The Controller-General of Customs, Hamid Ali, has said that the border closure is a win-win situation for Nigeria, adding that the hard times being experienced in the country has been with Nigerians, and is not caused by the closure.

Describing the allegation that the closure is responsible for sufferings and poverty as unfounded, he said that farmers are finding it difficult to meet the demands of consumers since the closure.

Speaking to the press, the Customs Boss noted that China closed their borders for forty years, now they are great.

“China closed their borders for 40 years and today they’re great. Don’t you want Nigeria to be great?”, he queried.

China had closed their borders in the period they described as “The Great Leap Forward” under the leadership of Chairman Mao Tse Tong. Things became too bad that Chinese citizens were literally starving and cannibalism became the order of the day. People were donating members of their families in turn for the feeding of themselves and others. But Mao refused to budge, for fear of appearing weak to the world. It was only when the borders were opened that China had a breath of fresh air.

Meanwhile, the Presidency has said the closure will only last till next year-January 31st to be precise.

The Deputy Comptroller of Customs in charge of Enforcement, Investigation and Inspectorate, Victor Dimka, sent the Presidential directive to the Customs Sector Coordinators. It is not clear whether the Directive was sent from Buhari, who has just left Saudi Arabia to London on a two week private visit, or from Vice President Osinbajo, whom he did not officially hand over to.

The memo read in part:

“I am directed to inform you that it is observed that despite the overwhelming success of the operation, particularly the security and economic benefits to the nation, a few strategic objectives are you to be achieved.
