President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed that N18 billion be paid as outstanding severance benefits toformer workers ofthe defunct Nigerian Airways. No fewer than 2,700 former empoyees of the now defunct federal government owned airline will benefit from the largesse, according to information made available to the media.
According tothe Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister ofthe Economy, Taiwo Oyedele,who made the announcement to journalists in Abuja,the nation’s capital on Friday, the payment is coming more than 20years after the liquidation ofthe former airline.
Oyedele expressed reret that many of the airline workers had died in the last two decades while trying toget their retiremet benefits, but said the federal government will ensure that the families of those that have died were paidwhat belong to them.
He explained that President Tinubu is trying to ensure that the federal government fulfil its obligations tothe ex- workers ofthe defubct airline, adding that the payment will be done in batches, noting that 2,100, former employes have already received their severance benefits while the last two batches ,comprising 600 workers have been cleared to g t their payment soon.
Oyedele: “For more than two decades, following the liquidation of Nigeria Airways, many former employees have waited for their outstanding severance benefits. Some have grown old waiting. Some have sadly passed away, leaving their families to pursue what was legitimately due to them.
“We recognise that no payment today can fully compensate for more than two decades of waiting, but it is important that government confronts these long-standing obligations rather than allowing them to remain unresolved for another generation.”
