The protesters were armed with placards with different inscriptions such as “revert petrol price to pre-May 2023”, “end bad governance” “palliatives cannot save us”, “cut salaries of political office holders”, among others.

The Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) in Osun State has exonerated Governor Ademola Adeleke over claim by the All Progressives Congress, (APC)  that Governor Ademola Adeleke is fraternizing with EndBadGovernance protesters to embarrass the federal government under President Bola Tinubu.

The PDP in a statement by Sunday Bisi, its Chairman stated that the issue is a sensitive one and should be used to play politics.

Bisi added “We understand the fact that Osun APC chairman, Tajudeen Lawal and his lifeless advisers are too idle to be wise, but it is essential that their mental pluggings are not sent on sabbatical while making public comments on sensitive matters of wellbeing and security especially.

“Nigerians are not animals and the nation is not premised solely on the jungle system of force as APC is used to.

“A responsible government will not sit back and refuse to engage its people for constructive deliberations when confronted with valid agitations. It is the global best standard in crisis management and not the Apc option of ‘Kill and Go”.

“As a party, we commend the state Governor for his proactive and matured handling of the issues bordering on the planned protest, which essentially was aimed at safeguarding the people of Osun State.

“We also commend the state government under Governor Ademola Adeleke for his transparency in handling and distribution of palliative items accrued to the state so far, the latest of which was explicitly made public by the ministry of information some days ago.

“We specially commend his Excellency for ensuring prompt payment of charges on the said palliatives, which amounted to several millions of naira in order to access the food items for the downtrodden in the state.”

The ruling Party also explained the issues of funds raised by the opposition, revealing what the government of Adeleke is doing with it.

“The state government has not only distributed the food items transparently but had also effected cash awards to the state workforce and pensioners alike, running well over N2 billion now admitted by the APC, after rigmaroling around several unfounded figures.

“We stand in confidence that the state Governor, Asiwaju Ademola Adeleke will continue to discharge his duties conscientiously, in line with the human face pact signed with the people of Osun State.”

Dear Lagosians,

Today, I stand before you deeply committed to the well-being and prosperity of our great state.

Lagos has always been a beacon of hope and resilience, reflecting the brilliance and energy of our diverse cultures.

For weeks, we’ve faced the prospect of protests aimed at ending what some call “bad government.” While the intentions may be noble, some narratives suggesting it’s a means to change the government by non-constitutional means are troubling.

Is a protest the catalyst for progress we need now? Will it ensure our challenges vanish in ten days? Will it lower food prices or inspire economic growth? I strongly believe it won’t. Instead, it could undo the modest gains we’ve made.

Are there challenges? Yes. Is the government addressing them? Absolutely. Significant efforts are underway across many sectors to alleviate our people’s pain and pave the way to lasting prosperity.

This week, President Tinubu signed a new minimum wage into law. Student loans are being disbursed to ease financial burdens, and local governments now have financial autonomy to enhance governance efficiency.

The foreign exchange crisis is being creatively tackled. The sale of crude oil to local refineries in Naira will save $7.9 billion annually and strengthen our currency. The Presidential Initiative on CNG is also attracting private investments.

We need patience for the benefits of these economic reforms to blossom. Protests can’t achieve in days what economic reforms can in weeks and months. Our nation, under President Tinubu’s courageous leadership, is on the right path.

In Lagos, we launched EKOCARES to cushion the effects of economic reforms. From discount markets to reduced transport costs, and free medical care, we are committed to easing the burdens on our people.

We’ve increased bursaries and scholarships for Lagos students, ensured free education for new elementary students, and our workers earn above the national minimum wage.

We can do more, and we will.

Reflecting on the tragic events of the EndSARS protest in 2020, it began peacefully but was later hijacked, resulting in immense destruction and loss.

We will NOT allow history repeat itself. During the protests, we saw the destruction of valuable properties and institutions: Lagos High Court, 45 police stations, 12 Local Government offices, 7 Fire Stations, and the Forensic Centre, among others.

The City Hall, Nigeria Ports Authority headquarters, and traditional rulers’ palaces were also destroyed.

Malls, shops, offices, and hundreds of brand-new BRT buses were lost. Such devastation only sets us back economically and socially.

