For the first time in the history of FIFA Women’s World Cup since its inception in 1991, the Super Falcons failed to make it to the world showpiece scheduled for Brazil in 2027.
The Nigerian Team lost Intercontinental Playoff Ticket to the Bayana Bayana of South Africa, losing 2-1 to their arch rivals.
The lackluster display of the Super Falcons was vivid as the South Africans dominated the entire match, dictating play and controlling possession.
After a shambolic display in the first half, with the Coach Justine Maduagu side struggling to create chances, the Banyana Banyana capitalized on a misplaced pass by Nigeria in the midfield, as Motlotho set up Kgatlana to give the South Africans the lead.
The Banyana Banyana made it 2-0 courtesy of Captain, Refiloe Jane, whose effort was deflected by Christy Ucheibe.
The Super Falcons were given a lifeline, as Jane handled the ball in the 18 Yard Box, leading to a penalty amd a red Card against the South Africans.
The resultant penalty kick was converted by Ucheibe.
A last gasp save from South African goalkeeper, Kaylian Swart from a Michelle Alozie strike gave the South Africans the much needed victory.
