Eight Zamfara Law Makers Flee State; Allege Threat To Lives By Security Operatives, Thugs

The suspended eight Members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have fled the State ,citing alleged threats to their lives and harassment by Security Operatives as reasons.

The Source reports that on February 27 ,2024 the leadership of the Zamfara state legislative body suspended the embattled eight Lawmakers for allegedly running foul of the provisions of Order 10, Rule 9 of the House.

The suspended members   who  addressed the Media on Sunday March 17  from their new base in Zaria,  Kaduna State, appealed to the National Assembly to, as a matter of urgency, intervene and save them from harassment from both political thugs and Security Operatives, adding that they were forced to go into hiding by threats to their lives.

Hon. Bashir Aliu, leader of the suspended Assembly Members ,stated that their only offence was their insistence on the adoption of pragmatic approach to combating the spate of insecurities ravaging the State, by both the Executive arm and the Leadership of Legislative body.

He alleged that amidst the serious security challenges, facing the State ,the Assembly was not only rudderless, but the Speaker and his Deputy absconded ,adding that their quest for an effective response to the security challenges was their only known offence.

Hon. Aliu, representing Gummi State Constituency, lamented that since their unjust suspension, political thugs and security operatives have been unleashed on them ,with the intent to arrest, detain and or  maim them.

“The way things are now in Zamfara State, democracy is in real danger . And with the worsening security situation ,we are appealing to the National Assembly to wade in and  save our lives and democracy.

“One of our members was recently chased away by hired thugs at a wedding ceremony, and he had to run for his dear life.

“Besides, most of us, our houses are under constant and close security surveillance for possible arrests.

“On March 7, the harassment was taken to a higher  level with the Leadership of the House  asking us to return our official vehicles to the Assembly Clerk.” Hon Aliu stated.