Our goal is a peaceful and prosperous Lagos. We must avoid economic destabilization that can make us poorer. Let’s unite, embrace dialogue, and build a peaceful, prosperous Lagos.

To ensure safe and peaceful expression, the Police have designated Gani Fawehinmi Park and Peace Park for protests. These locations will be secured to protect our citizens and prevent chaos.

Let’s work together to build a Lagos that is safe, secure, and prosperous for all. Our strength lies in our unity, and our future depends on maintaining peace and stability.

God bless Lagos State.

University Students To Pay N80k For Electricity

Nigeria university students may be made to pay N80,000 for electricity as part of their tuition, according to university Vice Chancellors.

The Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian, CCCNU, made this known through their Secretary General, Prof. Yakubu Ochefu.

Prof. Ochefu to the Punch that universities in the country have decided to charge the amount from students to defray the rising cost of electricity in the nation’s ivory towers.

According to him, following the increase in electricity tariff by the Nigerian Electricity Regulation Commission, NERC, universities now pay as much as N200 million  monthly as electricity cost, which he said has become unsustainable for the universities.

From barely N1 billion yearly, Ochefu disclosed that the combined cost of electricity for universities in the country has risen to N4 billion following the hike in tariff by the NERC, adding that the Association has already written a letter to the federal government for its intervention.

He said the cost need to be reversed failure which the university authorities will have to compel students to pay N8,000 to reduce the burden on the university management.

Ochefu said, “Before the new tariff, universities were paying around N1bn annually, but now the cost has risen to N4bn per annum. How are they supposed to find such funds? How much is being allocated to universities for their overhead budgets?

“If the FG doesn’t step in to rescue the universities, the costs will be transferred to students as user charges, amounting to N80,000 per student. Alternatively, universities will have to limit their operations to four hours a day.

“For example, UNIBEN is currently running a generator for four hours daily, which costs them N60m a month. This is unsustainable given the need for a functioning library, internet access, and laboratory facilities.

“The charges presented before us are unrealistic. Universities can’t afford to pay N200m or N300m monthly for electricity. The Federal Government needs to reconsider this decision. We have written to the President, requesting a concessionary rate or a return to the previous rate based on the funding provided by the FG to universities. There has been no response yet. We wrote the letter when the policy was first announced.

“The matter is now in the hands of the pro-chancellors, as it is a critical funding issue. The Vice-Chancellors have done their part.”

The magazine had reported that the NERC hiked electricity tariff by over 300 percent in April for Band A customers’ category which universities in the country belong, and has refused to reverse the increase despite the directive from the National Assembly to that effect.

#EndBadGovernance: Rights Activist, Bolaji Akinyemi, Alleges Plot To Attack Igbos, Calls For Sit-At-Home

Dr. Bolaji Akinyemi,  human rights activist and the convener of Apostolic Roundtable,  has raised an alarm over a purported plot to attack non-Yoruba resident in Lagos especially the Igbos during the  nationwide protests against hunger.

This was as he called on ‘strangers’ in the nation’s economic capital, Lagos, to stage a sit-at-home disposition in the course of the protest, saying there was a premonition that some hired thugs were out to unleash mayhem on the innocent non-speaking Yoruba Nigerians in the Lagos.

According to him, the precarious situation the country currently finds itself was a consequence of the undue quest for one man to grab power by all means with the, “Emilokan” mantra.

The Yoruba clergy spoke in a statement he issued in Enugu, on Wednesday night, saying, “In the reality of the life of the biggest nation on the continent is how a lion adopted the character of a tortoise and initiated emilokan dance, sold it as awa lokan, to his tribe.”

The statement reads in part, “Yet, “Oro” voices are heard from their grottoes forbidding the youth from protesting and then threatening strangers in, “a o merin joba land”.

“Cracks in the wall of the nation are ignored, consequently the crumbling of the structure that may bury all alive.

“Restructuring of our federation vis-a-vis the suspension of the 1963 CFRN and incorporating the 2014 Conference reviews was a stitch meant for yesterday to save today; but it was ignored! The tears in our garments as widened. Would a stitch in time, of “#EndBadGovernance” cry save nine?”

