Nigeria’s deepening political divisions under President Bola Tinubu have brought renewed attention to calls for inclusive governance, with Seyi Makinde, presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), promising to establish a four-year transitional Government of National Unity if elected in 2027.

Makinde, who is also the Oyo State governor, pledged to serve only one four-year term, saying his administration would be broad-based and focused on addressing political exclusion and national challenges.

The pledge comes amid complaints by some Northern leaders that Tinubu’s administration favours the South-West in federal appointments and the distribution of government opportunities.

The presidency has rejected allegations of sectional bias, maintaining that its appointments comply with the federal character principle.

Speaking at an APM town hall meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, on October 10, Makinde said his proposed government would promote inclusiveness and ensure that no part of the country felt excluded.

“Our government will not last beyond four years. And it will be an all-inclusive government,” he said.

Makinde identified insecurity, poverty, economic hardship and inadequate electricity supply among Nigeria’s major challenges. He also called on the Federal Government to publish its petroleum pricing template to enable Nigerians to understand how petrol prices are determined.

The APM candidate said his proposed administration would bring together different political, ethnic and regional interests to address the country’s problems.
