Relief is underway for road users as President Bola Tinubu ordered the immediate restoration of movement for motorists and commuters facing severe hardship on highways.
To this end, the Federal Government has launched an emergency intervention on some of Nigeria’s most troubled road corridors.
Some lawyers traveling to Rivers state for NBA conference and other travelers had got stucked in a traffic for two days along Oghara–Sapele Road in Delta State, due to an obstruction caused by two trucks.
Also in Ekiti, there has been a long traffic gridlock along Ifaki- Ikole highway since Friday following deplorable condition of the road.
The directive has prompted the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, to mobilise emergency teams to the Benin-Agbor-Asaba road and the Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti corridor, where worsening road conditions have reportedly left motorists stranded for hours and, in some cases, days.
Francis Nwaze, Senior Special Assistant to the Minister, (Media) said in a statement on Tuesday that Umahi confirmed that President Tinubu had directed the Ministry of Works to take urgent corrective action to restore movement as quickly as possible.
“President Tinubu, has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene and ensure that necessary corrective actions are taken to restore movement on the affected roads as quickly as possible,” Umahi said.
“In response to the presidential directive, the Minister has activated an emergency response plan, directing the Minister of State for Works to lead ministry officials to the Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti axis to assess the situation and commence immediate remedial works.
“As of 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, ministry officials were already on the ground in Ekiti and Kogi States to begin the intervention. But the Benin-Agbor-Asaba corridor has also received urgent attention.
“Umahi personally travelled to Benin, Edo State, alongside members of the National Assembly Works Committee to begin a coordinated response to the crisis on the strategic road linking Edo and Delta States.
“The meeting is expected to involve representatives of the Edo and Delta State Governments, as well as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), in a bid to find immediate solutions to the worsening situation.”
The Works Minister also accepted responsibility for the situation and apologised to commuters who have suffered prolonged delays and been stranded on the affected routes.
He assured Nigerians that the government’s intervention would not stop at temporary relief.
According to him, emergency measures are being pursued alongside permanent solutions aimed at restoring the roads and improving their long-term reliability.