He further averred that President Tinubu would have avoided the crises bedeviling the country if he acted faster on marrying the 1963 Constitution and implementing the recommendations of the 2014 Constitution Review Conference convened by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

It added, “Will the BAT of mystery and mischief reach for the needle and the thread to knit the 1963 constitution with 2014 Conference to give Nigeria a new life. The government is not what the youths are demanding to end, rather bad governance.

“If “#EndBadGovernance” is successfully suppressed, “end bad Government” may be an inevitable consequence of the docility of government to end the bad, for the good.

“Intelligences on this proposed protest is damming. From the streets, I glean the determination of the ewe ku ewele tribe to work with the tribe up the northern river to torment the Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo tribe.

“Save lives by giving Nigeria, not our wicked leader, this last chance to survive. May I appeal to all friends of the leader to please tell him to end bad governance!

“A sit-at-home protest is my recommendation to all parents and youths alike. With a “sit-at-home” protest, we are bound to have the same result.”

Insecurity In Imo: “There Was No Attack/Invasion Of Owerri Correctional Centre, IMSU Hostel” – Police

Aboki Danjuma - Imo Commissioner of Police
Aboki Danjuma, Imo state Commissioner of Police

By Charles Igbo

The Imo State Police Command has dismissed as fake and nauseating the story in some sections of the Social Media that gunmen attacked the Owerri Correctional Centre on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.

The Command, also, put a lie to another story which made the rounds that Security Agents invaded a students’ Hostel at the Imo State University to warn the students not to join the Nationwide protest by, mostly, youths against excruciating hunger in the land.

A statement signed by the Command’s Spokesperson, ASP Henry Okoye said an attack on the Correctional Centre could not have been possible as there is a massive deployment of Security Agents in all “nooks and crannies” including the Correctional Center.

He said those spreading such fake rumours are only out to spread fears among Imo citizens and revealed that one of them has been arrested by the Police.

He, however, admitted that there have been attacks in some areas in the State which he attributed to the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, and its Militant wing, the Eastern Security Network, ESN.

But Simon Ekpa, the Finland-based Head of a breakaway faction of IPOB has since claimed responsibility for the killings in the State, specifically, the killing of four Policemen in Irete a couple of days ago. A viral video showed off four guns collected from the neutralised Policemen.

The Police Command, in an earlier statement, swore to get the perpetrators of the killings in  the State dead or alive.

Following is the full text of the Wednesday statement which denied the attack on Owerri Prisons by gunmen, and/or the invasion of the Imo State University Hostel by Security Agents.

ATTACK ON IMO CORRECTIONAL CENTER FALSE, MISLEADING MALICIOUS, AND HANDIWORK OF MISCHIEF MAKER’S

“The Imo State Police Command is issuing this statement in response to a publication making the rounds on social media that the Correctional Service Custodial Center, Owerri was attacked by gunmen today, 31/07/2024.

“The Command wishes to state clearly that the said publication is entirely false, misleading, and malicious. The publication is a calculated attempt by mischief makers to create unnecessary fear and anxiety in the minds of the people of Imo State.

“We wish to inform Imo people that the operatives of the entire security agencies have been massively deployed to all the nooks and crannies of the state including the correctional center to evade any threat of attack.

“In the same vein, the command wishes to debunk another trending video suggesting that security operatives invaded a hostel at Imo State University, warning the students to stay off the planned nationwide demonstration.

“A thorough investigation of the video revealed that nothing of such happened in either the IMSU hostel or anywhere in the state. The Command is committed to protecting the rights of peaceful protesters but however, warned against any violent demonstration that could lead to destruction of lives and properties in the state.

“Consequently, a thorough investigation has been initiated to apprehend the purveyor of the misleading publication cum video as one suspect has been arrested.

“We are also aware of the recent pocket of attacks in some places in the state orchestrated by suspected members of IPOB/ESN, however, the Command in synergy with other security agencies is working harmoniously to apprehend the hoodlums responsible for the attacks and normalcy has been restored.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma therefore called on the general public to disregard the misleading information and urged them to remain security conscious and report any suspicious activity via the Command’s emergency lines 08034773600 or 08148024755.

“CP Aboki Danjuma appeals to Ndi Imo that through collaborative efforts and partnership, a safer and more prosperous Imo State will be achieved.

“ASP HENRY OKOYE, ANIPR

IMO STATE COMMAND.”
