Media practitioners have been urged to promote the newly established South East Economic Development Commission.

Member representing Ogbaru federal constituency of Anambra state, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene made the call in his lecture entitled, “Defining A New Economic And Societal Order: The Role Of The Media” which he delivered at a summit organised by the South East Zone of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) which the theme was “South East: Towards A Robust Blueprint For Sustainable Development” held in Awka, Anambra state on Wednesday.

Ogene who is Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy and leader, Labour Party, LP, Caucus of the House also tasked the media to sensitise electorate in the South East zone against monetisation of those being voted into public positions.

The federal lawmaker’s lecture delivered on his behalf by the Dean of Social Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Professor Collins Okafor.

Though Hon. Ogene in the paper listed several challenges limiting optimal performance of media practitioners citing for instance poor remuneration, harassment and intimidation, poor necessary working tools, censorship by media owners, especially government-owned media organisations, difficulty in sourcing information among others, he, however, urged media professionals to remain resilient in discharging their duties.

The lawmaker bemoaned influence of money in political office recruitment in the South East saying “Coming down to the South East, it’s important to note that the practice of democratic culture remains alarmingly low among the electorate in the South East, where leadership recruitment for political offices is often heavily influenced by monetary considerations.

“To address this, the media must intensify its efforts to sensitize the public, emphasizing the importance of electing candidates with the capacity to deliver good governance for the greater good.

“This shift in focus is crucial to counter the prevalent practice of voters prioritizing personal gains over collective benefits during elections, especially as Anambra election draws near”, he rather advised.

The lawmaker who was honoured with ‘Distinguished Professional Service Award” at the summit stated that the media has not adequately reported on critical issues affecting the South East region.

He, stated, there were scarcity of essential infrastructure, such as roads, particularly in rural areas, insecurity, inadequate health facilities, insufficient public school structures , inadequate teacher training and skills, and, urged media to fight the sad situation.

He also called on the media to promote accountability, expose corrupt public office holders in the region to promote development and progress in the region.

He commended those who contributed to the successful signing into law of the South East Development Commission Act by President Bola Tinubu.

“This is a significant milestone for the region, and I urge the media to play a crucial role in projecting the commission’s work.

He urged the media to educate the people of the South East on the gains of the South East Economic Development Commission which he said was aimed to develop the entire zone.

He advised the media to ensure that the agency of the economic development commission was accountable and adhered to its mandate once established so that it would be beneficial to the people.

National president of the NUJ, Comrade Chris Isiguzo and South East Zone vice-president of the union, Comrade Emma Ifesinachi in their separate addresses praise Hon. Ogene for the various sterling contributions he had made towards promoting good governance in the country.

Comrade Ifesinachi stated that the honour presented to Ogene was to express gratitude to him for his contributions and to encourage other public future political officer holders to emulate him.

All Aspirants to various offices at the Local Council level in Kano State are to undergo a mandatory drug test before being cleared to participate in the exercise.

The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission, KANSIEC,  which announced the measure on Wednesday July 31, 2024, has also scheduled the Local Government polls for November 30, 2024.

Only last weekend, the State’s Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Gwarzo, at the formal launch of the Forum for State Commissioners of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Abuja informed that Kano State was poised to conduct a free and fair Council Polls in deference to the Supreme Court decision .

He also assured that the State will go the whole hog in enthroning a full scale Local Council Autonomy .

The Source reports that the highest Court in the land had on Thursday, June 20, 2024, ruled to affirm the financial independence of the Third Tier of Government in Nigeria.

The Supreme Court in its verdict also directed that all accruals from the Federation Account  to Councils under unelected officials be withheld.

The ruling has since jolted States into fast tracking election processes in the Local Governments.

The last time election was held for Local Council offices in Kano was on January 16, 2021.

Addressing the Media the Chairman of KANSIEC, Professor Sani Malunfashi, warned that he will not hesitate to expose  attempts by any aspirants to compromise the drug test exercise and or the outcome of the election proper.

He re-echoed the earlier promise by the State Deputy Governor that the Elections will be free, and fair.

The Election will be conducted in all the 484 wards of the 44 Local Councils of the State .

Principally, should the All Progressive Congress APC decide to participate,  the battle will then be a straight one between it and the  ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party NNPP.

Governor Abba Yusuf ,and his political mentor, former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso are the propelling force in the NNPP, while immediate past Governor  of the state Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje will be leading the battle for the APC of which he is the current National Chairman.

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, says Onyeka Onwenu’s death has devastated him.

“She left us with a striking song in her last performance on earth ‘One Love Keep Us Together’.

“Yesterday provided a totally devastating moment for me as I witnessed a tragic event that will forever be etched in my memory.

” I was present at the event where the iconic song star, Onyeka Onwenu, performed a couple of her songs ending up with her famous song, ‘One Love Keep Us Together’.

