With a score of 54.8%, and still counting, Olumide Akpata, on Thursday, emerged the new President of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA. Voting will end by 11.00pm Thursday.
He defeated two other candidates, Babatunde Ajibade, and Julius Adesina, both Senior Advocates of Nigeria, SAN to emerge winner. At the time of writing this, about 29,636 members had cast their votes online, after being accredited electronically.
Akpata’s emergence is a victory for young lawyers who, this magazine gathered, rooted for him, and backed him all the way.
In over 30 years, this will be the first time a non SAN, will lead the NBA.
The late Alao Aka-Bashorun was the the other non-SAN. He was the NBA President from 1987 – 1989, and gave hell to the Military Regime of President Ibrahim Babangida.
