Ahead the November election 11 governorship election in three states, the United Kingdom, UK, has warned its citizens not to travel to such states.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has fixed the off-season governorship election in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa states as fears over violence breaking out looms.
Security agencies in the country say they are on top of the situation.
In spite of the assurance, the UK government said in an advisory that it cannot guarantee the safety of any citizen who traveled to the mentioned states.
Apart from the three states where governorship elections are taking place, the UK, in the advisory issued by the Commonwealth Office at the weekend, also mentioned 11 other states which it described as possible flashpoints of violence.
The states are Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, and the riverine areas of Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states.
Apart from avoiding traveling to these state, the UK also urged it’s citizens to “avoid large gatherings and crowded public places. Travelers should also register with their nearest embassy or consulate so that they can be contacted in case of an emergency.”
The UK warning comes few days after the United States, US, warned its citizens to avoid hotels in Abuja, Nigeria’s major cities for security reasons.
The advisory issued on November 3, said “The U.S. government is aware of credible information that there is an elevated threat to major hotels in Nigeria’s larger cities. Nigerian security services are working diligently to counter the threat.”
The US government had directed it’s citizens to consult its Embassy in Abuja and Consolate in Lagos in case they need assistance.
