Nigerian-born Adewale Adeyamo, popular as “Wally”, has made history.
He will be appointed as Deputy Secretary of Treasury by USA’s President-elect, Joe Biden.
Adeyamo’s position is in Nigeria, the equivalent of the Minister of State, Finance.
His appointment will be announced Tuesday, along with others, as Biden is set to unveil “a diverse economic team” to deal with the daunting challenges facing America’s economy.
It is not the first time “Wally” will be appointed to a high profile position in the US Government. But in the history of the USA, this is the highest office a Nigerian-American will be appointed to.
An Attorney, Adeyamo was a former Senior International Economic Adviser during the Barack Obama administration.
As the Deputy Treasury Secretary he will work under former Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen, who Biden has appointed as the first female Secretary of the Treasury Department.
According to reports, Biden’s new team, when officially in place, will be confronted with a struggling U.S. economy, the worst in several years.