“It was a beautiful performance, but little did we know it would be her final bow. Just about a few minutes after her performance, she sat down and drank some water and immediately collapsed, and was rushed to the hospital. I followed her to the hospital, I watched in pain as the doctors and medical staff fought tirelessly and battled to save her life doing everything possible to bring her back to life but eventually came out with the sad news that she was gone.

“No South East State Subscribes To Protest”, Says Uzodimma

Hope Uzodimma- Governor of Imo State

The Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma has said that no state in the South East subscribed to the planned protest, hence the need for Imo indigenes and residents to ignore the call and go about their normal businesses.

“No South East State has yet enlisted in the application of States going for protest,” he said.

The Governor made the clarification at the Landmarks Event Centre in Owerri on Wednesday when he addressed the gathering of Imo Stakeholders, comprising the youths, traditional rulers, faith groups and political Party leaders, Labour leaders, market men and women, academics among others on the State of the Nation, and the need to continue in the struggle for a peaceful and united Imo State in particular and Nigeria in general.

Governor Uzodimma reminded the stakeholders that the political struggle for leadership in Imo State ought to have been a  settled matter by now, going by the outcome of the last election, but regretted that those who lost in the last election have refused to tow the line of democracy “because they think if it is not them, there will not be government.”

He  bemoaned the resurgence of blood letting of innocent souls which he said is not acceptable by “God and even Satan,” emphasising that the “principles of democracy demand that you wait for the next election to make changes as the killing of human beings is not the culture of an Igbo man and should not be allowed.”

He enumerated the steps taken by the Federal Government to cushion the effects of the current temporary hardships such as distribution of palliatives, the sell of crude oil in Naira to owners of refineries operating in the country, the approval of funds for the most vulnerable in our society among others.

Other strategy already in place is the release of one trailer load of rice per Local Government in Imo State and 10 trailer loads of fertilizer for farmers in the State as palliatives in the short run.

Governor Uzodimma explained that through strategic partnership with the Federal government, he has garnered a lot of support just as he has continued to enjoy the goodwill of Imo people based on his performance in the last four and half years in office.

He charged the stakeholders to speak to the consciences of their brothers and sisters not to be used by enemies of progress to cause mayhem and distrort the developmental trajectory and policies of the State.

“All over the world, democracy is the best form of Government where, if you don’t like the present leadership, you wait for the next election and approach the ballot box and change the leadership,” he said and urged criminals and kidnappers to allow our people to go to farm so that we can have food on our table.

The Governor noted that “what Imo State people need today is permanent electricity supply, accessible good roads, hospitals and schools,” noting that “in the absence of these,  Imo State doesn’t have an economy.”

He insisted that a conducive environment  will spike the entrepreneurial spirit of the Igbo man, hence the need for steady power supply cannot be toyed with.

On this note, he thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for granting Imo State an energy and economic free trade zone at the Orashi area of the State, informing that the dredging of the Orashi river to the Atlantic will properly start by September with the  conclusion of the hydrographic survey.

He said the multiplier effect of all the efforts from his economic revival policies will be the creation of over 15,000 jobs when they are in place.

Again, the Governor assured that by the first quarter of 2025 Orashi Electricity will be fully in operation and that Imo State will be better for it in terms of electricity generation.

“We need to think good for our place and people, and if the environment is attractive those abroad will come back.”

On the scheduled Local Government Election in Imo State in September, the Governor said: “I am not going to influence the Local Government Election, it will be transparent.

We must go by the rules and ensure that credible people that will serve the people are elected.”

He advised those angling for positions as either Chairman or Councilor to go to their people and sell themselves since they will be accountable to the people at the end of the day.

The Governor hinted that the State has been directed by the Federal Government to collect names of 400 persons per Electoral Ward who will be receiving N50,000 per month to cushion their hardship, indicating that the LGA Chairmen will work with opinion moulders in their area to articulate the names of the those who really deserve to receive the money.

The Governor asked the stakeholders to go home and tell their people that “we don’t need crisis.”

He challenged Community leaders to find out what is happening in their area, what is happening in their farm and to the farmers and make arrangement to protect the farmers.

He canvassed for a better collaboration between the traditional rulers and the President Generals, the Communities and the Local Governments, the State and the Federal Government, as doing so will foster  peace, unity, progress, growth and development for the good of the citizens.

He encouraged traditional rulers and Town Union and President Generals to put additional efforts to “stop quarrels and keep the peace by reconciling, showing love, making sacrifices and serving your people.”

The Governor assured that between now and January 2025, the State will revive some of the old industries founded by late Governor Sam Mbakwe, citing the Concord Hotel as one of them.

He also hinted that the government is set to revoke all industrial plots not developed at the Imo State Industrial Layout by those who acquired them after 50 years of allocation.

