A fresh governorship primary election of the Social Democratic Party, (SDP) in Nasarawa state has been won by former Inspector-General of Police, (IGP) Mohammed Abubakar Adamu.
Adamu was declared the party’s flagbearer on Saturday in Lafia after winning a substitution primary conducted across the state’s 13 local government areas.
His emergence followed the withdrawal of the party’s earlier nominee, Musa Adamu Angba, whose name had already been submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC).
Chairman of the SDP Electoral Committee for Nasarawa State, Joseph Achille, said 28,637 delegates participated in the exercise, with votes cast at ward level and duly collated.
According to him, Adamu was the sole candidate and secured all valid votes cast.
“Sitting before you today to conduct this election. As you are all aware, we have a sole candidate for the office of governor, SDP, Nasarawa State,” Achille told delegates.
He subsequently declared: “Having scored the total votes peacefully and lawfully, it gives me singular privilege, by the powers conferred on me by the National Executive Committee and the National Working Committee, to declare the result that Mohammed Abubakar Adamu scored the highest lawful valid votes.
“Subsequently, he is declared, returned, and elected as the candidate and flag-bearer of the Social Democratic Party for Nasarawa State.”
Achille described the process as free, fair and credible before inviting Adamu to deliver his acceptance speech.
The former IGP thanked the party and delegates for the confidence reposed in him, saying the outcome was a win for his family and the people of the state.
“I am delighted that the primaries have been conducted. I’m also delighted that we have been declared the winner. My family and the people of Nasarawa State are delighted that this primary has been conducted, and we have been declared winners,” Adamu said.
He pledged to work toward improving security, governance and service delivery in the state if elected in 2027.
Otaru Douglas, Director of Media and Strategic Communications of the Adamu Campaign Organisation, said the primary has put to rest weeks of speculation over the SDP ticket in Nasarawa.
In a statement issued after the exercise, Douglas said the turnout and unanimous support demonstrated the unity of the party.
“The people have shown uncommon resilience and commitment to changing the governance narrative of our dear state. They have rejected politics of intimidation and inducement and have chosen competence, experience, integrity and proven leadership,” he said.
With Adamu now confirmed as SDP’s candidate, the party will be banking on his national profile and security background to challenge the ruling APC and other opposition parties in 2027.
Adamu, who served as Nigeria’s 20th Inspector-General of Police between 2019 and 2021, hails from Nasarawa State and is expected to formally unveil his campaign structure and manifesto in the coming weeks.
