An Independent Commission of Inquiry to investigate killings and other acts of violence linked to Osun state’s election period, will be inaugurated on Monday by Governor, Ademola Adeleke.

The Governor announced the plan to establish the commission at a press conference on Friday, saying the commission would be constituted immediately after Saturday’s governorship election.

Series of killings and violence attacks have trailed the governorship election with casualties among members of the two leading parties, Accord and All Progressives Congress (APC).

Adeleke commiserated with the families of all those who lost their lives in election-related violence, stressing that every life lost was an Osun life, regardless of political affiliation.

“Politics should never cost anyone his or her life, irrespective of political affiliation,” he said.

According to the Governor, the commission will investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported killings and recommend appropriate measures to ensure that those responsible are held accountable, irrespective of their political affiliation, status or influence.

He also disclosed that the government would establish a framework to provide compensation for the families of victims.

Adeleke pointed out that the election would eventually end, but the people of Osun must remain united, stressing the need to ensure justice for the deceased, support for their families and a peaceful future for the state.