Present at the programme were the Speaker and members of Imo State House of Assembly, the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Cosmas Iwu, the Chief of Staff, Barr. Nnamdi Anyaehie and members of the State’s Expanded Executive Council.

Others were Senators and members of the Federal House of Representatives, the Chairman of Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRH Eze Emmanuel Okeke and his colleagues from the State, captains of industries, and many others.

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

For the second time, the Abia State Government has postponed the commencement date for the enforcement of its restriction order on  tricyclists and motorcyclists  in the State .

The restriction of operations billed to start on August 1 2024 has been put on hold ,according to a statement issued on Wednesday July 31,by the  Commissioner for Information ,Prince Okey Kalu.

The Source reports that the State Authorities had, in June, imposed a 6.00am to 7.00pm operational time on tricyclists operating in Abia major cities ,particularly Aba, the commercial centre and Umuahia the state capital.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs ,Prince Uzo Nwachukwu, who  announced the development, said  intelligence at the disposal of the Government strongly suggested that most criminal activities in the state are being perpetrated with the aid of tricycles and motorcycles.

He noted that there have been  an upsurge in criminal activities in Aba and Umuahia with most of them carried out within the early and late hours of the day.

Prince Nwachukwu also stated  that the criminal elements usually operate with tricycles ,hence the need for the restriction order .

It had initially set July 1,2024 as the enforcement date .

But it later ,shifted the date to August 1 ,citing pleas from well meaning Abians as major reason.

The Government also said the postponement was to enable operators and other commercial automobile operators in the state to conclude their  registration formalities, which is part of the restriction order .

The suspension of the August 1 date, the Commissioner for Information said was occasioned by the August 1 nation wide protest ..

” The Abia state Government wishes to inform the public that the planned enforcement of restriction of the operations Tricycles (keke) and Motorcycles (okada) between the hours 7pm and  6 am billed to commence on 1st August ,2024 has been put on hold .

“This is sequel to the security realities and mood of the nation occasioned by the impending “Hunger and Hardship protest” that has been scheduled to start on the same 1st August ,2024 .

“The decision of the State Government to push forward the date for the commencement of the enforcement of the restriction policy underscores the administration’s stance of giving a human face to governance and policy implementation .

“It further confirms the fact the people at all times, are the centerpiece of all Government policy actions .

“While the enumeration and registration of all commercial vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles in the transport sector in Abia state continues as scheduled ,the Government will announce a new date for the formal commencement of the restriction policy” the statement reads .

The International Press Centre, (IPC) has tasked journalists that will be on duty during the nationwide protest to adopt safety measures in course of their assignment.

The statement, signed by Melody Akinjiyan, stated that “In view of the planned nation-wide protests scheduled to commence on Thursday, August 1, 2024, the International Press Centre, Lagos-Nigeria has tasked journalists and other media professionals who may be on duty to adopt necessary safety measures to avoid attacks.

“The protests, which according to the organisers, is scheduled to hold across the thirty-six (36) states of the country and the FCT, August 1 – 10, 2024, is aimed at pushing for a transformative change, demanding a more equitable society with effective leadership, affordable food, zero hunger and a reduced cost of living.

“The Executive Director of IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade said the admonition to journalists has become necessary in the light of previous experiences when journalists were assaulted in the course of legitimate duty.

“We urge all journalists and media practitioners who will be on the field to cover the anticipated nation-wide protests to adopt and implement safety measures while carrying out their activities professionally.

“Journalists who are to cover the protests should ensure that they are fully kitted and have their identification card clearly displayed in order to avoid situations wherein security agencies may mistake them as protesters and avoid a situation that would make the security agencies to question them, unduly harass, or bar them from performing their duties.”

He also enjoined other stakeholders, especially the security agencies to undertake the performance of their tasks in a civil and responsible manner.

“The security forces should note that the media plays a critical role in the information dissemination chain and are obligated to professionally carry out their task in reporting societal events, hence they be accorded due rights and privileges to enable them carry out their social obligations.

“The media should be seen as partners in progress and not as adversaries.”

“It should be noted that IPC, during the 2023 general elections launched a safety and professional advisory for the purpose of ensuring journalists who are covering events and discharging their duties are fully equipped with safety tools and precautions to engage with while on the field.

“This safety advisory regarding the proposed protest is therefore in line with IPC’s mandate to engender the safety of journalists under the IPC Safety Of Journalists Initiative.”

The identities of some of the progenitors of the August 1 nationwide protest in the North became clearer on Wednesday July 31.

In a statement jointly issued , Professor Usman,Yusuf ,former APC North-west Chairman, Salihu Lukman ,Najiatu  Mohammed, an activist, Dr Umar Ardo and others threw their full weight behind the protest.

