The announcement on Tuesday by the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos of the death of Very Rev’d Monsignor Gabriel Osu has thrown the Nigerian Catholic Community into mourning.
In a statement, the Diocese disclosed that the Osu, a native of Ubulu-Uku, Delta State, died on Friday, May 8, 2026. He was aged 72 years.
Until his death, Monsignor Osu was a priest of the Archdiocese of Lagos.
He was ordained on Saturday, December 5, 1981, and served in several parishes and institutions in the Archdiocese. They include The Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos; St. Gregory College, South-West, Ikoyi; St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Oshodi, Lagos; St. Paul Catholic Church, Ebute-Metta, and Our Lady Star of the Sea, Northern Foreshore, Lekki.
He also served as the Lagos Archdiocesan Director of Social Communications for many years, in which position he often interacted with the media and was the face of the Diocese in media matters. Until his death, he was a resident of Our Lady Star of the Sea, Northern Foreshore, Lekki.
The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, in a circular, said that Osu’s funeral arrangements would be made public later.
