Governor Soludo Pardons Convicted Anambra Native Doctor, ‘Akwa Okuko’

“After God na Government. I thank Governor Soludo for pardoning me”.

Those were the words of controversial Anambra State native doctor, Chidozie Nwangwu, popular as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, after regaining freedom.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra had magnanimously pardoned Akwa Okuko, who was sentenced to 11 months in prison by an Awka High Court in February 2026. He had pleaded guilty to multiple charges linked to “Oke ite” and other related offences.

Recall that the Court had also ordered the demolition of his shrine in Oba and directed him to publicly renounce the practice after his release.

When he was sentenced to prison by the Court, several persons, including youths, had pleaded on his behalf, but Governor Soludo  said he could consider granting Akwa Okuko a pardon after the Court process was concluded. 

Not rescinding on the promise made to Oba youths, the Governor ordered his release. To cap it, Soludo also appointed him an Ambassador for Youths! Then, he and Soludo, walked out from one of offices in the prison, holding hands, with the convict looking very chubby and holding and smiling like he won a million-dollar lottery.

Since his release, the social media has been on fire with  comments and reactions from netizens. 

While some lauded Governor Soludo for not reneging on his promise, others  made jokes of the release of the native doctor, linking the development to Soludo’s administration’s strides.
