Commercial drivers operating in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, have been directed to wear branded caps of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC or risk sanctions from the state government.
Blessing Ebhodaghe, chairman of the council gave the order to the drivers,saying his directive was in line with Governor Monday Ekpobholo’s plan to ensure that the state issecured forthe the APC and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 election.
The council boss stated that any commercial driver whofailedto comply with the directive risk being disciplined, as the party will not want anything that will jeopardise its plan to ensure that Presidemt Tinubu returned tooffice next year.
Recallthat Governor Okpebholo had earlier promised to secure 2.5 million votes forthe president during the 2027 presidential election. He had also ordered memebrs of the state Executive Council to ensure that they wear Tinubu’s branded cap.
The council chairman said he’s moving around all the parks in the state to ensure that the drivers complied with the directive, saying all the drivers must cooperate with the governor to deliver the promise of ensuring the Tinubu and Governor Okpegbolo are reelected, adding that it’s only the way to appreciate them forthe goodworksthey have been doing., vowing toremove any Motor Park chairman who failed to enforce the directive.
“The only thank you the governor has for the president is to deliver the 2.5 million votes. And the only payback me and you have for the governor is to make sure the promise he gave the president is fulfilled,’ ‘Ebhodaghe said.
He also warned, “In this Onitsha park, I am here to give a standing warning to all my drivers. On no account should I see any driver put on a face cap or any material that does not belong to the party (APC).
“If I see anybody put on another cap, Ehijiele, the chairman of this park, is my very good friend. But there will be no friendship in this business. If I see anybody, I will come here and remove him.
“If not because of the governor of Edo state, I know most of you drivers would have been inside today doing nothing because if the road is not good, drivers cannot work.
“If the road is not good, you cannot drive anything. You cannot even find your daily bread. But because the road is good today, you can go to Onitsha and come back.
“So, the person that did that one, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has somebody behind him, which is President Bola Tinubu.
“Take this warning to your people and share the caps. Let nobody come and tell me, ‘Sir, I was not having cap, that is why the APC gave me cap.’ So, please, let there be no excuse,” the council boss said.
The magazine reports that politicians have stepped up rhetorics, including threats to their opponents as the 2027 election gets closer, a development described by analysts to be dangerous for the the country.
