standing united in support of their own son who is now Nigeria’s President and working towards a brighter future for Yoruba land.

The Yoruba Ronu Group thanked the traditional rulers for their attention to the matter and their continued partnership with the present government to bring about unprecedented development to Yoruba land.

It expressed optimism about the ongoing massive coastal road project that will benefit several Yoruba States and South-south Nigeria.

The Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, has thrown its weight behind the proposed August 1, 2024, planned nationwide protest against hardship and sufferings of the masses.

Alaye Theophilus, President, IYC Worldwide, said it was necessary for Niger Delta Youths to come out peacefully and protest against bad governance.

The IYC President, who reacted to statements issued by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.Col. Lagbaja, Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, State Governors, Ministers, and other top Government functionaries asking Nigerians not to stage any protest, rather,  they should persevere, promising to address the situation.

Theophilus said Nigerians had, at various times, from the colonial era to the present dispensation, protested to register their displeasure against bad governance and wondered why the present administration is kicking against citizens’ rights to express their dissatisfaction over the current hardship in the country.

He recalled how the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC,  Government rode to power in 2015 on the crest of protests against the then Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, led Federal Government of former President Goodluck  Jonathan for its inability to tackle rising insecurity, unemployment, and corruption.

According to him, protest is a universal right of citizens to draw attention of those in authority to examine their conduct, programmes, and policies and tailor them for the country’s overall development.

“The hardship faced by the people of the Niger Delta, particularly those at the hinterlands, is becoming unbearable as a litre of fuel now sells for over N2,000, one pure water for N100, and other essential commodities have gone beyond the reach of the people.

“Sudden deaths have become a common occurrence in rural areas due to hunger and untold suffering,” he stated.

He advised security agents to be cautious in their approach and urged them not to be overzealous and brutal while monitoring the protest in order to maintain law and order.

The authorities of the Bayero University Kano, BUK, have  arrested two suspected fake lecturers.

The suspects were apprehended for, allegedly, compelling freshers of the Institution to buy text books introduced by them.

They were said to have threatened the new students with failure in their courses should they fail to buy the text books.

A statement from the University’s Special Bulletin Publicity Secretary, Bala Abdullahi, on Saturday, July 27 2024, gave the names of the two suspected fake lecturers as David Iluebe and Chike Eke from Edo and Delta States respectively.

They were said to have entered the Faculty of Engineering Lecture Hall ,and introduced themselves as lecturers.

They proceeded to also introduce about four text books to the 100 level students, covering the Use of English, Statistics, Nigerian People and Culture, Algebra, Geometry, Mathematics.

Thereafter, they were said to have threatened that failure to buy the books which they claimed will form part of the continuous assessment, will attract failure in the examination proper.

Not ready to fail any of the examinations, the students were said to have positively responded, leading to the purchase  of several copies of the various text books.

But luck ran out on them when University security agents, based on intelligence, rounded them up on Thursday, July 25, 2024.

“The Two persons were, however, arrested on Thursday July 25, 2024 by security operatives for suspected criminal trespass, impersonation ,and cheating.

“During preliminary investigation ,the suspects claimed that they were the authors of the books they were selling to the students and they confessed to all the allegations leveled against them ,revealing that they were hustling to make a living due to lack of job.

“The suspects further disclosed that this was the second time they were coming to the state ,having been to the Kano state Polytechnic earlier this year.

“This is a very disturbing emerging trend in our tertiary institutions which are being invaded by crooks and charlatans masquerading as academics in order to dupe and exploit our unsuspecting students”, part of the statement reads.

While indicating that the suspects will be handed over to the appropriate authorities, the University  authorities cautioned students and the public at large to be wary of the activities of criminal elements.

A Group, under the aegis of Women for Peace, Security, and Social Inclusion Initiatives, has urged the organizers of the planned August 1 nationwide protest against hunger to seek dialogue with the Federal Government, rather than staging a protest that may be possibly hijacked by miscreants.

The Group said there are potentials for violence to emanate from the protest, which will, at the end, cause harm to innocent citizens.

Tinu Alade-Abiola, Chairperson of the Group, at an event in Abuja on Saturday, emphasized the importance of peace, dialogue, and national unity in addressing the country’s challenges.