They said going by the unprecedented  security challenges ,excruciating poverty ,unemployment, and rising cost of living in the country, the protest has become imperative.

They collectively blamed the situation on bad governance and unmitigated corruption by public officials.

“We acknowledge that the primary purpose of any Government is to secure lives and property and enhance the welfare of its citizens.

“Any regime that cannot guarantee these basic rights loses all legal and moral authority of being in power, and would naturally incur the wrath of citizens .

“It can, therefore, only remain in office ,more by default than by public consent. This seems to be the state our dear country ,Nigeria is drifting towards .

“Over the years ,successive Governments at all levels ,including the incumbent one ,fell short of delivering the requisite leadership.

“Consequently, Nigerians have been thrown into a state of social dislocation that has plunged citizens especially the youths into disillusionment ,disappointment, frustrations, and hopelessness.

“To press home their legitimate demands concerning the cost of living crisis,:insecurity and the worrisome drift in the ship of state ,Nigerian youths have resolved to go on a 10-day nationwide protest from the 1st of August, 2024.

“We, therefore, wrote this special text to state our position concerning this resolve to protest and the attitude of the Government to it.

“First, we want to affirm the constitutionally protected right of all citizens to assemble and to protest .We also acknowledge that the cause of the protest against the system is valid and justifiable.

“We wish to state clearly that we stand by our youths in their resolve to exercise their right to protest..

“Secondly,we call on the Federal Government to be pragmatic in its approach to the resolution of the crisis if if hopes to amicably resolve and mitigate the risks associated with mass protests .

“To this end ,we recommend that the Government engage in dialogue . Identify and directly engage with the youth leaders and protesters to understand and address their grievances ” part of the statement reads.

The Northern stakeholders condemned the present situation  where the Government has left traditional ,religious ,labour leaders and civil society groups with the  job of calming frayed nerves .

Similarly, it warned that any attempt to use force ,intimidation and harassment to handle the fragile situation will be counterproductive..

Rather, it called on the Government to urgently embark on reforms with a view to addressing the issues that have been raised by the protesters.

“We Will Fish You Out Either Dead Or Alive”- Police Vows Amidst Renewed Attacks In Imo State By Gunmen

Aboki Danjuma - Imo Commissioner of Police
Aboki Danjuma, Imo state Commissioner of Police

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

An embarrassed Imo State Police Command has stated that some hoodlums and criminal elements have resorted to waging a guerilla war on the State.

It has been bad in Imo State in the past two days as gunmen run wild, even within the Owerri State Capital.

Reports indicate that the situation has been anything but good as gunmen prowl the roads and streets from Orji, Egbu, the Shoprite areas, all in Owerri North.

Owerri West was not spared either as gunmen attacked and killed four Policemen and a civilian in one fell swoop at Irete on Tuesday.

Panic-gripped Imo residents are sending out text messages warning people to stay indoors. There is confusion and people are asking: Where are the Police and other Security Agencies?

These attacks came on the heels of assurances to the people by the Imo State Police  Command that it was in full charge.

However, in the face of the attacks, the Police has assured again that it will deal with the miscreants responsible for the attacks and killing of security operatives ,as well as innocent members of the public .

With less than two days after mauling down four police personnel and a civilian, some suspected   armed members of the   Autopilots faction of Simon Ekpa’s Indigenous peoples of Biafra IPOB ,on Wednesday July 31, held parts parts of Owerri captive.

Residents of Owerri/Okigwe road ,Douglas Road ,Aba road and Imo State University junction all in the capital city were confined to their residences as a result of heavy attacks on the areas by the gunmen .

Others on routine business activities were forced to abandon them and ran for their lives amidst  the sporadic exchange of gun fire between the attackers and Security Operatives.

In a brazen show of audacity, the gunmen, also, attempted to invade the Owerri Correctional Centre, but were resisted by Security Operatives.

The Imo Police Command Spokesperson, Henry Okoye, while speaking, blamed the ugly development on IPOB.

He described the  gunmen as pure cowards who have decided to operate under cover to unleash mayhem on innocent people.

“They are pure cowards. The criminals are suspected to be members of the proscribed IPOB and Eastern Security Network ESN who have adopted a guerilla strategy whereby they come out from their enclaves, unleash a surprise attack and go back into hiding” he noted

He has, however, promised that all efforts are being made to track the attackers down by security agencies

“The Commissioner of Police has personally led men to the scene. The Command is on top of the situation.

“We will get the miscreants responsible for these senseless attacks either dead or alive,” the police vowed.

The Source reports that the ongoing attacks particularly on vulnerable spots may not be unconnected with the activities of enforcers of the one week sit-at-order earlier proclaimed by Simon Ekpa group on the Southeast region .

The Finland-based leader of the IPOB faction had  billed the sit-at-home for between Monday July 29 and Saturday August 3 2024 .
