Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s house at Ita-Eko, off Akin Olugbade, Abeokuta, Ogun State, was gutted by fire late Wednesday night, with properties worth millions of Naira, destroyed by the inferno.
There was pandemonium as residents, passerby, and youths tried to curtail the inferno that started around 10pm.
Eye witness reports said that the inferno occurred following a power surge.
Residents of the area and sympathizers trooped out to assist the domestic workers in the house to put out the fire.
The Ogun State Director of Fire Service, Fatai Adefala, confirming the incident said that the fire outbreak was caused by power surge, disclosing that the damage wasn’t all that severe.
Adefala, however, disclosed that the fire only razed a store and not the main building in the former president’s compound.
He stressed that if not for the swift response of his men, it could have been more disastrous.
“The officials of the agency swiftly responded to distress calls about 10:00 pm and succeeded in putting out the fire, that might have causes severe damage”, he concluded.
