Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, the son of the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has been named the running mate to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, gubernatorial candidate for Kano state, Comrade Aminu Abdulssalam Gwarzo for the 2027 general elections.

While the NDC Governorship flag bearer Gwarzo was the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano between 2023 and early 2026, Mustapha, t biological son of Kwankwaso, served as Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf’s immediate past Commissioner for Youths and Sports.

The emergence of the younger Kwankwaso as the Deputy Governorship candidate was contained in a statement on Monday, June 15, 2026, from Habib Saleh Mohammed, the Kwankwasiyya Movement spokesperson.

“HE Aminu Abdulssalam Gwarzo unveils Hon Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso as running mate for 2027 Governorship election”, the Kwankwasiyya spokesperson stated.

Both Mustapha and his principal resigned their positions in the Governor Yusuf’s administration following the political realignment processes that swept through Kano state a couple of months ago.

Their resignation followed their refusal to join Governor Yusuf in defecting from their original political platform, the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, to the All Progressive Congress, APC.

Interestingly, both will equally be squaring up with their former principal, for the 2027 gubernatorial race in the State.

Mustapha’s father, Kwankwaso has already emerged as the running mate to Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the NDC.
