Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday May 14, 2026, cast doubts over the possibility of Peter Obi honouring his one-term presidency pledge.

The Source reports that the former Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate in an interview with News Central on Thursday, reaffirmed his earlier promise to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.

According to the former Anambra State Governor, the pledge to serve one tenure is in deference to the unwritten power sharing formula between the Northern and Southern parts of the country.

With President Bola Tinubu already serving the first tenure  of the Southern two-term of eight years, Obi and his new political nest, the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, have assured of respecting the power rotation arrangement.

In a viral clip of the News Central Interview, Obi who alongside the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, penultimate Sunday,  joined forces with the NDC, insisted that he will only serve one tenure, even if a gun is pointed to his head.

“Even with a gun to my head, I will not remain in office more than four years”, Obi stated.

But in a statement issued on his official site on Thursday, Onanuga  dismissed Obi’s pledge of one term, noting that the assurance is not in tandem with what he called” the inconsistent political history of the former LP Presidential flag bearer.

According to him, Obi’s promise is not a true reflection of his  unstable political allegiances.

” If you believe Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term as President, you will believe anything.

“Peter Obi’s pledges have always been short-lived . He ultimately abandoned APGA for the PDP, and since then, he has drifted from one political platform to another – a political rolling stone.

“By his own words, Peter Obi has shown that his word cannot be trusted. His promises are as fleeting as his political allegiances”, the Presidential spokesperson added.