Alade-Abiola noted that the planned protest, scheduled to take place from August 1 to August 10, could lead to violence, destruction, and harm to innocent citizens, including women and children.

She urged the protesters to consider the consequences of their actions, and instead engage in dialogue with the government to address their grievances.

She emphatically stressed that the current administration inherited significant challenges and historical traumas, and that patience and understanding are necessary as they work to address these issues.

She also noted that the experiences of past protests, such as the #End SARS protest, have shown that violence and destruction only lead to further suffering and division.

According to her, “Our appeal is strong, and we urge the organizers to seek dialogue instead of protest.

“We all know that no peaceful protest has ever remained peaceful in Nigeria, Africa, and the rest of the world.

“Violent protests and demonstrations only lead to further division and destruction, hindering our progress as a nation and undermining the efforts of those striving for positive change.

“Our actions today will shape the Nigeria of tomorrow, and it is our responsibility to ensure that we leave behind a legacy of peace and unity for the younger generations.”

The group also highlighted the impact of violent protests on the country’s economy, healthcare, and law enforcement agencies.

Senator Ifeanyi Ubah
Late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

By Gideon Njoku

Senator Ifeanyi Ubah is dead.

The Senator who, until his death, represented Anambra South Senatorial District in the Senate, died Friday night in London.

A reliable source told this medium that Ubah who, recently, travelled to London, slumped at an event, and passed on after all efforts to revive him failed.

Ubah was a business man, serial entrepreneur and politician. He was the founder and owner of Capital Oil.

He had traversed Political Parties and had sought to be the Governor of Anambra  State on, at least, three occasions.

Recently, he dumped the YPP under which he went to the Senate twice for the All Progressives Congress, APC,  and was planning to challenge Governor Charles Soludo for the Governorship seat. He had been a member of the Senate since 2019.

Even though the cause of his death is not yet known, those close to him confirm he had always, for years, had problems with his heart. This has led to the speculation that he died either of a cardiac arrest or a massive heart attack.

Recall that Ubah, in September of 2022, survived an attack by gunmen who ambushed his convoy in his native Anambra State. He survived the ordeal thanks to his bullet proof SUV, but at least five people, including his Security Details were not that lucky. They lost their lives.

A known philanthropist, he used his Ifeanyi Ubah Foundation to carry out a number of laudable projects and helped the underprivileged.

A couple of years ago, while still at the Senate, he read Law at the Baze University, Abuja.

His death has thrown his native Nnewi into deep mourning and confusion.

Born on September 3, 1971, he was from Otolo, Nnewi, Anambra State, and was happily married to Uchenna, with whom he had lovely children.

More details, later.

Kwakwanso: Protest Not The Answer; Vote Tinubu Out

0
Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso

Former Defence Minister Rabiu Kwakwanso  says the current leadership in the country should be changed through the ballot and not violence.

Kwakwanso, one of the top opposition leaders in the country spoke amidst a potential nationwide protest next month by some angry youths over the current hardship in the country.

Those angry with the government have slated the protest for August 1-10, 2024 despite call for cancellation by the government and well meaning religious and political leaders.

Security agencies say the protest could be hijacked by some unscrupulous elements to unleash mayhem on the country.

Kwakwanso, the leader of the New  Nigerian Peoples party, NNPP, the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports said on Friday that he recognised the challenges being faced by Nigerians at the moment, but said protest is not the way out because of its potential to set the country back.

According to him, the best way to address the current problems facing the country is to show the current leadership the way out of power through the ballot box.

He explained that the country has derailed that Nigerians now have the opportunity to teach those responsible a big lesson by voting them out of power.

He said, “It is with a deep sense of responsibility that I share my thoughts on the current situation in Nigeria.

“We find ourselves in avoidable hardship because our leaders have missed some steps since 2007. However, there is always room for correction and setting the country on the right track for economic development, prosperity, and better welfare of citizens.

“In these trying times, our nation stands at a crossroads. Our collective frustration with bad governance has reached a boiling point, and the urge to protest is strong. As an elder and patriotic Nigerian, I share your concerns and your desire for change. However, I urge you to consider the consequences of national protests and to channel your energy into a more effective and peaceful means of transformation through the power of your ballot.”

The Inspector General of Police,  IGP, Kayode Egbetokun claimed on Friday that some foreigners were trying to use the protest to destabilise the country.
